After watching this video and finding out exactly what she’s spouting about textured hair, I can confidently say that Lorraine Massey is like the Gwenyth Paltrow of the curly community 😂
The best thing to do is experiment with your hair, do your own research and go from there! It’s a process! Thank you for the information, very educational.
OMG, I Love this video! When you started comparing the clean eating with some methods of "haircare", I knew right away I see that all the time. I am in a curly hair group that swears if you claim to have ANY sort of issue with your hair, even frizz (which lets face it, everyone has from time to time) it is because you are not using very expensive water soluble products. If you do that then ALL your problems will be solved. My hair has only been curly for a couple of years so I changed my products and routines for hair health and mostly stayed away for silicones. I think I am now ready to add a few back in to see how my hair reacts. Anyone who thinks they can get away from chemicals in food or products should take a look at the chemical composition of a banana. They will be astounded. Everything is made of chemicals.
I think the disordered eating analogy is really apt. I’d love to see you focus on the whitewashing of curly hair care that CGM perpetuates at some point in this series, too. It’s something that I think more creators should be including in the conversation.
Thank you for briefly mentioning the issue with labeling right coils as “multicultural hair”! I would definitely like to hear more about this from you and to see you shout out any creators of color you recommend.
One of my biggest issues with the OG CGM is the order to leave your rinse-out conditioner in your hair. First of all, as you pointed out, that is the fast track to over moisturised hair. I did this for about 8 years, and my hair was... not in good shape when I stopped last spring. It took a lot of protein and hair cuts to get healthy hair back. (To make it worse, I actually have very fine hair that needs more protein than moisture.) The other problem is actually worse. Rinse out conditioner is formulated... to be rinsed out. The pH is lower than the pH of your hair. This is good, because it closes that cuticle layer that your shampoo lifted. But consistently messing with the pH of your scalp is Bad News. It can change your scalp biome, killing off the good bacteria and allowing bad ones to grow. Plus, constantly leaving your hair strands covered with an acidic substance can eventually eat away at your hair. I think this is what happened to me. My hair analysis assumed I had done major heat damage when I had never flat ironed my hair. Extra conditioner and letting my hair be soggy 24/7 is the only thing I can point to.
Ugh YES!!! Too low a pH can dry out your hair just as much as too high a pH can!! Every time a Deva-certified stylist left Conditioner in my hair like that, it made my curls both dry and greasy. Not good.
To me, I never had a problem with my hair per say leaving conditioner in…but it honestly did give me a whole lot of acne/bacne that hasn’t went away since. It’s only now getting better, for anyone reading this…even if you find that leaving your conditioner in does give you those good shiny results…it’s not worth it, just use a serum, or a leave in, or braid your hair before bed, all of these give the same result :’)
Good for you! After I read the book, I too thought that is was way too restricting, but since I was desperate for those curls, I followed the rules! Only CG approved products, which ended up over conditioning my fine wavy hair, making it limp and lifeless, and costing me a small fortune in products, that I will never use again. I've gotten much better results just experimenting on my own. Thanks for showing us "the other side of the story". It's very easy to get caught up in the hype when you want results! Love your channel!
I am only 1 month in and I have chosen to label my journey as a healthy hair routine. Especially when I tell people that notice my curls are looking good and they have no idea about curly girl anything. And my poor girls have such straight hair (totally gorgeous) but now also want curls so I try to focus on health to help them be more satisfied with their normal
This is hands down the best video on the CGM ever made! I really appreciate your comprehensive approach highlighting the long term consequences of this book. Thanks to this book I have identified that I am a Cherub, but that really is all. How to take care of my hair properly I still don’t know after 2 years, certainly anything in this dumpster fire of a book will not work for me, at all. It’s a shame that this method still has so many blind devotees. Your content is excellent Angela, thank you so much 🙌🏻🤗💕😘
Thanks for this awesome video! I never went completely into the CGM, but was absolutely avoiding sulfate, silicone and drying alcohol.... It's all changing now... Listening to my hair, that's what works! You're making me accepting silicones et al! That's awesome!!! 😁🥰
Oh man those book quotes remind me of my brief and ill-fated foray into the CGM about 15 years ago. I think I lasted about a week before my scalp was horribly broken out.
I started truly caring for my curls with Ouidad, which showed me how to style and cut. I decided to try the CGM and the Deva product line when this book came out. My hair started falling out, lost its curl and body. I was so depressed. When I spoke to a friend whose curls are similar to mine, just healthy, she told me she stayed with Ouidad products and ignored the CGM. My eyes were opened. Eight years later I'm reading about the problems with DevaCurl and I wasn't surprised. My hair is at its healthiest right now and I just ignore anyone who tries to gatekeep curls or the "proper" method of care.
Great video! As someone who struggled with heavy restriction in my teens as soon as I seen how obsessive one gets doing CGM I thought of it as a means of controlling an aspect of life that otherwise you can’t control (like was the case with my ED.) The footnotes on the books and no citations always drove me crazy too; even worse I feel is that these methods she writes in her book was used in black hair care for years & she just capitalized on it and didn’t even give proper credit to all the incredible woman of color who have helped us learn so much about caring for natural hair. Thank you so much for the content and calling out the alarming trend in CG of over restriction that seems eerily similar to the control people seek through an ED.
YES!! The promise of complete control is so alluring but it’s dangerous to any of us who have obsessive tendencies. And you are spot on about her appropriation of natural hair care techniques - I’m going to be including that in a future video in this series. Proud of you for making it out on the other side of your ED and thank you so much for watching and sharing your experience! 💛
Lorraine, come live with me in Florida where dew points are 75-80 degrees, you can drink the air, and hurricane Elsa is coming. Silicones are the only option!!
I don't live in that sort of climate but understand. I can only Imagine how my hair would react! I need silicones full stop.. I have tried without, CG method everything , Cost me a fortune! My hair was awful..very frizzy, hard just revolting.😱 And we had a water filter!!! I was disappointed. CG seemed to help others 🤔So I went back to my former ( and cheaper) products and diffuser. Much better .Angela is one of the best teachers and really helped me!
I love love love Atoya @ the curly hair studio for hair advice. She gives simple, easy to use techniques (marrying water and conditioner, drizzle rinse, flip coat scrunch) and doesn’t shame anybody for doing what works for them! I’ve found her advice waaayyyyyy more helpful than anything from the “CG cult”.
Thanks for your honesty. I have felt these things for quite awhile and glad to hear someone else finally bring it out. I drank the koolaid and was very disappointed with the results by following Massey’s CGM. So I started my own journey by using what works on my hair. Much happier and also have more money in my pocket. 😀
Thanks for this. Finding out that my daughters hair was low porosity was what encouraged her curls to naturally show themselves. It wasn’t the method that allowed her curls to form, it was us figuring out what her hair needed. She is only a toddler so I am not doing anything but keeping her hair healthy so that one day if she wants to she can explore her hair. Realizing that her low porosity hair wasn’t enjoying the added protein leaves I had in her tea rinse made the difference. She has eczema so we only use ingredients that are not aggravating and tea rinses agree with her skin. I use oats, Shea butter and coconut oil mix cream for after her bath and it was only after brushing her hair and me gently raking my hands through it that I realized that her hair enjoyed the oil combination - I had the mix on my hands after rubbing it in. She has no frizz and her curls are enjoying forming because her hair is taking to the combination we are using. Right now it looks like she is a type 3. It was the knowledge of porosity that enabled us to keep her hair happy not the method or order. Once a month addition of protein to her tea rinse works like a charm. With my hair…when all my products arrive I will sit down and slowly figure out what my hair wants. I’m new to all this but wherever I have searched the Devacurl topic has come up. I didn’t know that this woman was connected to Devacurl. I don’t think I know much at all about all this come to think of it. I bought into the idea of it. A month ago I didn’t know I had curly hair until I came across this and decided to try the squish to condish. Curls popped up and then I was on the train with everyone else. I think this video is the straw that broke the camels back. I think I will get off the train despite me only being on it for about a month. I think my products are a good starting point and will slowly figure out what my hair is telling me. Thank you for this video. You and my daughter’s hair changed my perspective.
I played around with some of the CGM techniques/rules, focusing more on UA-cam tutorials. I considered buying the book and trying, until I saw that LM came out and chastised anyone using a modified CGM, saying there was no such thing. You’re either 100% CGM or nothing. That attitude turned me off. But have you looked at pics of LM’s hair? Not trying to be disrespectful but her hair is frizzy, and has curls that look fried and undefined. And she’s supposed to be an expert? No thanks. The UA-camrs I follow have gorgeous, soft, bouncy, defined curls. That’s who I’m going to follow to get the results I want. And my hair has never looked better or been healthier! (Where was this hair when I was getting perms every 6 months? 😄) Thanks for your opinion, Angela. And your great videos. I’ll stick with that, thank you, and leave CGM to others.
I’m glad I’m not the only one who noticed her fair. Don’t get me wrong, I think it’s pretty and I prefer a little frizz. But it looks a little dry to me, which is ironic considering her advice.
@@sabr4174 that’s what I’m saying. We all get a little frizz, myself included. It’s not necessarily a bad thing. But her hair does not look healthy. Shouldn’t it? If you’re going to be an “expert” in curly hair, shouldn’t your own hair be an example? She may love it, and good for her, but it’s definitely not what I aspire to have. Mine looks healthier and I’m still transitioning.
I like watching manes by Mel, her hair is so pretty and heathy. She’s a professional hair stylist, so I trust her. However…LM has nice hair too, but I think for how much she’s telling you to do, and spend on things…shouldn’t it be better? Mel’s hair looks great and all she really does is shampoo, conditioner, and a leave in. LM strikes me as someone who takes advantage of people who are in a low point in life and have self esteem issues regarding their hair. She is just a marketing genius.
Yes, Lorraine Massey recently came out saying that if you're modifying her method at all, it's not the Curly Girl Method. Period. Wow. So this means the majority of people are NOT doing the CGM! And according to Lorraine Massey, you can't call it that or say that that's what your doing... talk about gatekeeping! Do you, and what works for YOUR hair. Edited to add that I love your comparison at the end. Thank you for that. It can be dangerous and very much a bullying arena. Please everyone: be safe, do your own research about what works for you and your hair, and don't let these restrictions hold you back.
What baffles me the most is how much she warns against disturbing the curl pattern including wearing a hair net to wash than says to style wavy hair just flip your hair over and willy nilly scrunch gel in. Hmm
I think you are so right. Such good reflection on deeper issues behind all the rules. I have wondered about the rules and why they matter SO much to some. Makes so much sense to me now. Thank you for your thoughts on the matter!
You are the voice of reason, lol! I take what resonates with me and discard the rest. I am NOT obsessed with my curls. I have learned something from many influencers, but basically it is just hair, and I like my hair...that is all that matters. Becoming a slave to the “ method” is just silly.
This book launched me on my wavy journey. But that's what it was for me...a starting point. Take what works, leave what doesn't and grow in grace and knowledge ☺. I never even thought about the eating disorder/ control parallel that some can struggle with in regards to the CG method. Thank you for sharing this video.
Yes, it can be such a great starting place, especially in regards to styling!! A balanced approach is key :) and honestly I wouldn’t have seen the ED parallel if I wasn’t a survivor myself.
This is hands down one of the best explanation reviews of the CGM book. Excellent comedy and straight truth and facts. Good grief at the data in this book, I remember when I first read it when I started my journey 3.5 years ago I was like WTH is this.. I became a product junkie in like 2.5 seconds and couldn't use half the crap! I do find it odd she wrote a book and did a whole line of products regarding the line and it flopped well it has recently.. now they people figured out how ridiculous it was. So glad I never jumped on that DC bandwagon. Anyhow excellent video girl!
CGM is a great example of how fascinating human psychology is , even a hair care method can become almost cult like and dogmatic. Thanks for being a rational critical thinker!
Yeah initially it was good for me but eventually it led to limp over conditioned curls and I think it caused some hair thinning. Thankfully I’ve learned and haven’t been CG for years.
Love this video Haha. Got knows I practically had a mental breakdown since my teens trying to find the miracle brand and product routine to make my insanely frizzy by nature wavy curl hair cooperate and look presentable so I didnt look like a hobo wearing my hair down and not have to be forced to use a curling wand over top layers to look more uniform or just throw up my hair in a top knot to avoid it all together. Drove me mad because I could never find the simple balance of definition for my waves, moisture without weighing down my fine hair, and cutting the frizz without leaving my hair looking like straw from overly stick strong hold stylers. All these hyped methods and horrible devacurl products just wasted years of my time and money as my hair was still frizzy, undefined, and weighed down from all the excess moisture that every "expert" swore all curly hair needed to form to its maximum potential. Sounds great in theory but cleansing conditioners and all only weighed down my hair insanely and build up on my scalp over time. Like skin, hair is just so individual with its chemistry and as much as we wish it was an easy pick up whatever product and have it work it sadly is not. Ive gained some sanity over the years letting go of these over preached methods and wasting hundreds on a bs devacut once because I dont have the patience or need 50 spend hours on 50 steps of plopping and God knows what else every hair wash lol among the apply and squish all into soaking wet hair method only left me with completely funky stuck to scalp roots even with using microfiber towels to soak up the extra water. Miracle for some but so me just broke up the perfect forms curls and causes endless frizz among all the wasted product used in excess when applying to such wet hair. Definitely crazy how something that works so well for some is horrid for others. Se la vie in the trials of curl hair! 😅
well then. thank you for saving my time and energy! i just stated seeing this curly girl stuff on yt. i'm not even going to bother looking the way of the book. i mean curly hair isn't think or dense!? really!? did that woman even have to grow up with the curls!? this is my 3rd video of yours, subscribing because i like they way you look at what works and dispells what doesn't. in lieu of beautiful curls everywhere, you're saving a lot of frustration. ty! :D
Absolutely loves this. Thank you! Im 2 months in and feeling like im in moisture overload so been using protein the last few washes and my hair is bouncy back
@@TheFitCurlsi have a question. so you know your talk on quinoa, is the ecoslay quinoa treatment ok? I know you gave it positive reviews and i wondered if you still felt this way? Im wanting to try it but dont want to end up with abbrasions on my scalp
@@melanieb4270 that is a great question! The good news is that the quinoa in the Matcha Boost is the hydrolyzed protein version, not the unprocessed seed - it’s totally non-abrasive 👍🏻
@@TheFitCurls oh thats such good news. I know theyre changing to reuseable packaging and glass bottles so want to buy before my local stockist runs out. Im not keen to have glass in the shower
Very good video!!! I was in a Facebook group of the CGM and they were "Talibans." Anything you said worked for you outside of the method, you were crucified. Their only obsession was buying more and more products. I have fine and frizzy hair and after 1 year without seeing any changes, I realized that the spectacular changes only occurred in girls who had very, very damaged hair. I started with healthy hair, which I cut very often, I already used sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner, I don't use an iron and I used the dryer at medium power. Strict CGM made my hair worse. Girls throw away the CGM book and follow Angela advices
One has to take into consideration the year both books were published. It's really out of date. This book did make it finally okay to embrace one's curls. However, the science and resulting products about how to treat and enhance curls wasn't as developed as it/they are now. She was a founder, and all founder advice is nearly always improved by those who follow.
Oh I'm SO glad I found your channel! I am about to start CGM and now may just do my own take based off of one of your other videos (as we have very similar curl patterns). THANK YOU for breaking this down and for the other tips. They've been super insightful! :)
This is a great video to remind us to think logically about the what and why's in caring for our hair and scalp. Excited to see your next videos in this series! I love your hair and your enthusiasm!
Wow, I love your advice about avoiding such restrictive practices, especially if you have a obsessive traits. I was literally just searching for Lorraine‘s way after coming across some modified curly girl method videos and I’m sure I would have been tempted to take the deep dive had I not listened to your video. I look forward to trying some of the washing, conditioning, and styling methods, but after hearing all the restrictions I didn’t know I was about the embark upon, I’m so relieved. Thank you!
I have that book and have read it cover to cover so many times. Honestly I am yet to find anything in there that works for my hair. We all have different hair, different goals & different needs it's all trial & error. At least that's been my experience anyway.
You were not joking last week when you said you were going to deep dive. I’m so excited about this series. Independent and critical thinking is so important in all parts of life and there are a lot of people who are deep into the cult of CGM. Also - the idea that Lorraine Massey has made so many rules and essentially said you can’t be CG ‘compliant’ unless you buy the products she makes is such elitist BS. They are not cheep and I know so many people who get amazing results with products that are far better value. I have always found technique is more important than the products and she puts so much information on What instead of How
The natural products is interesting to me. I tried switching to all natural colors approved shampoo and conditioners but my hair hated it. I tried for many months too. But my hair got flat, dull and greasy. And I don’t have oily hair! My hair gets the best curls after swimming in a Chlorine pool! Lol. Obviously I don’t wash in chlorine but I’ve found that MY hair like the “Big Sexy Hair” line the best. Can someone tell me why my hair likes non CGM products and hates CGM products!?
Just subscribed, this was a great video! I love all my shampoos and brushes so I could never strictly follow the cgm. I also love silicones since they’re great for humidity
For the get go, I knew that the CGM was not for me. I know my hair and all of that would have weighed it down. My hair is so greasy and gets so sweaty from living in South Florida. I would have definitely had more hair loss. I feel that no matter what your hair type is, we can always learn how to take care of it. I’ve learned so much about healthy hair that I’ve been able to help my sister who has straight hair have the protein/moisture balance because her hair is dyed extremely light.
That is awesome!!! And yeah, greasy hair in a humid climate is basically my version of hell 😖 It really is all about finding what works for each of us!
I just started trying to bring out the best in my wavy hair. I didn’t even realize there was anything I could do. There are so many products out there! I know some trial and error is involved but any advice on limiting purchases of products would be greatly appreciated!
Completely agree with your diet comparison 👏👍 As a side note it'll be awesome if you created a fitness channel! With your awareness of eating disorders I can trust you not to recommend strict low calorie intake, keto only or fasting rotations. And you always explain yourself so well I can see you explaining proper techniques...I can't tell you how many videos I watched to figure out how to properly squat. It's hard to find fitness info without the irritating 10 minute routines or crazy eating suggestions. Basic info on how to properly perform different exercises and why they help is HARD to find. Regardless I truly appreciate your hard work with The Fit curls! Your suggestions have helped me figure out what my hair likes 😀
Ughhhhhhh the fitness influencer world makes me so angry. You’re absolutely right that I would never recommend crazy calorie deficits or elimination diets - it’s just a fast track to an ED!! I would love to make a fitness channel but I need to figure out how to streamline what I already do before I start something new 😆
When starting my curly journey (ugh hate that phrase) at the beginning of lockdown I bought the CGM book, more out of interest than anything. I was 40 at the time, and I know my hair very well. It is awkward beyond explanation, I’ve got about 23 growth patterns, a double crown..the list goes on. Most importantly my hair and scalp in particular does NOT cope well with over-moisturising. My hair is pretty fine, but I have a lot of it so over conditioning results in Lego hair (or gravy hair as my pal put it). I cannot imagine not rinsing out conditioner well- I’ve inadvertently done this before and my scalp in particular goes bonkers. But I have let my hair (which is a curly pixie) dry naturally, and with all the conditioning and plastering gel over the top took over 6 hours. It still looked crap after I scrunched. I agree with LM in treating your hair carefully and taking it back to basics, but I felt she didn’t refer very much to scalp issues (esp from residue build up).
Well, all I can say is. My mom was a beautician all my life, all she would say about caring for my hair was shampoo shampoo and condition, then cut cut cut. My hair always always tangles so terribly bad. I'm talking huge rats nests at the nap of my neck to where you have to cut them out. Brushing results in lots of crying and screaming as I brush, not to count the amount of hair that is pulled out. Then an hour later repeat as it tangles all over again. I'm seriously over the tangles and knots. I have loosely used these techniques and so far no more tangles. It was so bad before I found this book I was going to start shaving my hair and wearing wigs.
I stopped straightening my hair a few months ago but regardless of having my curly combo wavy hair or if I straighten it I cannot use any type of conditioner period -- or I am a dust ball under the couch --- I have a finer type of hair but a lot of hair --- you have to experiment with products ---- my refresh day is just misting water or a steamer and done..PS I can not use anything that is creamy looking -- all things I have to use is clear to look at -- I use Natures promise castile peppermint liquid soap for my shampoo...
i have a problem :( I’ve been on my curly journey for 2 years already and I have tried so many products and never work well with me. I have tried weightless products too and my hair always gets weight down no matter what. I’m about to give up on this journey because my curly hair never looks good
Have you tried defusing after you shower? Also sleeping on satin or silk is nice but…if your hair is easily flat…you should probably go for sateen. Sleeping with your hair in a high cinnamon bun at night also helps with Volume, and don’t be afraid of a wide tooth comb and some water with product to refresh if you feel like you need it.
I believe the CGM magic comes from one simple thing, at least here in Czech Republic. It was first time someone said it is ok to be curly, let’s make the best of it instead of here are products to make your hair straight. Later on we all understood the backdrafts and kept the best of it, which is technique and not the crazy products. And also many people with just ‘not nice looking hair’ realized yes, in fact I am curly. That is why girls follow the basic idea, but found their ways in selecting suitable products
What bugs me is how mean the followers get to someone who says it’s not for them. Or dares to veer from it. And if ur hair isn’t coily, God forbid u call it curly. You’ll be screamed at “ITS WAVY! Ur hair is NOT CURLY!” If ur hair has natural curl that’s more than a few pieces, it’s curly. Maybe not tight curly, but curly. That bugs me so bad. Like wavy hair is lesser than coils. No. It’s just different curls. But still curls. And also, I’ve noticed that a lot of the die hard followers in groups don’t have what I wld consider curly hair. It’s mostly straight and they may get a few S patterns at the bottom after saturating it w water and conditioner and gel. But it’s not doing that on its own. My rule of thumb, if u give me advice for my curly hair and ur hair is mostly straight w 5 pieces that turn at the bottom, I’m not listening to u even if u follow CGM to a T. Also, if ur hair looks terrible because it’s only washed in a moisturizer and not a cleanser, I’m Not listening. I just don’t get to judgyness and wave shaming as not curly. It’s crazy.
At the end of your video I hear "Dogs can't have essential oils, they'll die." You say "most people shouldn't have them either" and I was curious why you say that... I can't be around them, I get a bad headache.
Lavender and Tea Tree essential oils are the only two essential oils that are safe to apply neat (directly to the skin). The others must be diluted and used sparingly on the skin. Essential oils are derived from the plant, while fragrance oils are synthetic.
So first, just like dogs, people definitely should not ingest essential oils! But also, they can be major skin irritants, especially if improperly diluted. So I just always advise caution :)
I have always thought that the issue w the Devacurl products is not the products, it’s when people use them according to strict CGM. Anytime people solely ‘wash’ with conditioner and then use tons of leave in conditioner, the results eventually are the same: scalp irritation, fungal infections on the scalp, build-up, and eventually hair loss. Does anyone here remember the once-popular Wen products? This was a line of what were essentially cowashes and conditioners. The exact same issues arose- scalp build up and eventual hair loss. And don’t get me started on what her strict method would do to kinky/coily hair. Finger detangling only?!?
Question-is conditioner even cleansing ur hair? This was always my big hold back w the cgm. I liken it to washing ur body w lotion. Isn’t conditioner a moisturizer for ur hair? Not a cleanser? I saw alllllllll these people on the cgm fb groups and their hair always looked greasy and weighed down and wet. It grossed me out to think of washing w conditioner only. Because to me, it’s not a cleanser. It’s a moisturizer. Am I wrong? That’s the biggest cgm thing that’s always bugged me.
@@aross1576 I know, I look at some of those pictures and I’m like, ok, yay, your hair is curly, but it looks like a grease trap. Most conditioners have very mild surfactants in them that can have a mild cleansing effect, but at the same time is what allows the softening/slippery part of the conditioner to deposit itself on your hair. Here’s an article that talks about how surfactants work, and why cleansing with conditioner doesn’t really cleanse your hair. curlyhairlounge.com/the-truth-about-surfactants-for-curly-hair-products
I’ve always thought of Massey as a fear mongering snake oil salesperson. Saying “all this stuff is bad but MY STUFF is the right stuff” is soo dangerous. And I think she preys on a group of people battling the “curly hair isn’t professional” who have been trying for years to make their hair look like the stereotypical European beauty ideal.
@@SioLazer It's not meant to be a trap at all. I've read the book and didn't think that it was racist, so I'm just wondering why you think it might be racist.
Your slander of her on a public forum to me is unprofessional and in bad taste and is a total turnoff to me. I wonder how you would feel if she slandered you by name on her forum? I have no respect for people who do this sort of thing. If she did this towards you, I would say the same to her. I started the CGM 20 or more years ago and it was very successful for my hair. My hair following her method was traffic stopping. I literally had people come to my car window or in stores and ask me about my hair. As far as I'm concerned, she did a lot right. There was not a lot of options back then at all and I was clueless about my hair. We are all entitled to make our own hair choices, including Lorraine, but naming names on a worldwide public forum is very low.
She published the book. She even published a revised edition, as mentioned here, so she had every opportunity to cite sources and change the misinformation she published. Every point I made was well-researched and my sources are cited in the description. I reviewed her book and even gave a ton of credit to Massey at the top of the video for the good things she recommends in the book. You’re absolutely entitled to your feelings about the CGM and what I said here, but none of it was slander.
I agree with you Anna. Lorraine Massey's book changed my hair for the better. I learned to love my hair again. All these curly girl gurus have based a lot of their techniques on what Lorraine started many years ago. Give the woman some credit. Most hairdressers had NO idea how to style curly girl hair years ago. Their answer was to blow dry and flat iron it. Her DevaCurl products were phenomenal when they first came out. Life changing until the company was bought out. I've been endlessly complemented on my hair since doing the CGM and I have been doing it for over a decade. Lorraine Massey is the rock star of the curly girl movement, imo.
@@curlgirl4265 And many agree with you! Heck, I love the Curl positivity she encourages, and as I mention in this video, I really appreciate several tips that she offers in the book! But in my own reading and subsequent research I found a lot of inconsistencies and pseudoscience - THAT is what I cannot recommend.
After watching this video and finding out exactly what she’s spouting about textured hair, I can confidently say that Lorraine Massey is like the Gwenyth Paltrow of the curly community 😂
Best. Comparison. EVER.

I no longer even say curly girl, I now say curly care.
Yup!! Everything is chemicals and there’s no one-size-fits-all solution!
I think the disordered eating analogy is really apt. I’d love to see you focus on the whitewashing of curly hair care that CGM perpetuates at some point in this series, too. It’s something that I think more creators should be including in the conversation.
I’ve talked about it a bit on TikTok and definitely plan on including that in a future video in this series! It’s so so important to mention.
I’m going to have to follow you on tiktok 😉
Thank you for briefly mentioning the issue with labeling right coils as “multicultural hair”! I would definitely like to hear more about this from you and to see you shout out any creators of color you recommend.
One of my biggest issues with the OG CGM is the order to leave your rinse-out conditioner in your hair. First of all, as you pointed out, that is the fast track to over moisturised hair. I did this for about 8 years, and my hair was... not in good shape when I stopped last spring. It took a lot of protein and hair cuts to get healthy hair back. (To make it worse, I actually have very fine hair that needs more protein than moisture.)
The other problem is actually worse.
YES!!! It is all about health!! I love that you’re spreading that message to your girls and I’m sure their hair is GORGEOUS!
Your content is excellent Angela, thank you so much 🙌🏻🤗💕😘
Thank you so much!!!! I just want people to know they have less restrictive options 🥰
Thanks for this awesome video! I never went completely into the CGM, but was absolutely avoiding sulfate, silicone and drying alcohol.... It's all changing now... Listening to my hair, that's what works! You're making me accepting silicones et al! That's awesome!!! 😁🥰
YAY YAY YAY!!! That is what it’s all about!!!! 💕💕💕
Oh man those book quotes remind me of my brief and ill-fated foray into the CGM about 15 years ago. I think I lasted about a week before my scalp was horribly broken out.
Ooooof that sounds miserable!!
Agreed. Sometimes even with some water soluble silicones I can get frizzy hair. LOL
@@dennissems oh I know all about that too! Also products work only a few times sometimes, annoying
@@SSmith-dn9ib so true. I use anything that says light weight. That helps so much.
@@dennissems good tip thanks!
Atoya is AWESOME!!
Thanks for your honesty. I have felt these things for quite awhile and glad to hear someone else finally bring it out. I drank the koolaid and was very disappointed with the results by following Massey’s CGM. So I started my own journey by using what works on my hair. Much happier and also have more money in my pocket. 😀
Those “approved” products really do get expensive fast!! Glad you’re finding what works for YOU!
Totally agree on LM’s hair, it’s a fried mess.
@@RebekkaHay thank you. I was expecting to get flamed for saying so. Lol.
I have a relative with orthorexia, and you’re 100% spot on about the comparison.
I survived it myself, and once I drew the connection it chilled me to the bone.
Hmm
There’s definitely some interesting double-speak in the book 😅
I think you are so right. Such good reflection on deeper issues behind all the rules. I have wondered about the rules and why they matter SO much to some. Makes so much sense to me now. Thank you for your thoughts on the matter!
You are such an amazing woman and I just love your content whether it's dialogue or technique or reviews. Thanks for keeping it real! ❤
Oh my gosh you are too kind!!! Thank you so much for watching xxx
You are the voice of reason, lol! I take what resonates with me and discard the rest. I am NOT obsessed with my curls. I have learned something from many influencers, but basically it is just hair, and I like my hair...that is all that matters. Becoming a slave to the “ method” is just silly.
Absolutely!!! Take everything with a grain of salt and listen to your hair without letting it dominate your life!
Thank you for spreading the sound of reason and common sense. We all could benefit from more of it.
I have the book, but never read it. Thanks for saving me the time and energy involved in reading it.
well then. thank you for saving my time and energy! i just stated seeing this curly girl stuff on yt. i'm not even going to bother looking the way of the book. i mean curly hair isn't think or dense!? really!? did that woman even have to grow up with the curls!? this is my 3rd video of yours, subscribing because i like they way you look at what works and dispells what doesn't. in lieu of beautiful curls everywhere, you're saving a lot of frustration. ty! :D

Yes!! This is why I started my own curly girl group on facebook - no judgement - lots of love and encouragement. Shouldn't they all be like this??
I loved this video 🤩 Finally... someone who knows what they're doing! Love ya Angela! 😍❤️
I like the science. Thank you for this new series.
I tried the cgm for 4 weeks. After that i had scalp issues and hair loss. Now i am doing my own thing and call it curly hair methode
YES!!! In my opinion every curly-haired human should have their own curly hair method!
Love your video! Super helpful since I was considering buying this book.
@@TheFitCurls exactly 😘😘
I just started trying to bring out the best in my wavy hair. I didn’t even realize there was anything I could do.
There are so many products out there!
I know some trial and error is involved but any advice on limiting purchases of products would be greatly appreciated!
Completely agree with your diet comparison 👏👍
As a side note it'll be awesome if you created a fitness channel!
I would love to make a fitness channel but I need to figure out how to streamline what I already do before I start something new 😆
Amazing video! ❤️❤️
Great video! I totally agree with you. Thank you 😊💕
What bugs me is how mean the followers get to someone who says it’s not for them. Also, if ur hair looks terrible because it’s only washed in a moisturizer and not a cleanser, I’m
Not listening. I just don’t get to judgyness and wave shaming as not curly. It’s crazy.
Yeah the bullying is so uncalled for and incredibly damaging. Drives me INSANE. There’s no point in gatekeeping hair texture or hair care!!
This was such a good video!
Thank you!!
Thank you so much for this review! Now I don't have to waste my money on this book LOL
Fantastic video! Well done! 👏🏻💙🙏🏻🕊🌞

Amazing how dogma has crept into hair care.
That's probably what happens when people abandon religion. All they have left are more hedonistic and vain pursuits 🤷♀️.

EXACTLY!
Amen to that. I do not appreciate spreading fear instead of science.
You should look into fast hair growth shampoo to double hair growth.
I haven't read the book. I'm getting the impression from some of the sections you quote that it might be racist. Am I totally off?
No, you’re not off at all. But that is a subject for another video!
@@TheFitCurls fascinating, can't wait!
Racist? How?
@@juliemurray4797 This feels like a trap. Please rephrase your question.
@@SioLazer It's not meant to be a trap at all. I've read the book and didn't think that it was racist, so I'm just wondering why you think it might be racist.
Bravo 👏👏👏👏👏
Woah! I am sure you don’t intend to look like you are on the verge of a frenzy.
Calm down it’s just hair care 😆
Not close to slander
Don’t feed the trolls lol
