I'm so happy it's a "Old record was beaten" video and not a "Yet another person got caught cheating" video.
I find both of them fascinating due to the technical explanation, but I agree with you since one always ends in a sour note while the other just puts a smile in my face
Every "old record was beaten" video has the potential to become a "that person actually cheated" video someday down the line, though we always hope it won't.

Happy Birthday!

Happy Birthday! I'll be joining you in the dreaded 40somethings in a couple months. Dust crumbling high fives
Achievements like these are why I rarely say that something is "impossible".
Three seconds? Well, "we have no TAS at the moment", "we wouldn't know how to do it right now", "not to our knowledge", but new strats and glitches have been found in other games, even after decades, before.
The fighting spirit with which runners go at these challenges is truly inspiring, and Karl, your videos about them are an absolute blast to watch. You've really perfected the way you report about them and seeing your video about a game I play myself as well on my feed instantly makes my day. Thank you!
I don't get how people still say certain runs are impossible, especially on newer games that clearly haven't been completely dissected yet
"This task can really drive you mad! And 5 seconds [for the speedrun] isn't possible, if you do it I'll eat a horse", Demonlord 1995 (at 4:43 ) ...
You are absolutely right, Heiko. There are people who regularly eat horses. What seems impossible for one is just daily basis for the other.
Hehehehehe, have a good one!
Nonetheless the achievements of these nerds are impressive and I could not do it even in triple time:)
@@Ultimaximus Well, at their core, these statements are simply emotion-based claims (or if someone doesn't want to be too harsh: "educated guesses"), ideas, forecasts and predictions. And the only thing that we know (and what predictions funnily can't provide) is the certainty that predictions are just guesses or partly a guess and therefore based on chance ... which makes them definitively unreliable and less important for anything.
But who cares? That is absolutely basic human behavior. Everyone does it and this is nothing bad or good or something new, because every sane adult knows about it and should be able to handle such (superfluous?) calendar-sayings and remarks.
This applies to all aspects of life and even science, where we predict something or postulate a model that may describe processes in nature (EMPIRICAL science!), which we then have to check with experiments and/or by observation.
I hope now (after I generalized and complicated things, hehehe) you can "get how/why people make claims", hehe.
P.S.: Oh and the guys who just tell nonsense because they do like everything BUT learning, research, the processes about science I mentioned above ... and don't care about of being honest to their fellow humans (like liars, scammers, busybodies, flat-earthers and governors of Florida) ... I don't have an answer or any clue why they are doing this or why they choose to be that way.
Have a good game, Ultimaximus!:)
Yea but unless they are using a pc from the 90's it should not count, yea a emulator can be set to that but its still not REALLY the same. Doing these records on much newer faster better equipment should not count
@@dixiedad If the hardware changes anything, it's primarily going to result in making the game harder, not easier.

22:25 over 100,000 attempts??? That's absolutely *mental* dedication.
166 hours of attempts if you ignore load times
Considering the run is ~5 seconds, thats like 6 days of gameplay, lol.
100,000 on a fruitless achievment, what a waste
@@42smash36 That's how I would feel and thus why I'm not going to even try (I hate grinding in general, so speed running is obviously not for me), but I won't say it was a waste of time for him. People have different preferences and want to do different things with their lives, like the guy who wants to cross an ocean in a gigantic hamsterball.
@@42smash36 Rationally speaking, _everything_ is fruitless. We make our own meaning.
A thing or accomplishment is important to us, or to a community, because we decide that it is.
Something Id also like to add to even further convince you how much of a beast 4shock is, (If that even needed doing) is the fact he also beat every single other category for the level too, UVMax, Nightmare Speed, Tyson, all of them. While 4.97 is by far the most impressive run, Its rare for a player to be able to compete at the absolute highest level in every category, and it truly is incredibly impressive.
Nice profile pic! I love seeing that other people have played Oneshot, it’s such a hidden gem.
Usualy when I hear that it turns out they were cheating in some way
@@paixeon8816 Its fair to be skeptical, but 4Shock got this run on stream, and also has the thousands upon thousands of demo attempts from DSDA to prove it, so I wouldn't be too worried :)
@@paixeon8816 cheating without getting caught in classic doom is definitely not happening
The only way you could even cheat a demo file that doesnt outright give away cheating is a TAS, and well, pretty hard to TAS on stream the way 4shock plays on stream
@@paixeon8816I thought the same thing but in this case I will believe in the truth of the matter simply because cheating in Doom is barely possible. And basically impossible without being caught
Thanks to all Doom runners for ramping up the pressure for decades, to all fans for media interest, without either this wouldn't have been such a blast. And to Karl for amazing coverage.

Hearing that it took 100,000+ attempts really put into perspective how insane this is. I'm honestly not sure if I can say I've done anything 100,000 times - except breath.
I you would do a single run every single day. It would still take 274 years to have 100000 attempts.
You can cut down that number a lot because 4shock used a technique called "double restart" to get his quickstarts, so every other attempt is a blank 0-length demo. And after that something like 90% of the real attempts also reset within the first second because he had the wrong quickstart angle.
It's still an absurd amount of effort, almost a year of grinding lol, but not every run is the full 4/5 seconds long
That's the exact same thought I had. I couldn't imagine doing anything a 100,000 times.
@@rubendriezen7177 well when you can do 600 attempts in one hour it doesnt seem as bad
@@WayStedYou well, 600 dollars versus 100,000 dollars. Big difference
Pilger with the "Yes, it's possible ..." Ice cold.
We can affectionately call the quickstart the legit version of shifting into second gear.
My favorite part about Doom speedruns is the fact that almost all the old runs are still available, thanks to them being in demo files and the old web sites being around for so long. I still remember the early days of Compet-N. And to see it still going strong is amazing.
And by "see it still going strong" I mean the community. They've mostly moved to DSDA, but even Compet-N is still up - kinda. New host and it's mostly read only mode, but the fact that it still exists after all this time is a feat.
The fact that DOOM is over 30 years old and speedrunners are still finding new achievements to set in the game is insane
You should take a look at the community made content for the game. Still new mapsets coming out all the time. It's great!
Amen. I'm 57 n this ages me lol. But wow, this is so freaking awesome!!!
@@Kepeskyou are so correct!! I love how this is still relevant after all these years!!!
