Hi Andrew- I personally use is RUPERT NEVE "Shelford Channel" ( using HPF, >EQ > Comp ) w/ Blend @ times plus TEXTURE >UA apollo X6...then Pro Q3,>1176 if needed & LA-2A ( Plug-In) DeEsser,> Studder A800 /Oxide Tape/SATURN & of course 2 AUX for Verbs & 1-2 for Dly it needed. Thx you for taking the time to making your Videos. :) George
i just want to say as someone who has pretty much watched all o the epic tours etc etc this was the next best thing really looking forward to hearing about more recording/ mixing chains from the people you interview
HAHA YES !!! The Sennheiser mke-400 makes my life easier because I lend it to schools for audiovisual service. The microphone turns on by itself when the camera is turned on. It's a stupid proof or at least it's one less thing to think about and stay focused on the content. Perfect for an audiovisual loan counter. We have a lot of them here.
I don't have a go-chain. It really depends on the mood of the song. But here are the 2-3 options I usually go to. Mics: SM7B, WA87, Sontronics Orpheus. Pres: UA 610MKII, Great River, RND 511. No effects printed in daw, unless i'm using the 610. I will gently compress, but nothing heavy. Everything else is done in the box.
I got a UA Apollo Twin QUAD to make it easier to monitor vocals when recording and it's easily the best move i've ever made. I usually go Advanced Audio cm87 > UA 610 > UA 1176 when recording, but I only monitor - not printing those. Then in the DAW my vocal chain is typically Melodyne> Waves API 550B> Waves 1176> UA LA2A> ProQ3 >Valhalla Delay/Room
I know this is a huge ask - but it would be so amazing if you could do an elongated version/video of your first question. I'd love to learn more about settings of compressors etc for tracking into pro tools vs settings in the box.
Best thing ive ever heard in my life was a Sonyc800g (2010 model)> 1073 > CL1B. I was the mix engineer who recieved the stem and it was so incredible to mix I had to ask the studio engineer what he used. Absolutely crazy good.
I'm also a huge fan from the Czech Republic. Andrew should come over to Europe to do some studio tours. 😅 I've started working on mine but I'm still just a beginner...
I typically use a Neuman TLM 103 into a Neve 1073LB to a Neve 551 for some slight EQ, and finally into a Neve 535 for just a little compression. I feel like this gives me a great starting point with awesome coloration before going into my DAW.
Great video .... always cool to see what the pro's are using. Me ...... Warm Audio 1073 (no EQ model) - Audio-Scape 76F - Audio-Scape EQP-A (affordable chain and sounds fantastic) Can get that chain cheaper than a new CL1B! New mic of choice that doesn't break the bank for vocals I am using is the Universal Audio Bock 187. It's not cheap but it's very versatile.
Jeez man u on fire with the videos 🤤 Thanks so much for all the work u put in Always a treat to see a new video! Always something to learn.. Thanks so much man 🙏🏽❤️
i had some hella weak guitars for a pop punk song I was mixing and i SMASHED them with maxim and they sounded so huge. Of course louder, but more distorted in a super nice way and just night and day.
I'm not in a treated room so a condenser doesn't make the most sense for me. I used to have an SM7b years ago and plan to soon purchase a Dynacaster from sE Electronics. That will run through a tube Electro Harmonix 12ay7 mic pre and into an Apogee Rosetta AD converter. As far as plugins go, I subscribe to Plugin Alliance and like numerous of their offerings including the Lindell Channel X. The SSL channel strips are great, too, and so forth. I want to achieve a bit of analog compression and saturation from the pre before hitting the DAW so that's why I just bought a 12ax7 tube (to experiment with lowering the headroom and achieving more grit). Anyhow, a great mic is important for sure but so is an analog pre (rather than a cheap interface) and quality AD conversion. most overlooked? Toneworks ReelBus 4 yeee
I want to know what reverb plugin people are using on drums? I can never decide what I like more. I'm always toggling between Abbey Road chamber, sunset sound chamber and H-verb.
Can you please tell us when you are recommending a piece of gear and you got it for free or are getting paid to promote it? Need that perspective to make a purchasing decision. Example: the camera mic at the end. Just simply place a label on the screen saying if it’s a “paid sponsorship”. Thanks
For sure, I do in every video that's sponsored. If that's unclear, here's what to look for: in this video it's the first thing on the screen before the video starts "sponsored by sweetwater" also in the top corner of the video is a message that youtube puts on that says "paid sponsor", and again in the ad spot at the end I say "thanks to sweetwater for sponsoring this video, hey check out this product." With that being said, no one suggests which products I show, nor what I say or how long I talk about it. I have ultimate creative control and the final say. Only I get to decide the products I recommend, sponsored or not. Sweetwater is the main sponsor I choose to work with because they let me promote products I actually use everyday and in a lot of cases they will provide the product for my to try first. I will never show or recommend something I don't personally use in my own studio work. The sponsors are a necessary part of running this business and allow me to create content I believe is valuable and fun to watch so I appreciate you and every person who clicks the affiliate links, drum sample packs etc. You guys are the best.
You might want to look at the TLM107 which is more flexible and not too much more money. I'll be able to compare the two next week since I'll have both. I'm finding that I have to be about 15 inches back and turn the mic slightly left so it wont't distort the mic when recording vocals. I rap loud, but not rock and roll screaming or anything so I was surprised. The TLM107 has a pad so should keep the mic from distorting without having to turn the mic or back up more.
I have a U87 going into a 1073 and then CL1B. Does this make me a pro????? haha no. But its encouraging to know that we have shared ideas about what good quality looks like :) Pro tools, I found too glitchy so I am on Reaper. If its good enough for Dan Worrall it'll do for me. Unless y'all have thoughts???
Andrew! I have a question about your studio setup! How do you run your session from your drums in your studio? I want to have the same setup you do where I have a setup at the drums that control the Main setup
One very guilty Maxim user here.... Also using a very similar vocal chain (good to be validated). 87 - BAE1073 - 1176 - LA2A. Awesome interview and insight @Andrew Masters
I really don't like that they put Autotune on the vocal by default. 😕 The idea that "it's the sound everyone wants" or whatever is a self-fulfilling prophecy, and audiences much prefer a more natural vocal sound.
U87, ELAM251 or U47 tube --> AMS Neve 1073 pre--> Tubetech CL1B ---> DAW

Wake up baby, new Andrew Masters just dropped

U87 -> Great River -> Apollo (will get the CL1B as well eventually) great classic tone

Hi Andrew, great video. At 7:38 you’re saying „everybody uses the same stuff“. Would be cool to have a video about these standards :)

I actually really like this video, I was already going to buy the 500 series rack with the never pre and this was a confirmation 🙌🏾
i love the channel! Insanely inspiring for a budding musician/sound engineer like me. A fan from Slovakia. Thanks!

I think the most overlooked plugin is "Air Distortion". Put it in soft and stereo.. awesome!
As always... you're videos are amazing. Keep killin' it bro!!!
Appreciate it!

Every DAW should be doing folders and busses like Reaper. It's so clean and simple.
The guy in the black shirt is definitely who I would be if I worked at that studio
“We have one of those??”
These guys are awesome. They should have their own show.
Yooooo I do the same thing. My faders are at 0db and I use L1 to set levels on most tracks 😂
I use the same camera mic and yeah, it's great.
I use Mr. Microphone by Ronco!
But it's got to be the vintage orange one from 1980. It's got the best characteristics!
Acustica Audio Magenta is BOMBER on vocals🤘 BOMBER.
Could You please now show us in Protools, Personaly How to impliment the templates and settings these two guys talked about.

For me, a BeesNeez Oliver into an SSL Six CH with slight compression.

no dislikes, love to see it
He keeps his faders at 0? wait what? lol that would drive me insane.
I would have liked to hear what hardware/plugins the guys are using to provide the artist their monitor mix while tracking.
Great chains/starting points. Of course, it has to be tailored to the vocalist, as the fanciest chain in the world is not guaranteed to suit everyone.
Whoa! I know those guys!
Great info ! Thanks so much!😇
9:21 I know that room. You were in the same room where one of the producers worked on a song by Galantis.
OTT is one of my favorite plugins. It is free and you can get some wild sounds with it. Great to use in a parallel chain.
I don’t know about you but someone told me that using compression and eq makes things sound cool so that’s what I do 🤷🏽♂️
tlm103 - neve 1073lb - capit bt50 - serpent splice - serpent chimera

Crane Song is divine!

Sunset 🤘
TLM 49/ U87 -> 1073 DPX -> Distressor -> Apollo (I'm planning to buy either 1176, LA2A or CL1B but not for now...)
Awesome video! There's one thing I didn't quite understand, what did y'all mean by playlisting on the record or playback track?
These are protools features
Thank You Very Helpful Video🙌🙌🙌🙌.

We have a Shadow Hills ???
yeah sometimes !
ahahahaha
Personally, I wouldn't touch protools. Just a personally thing, but these guys seem to have their stuff down.
NEUMANN TLM 103 SSL XLOGIC SPDIF CRANBORNE AUDIO 500 8R SSL SIX CHANNEL API FILTER 565 SSL UVEQ is one of my vocal chain.
About to get a neuman TLM 103 for my first mic above 1k -> apollo. Stop me if you think a TLM 103 is a mistake xD

Very simply, a bluetooth mouse and keyboard and a secondary monitor.
Muteomatic on a talkback mic > foot switch
Every youtuber: "Link is in the description"... NEVER EVER ADDS THE LINK IN THE DESCRIPTION!
lol this is true, what link isn't there?
@@AndrewMasters You just added it. The Sennheiser MKE 400
Okay good. I usually group them up in the all of my gear link.
