Supplies:
lightweight cotton muslin fabric (white)
Mordant (I used Soda Ash aka washing soda)
Fabric Dyes (I am using Dr. Ph Martin Radiance which can be used as fabric dies or watercolors) shrsl.com/?dkve
Stamps (ArtNeko) www.artneko.com/displayItem/A3...
Ink: Ranger Archival (if using another ink test it first on washed fabric) shrsl.com/?dkzd
Inktense pencils or blocks shrsl.com/?dkzc
Stiff brushes
Textile medium (optional)
Lumiere paint by Jaquard for accents (optional)
Directions:
1. Prewash fabric and trim to size, I used a 10" wide strip as it comes off the bolt.
2. Mix a tablespoon of soda ash with 2 cups of very hot water. Soak fabric in this mix and ring out the exces.
3. Protect your table with plastic bags and spread out your fabric.
4. Apply dies. Pick colors near each other on the color wheel to avoid mud.
5. Let dry and press the fabric with a hot iron.
6. Hem the raw edges (i didnot hem the short edges as they were the bound edges off the bolt of fabric)
7. Using firm pressure and a well inked stamp add images to the fabric. Heat set.
8. Color with inktense pencils or blocks.
9. Apply water to the images to liquify the inktense and add more pigment from the block if desired.
10. Spatter more inktense if desired.
11. Accent with fabric paint, let dry and press again with a hot iron to set.

This was such a great project! I was eyeing the red inktense stick from the moment they showed on camera and when you picked it up and used it was so much better than I thought it would be.
So good to have you back!
5 years on.... This is awesome, I am just about to create painted, inked, fabric for stitching designs and this is great as I have both the DrPh, and ink intense. I have rit too, so I am on a great big learning experiment . Thank you for sharing.
I love your work and watching you teach. Thank you for all the great info
I love watching your videos. The scarf is so pretty. I really think like the leaf stamps. Thanks Lindsey for all the fine videos.
WOW!!! What a great project. If I start now I'll have Christmas gifts ready to pass on. Thanks for the idea.
Now I really can feel autumn in the air :) Looking forward to more seasonal projects!
Loved this Lindsay!! I definitely may have to give this a try. So nice to see you dipping your toes back into other crafts . LOVE LOVE LOVE your painting but i LOVE crafts too. I like how you share your mistakes and how to work them out... Thank you so much for the inspiration! Hugs! deb
I love the colours you chose, thankyou .
Your talent blows my mind. I was checking out your blog, which I do at least once a month to check out all the new content and this month you out did yourself. Three of my favorites were the shells, the birch tree and those 3 strawberries. I swear your painting of the 3 strawberries looked better than the real thing! Thanks again for sharing your amazing talent and knowledge.
+tlyria thank you:)
Lindsay you are so inspirational and also extremely motivational!!! I love your tutorials. stay awesome!!!
+Hermen van Gelder thanks!
This was so much fun to watch! You are a true crafter! Thanks Lindsay. Your scarf is so cute!
Thanks so much for sharing, Lindsay! I'm going to show this to my Mom, as she is always looking for that fabric in a color way that can never be found, lol. The only thing I may do is iron freezer paper on the back before stamping, just to keep it stable. I can't wait to do some fat quarters! And use my Inktense Pencils! 🙂
Lov love this project. I am so happy you did this would make great pillow covers!!! Changeable for the season's maybe. always learn so much from your videos and your happy can do attitude.
Great scarf! Love this idea.
That would also make a beautiful table runner for Thanksgiving! Beautiful as usual!
I would love to see a christmas scarf dyed and stamped and see some shimmer added to it. Would be gorgeous! Love the one you just did, and it looked fun to do.
I love the Golden Girls.. Great scarf and awesome tips. Thank you
I love this I have been Marbling Silk for years... But this is a another GReAT way.... Thanks you are GREAT..,
Great project Lindsay!
Beautiful Lindsay! Thanks for sharing!!!
i love your scarf lovely colors thank you for sharing
Wow Lindsay, what a great project! 😆 I think this is really cool. Thanks for sharing!
I've not tried stamping on fabric. something I will have to try. thanks for sharing this technique.
..me too! I love the idea
Such a cute scarf for Fall! :) thanks for sharing!
Beautiful and wow
I love this! It would make very affordable gifts!
Love love the leaves pretty 🤗
Fantabulous scarf! I really, really enjoy learning from you. You rock!
+Pat Cox thanks!
great idea and very inspiring! thank you!
Great project!
This was so interesting , thank you for the tutorial , I’ve been thinking of doing a shirt and this would be a good start 😊
You can also use half acrylic paint and half water as a fabric dye. I read this in a book by Annie Sloan.
love your shows, thanks xxx
Beautiful scarf! TFS
would make a beautiful table runner!!
I enjoying every video you done on UA-cam and your the only one that message me back not like other UA-cam videos I leave comments but your awesome at the stuff you do and looks amazing and so real looking too im getting back into drawing again.
thanks:)
Wow, Lindsay! How sweet of you to make such a lovely craft project for your fans who have asked for it!! I have the DR PH MARTIN's. (I think India ink). Will have to check. I have the INKTENSE blocks. I guess I would have to use vinegar or salt until I get the product you used. And I'm sure I have some muslin in my sewing stash of probably thousands of yards. LOL. But....true. Your project is very beautiful, and in my previous life (before FM/CFS) I would probably almost have mine finished. Since I am lying on my stomach on the bed to read, write and paint (and sometimes stamp), I'm thinking of a way to adapt your ideas to at least get the beautiful colors and leaves on something! MAYBE A CARD. You are truly an inspiration!!!
+Daphne Campbell Jinnette thank you:)
Picked up some VersaKraft aaaages ago, kind of accidentally as I needed a brown ink cube and it was the only brown in the shop. Not actually tried it on fabric yet but I like this project and may adapt it into a throw or a table cloth. I like the motifs and it would make use of my Inktense too.
+The Spin Doctor great idea!
Dear Lindsey, loved this idea. thank you for your time teaching us.
I was a bit lost about what or when to use the fabric medium.
is it better to buy pencil or block of this water color.
please let me know.
thanks again.
morokiya55 It is a personal preference to use pencils or blocks. Here pencils would have helped better to color in the images. The textile medium makes it more suitable for fabric and can be heat set to wash it later. I found out that if you first put an undiluted layer of textile medium down (well over the lines after stamping) and let that dry, the ink won't bleed.
I now know what to make for my daughters and mom for Christmas, thanks
would you dye wool yarn using this product
I loved this project and think it will be perfect to try with my great nieces while visiting them in DC. I'll make sure to videotape the whole fun experiment. Also wanted to tell you how much I loved your last video where you talked about the comments you thought you'd be getting from the video. I laughed so hard because you seemed so relaxed and ready to jump back into action. Seems like your vacation was great and you definitely deserved it. I thought your strawberries were AWESOME! Those Cottman's worked well for you! Sandy
Have fun crafting with the grandkids!
Thanks, I will.
very fun progect, it is a good idea to try s o mething for Christmas presence
I thin down acrylics with airbrush medium if I want to go really watery - not sure if that would impact your underlying dyes in this kind of project.
+The Spin Doctor that would be fine:)
Love Love Love!!! Thank you ! You are such a great teacher and so inspiring! Could I use Bombay ink from ph Martin ?
+encouraginghope I bet it would work fine, just test a scrap to make sure it is colorfast and not crunchy due to the India ink binder.
Did the Bombay ink work? I want to make shibori ribbon and would like to use what I already have. I know alcohol inks work but I'd rather use the Bombay bc it's something I dont use and have tons of so if I use it all it's no weight on my conscious
This was very fun to watch! Love the colors Lindsay! I hope to see more of these scarfs! Wouldn't it be great if you made a nautical themed one? XD
+starshinesoldier yes!
I found out that if you first put an undiluted layer of textile medium down (well over the lines after stamping) and let that dry, the ink won't bleed.
+Els Brussel cool! Thanks for the tip!
I found most everything else. One question about the Ph Martin paints; the manufcturer says they fade over time from light. Does the mordant stop this from happening?
The modent keeps it from washing out of cloth. All eyes fade eventually. That warning us more for fine art that will be hung and displayed, not for clothing.
your very welcome
What a cool idea! Looks great! Do you think you could do that with silk fabric?
You can definitely do the stamping on the silk fabric, but check which mordant you need for the dyeing - silk usually needs vinegar to fix the colours into the fabric but experiment with the soda ash too - it may work! :D Kate x
+Carol Moore yep, animal fibers need vinegar just like easter eggs:)
Hey, sorry if this has been asked before, but how well do ink stamps hold up in the wash? I’m thinking of stamping some napkins for a wedding gift but I’d hate for them to fade.
if you use a fabric ink and heat set them they should be fine
can you please make more pastel tutorials thank you
Will this survive being washed??
Can you use table salt to mix with the water to LLP retreat the fabic.
I think so
@@thefrugalcrafter th
what color kit are you using they offer 2
+Lorri Carnevale set b but look at the colors in the sets and get what you like best:)
Can you do this with wool? thank you, love this and Stamp School!
+escalosobre yes but use vinegar instead of soda ash for the mordant. Rule of thumb if it comes from an animal (silk, wool, eggs) use vinegar. If it comes from a plant (cotton, linen, hemp) use a salt.
+thefrugalcrafter Lindsay Weirich Or protein fibres versus polysaccharides ;) Weird tip: rice vinegar seems to make silk really shine versus other types. No a clue why. I spin Mulberry and another type of silk my mind has just gone blank over - spins beautifully - and you have to wash it in vinegar after shocking the finished yarn and rice vinegar makes it look great I found. I usually spin it as a mix with wool and camel
hair though which feels lovely but can't be dyed as a finished fibre alas. I got sent some musk ox hair - a 10g tiny tiny sample bag - feels amaaaazing. I was going to buy some but £1,000 per kg!!! Merino wool is about £30 a kg, best silk is £60...!
Thank you Lindsay!
@@thefrugalcrafter Help, I'm trying to think what fabric comes from eggs? p.s. love your demo, thank you
@@MoMaryR I mean if you dye eggs like for Easter 😆
I wounder if brusho may work with this? nice one lindsay.
That would be interesting to try, Ian, perhaps on a scrap piece of fabric as a tester.
wounder if brusho cud be made to sit on top of water and dip materials into the water? in saying that the plastic bag thing will work like that any way.
May need a fixative.
Try it - I would use dishwasher salt as the mordant - or alum may work.
+The Spin Doctor BTW Rich, I double checked the set I used, it is radiant set b (not c)
Artneko can't be found. I tried going there through your link to buy some of these products, from your blog also, and on Google and there seems to be a problem with their DNS server. :-(
They have gone out of business:(
@@thefrugalcrafter I have some Aqua Inks made by Marabu. Will those also work for dying fabric?
would the distress reinkers work? could you set the colour with salt?
You may need a fixative, as Distress inks are water-based.
+kim ryan hmmm, test the brightest. Olors and use a mordant. They are meant to release with water so it might be tough to get them to stain the fabric.
+thefrugalcrafter Lindsay Weirich The reactivation is only because they have a retardant to slow drying and - like any watercolours - are liftable. You may be able to dye with them but I know some are mixes of dyes and you might see them separate on wet paper. pH does alter colours of some dyes so try dishwasher salt or table salt (neutral) rather than soda ash (alkaline) to be safe.
thanks all for the advice. I'll let you know if it works. I'll probably just try a white bandana to start.
+thefrugalcrafter Lindsay Weirich I was just thinking of the blue and green colour palatte. chipped sapphire, peacock feathers, mowed lawn etc. those colours would look very "under the sea" and would look great with your new seahorse stamps, actually, all your nautical stamps. I wanna come play in your wonderland- but I don't think I'd want to leave. Lol. 😉😉😉
can you use watercolor pencils
+Lorri Carnevale I think you can get by with them if you use textile medium and if you need to dash it use a mild soap and cold water.
bring in the sequins!! >u
ohhh, they could be holiday table runners, or go be part of the centerpiece of a table, talored to your event.
You could use that technique to make a bandana.
Hey Lindsay, I saw this on your blog but did not know what to do for the giveaway you were talking about! Where on the blog do I go or what am I to do? I would really like to win the stamps! Please let me know.. Thank you! Oh and your scarf is so pretty! I love scarves! I collect them.. so making them would be a fun project for me to get into! Wish I could get a free set of those inks! I have been wanting to try them out too but they are way over my budget!
there is a link to the post in thedescription, just leave a comment on that blog post.
Oh ok.. That is all I needed to do was just leave you a comment on your blog? I thought I was to do something else..LOL!! I was looking everywhere on your blog clicking everything I could trying to find what I was to do..LOL!!! OK I will go back and comment! Thank you! I feel so dumb now!!
I went back and left a comment on your blog.. God bless :D
Hi! Do you have an address where we can send you things?
I don't have a PO box, thanks for asking tho:)
Yup "washing soda" is the UK name - properly called Sodium Carbonate - should not be hard to find in the US via EBay or Amazon. Soda Ash or Soda Crystals (NOT baking soda!) are the other common names. Personally I use dishwasher salt (courser version of table salt) as it's cheaper.
Fantastic...I can get a HUGE bag for £1 from my local market so now I've got another use for it :)
Will Borax work as a mordant?
kits on sale for 95 they are 110 on their website
massage not rub...
Could really, really use some sewing machine tutorials.
Hi artneko I'm Neko Neko.... no one will ever see this 😢😢😢
And first. Cotman bad blah blah blah. real artists don't blah blah blah again. lol. thought this would work with you telepathy on the other video. don't want to let you down you know. 😉😉😉
