    EXACTLY the information I was looking for! Thank you so much. This idea occurred to me the other day--inspired by kaleidoscope view of my iWatch face. I have a million of those images I've snap shotted. Is that a word? I like the way I can deepen the borders to add depth to the existing colors of a quilt block-in theory for me so far. I tried Sharpie and diluted the application with rubbing alcohol, and it did 'bloom' like watercolors do to diffuse and spread, growing fainter toward the outer edges. Your video was reassuring, inspiring, informative and beautiful. Thank you.

      I am entertaining the thought of using this on
      Silk Scarves...
      I have also used (don't laugh)...
      Wilton Food Coloring (not the cheap food coloring).
      it's amazing how beautiful the colors are... I first was
      the silk in a vinegar water... then rinse.
      After using the Food Coloring I IRON the cloth.

    Does this has to be heat-set after the paint dries?

  • @TheKathinator1
    @TheKathinator1 5 років тому +7

    You've inspired me!!!! I was searching for methods to create images on fabric and this is it!! I've ordered everything. I have two questions:1. Did you heat set afterwards?2. Did you wash to remove the gel? I would think it would be softer then

    • @ThreadSketched
      @ThreadSketched  5 років тому +5

      That's great! So glad you are inspired! You do not have to heat set after coloring the fabric. And typically, I do not wash a piece after painting, as it does fade slightly. The gel does not leave much, if any feel to the fabric and dries clear. You might want to try it on some scrap fabric 1st, let it dry, and see what you think.

    I can honestly say I've never seen or heard about this technique before! it seems pretty awesome! but I do have a few questions: what happens after you finish painting, do you need to scrape the gel away? do you just leave it to dry? what is the process?
    and how do you wash it? is there permanent order for every fabric using those kind of pencils or do you just wash it normally? for example if it's on a shirt, am I supposed to wash it as the instructions on the shirt say or is there difference set of instructions because of the paint?
    And will this work with any type of pencils or do you need those type of pencil specifically or maybe any kind of watercolor pencil will work?

    • @ThreadSketched
      @ThreadSketched  5 років тому +21

      Hi Moonshiro, thank you so much for watching. The Intense brand pencil color become permanent on the fabric once it has completely dried. The fabric should be natural fiber such as cotton or silk. The gel does not have to be removed at all. If you decide to wash the fabric, just use the washing instructions for that particular fabric. The colors are permanent, but keep in mind that they do fade a bit with each wash. Have fun!

    Technical question: Do you heat set, wash out the Aloe gel? What does the fabric feel like when finished?

    • @ThreadSketched
      @ThreadSketched  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks for the question Beatrice. I typically do not heat set anything. It is not necessary based on my own experience. There is also very little, if any stiffness to the fabric.

I have, however, been considering making the designs available again, but instead of paying me, I would ask recipients to donate proceeds to a well known charitable organization that is near and dear to me. I will have to dust off my software program to see if I can still send design files. My old outdated website contains my email address if you decide to communicate further. Thanks again for your comment.

    Does using Aloe Vera Gel make the fabric stiff? How is it different from using fabric medium?

    • @ThreadSketched
      @ThreadSketched  7 років тому +7

      There is some difference in the way the fabric feels, but barely noticeable. Several differences (in my experience) between the use of gel vs. medium. Medium is a fixative that creates the most permanent bond of ink to fabric, but also leaves behind a stiffness that is more evident than gel. Think of aloe vera gel as thick water. Gel simply saturates the ink allowing it to flow into the fabric just like water, but will not bleed as freely as water. If you plan to wash your painted project, any stiffness from the gel will wash away leaving most of the original ink. Fabric medium will pretty much feel the same after washing, but will preserve the ink in your project better than gel.

    • @ThreadSketched

      Thank you Riham. If I understand your question, you can use fabric medium with acrylic craft paint, which will turn it into fabric paint. Also, if your question is, can you use medium with the Inktense instead of gel, yes you can. The fabric medium simply makes the ink more permanent, easier to control, but stiffer when dry.

      I have painted t-shirts with some success. There is some initial fade in color, but still looks good after several washes. You could also use fabric/textile medium and help hold color even better. You can see an example of the fabric medium I use in my Amazon Associate shop on my website.
