When the hearts are turned upsidedown and to the side it reminded me of how I would draw hearts in order to draw spades and clovers.

Hi Angie, I love your videos and have learned a lot. I do have a questions. What would you recommend for using the thickened dye for stenciling my design onto cotton fabric? Are there any tips that can help with this process? I want to use cosmetic sponges to dab on the thickened dye, is this a workable idea? I have collected all my tools and materials, now I am ready to put my idea to work. Can you help before I start? Thank You.
Hi! I think using sponges and a stencil would work well. A couple of suggestions:
1. Make sure you put something between your shirt layers to avoid the dye going through both layers of the shirt. I use a piece of cardboard and then a I add a piece of wax paper to keep the dye off of the cardboard.
2. I've never tried makeup sponges, but I've used sponge brushes from the craft store. I think makeup sponges would probably work though. When you are going around the edge of the stencil, don't add a lot of dye to that area or it will leak under the stencil. Instead if it is possible kind of brush your sponge in toward the shirt from the edge. I personally would clean the edge up with a paintbrush later, but I know not everyone would be comfortable with that.
3. Start off adding a small amount of dye. You can always add more, but start of adding a little bit to see how much the dye moves on the fabric.
@@FunEndeavors1. I'm designing fabric which will be a single layer and, I'm working on the floor with a plastic tarp under my work. The sections are 8" wide x 68" long to be sewn together when dry to form 3 large sections of fabric. 18 strips total, 6 strips per fabric section.
2. I will not need to clean up the edges because I'm looking for rough edges with this design. Thank you for the heads up for my next design.
3. I'm using the make up sponges because I have a box of 30 of them.
4. Great tip on brushing inward away from the edges of the stencil, I'll be careful when dabbing on the dye paint, I don't want crisp lines but, I don't want big clumps of dye paint either.

This was fun. I used to screen print with this dye. It just needs thicker chemical water.
That's a great use for thickened dye. I haven't screen printed in years, but I think it would be fun to get back into.

Where did your aunt buy the dresses and what brand name? It’s so tricky to find white blanks for a reasonable price if you can find them at all
I think she bought them at Scheels in Colorado. I don't have any idea what brand they were though.

Do you let ot cure for 24 hours before washing like tie dye. Do you need urea aswell or can you paint without it. Its difficult to find where im from.
It dried out before 24 hours because it was so thick, and I didn't use Urea. Urea would help keep it from drying out as quickly, but it isn't necessary.
In high school we painted fabric but we used wax to keep the part we didn't want colored clean then after we ironed the wax up with paper towel there was a fancy name for it but I've forgotten it.
Batik?
That's cool. I agree with Daina, batik is the technique you probably used. I think that would be a fun technique to try.
Hi, can't this paste be made in hot boiling water?
This dye is intended to be used with room temperature or cool water.
For how many days we can preserve this dye solution?
If you add the soda ash to the dye like I did, it must be used immediately. You can't store it because the soda ash will start to react with the dye.
Why did you add sa to the dye instead of soaking in sa?
I added the soda ash to the dye because I was only painting a small area of the dress. I also didn't want to have to wear gloves and a mask if the dress was dry to be able to paint it. Since my aunt wanted the majority of the dress to be white, I brought them into my kitchen table and painted them in there so that there was no chance of a stray fleck of dye getting on the dresses. I was comfortable having the dresses on my kitchen table since they weren't soaked in soda ash.
