    I'm 100% new to this. Im hoping to use a similar method to "watercolor" paint on cotton muslin clothing articles. As well as a sweatshirt material. Does the dye come out after being washed several times ie does it generally hold up to about 20 washes?

    • @onlinefabricstore

      Hi Becky, For certain other types of dye, you can use soda ash as a fixative, but not for Rit dye. I'm not aware of anything you can make at home as a fixative for Rit.

    I'm painting a large piece of stretch lace to make butterfly wings so I want the dye in specific areas. The fabric is too large for the microwave. Will the fixative be enough to set the colors? Thanks!

      The fixative may be enough, especially if you aren't washing it a lot.

    What other type of fabrics might this work ? Like satin or silk ?

    • @onlinefabricstore
      @onlinefabricstore  7 років тому +2

      This multi-purpose Rit dye works on silk and other natural fibers. We also carry Rit Color Perfect Dye, which would work well for this technique. It comes with different applicators, the dye is pre-mixed, and it doesn't need heat. For synthetic fabrics like polyester, we have Rit Dyemore, however, it needs lots of sustained heat when dyeing, so it might not work well for this sort of thing. Find all these dyes here: www.onlinefabricstore.net/brand-rit.aspx?product_group=fabric-treatments&product=fabric-dyes&product_sub_group=liquid-fabric-dye

    • @onlinefabricstore

      If it's silk chiffon, it should work, but it won't work on polyester chiffon.

    Gorgeous result! Could you do this with Dylon dye? What would be the procedure for that? Thanks in advance 😊

    • @onlinefabricstore
      @onlinefabricstore  7 років тому +1

      Hi Lisa. Yes, you can do this with Dylon dye. It would be done basically the same, but instead of microwaving it, just cover it with plastic and let it sit for a while. I've heard anywhere from a couple of hours to 24 hours. Good luck!

      Thank you. Do I need to use salt at any stage?

    • @onlinefabricstore
      @onlinefabricstore  7 років тому +1

      Yes, you will need 4 tbsp of salt per packet of dye, which you would dissolve in the dyebath before dyeing.

    • @onlinefabricstore
      @onlinefabricstore  5 років тому +2

      If you are unable to take the fabric off the furniture, we wouldn't recommend using Rit dye. It has to be rinsed out or else it may come off on clothing. If you are able to take the fabric off, you may be able to do it, though with large quantities you wouldn't be able to heat set it with a microwave. Using a hairdryer before rinsing it might work.

    Is the fabric used cotton? This would be perfect for faux fur

    • @onlinefabricstore
      @onlinefabricstore  6 років тому +1

      Yes, the fabric is cotton, but unfortunately it wouldn't work on synthetic fibers like faux fur.

    I would imagine the hand painted dye washes out a lot faster than immersion/tie dying?

    • @onlinefabricstore
      @onlinefabricstore  7 років тому +1

      Since the fabric isn't sitting in a hot dye bath for a long period of time, this is likely true. Other types of dye, like Dylon Permanent Dye (www.onlinefabricstore.net/brand-dylon.aspx), may be better if you plan on washing the fabric a lot.

      Its the covers for seat pads I want to dye.. but how would I stop the dye from one side of the seat pad leaking to the other?

    • @onlinefabricstore
      @onlinefabricstore  5 років тому +1

      Yes, Dylon should work for this as well. You can put a plastic bag in the seat cover. That won't stop bleeding completely but will help. If you're worried about dye pooling and soaking into the other side, you could try doing it on a metal rack so excess dye will drip down and not pool.

    Can you use dope dye for this process?

    • @onlinefabricstore
      @onlinefabricstore  6 років тому +1

      Dope dyeing (or solution dyeing) is done as the fibers are spun into yarn to make the fabric. Do you mean can this be done on fabric that is dope dyed? White fabric works the best, though other light colored fabrics could work.

    What is this fixative you speak about? Do you have a recommended brand?

    • @onlinefabricstore
      @onlinefabricstore  9 років тому +1

      angelo telemaque We used Rit fixative, which is designed to work with their dye. You can find it here: www.onlinefabricstore.net/rit-dye-fixative-liquid-.htm Other dyes work differently, so if you're using a different brand, this may not work. Many dyes use soda ash, for example.

    Couldn't you just throw it in a clothes dryer and skip all the plastic wrap and microwaving?

    • @onlinefabricstore
      @onlinefabricstore  9 років тому +3

      Darris B. Nelson Setting the dye in a dryer may stain the inside of the dryer. If using a microwave is not an option you can use a hair dryer or an iron to heat-set the dye. If you use an iron, you may want to cover both the ironing board and the fabric with an open paper bag to protect the iron and ironing board from absorbing dye. Hope this helps!

    • @mamalovesthebeach437
      @mamalovesthebeach437 9 років тому +1

      OnlineFabricStore.net Thank you, it does. I don't use plastic wrap or own a microwave. Given your thought about staining the dryer, I'll try putting the fabric in a muslin bag and putting it in the dryer.
