  • On a rainy night in 1970, Captain Jeffrey MacDonald, a surgeon and a Green Beret, made a frantic call for help. His wife and children had been brutally murdered. But was it an attack by crazed, drugged out hippies? Or did MacDonald kill his entire family?

Just for the record, Dr. Baby Killer was NOT a Green Beret. He was a surgeon attached to a Green Beret unit. He did not receive any GB training. Please don't insult the GB's by giving Mac credit for being one.

He only did a one -year surgical internship at Columbia-Presbyterian after killing his family. He’s referred to as a trauma surgeon as well, which seems very strange considering a general surgeon usually does 5 years of a demanding residency. He only did one year. Maybe this was allowed during wartime?

This is very local news to me. My dad was still in the Army at Ft Bragg when this happened. Everyone said that he was guilty.
" He's guilty as hell". I was around the same age as Kimberley.
I spent the night with a lot of friends who lived on the base and we ( kids)weren't allowed to walk outside at night.
It wasn't because of this either. It was always like that.
We had to stay on the porch or yard.
MPs drove by the house every half hour.
This was before the murders too. We liked waving to the MP's each time they drove by and got excited when they waved back.
Hippies walking around the base would be very noticeable, especially at night.

This is one of my earliest memories of true crime. I’ll never forget reading in Joe’s book that according to the autopsy reports, that monster held his little girl ON HIS LAP while he stabbed her. His were the eyes she was looking into while she died. I don’t know motive: whether he was high on amphetamines from long shifts, or he was having an affair and wanted out, or just couldn’t face the responsibilities of being a husband and father. But I know HE did it.

If this had been a home invasion, would the gang not have targeted him primarily? He would be the greatest threat to them, they would make sure he was dead first. Highly unlikely that he would be the only survivor.

    • @kristenschnese698
      @kristenschnese698 3 роки тому +2

My take of that is this from what I read Dr McDonald was trying to help clean up the drug scene that was rampant in the Military back then and his family was possibly targeted because of that? Why would they kill his family? To get him to stop fighting the drug scene. Why does a sexual predator snatch certain children out of a home or a certain woman and not their brother or sisters? Or another woman?Same kind of thing i think can’t figure out how a psycho thinks.

Seems like as a doctor he would know not to remove the knife, it’s the sort of thing you learn in basic first aid. When something is forced into he body like that it somewhat staunches severed blood vessels, yanking it out only causes the blood to flow more freely since it doesn’t appear that he had the things at hand needed to stop the gush.

I live about an hour away from Fayetteville/Fort Bragg so this case holds a particular fascination for me too. Fatal Vision was chilling and had me shook only slightly less than Helter Skelter. Jeff McDonald was the Scott Peterson and Chris Watts of that time period. He was viral before there was such a concept. I am really looking forward to hearing your observations on the investigation and trials and what you think happened. 🙌🏽

Great job on this. New to the channel but have been fascinated by this case for many years. One thing I have never understood is why Jeffrey removed the knife from Colette's chest? Here's why. I'm not a doctor. Compared to him, I am a massive novice. But I am a CPR/First-Aid instructor. Stay with me here. On day two of my courses, we drive home a fundamental point: :"Do NOT remove impaled objects; ever. Glass, weapons, rebar.... unless you have to remove it to save their life (e.g., removing an impaled object to remove someone out of a burning car) leave impaled objects exactly where they are. It's a simple concept. The impaled object can keep blood loss minimized. Also, we aren't trained to remove such objects. Jeffrey was a doctor. He was (according to him) injured and in his home. Leave the effing knife alone. He knew better. He wasn't in an operating room, according to him, he was too busy being tangled up in his jammies to protect his wife and kids from a roaming band of hippies. Removing the knife might not seem like a big deal, but it makes absolutely no sense.... unless you wanted to ensure that someone bled out.

Not only did he survive, but he suffered mostly superficial injuries while his wife and children suffered brutal overkill. The alleged intruders continued inflicting vicious injuries postmortem on the wife and children, but these marauding hippies just let the husband peacefully pass out without continuing to beat, bludgeon and stab him with knives and ice picks? Sure. And the careful, self-inflicted puncture wound that collapsed one of his lungs was the worst injury he suffered while his wife was utterly obliterated.

My last comment (I promise) - why would 4 adult killers go into a home with zero weapons, take time (while MacD stays asleep) to find a varied set of weapons in the home, then brutally kill 3 people then do almost nothing to the only adult male there and then just leave, leaving the dude still alive?
    Answer - they wouldn’t.

Love your podcast guys- so glad you’re doing this case! I believe I first heads it on Crime Junkie and became obsessed, but CrimeJunkie is a terrible podcast for factual reporting lol I’ve been misled by them too many times now. You guys have spoiled me with true crime because of your straight facts and not having an agenda. Once I heard this case covered by TrueCrime garage I got a totally different opinion! He is definitely guilty, there seems to be a strong connection to men that cheat and men that murder their families. Obviously not all do both but Scott Peterson, Chris Watts, this guy. The psychology behind the crime is fascinating. Although this is a heartbreaking case 💔

One bit I’ve always thought about his ‘story’ of him awaking and hearing both Colette and Kimberly screaming - I figure it’s ‘true’ in that he suddenly ‘un-snapped’ out of it (sort-of woke up from his rage trance) while he’s doing the initial attack and heard them both screaming at him - in the master bedroom as they were all (the 3 of them) there together at that time. So he used that in his ‘story’ because their words in fact were in his head - then he had to stick with that storyline. Terrible, he uses some bit of truth (their screaming words) to craft his lie.

So glad to have found this podcast after Tim and Lance stopped doing Maura Murray. Their new podcast is so boring, and I now exclusively listen to you guys because of your fascinating insights and legal minds.
I do have to say I think your prosecutor bias came out a little bit in this episode. Just because of a supposed “playboy lifestyle” and other unconventional choices he made doesn’t make him guilty. As you also know, and as you’ll get into, Stokley seemed to want to confess before she sadly passed away. In addition the wife’s father Kassab really had it out for Jeffrey after he went on TV. There was always enough reasonable doubt, and obviously there was enough reasonable doubt if the 4th circuit continued dismissing his case.
I’ve always personally thought there was ample reasonable doubt for not guilty. Not saying he didn’t do it, but too much reasonable doubt in my mind. Too many unanswered questions, and a lot of interesting clues I hope you guys are going to cover without bias.

I thought I knew everything about this case but no.. I wonder something with regards to him saying some people instead of we’ve been stabbed. Could it be because he was possibly in shock and possibly because he is a Dr and we can’t write things in present tense so so maybe he was just thinking like a Dr would writing a dr note? I am on the fence with him as to if he did it but can amphetamines cause hallucinations? Or the combination of that and lack of sleep? But also didn’t they find that strand of blonde hair that didn’t belong to the family? I don’t think he killed his family jerk that he was to Collette however I do have experience with military men and they can be jerks . in the Navy even in the 80’s , the Chaplains would stand on the ships deck and pass out condoms to the guys going ashore and say don’t make any mistakes..

The fact he was taking amphetamines and hadn’t slept for 48 hours prior to the murders clinched it for me. He obviously wasn’t a family man the way he lied about going to Russia when the new baby was due, and seemed more interested in being a playboy. Glad he’s never managed to get paroled

Your sponsor bits are kinda horrendous, they go on forever. Just do it once at beginning or end, ugh!
Due to these spots I have to downvote.

In my opinion the entire truth of this case will NEVER be known.
Jeffery MacDonald may have made questionable statements in the 911 call but who can truly say how one would react faced with the same situation?
Mistakes were made in this case from the start. Mishandling of evidence, too many people permitted in the crime scene, not considering intruders from the start...
Only those in the home that night truly know what happened.
I have read alot on this case and heard podcasts and watched videos...I am not totally convinced Jeffery MacDonald is guilty.
One thing I do believe that Freddie Kassab was the driving force behind Jeffery MacDonald's conviction. I understand the need for justice for a loved one but perhaps Jeffery MacDonald was the offering to satisfy the need to hold someone responsible.
