"Hello Clarice. It's good to see you again." is Jim Carrey in The Cable Guy. That's where people get that from. He's just doing an impression, but people thought it was a direct quote.
These quotes are remembered wrong because they've been spoofed and referenced so many times in commercials, songs, and comedy sketches that people confuse the spoofs and mock ups with the actual movies.
I’m pretty sure “Hello, Clarice” came from three separate things: -At the end of Silence of The Lambs, he almost says it when he calls her while hunting Chilton. -In The Cable Guy, there’s a scene where Jim Carrey parodies SotL and says it -In Hannibal, the sequel to SotL, Lecter DOES say it on the phone to Clarice.
Yes but in "Tommy Boy" Chris Farley says "Luuuke, I am your faather" while speaking into a fan. Thats why i say it that way. I think most of these "mandella effects" are just obvious (and maybe purposeful) misquotes. Somebody does an imitation, not caring about whether or not its right and it just sticks. Usually because its funnier that way.
"Luke, I'm your father" feels like an intentional misquote - it provides more context. "No, I'm your father" feels almost nonsensical in comparison. I bet that's the case with a lot of these "misquotes".
Watch Hannibal, not Silence of the Lambs. Its not a misquote at all, just too many people being too quick to point something out and trying to be right.
Yeah the scene in the movie Hannibal where he kills inspector Pazzi and Clarice calls him to try to save his life, Hannibal answers and he says “is this Clarice? Well hello Clarice”
James, you are crazy with these “explanations” on why people get quotes wrong. The more logical and rational explanation is obviously an alternative dimension. Because people are perfect and never forget anything or remember stuff wrong.
It's many of us though... so we all remember wrong? Millions of us have very bad memory? BTW another recent change is the Tut death mask, it has a cobra and an eagle instead of just a snake. The world is flat now too haha

@jerel That may be true, but just about everything has been done before. (including the claim that it's all been done before, of course.) The important thing is that James puts his own style into it. Chiefly, his attention to detail, (including seemingly random asides that go on to add to our understanding, even if only on the level of things like character development) odd observations to make us think or chuckle, and genuine love and fascination for the subject matter. I mean, come on, man. Basically any media, whatsoever, is filled to the brim with borrowings from earlier works, leaving only the meniscus for original work.
I really wanted to meet James at PAX east but unfortunately he wasn't there.. I got to meet Mike Matei though! He signed an NES game for me and was nice enough to take 10 minutes answering my silly fan questions even though I didn't purchase any of their DVDs. He even made me a drawing of AVGN with Shit Pickle for free. From watching their episodes, I thought he'd be a motherfucker but in person he was the nicest guy you could talk with. I still hope to meet James one day!!
It's weird how people with one really famous character seem to be extremely different from that character. Mike's not the only one; look at Sandra Bullock. All of the characters she plays are annoying, but in person she's an understanding sweetheart.
I always assumed "Hello Clarice" and "I want to suck your blood" was because people weren't sure they could do the accents well so they say something that will let you know which character it is. I've said "Hello Clarice" because I was doing a Hannibal accent but didn't think anyone would know who it was so I said Clarice so it would be more on thr nose.
And as I've said for years it's the parodies that people seem to remember and are more recent than the originals, taking the place in our memory very often which can change the collective memories as humans are known and factually proven to have pliable, changeable memories which is how and why people used as witnesses in court cases have been completely wrong before, yet they were telling the truth on what they believed their memory to he as far as their description goes. "Hello Clarice" is real. It was from the sequal. The Hannibal 2001 movie trailer opens up with the line of Hannibal calling Clarice and saying "is this Clarice? Why hello Clarice"
True but growing up in the 90s before Hannibal came out in 2001 I can tell u that people would still say hello Clarice when doing a Hannibal impression
I'm pretty sure Anthony Hopkins did say "Hello Clarice" towards Jodie Foster in his great Hannibal voice. However it was not in the movie, he had said it at an awards ceremony like the Oscars around about the time of the movies and both his and her popularity for the role. Still trying to find it, but I remember he was on the podium and she was in the crowd.
+What is Real Its only a "Quote" now. Back then he was just literally saying "Hello" to a fellow character. I don't think he was trying to quote the film at all.
I'd like to add that is not uncommon for movie producers to release trailers or previews with scenes that do not make it into the final cut of the film, or they string scenes together just for the trailer, e.g. a scene of supporting characters shocked (cue Foley effect of gasping crowd) following a benign scene from another part of the film. Sometimes these don't even make it to a "director's cut." They're lost; you can only find them in the trailers. Perhaps people remember a "quote" from one such scene.
Here's another line that was never actually said aloud by the alleged source: "Goodnight Gracie." See, George Burns and Grace Allen had a show called _Burns and Allen_, and at the end of every episode George would say, "Say goodnight, Gracie." Most people remember her saying, "Goodnight Gracie," but she never did. She would simply say "goodnight." And yet everyone falsely recalls her saying "goodnight Gracie." Funny, huh?
But then there's no joke. Did people invent a classic joke out of nowhere and then give the credit to Burns and Allen? They must have said it at least once. Also, how would people not remember the ending of a famous show that they watched? That would be like if we remembered every Seinfeld episode ending with Jerry saying "and you wanna be my latex salesman!"
My theory on the Legosi "bleh bleh" is that it's a warm up technique to get into a character impression. Similar to what people do when doing Schwarzenegger or Stallone impressions. Or even the french laugh when soeaking in a mock french accent. At some point the bleh became so common over the years people who hadn't even seen the movies must have attributed it to a quote.

@@taber3531 Well actually, when Vader tells Luke he's his father, Luke's lines are "No... no, that's not true... That's impossible..." To which Vader replies "search your feelings, you know it to be true" And Luke yells "nooooo" twice
There actually is a part in Silence of the Lambs where Hannibal says "Good Evening, Clarice" but with his back turned while inside the cell, not a close-up of his face or while on the phone, the line is sort of a mixture of both illusive and misquoted, since everybody says it wrong, and it was never really Lecter's catchphrase anyway.
Hannibal Lector does say “Hello Clarise” however it’s not in silence of the lambs. It’s in Hannibal. When she calls the italian detective to warn him not to try to apprehend Lector by himself. Lector answers the phone and says is this Clarise? Well hello Clarise.
Many of the 60's stand up comedians did impressions, And Bela Lugosi was done as much as James Cagney. I would say the power of the T V medium brought it across to the masses.
Yup. Book Sherlock and popular movie Sherlock are basically two characters. When they made 2009 people whine about it until fans point out that hey made exactly a proper book Holmes.
@puffnisse While the deerstalker cap was never stated to be his hat, the hats that Sherlock wore in the countryside were described in a way that the deerstalker would be a logical choice for him to wear. Sherlock wouldn't have worn it in the city.
I'm pretty sure the "Hello, Clarice" does come from the final phone call but the line is "Tell me, Clarice, have the lambs stopped screaming yet?". I think peoples memories just turn the "Tell me, Clarice" into "Hello, Clarice". The fact that it's a phone call where you traditionally say hello strengthens my hypothesis (such as it is).
Cavitie creeps every parody I seen have them say thier famous catchphrase "we make holes in teeth" twice, but all the actual commercials they only say it once.

“We don’t need no stinkin’ badges!” from Treasure of the Sierra Madre was actually “We don’t have to show you any stinkin’ badges!”
Insert the Quote:
*Do what you love, Love what you do*
it always amazes me after all this time James can keep making quality and interesting content
Hannibal DOES say "hello Clarice" but not in Silence of the Lambs. He says it in Hannibal right before he hangs the Inspector.
*_"HOUSTON WE'VE HAD A PROBLEM."_*
Hello, Clarice is from Cable Guy. I think that started the misquote.
Silence of the Lambs: the line is “What did you see Clarice”
“Lambs”
Captain Kirk never said "beam me up Scotty" and Bogart never said "play it again sam"
Technically, the former IS said. It's just in different ways.
You played it for her now play it for me
And dirty Harry never says "you feel lucky punk?"
I'm sure plenty of people have pointed this out but "hello, Clarice" actually IS a real quote. It's just not from Silence of The Lambs but the sequel Hannibal.
1:05 he says it at the phone in the "Hannibal" movie, so it exists
Ooooh I like this change of video! Love your gaming videos, but this is awesome.
-"I am your father"-
"No, I am your father"
-"nooooooo"-
"No..thats not true.."
Legocat studios actually it’s “no... that’s impossible...”
@@taber3531 the "nooooo" actually comes from Darth Vader in the prequels when he learns about padme
Legocat studios "that's... highly unlikely"
@@taber3531 Well actually, when Vader tells Luke he's his father, Luke's lines are
"No... no, that's not true... That's impossible..."
To which Vader replies "search your feelings, you know it to be true"
And Luke yells "nooooo" twice
*Everyone says* "Play it again Sam."
*What Rick really says* "You played it for her, you can play it for me!"
*And Ilsa says* "Play it, Sam. Play 'As Time Goes By.'"
@@AHHHHHHHHHHHHl Everyone says "play it again, Sam" because it combines parts of these two lines. It's a brevity thing.
I love this series, please do more of this James!
I hope you also cover the Wicked Witch of the West from The Wizard of Oz where people thought she said "Fly my pritties fly"
Mel Brooks, "Dracula: Dead and Loving It."?
My god I’m in stitches! Two of these are some of my favourite, corney impressions. No way am I stopping the ‘bleh bleh’ or ‘you dirty rat’
Many of the 60's stand up comedians did impressions, And Bela Lugosi was done as much as James Cagney. I would say the power of the T V medium brought it across to the masses.
Thanks Dracula, thanks to you, every vampire has to have a Romanian accent.
"Luke, I am a timelord" -Spock
What about "Elementary my dear Watson"?
That line never appeared in the Sherlock Holmes books, but it did in the movies.
ZuperNEZ It started in a Sherlock Holmes play back in the day, along with his hat.
Yup. Book Sherlock and popular movie Sherlock are basically two characters. When they made 2009 people whine about it until fans point out that hey made exactly a proper book Holmes.
Umm yeah that's was kind of my point!
@puffnisse While the deerstalker cap was never stated to be his hat, the hats that Sherlock wore in the countryside were described in a way that the deerstalker would be a logical choice for him to wear. Sherlock wouldn't have worn it in the city.
"I'm having an old friend for dinner" - Hannibal Lecter
I'm pretty sure the "Hello, Clarice" does come from the final phone call but the line is "Tell me, Clarice, have the lambs stopped screaming yet?". I think peoples memories just turn the "Tell me, Clarice" into "Hello, Clarice". The fact that it's a phone call where you traditionally say hello strengthens my hypothesis (such as it is).
The silence of the lambs one I remember he just says “Clarice” in that dramatic way at one point. I can’t remember what scene though.
Hey this guy does great reviews! He should try doing some video game ones, i bet they'd be great!
I don't know, he doesn't look like much of a video game nerd to me.
@@Mick_92 he's more of an ANGRY video game nerd.
Almost like he could possibly take us back to the past.
MisfitWaylon Yeah, to play some shitty games that suck ass.
Vulture X
But, I guess he would rather have a buffalo take a diarrhea dump in his ear.
I have done an impression of Dracula from the Bram Stoker novel.
Heard em, done em... never a Halloween without :D
It makes you feel extra weird when you didn’t even watch the movie, yet remember the quote wrong
Cavitie creeps every parody I seen have them say thier famous catchphrase "we make holes in teeth" twice, but all the actual commercials they only say it once.
The way you said “Mandela” had me dead
Saying something “wrong” like the “Mandela Effect”
5:10 Quick, re-edit this so that your misquoted title "Each Day I Die" properly reflects the correct movie title "Each Dawn I Die", and leave people forever wondering if they are experiencing the Mandela effect
"Hello Clarice" is probably most famous because of it's appearance in the original Hannibal trailer
Honestly, I think it’s just fun to stop for a second and go “blehhhhh” when you’re doing a Dracula impression
Alot of quotes get messed up since... The persons name is added to the line to give context to the quote. And then... Its repeated sooo many times... We think he says... Luke, inam you farther... Or... Play it again..... Sam
The names get added in for context and repeated a lot.
I love casablanca. Best movie... Watch it atleast every 3 months.
He never says play it again sam.
Hell say.. He hates that song.
The girl asks him to play the song. But... Not in that way. Which... Initally pisses boggart off.
2:39 Supposed to be “Blah, blah blah”, Adam Sandler can confirm
For an overview of famous misquotes, you sure spent most of the video on that Dracula thing. Not complaining though, good stuff.
'manDELLa' -- referring to the late South African leader. 'MANdala' -- referring to the object used as a focus in worship in various eastern religions... It's all in the stress.
This is probably the best video I have seen explaining how the Mandela Effect actually works. Keep making more videos.
Huh, I am almost certain that "hello Clarice" comes from the sequel.
Technically silence of the lambs is a sequel to manhunter.
MrParkerman6 well a 3rd movie is still a sequel to the sequel
It is in there
