I rly liked ur comment
But genesis also do what Nintendon't.
+Eneru did Nintendo use that at the time? That would have been an awesome comeback :)

*yawn*
That AVGN Genesis commercial was perfect.
ChronoSynthesis It was a pretty accurate parody.
Sega would be proud of the commercial.
it was the greatest thing ive ever seen.
*SEGA*! 💀
Too perfect
It's actually really wholesome that James made a career out of the exact same thing he was doing as a kid.
I appreciate how in the old video, young James is speaking in just about the same cadence and inflection as he does in angry rants during AVGN episodes
If you love what you do you never work a day in your life.
Hopefully not. Nintendo was pretty bad.
SEGA!
@@parapoliticos52 You're funny.
This is my favorite episode. Seeing him as a kid defend Nintendo against Sega is just priceless!
Is like a friendly & heavily biased nintendo nerd.
Yeah, but SEGA were suffering financial loses which is honestly sad enough for me to put my heart towards SEGA.
I wish james would do a video like this for Phillips cdi vs 3DO
@@maggs131 3DO wins no contest. While it was crappy, it was designed for playing games. CD-i was designed to play video CD's and have pretty but still backgrounds.
@@StormsparkPegasus I proposed that vs in pure jest but yes the 3DO wasn't a terrible system. I liked gex on it and I was introduced to flashback and myst thanks to that system. I never owned a Phillips cdi until recently as my console collection ballooned and yes its inferior as a game system but its zelda games and crappy ports of other games have a legacy all their own
Back in the day, you didn't choose a system based on which one had the best graphics or controller. You picked a system based off what your friend had. Your best friend have a Genesis? You got a Super Nintendo so you had max game options at the Blockbuster. That shit was a team effort!
I really wish I was older back then because that would’ve been AMAZING
I still got a ps4 cause most my friends had it. I later got xbox also to play with another friend.
@@gamingjay141 online multiplayer changed everything.
I feel for the kids who never got to invite friends over to play some mortal kombat or brothers in arms split screen... Online multiplayer is an excellent thing but I think we take it for granted now. Just 20 years ago it was a dream.

That "resoluation" instead of Resolution was amazing to watch. You had and still do have the passion for this!
I just realized that James speaks the exact same way as he did as a child when he complains about something
He's evolved a bit, but he's still him, yeah. That's a huge part of his charm.

The production of this video is very well done - I feel like it’s a timeless video regardless of upload date
One of the advanced features from this era is the ability for games to never need updates or need a company's permission to work over the internet.
Miss those days...
@damionmanuel890 while I agree with you, at least the games are playable. So many modern games come out completely broken at launch to the point they are unplayable.
True, but then if a game was broken, they had no way to fix it either. It was good and bad. Definitely more good though.
Also gaining access to secret characters through finding cryptic codes rather than just paying for them.

When James made his own Genesis commercial, I think it would've been so much better if the clips that he chose were purposefully from bad Genesis games. It could've got the point across more that you can make anything look awesome as long as you make the competition look worse.

Very informative, funny and heartwarming towards the end.
I had a Sega Genesi and never had SNES. But my friend had the opposite. We'd play Sega at my place and SNES at his. It was great. There is no contest. They are both great systems. Sonic The Hedgehog 2 and 3, Super Mario World, MKII on Sega, Street Fighter 2 on SNES, man I wish I was a kid again.
I've always thought mk2 was far better on the snes. Mk1 was definitely better on genesis
Genesis came out two years before the SNES. When you take thT into account the Genesis was amazing. The music in the Genesis was much better than the SNES. The Streets of Rage series as well as the Golden Axe OST blow anything that the SNES had away. The best OSTs on SNES were MM2 and Castlevania 4. Both great but they never had the booming bass and synthesizer that the Genesis could produce.
@@devilzdandruff9199 Better music than the DKC series? Final Fantasy 4 and 6? Chrono Trigger??? Mario RPG!?!?! You're silly!
Fronica You’re comparing a goofy flat OST like DKC to the music of The Streets of Rage series and you are calling ME silly? Are you trolling or are you serious? There are documentaries on Genesis soundtracks. The Genesis has the YM2612 audio chip, even SNES homers admit that the SNES audio was lacking.. even tho it came out a full two years after the Genesis.
@@devilzdandruff9199 Same way this very video literally compared the two systems side by side as evidence that what you just replied is false? That's admitting that Sega has better music by your reasoning? Ok Blanche (A Street Car Named Desire is looking for you).

I think everyone could.Once we get older we realize how silly we were and just how little we knew.

One thing that was not mentioned is that the Sega Genesis used to have a port to connect headphones. The feature was removed in later versions of it.
Sports games mattered a LOT back in the 90s...like WAY more than they do now. Those sports games on the Genesis made the Genesis better hands down for anyone who wasn't a nerd.
I wish Nintendo and Sega were still the top 2 contenders in the video game industry, and they were both going at each other's throats like in the early to mid 90's.
No please no, Sega sucks and Nintendo lives in the past. Now we have a whole indie community and we aren't slaves of some major game company anymore.
Well, obviously if Nintendo and Sega were still both the top 2 dominant forces in the video game industry...they would not be the exact same Sega and Nintendo we have now. They would be much more like they were in their glory days during the 16-bit era.
RetroGamerAaron Are you assuming in that situation that Sega and Nintendo would ride on the multiplayer FPS wave or that such a trend wouldn't have existed and we would still be playing plataform games?
RetroGamerAaron So it seems that Sega would have used that edge to surpass Nintendo once for all.
Vitorruy1
Sega already had an edge on Nintendo by going with CD's with the Sega Saturn. If Nintendo had gone with CDs instead of carts for the N64...who knows what would have happened. Things would have been a lot different.

Sigh....i wish i have a friend like James Rolfe.
He do know how to think.
Ikr
dat he do
Not really to be honest. I think he's trying but a lot of his reasoning is deeply flawed and he provides us with video proof that he's been biased towards Nintendo since he was a child. He got backwards compatibility completely wrong simply because he isn't aware of A) the value of the Master System back catalogue outside of the US, B) The fact that Genesis achieves backward compatibility through a simple pass-through device, otherwise already having the requisite hardware, unlike the Super Game Boy, and C) thinking an unreliable unlicensed 3rd party 'NES converter' which does little more than leach power and controller input from the SNES is comparable to backwards compatibility. Lack of research, lack of insight - but this can be seen throughout his catalogue of videos. I still enjoy them, but he's a lightweight when it comes to his technical understanding of the consoles he makes videos about. I could argue about other points in his video but the comment would become too long.
aqarius.net Yeah he is a lightweight, he is what you call a consumer and he tells it like a consumer, he never pretends to be more either and does not hide the fact that he just merely a consumer so I think you are looking at this and his other videos a bit wrong tbh.
aqarius.net Well, does it matter though? I mean lets be honest its all about preference and opinion anyway, cant really say something is objectively better in this matter.
This is a battle long over and Nintendo won that battle because at the time more people preferred it and they made better choices as a company wether in investments or in marketing.
But the nerd also plenty of times reveals Nintendo's failures like with the virtuaboy and Sega's wins like with the blast processing term.
But hey, as you seem passionate, why not try to make a video series yourself that is more about the facts?
Streets of Rage 2 was the best beat em up of all time with the best soundtrack of any 16-bit system. But Super Castlevania IV is probably my all time favorite game.

This is a great episode and I enjoyed it so much. I remember as a kid this exact battle that was waged between all my friends. I was lucky enough to get ahold of both consoles and I enjoyed them both. In the end the console that gave me the most memorable experiences was the SNES but the Genesis was a close second.

Same, I wasn't aware of any kind of console wars back then. Actually, Nintendo consoles were pretty much non-existent for me. Every kid I knew had a Sega, sure I knew about Super Mario but I had Sonic anyway. I never laid eyes on a physical NES or SNES until a few years back. On the other hand, Gameboy was super popular and everyone loved it.

You gotta love this guy. He gives answers to all the questions that REALLY matter.
Except he gets them wrong.
For example, most Genesis games run in 320p. The only SNES game running in that high resolution mode he mentioned is RPM Racing, and the sprites are still low resolution - beyond that game, mode 6 has too many compromises to be useful outside of clearer text in some menus.
He might want to also look into why the SNES's 8-bit databus was a serious issue. Or look into why so many 3rd parties booted the SNES cpu to a slower clockspeed with cheaper, more affordable SlowROMs.
Yes, they were really called that.
@@juststatedtheobvious9633 Build a ramp up your ass and let the Databus drive into it "micdrop".

I personally prefer the Genesis. There is no question the SNES was superior in terms of at least colors and sounds.
The Genesis always impressed me with the scrolling and parallax scrolling. They loved using those techniques.
In the end it all comes down to what you had lol. I was Genesis all the way cause that's what I had.
However game wise and anyone can argue all they want. The Snes had some absolutely awesome game's.
The Genesis had a ton a of game's that I personally love. I prefer Road rash 2 and 3, NBA jam tournament edition blew the snes version out of the water. I know this is not a popular opinion but Sonic 3 with sonic and knuckles in my opinion is actually better than Super Mario world.
Personally for me the high points of the Snes were Super Metroid , Mortal Kombat 2, and a link to the past.
I was not a huge rpg fan but I would pit Shining force 2 against Final Fantasy 4 and 6.
Both 16 bit consoles are absolutely legendary and I love having all my sega game's on my switch now.

I really like the Genesis. I love the SNES. What it comes down to for me is that the SNES' highs are higher, it's where third parties at the time were focused, and it's a more audio-visually versatile collection of hardware. But the larger amount of animation the Genesis can push does even things up a bit, especially in action games & shmups. I just wish it could have displayed more colours, too many games are a bit dingy because of it. But they both rock, the Turbo/PC-Engine absolutely does too.
Colors aren't super important, when it comes down to it 99% of games will look about the same on SNES and Genesis.
@@Gage_Brumley no
@@Gage_Brumley I don't agree with that, but I do think there's something else to consider. I know that the SNES has more colors, but I actually prefer the look of the Genesis because I think lesser colors looks better. I think it's just a matter of personal preference. I was always more into the Genesis. I never could really get into the SNES, although it was a great console.
I think a key thing to all of this is that the snes came later which means those advantages were always going to be there but both companies made sure there was plenty of quality on their system and ports of games to both are almost always very similar with each version having its better features
I had a super nintendo with mario all stars and back then I was so good at mario that I could play most of the levels without stopping (and this is how I realized that levels were designed that way); some older cousins had a genesis and everytime I'd go to their homes I wouldn't get the appeal of sonic. They say that it is a fast game, yeah.... but it's all on automatic! the levels are mazes where everything is stopping you constantly and the "fast parts" play themselves... What was I missing back then?
"Maybe everyone pisses on them" LOL I CANT WITH YOU LOL
When it comes to sound, i actually quite prefer the Genesis/Mega drive. it has a stronger "thwang" to it, the SNES has a softer touch to it, MD/Genesis just hits that sweet spot for me.
Both systems have must play games. Fanboy bullshit and stupid technical details aside, everyone should play Sonic and Mario and Star Fox and Virtual Racing and Phantasy Star 4 and Final Fantasy 3, etc, etc.
***** preach it brother I have similar views on the Gameboy and game gear owning both growing up in the early nineties always wanted a lynx and turboexpress
GameBoy Punk Oh yeah! The Gameboy and Game Gear have some awesome games. The Mario and Sonic games are of particularly high quality. I have the Lynx and Turbo Express as well. The Lynx only has a few titles worth playing, but it was an underrated system. The Turbo Express has plenty worth playing thanks to it being a portable TG-16, kind of like how the Nomad is a handheld Genesis. The Nomad eats batteries like a bear eats salmon, but damn was it awesome to play Phantasy Star IV on the road.
Well said sir
2-bit? I thought you were dead, man! It's been 4 years since your last video (I guess live gets in the way). Glad to see you alive.
***** yeah what happened man? its time for a new video after 4 years!
The yellowing of the super nintendo is a result of the plastic used. I think it is constructed with ABS plastic, which when left in direct sunlight over long periods of time, will begin to yellow due to oxidation. You can fix this by applying some hydrogen peroxide solution to the plastic and setting it in the sun for a few hours. It will look as good as new
I've heard some people opened NOS SNES units and even _those_ were oxidized. Sometimes the plastic was a real goof; I once picked a used unit up in a junky looking shop (in 2005, give or take a year) and the plastic on the front by the controller ports was literally just falling to bits in my hand.
@@101VoltsI have a nes that’s not yellowed
@@101Voltssadly I can’t say the same for my famicom tho it’s kinda yellowed
This is a video that perfectly encompasses everything it has to do with, Sega, Nintendo, and James. A perfectly put together video
I remember them both being equally as cool, it just depended on what game you were playing. But yeah I always preferred super nes.
These can be summed up in two sentences... "Genesis does what Nintendont." and "Nintendo is what Genesisnt"
It would be "Nintendoes what Genesis doesn't".

"Long live the 16 bits" instant chills
4:47 "They invented a super Nintendo." It's funny to hear someone talk about the SNES as something new and cutting-edge! So cool James was able to catch that on film!
so James is basically Nintendo’s Sammy the Sonic Kid on another timeline
He was the og Sammy the Sonic Kid
Hydra Arts but a Nintendo boy
There actually was no contest between me and my friends. Everybody and their mothers owned a SNES at my school. No one cared about the Genesis.
Same goes for Gameboy vs. Game Gear. I guess Sega wasn't very popular in Germany.
PlaystationDOES what Nintendowon't.
Pixar The Great didn't PlayStation copy Nintendo with the ps move?
Adrian Chapa lol he didnt replie beacuse he didnt have anything.
maybe not at your school. sega vs nintendo was about 50/50 in germany.
In Soviet (well not really soviet any more by the time) Russia almost everybody had megadrive 2, all 16-bit consoles where called "sega", lol
This is probally one of my favorite Cinemassacre videos!
It's crazy you still have those old video's. I'm not sure where a lot of my older stuff is
I'm not sure I can get past the chocolate milk story
Hell Yeah. Love that vitamin D!!!

sofullofpiss. Dr. Phil made me laugh tonight
sofullofpiss it's just as good as blast processing
I love how he kept his controllers. I bet he still has that NES right behind him.
I was around fifteen when the Genesis came out and their marketing really affected me into thinking it was the 'big kid' console compared to the Super NES. I wasn't alone, it was most certainly what the cool kids owned back then. We'd laugh at the Super NES and their 'sweat' on Mortal Kombat!
Hearing that Killer Instinct intro music gave me goosebumps. Me and my buddy back then spent entire afternoons playing that.
Please PLEASE tell me you made more of those videos as a kid.
Sean the cool guy according to Wikipedia, he made over 280 videos as a kid
there's one on youtube when he said that even as a kid..... he still get angry....... so AVGN Was created when he was kid
Wewser Lethal Dude his family bancropted.

What we didn't know then was that the 16-bit era game us a timeless style of games that never age. We were all looking forward to the 3D era but early 3D like PS1 doesn't hold up as well. 16-bit will always look good.
I agree 100%. To this day, I still think the 16-bit games look better than the PS-1 era games.
@@Mr_Don1 PS1 games actually have aged really well but they do need to be run at 9x the original resolution. Then they look even better than they looked on a CRT back in the day.
@@epicon6 Dude, I stick to playing with the original pixelated resolution, not only does Crash Bandicoot look completely off with the smooth polygons, it is such a horrible stylistic clash when the HUD elements remain low resolution and pixelated on top of ultra-crisp 3D graphics, it just looks awful together. But hey, thank god we have the option for each of our preferences.
True, although there are some 3D games that look exceptionally good for being PlayStation games. Still, I find that generally it was not until Sega Dreamcast that 3D polygonal graphics in games actually began to look good.
@@Anakunus you really think that Panzer Dragoon was unattractive? It was GORGEOUS! Virtua Fighter 2? Last Bronx? Virtual On is pretty good looking as well, Bulk Slash has great art direction and holds up really well also. Sega Rally holds up. Saturn Games actually hold up extraordinarily well, at least the good ones. Oh, and there is this game called Decathlete that is basically a showpiece for what the Saturn could do with polygons under optimal conditions.
James: “You merely adopted the game review, I was born in it, molded by it”.
this just is beyond impressive.. your content is so well made, thank you
im sure you are aware of smoking inside discolors a lot of things
and sorry also have to add.. mortal kombat belongs on sega.. so much better and i did just fine with 3 button controller?
