First,,,,lol Wow,,,,love your videos and thank you for taking the time to produce them. I subscribe to your channel because I do like the idea of the Ural. But there's just no way with the amount of riding that I do to keep up on the servicing and the repairs. I was a Honda Motorcycle tech for many years and I'm just spoiled with the reliability. I've been riding Harley Davidson bikes since 2003 simply because there are dealers all over the country , plus their reliability is now practically bullet proof. Please keep up the videos when you can,,,this is absolutely my favorite channel!!!

This was eye opening. My cT has developed a little braking squeal. I had attributed it to brake pads. This video makes me think if pads don’t cure the squeal I may check the studs. Thanks Bob.
I had tried brake quiet, replaced the pads with semi-sintered, used that paint on the back of the pads, nothing worked. I still had a squeak-squeak-squeak when coming to a stop. Turns out, it wasn't the brakes!
Love the channel 👍 Back in the 80’s I had a Cossack and sidecar with 2 wheel drive and a lever for reverse. No electric start. Loved it in the snow 😊 From the Highlands of Scotland
Scotland! Isn't it a requirement you put us up for a week if we come visit? Don't worry, not likely to happen so don't fret. In 2019 I was working on a plan to ship our rigs to Dublin Ireland from Savannah GA then fly over and spend a month riding about. Now, the world is not what I remember and the airlines are a chaotic mess. If things ever clear up, maybe I'll try again.
Yeah, once the mystery is gone it doesn't seem so intimidating. I would suggest disassembly in a tote/box/bin and video/get pictures of everything for YOU. I found the ability to go back to the video and pictures very quickly solved any confusion about which way what went.
The vacation was less grand than planned, but we did spend a lot of time at the Huntsville Rocket Center. I think we rode and saw everything they offer. For the space geek in me, it was a GREAT time.
Thanks for sharing. My wife and I are new Ural owners, and it’s nice to see art others are doing. The good and the bad. Hope the doggie is feeling better!!
Wow… that was an awesome video - thanks so much. Interesting that a missed machining step would make it out of the factory. You have to have a great sense of satisfaction knowing that the drive is now 100%. I know I would. Again, great detective work and great video! I hope Benny has recovered and is doing well. Have fun on your vacation!
I was somewhat proud of myself when it was all done and I've enjoyed the new "quiet brakes" option. Final Drive is doing good, has over 1000 miles on it now and so far, no signs of problems. Benny has another vet visit Monday. I don't know what it is, I mean, I know he's getting old-ish (well, 9) but he just isn't recovering well.
Excellent video. I just had to replace the output spine seal due to a leak and was hoping that I didn't have to crack the FD to replace the seal as the thought of doing a re-shim was a bit / lot daunting 🤔. Luckily I got to the seal from the outside, replaced it and all was good. I was very careful with torquing up the FD mounting bolts as I know the stud head pull through is a commonly reported issue - mainly due to people getting their Nm & Ft Lbs mixed up. I have a manual that states the gear backlash is measured at the edge of the output spline but is still quoted at .003" - .006" which would work out to be less than than way you did it because the larger radius of the output spline. Interesting !
Thanks. I haven't decided what the next video is yet, maybe time for some riding footage, or maybe my battery replacement, or maybe the hitch I welded up... so many options.
I was watching your video on the rebuild of the final & noticed what looked to be a Harley police seat?? I’m looking for sear options and would love to talk w/ you about it. I’m located in SC. How can I reach out to you?

Wheel on the bench, WD-40, a rag and about an hour. I had just finished fully servicing and cleaning both rigs and that's the best it is ever going to look. It's already a mess again and won't be cleaned until the next tire change.
Hi. So I am just curious as to how you typically ride your retro. My 2015 retro has the tall gear ratio and I do very little highway riding. I ride mostly NH and MA back roads. Some hills, but nothing crazy. I am in third gear 95% of the time on the 30-45 mph back roads. Its really in a great PowerBar range for these speeds. I typically never hit 4th unless I am over say 47/50 mph (Ural speedo). I need to downshift to third by 43/45ish unless is a steep downhill or I am lugging. Curious your experience?
I have the regular gearing. I just get on and go. I ride mostly on back roads and some highway (non-interstate) and will cruise about 62mph in 4th gear per the GPS. I tend to settle into that speed as it "feels right". We do travel interstates if/when we want to, but I really prefer not to do so, I just don't trust the other drivers. I have ridden the taller gear ratio and did not like what it did to first gear. I also didn't like where it moved the bottom end of 3rd gear. We ride in the mountains and the blue ridge parkway where I can easily stay in 3rd. With the taller gear I found I had to hit second more often to pull steep hills in a curve. Ideally, I would love to have two final drives, one for the mountains and one for the flats. EDIT: Oh, I will cruise 65 to 67 on the interstates, I have to consciously hold it there though, if I don't pay attention, 62 is where I'll end up.
and why I just got done emailing Jon to have gear in my FD on the 2018 replaced (going to a 9 gear, speedo be damned). After 10 years of Retros (have an 11 also for those who don't know, it's my avatar) can get the tire off without removing the torpedo...but it is easier to take it off...
I just wish I could make 3rd gear 5% "taller" and 4th gear maybe 8 or 10% taller. I don't like what the taller rearend does to the lower end torque, esp in the mountains. It's easier without the pontoon and takes maybe 1 minute to remove it... unless it is hot.
First,,,,lol
