I enjoy the ride and love the bike, I found out a few weeks ago that there is another fun thing that I hadn't thought of before, when people see an R3 pull into the parking lot they just assume that it is just some kid riding it and when I stop and take off my helmet and they see the salt/pepper hair and the all white beard they quickly turn and walk away in hopes that none of their friends saw them looking at the old man on the bike, what can I say, old guys rule.

My bikes did start off as cheap transport but they are more of a toy now, but I like to justify having the VTR by saying that they don't make them anymore so it's now a classic as far as I'm concerned.

Millenial who finally became a motorcycle owner here. I want to give my experience:
    1) rent demographics have changed massively. My town used to have houses for rent by owners. Now almost every apartment is a home turned duplex, owned by a property management firm with leases written by lawyers. EVERY apartment in my town with off street parking has a term in the lease specifying one vehicle on the property per unit, regardless of type, size, or how many you can fit in a space.
    2) I fully believed by Gen X parents who told me that they all had hundreds of friends who died in motorcycle accidents brutally. In the last year or so, I found out that almost every one of them was some 18 year old kid wearing shorts and a t-shirt who died at 100mph in a tree. Nobody wants to say that their reckless friend was 100% at fault for turning themself into beef stroganoff... but if they were honest with us, it wouldnt put us off so massively.
    3) Almost every biker I know is an overweight angry boomer with an entitlement complex and a bike that costs more than my car. That doesnt turn me off to bikes. But it makes it really hard to drive with somebody while you have a permit... and your average car driver has no idea that you can get your license by passing a motorcycle course.
    4) Almost every mechanic in 30 miles of my home are exclusively Harley mechanics. The two that arent will only work on metric bikes that are 15 or newer. None of them work on road bikes with carbs. You can find good deals on bikes, but you cant find mechanics to fix them.
    4) the reason you dont meet millenials who can even change their own brakes is because our parents taught us that if you do a repair and something goes wrong, you can be held liable. My family taught me to change a tire. They refused to show me how to do engine/brake repair. Most of us have started picking up a lot of skills out of necessity, but our generation was actively steered away from it... and by this point, so many of our parents are dead or due to age unable to get under a bike/car for hours anymore. We learn, and we ARE learning. But we arent really getting any of this from our parents.
I'm glad I got a bike. It's simple enough to repair, isnt computerized, and saves a ton of gas. With gas over $5 a gallon, I think you're going to be seeing a lot more bikers out there. Hell, when the boomers start kicking it en masse and flood the market with their overpriced status symbol bikes, you'll probably start to see more harley riders again, too!

I don't see too many bikes on the road here in the UK unless there's a bike night going on. I'm not rich but I saved my arse off last year to be able to afford my bike, I work a part time job which pays around £150 a week (decent money for part time employment I know), most of that money goes towards insurance and petrol. I had my dad help me get half the insurance payed off for this year but I've began saving to be able to pay him back and pay the insurance come next year. I don't think a lot of people my age manage their money too well and are more concerned on looking good and having flashy electronics, but hey-ho I'm the one over here with a bike laughing at them being picked up by their parents.

Yeah, the roads are sketchy and the gravel on some of those corners can make you cringe but again, the cultures there. I'm an old guy, I remember when we'd all work on our bikes at some broken down garage. OH, I have a couple of big V-Twins and a Yamaha R3 but my favorite bike to ride is my Yamaha SR400....Fun Bike.

The other thing is 80/90s if you rode a litre class bike you were the man but now with all the power modes, rider aids and tiny bikes anyone can ride a litre bike no sweat so it's lost it's badass image. I ride a 07 FZ1N and really can't think of a new bike I'd want to swap it for which is another point the new bikes are dull and too track focussed that doesn't help either

    The issues are:
Motorcycles are expensive. Speaking as an oldie we bought bikes because they were cheaper than cars. Now you can buy a small new car for the same price as a scooter.
Motorcycles are big. They suffered from inflation in weight and engine size. A 750 used to be a big bike, now it's a middleweight. People used to have fun on a 250 or a 400.
They killed 2-strokes. Strokers were cheap. A Yamaha LC350 could keep up with big bikes and allowed people to ride like a maniac.
Bikes have an image problem. In the 1970s bikes were ridden by fit young dudes. Now when the visor is flipped you'll see a retired person on a bike capable of TT racing.
Bikes used to be bikes. Big, Small. Now they've hybridised into a dozen niches in a bid to a capture a disappearing demographic.
For many, many years I was a 12 month a year biker. Sun, rain, snow it was all the same to me. 38 mile commute plus weekends. Now a motorcycle is a leisure item like a speedboat or a hang glider. Nobody takes their bike out in the rain, they get in the car.

Too true, its quite possible to get a serviceable Corolla for half the price of a decent 500cc to 650cc bike. For the cost of a new fat Harley you can get a second hand BMW M3! Also the difference in running costs, cars to bikes, are not so large as 30 years ago. Back in the 1970's i bought a near new Honda 750 K2 for $1,000. For that money back then in Australia cars were clunkers and unreliable. And these days young women are not so keen to jump pillion on a bike. So biking is more individualistic, whereas Millenials are more gregarious, cost/value conscious. My 26yo son thinks bikes are "old manny"...he drives an old Honda Civic and saves his money.

As part of the ‘forgotten generation’ (Gen X) I came into bikes in my 30s. I bought one, was hooked and it’s been 8 years of being on two wheels and obsessed with all things motorcycle. The industry has gotten thousands upon thousands of dollars of my income spent on the three bikes I currently own (been through others and will continue to go through new ones) and the gear I keep replacing because constant rain ages things quickly. X-/

Is buying a motorcycle really a bad financial decision? Going around town on my motorbike is quicker and cheaper than buying a public transport ticket, it is probably more than 10x cheaper than taking an uber. A bike (2012 Kawasaki er6n) I bought and then sold after 2 years costed me in depreciation exactly 50 dollars to own for two years (and I got to keep a carbon fiber helmet, a jacket and gloves I got free of charge with it) The maintenance included one set of tires and oild changes, insurance was 100dollars per year. If I was taking public transport it would have costed me more. Not even considering the other benefits, like no speeding tickets, parking wherever for free and lane splitting through traffic jams therefore always knowing when I am going to arrive and so on... Bikes make more sense than ever, I would say the real reason why there could be a decline in bike ownership is that bikes do not attract girls anymore and they are not as status elevating as they used to be.

Millennials make 20% less than the generation before across the board. Only owning a motorcycle as a mode of transportation is niche to put it lightly as are the skills and time to maintain one. So people that want a bike as a weekend or real nice day ride don't feel like they can afford it. Sports cars are also hit hard by this problem (probably more because they are super expensive)

I may get a motorcycle license, because bikes are way more economical than equally fast cars. The Hayabusa is, performance-wise, comparable to a... Mercedes Benz AMG GTR. If you floor it, the Hayabusa gets 12l/100km(21mpg) while the GTR uses 33l/100km(7 mpg). A 125ccm Honda Dirtbike gets 1,5l/100km. That's 156.89 MPG! Top speed is like, 100-110km/h maybe(60-65mph), so... you really can't complain. On the other hand, I'm a car enthusiast through and through.

Harley's problem is simple. It's their cult following. Those in this "cult" from Harley, more than often times will scoff and degrade anyone on a bike that isn't a Harley.Plus the older generation does this as well when you are riding small and less expensive Harley. Anyone on a Yamaha is below them. Anyone on a Honda is below them, any one on a Kawasaki... you get the point. It's a combination of the cult following and the asking price of the bike itself. They are for the most part, the American face of motorcycles. And the American face of a motorcycle rider, is a big burly bearded man in his 40-50's with a leather vest, and half helmet. Millennials, for the most part, are none of those things.

I ride a Yamaha R6 and I’ve been given plenty of shit in the single year I’ve been riding by Harley owners. One of our great family friends is a die har Harley fan, and he does it too. He’s happy to see me on Two Wheels, but still gives me shit that it’s not a “real bike” and my ex coworker does the same thing. He’s only 3 years older than me, but my R6 isn’t a “man’s bike”. I don’t get it. The only thing a Harley has on my R6 is comfort. Oh and bigger displacement... but less speed. I do want a Harley. But just because I want to have one of all the major brands. I don’t know why they have an issue with non Harley’s but some of them do.

I went through my big displacement BMW phase ten years ago and am very happy with my 700 cc adventure style bike because i don’t feel the need to ride fast anymore. If you look at the history of motorcycle riding in general, it didn’t really take off until the small engine affordable Honda’s started selling in the late 60’s. Harley’s success is mostly attributable to the Baby Boomers and we know most of their lives are on the downhill now. I am OK with all of that. It will allow the mystique of riding to continue.

Yeah i really dont get all this get new everything mentality. I just bought bike, even though its just 50cc it sure rides nicely. Engine was blown and i didnt know how to fix it, so i asked around and my neighbor had experience on fixing them. Now i have spent 320€ total to that bike and its ready for road. I'm probably going to swap it to something bigger eventually. Only truly limiting factor is that motorcycle license around here is 700€, witch sure i can manage over time and allows me to drive anything with two wheels regardless of displacement, but its bit big sum for now.
Even if i had money i would never go get new fancy bike. Everything that is already used just shows what are the weak points of that thing. Its something that owners before have tested and paid. When i get my hands on it, i just make reinforced part my self and keep on using it, with fraction of the cost and price being low, i can just modify and customize it with out huge monetary loss if i end up selling it later.
For style of bike, dirt bike is probably most usable for me as living in countryside. After that half sit street bike would be next option, followed by cruiser for medium driving distances. Long distance bikes like harleys really do not suit at me. Any longer distance i much rather take car, as even if there comes a problem with it, its still some what safe place to sleep and protects from elements.
