  • Adding a 5hp HEPA cyclone Oneida Dust Gorilla Pro in my garage. Actually, I added the Gorilla to my shed and ran ducting to my shop from there. I give a comparison to my old Laguna dust collector and show the before and after results of this huge upgrade. My wife and my lungs want to give a big thanks to Oneida for providing this unit. My garage has never been cleaner and my lungs have never been safer.

The Onieda is removing a tremendous amount of air from your shop. Are you returning it to the shop from the shed? If not, your shop is in serious negative pressure when the collector is on. You will want to think through where the air is going to come from; you don't want it to be drawing from an area that has a gas fired appliance.

So I have a cracked window to keep myself from dying. Got that tip from someone on Instagram. Also added a carbon dioxide (monoxide?) detector. It will suck the cold and warm air out though.I don’t run it all day,, usually short bursts. If it becomes a problem I’ll get a return set up though. Good points!

I would agree with you if his shop was an otherwise sealed vessel. I imagine the garage doors are not particularly tight. I would like to see some data but I doubt there is more than 0.125 psi difference in shop pressure with the vacuum running and ambient outside pressure. It’s an interesting theoretical issue but not an actual problem. A simple vent in the garage door would solve that 1/8 pound issue....if it is an issue.

My dust collector by far makes my life the easiest. I have hand-me-down cyclone similar to the Oneida (but not as good) from Penn State Industries (they don't make them anymore). It came from my dad's shop. He accidentally dropped the impeller and motor while trying to get the motor off to replace the bearings. He had it loaded in the back of his car ready to take it to the dump when I saw it and claimed it. I hammered out all the dents, took the motor to a motor-repair guy and it worked for another year before the motor burned out. So I called Penn State Industries and they happened to have one last motor on their parts shelf. It's been working great ever since. And Cam, you're inspiring me to start a woodworking YT channel too. I'm going to try to post my first video by Christmas. I have really enjoyed your work - while perhaps not the most 'technical', it's very beautiful.

UA-cam. I wouldn't know how to do 75% of the stuff I do without instructional videos. I installed a heat pump water heater a year or so back. It was about 300 pounds. I used rope + climbing pulleys to get it up high enough while my dad maneuvered it into place. I couldn't have imagined trying to do it without that mechanical advantage.

Fav tool: AEG 58V leaf blower.
Regarding the motor install, If it had been me I'd have gone doorknocking with my neighbours until I found a big man. "Excuse me mate, I'm from across the street. I've got a new piece of machinery for my shed and it's a two man job and I need someone's help for about 15 seconds of lifting. I hate to ask but I'll buy you a (insert generic gift, bottle of wine? Six pack? Block of chocolate?) if you help?" It's that easy. Don't be afraid of your neighbours, you never know how helpful they might be!

Pocket Knife - Hey Cam, I just ordered a 2 HP Harvey C200-30. The delivery truck dropped it off at the end of my driveway. For most people, that's probably not too big a deal, but my driveway is over 200 yards long. I used what I had on hand, my furniture dolly and ratchet straps, to move this 470 box alone. It took all of my nearly 200 lbs. pulling as hard as I could to tip the box so I could move it. When I did, it build way more momentum than I was expecting or had ever experienced. The dolly handle basically buried itself in my pelvis and just crushed me to the ground. I was lucky as hell I didn't blow an ACL and was just barely able to stand it back up. I did slightly pull a quad doing that (I don't do heavy super deep squats any more), but I managed just barely to get it up. The rest of the 200 yard trip went without incident, but if you want a good don't do it this way story, that's my most recently one :)

My favourite tool is my leatherman multi tool. Lives on my hip at work and hardly a day goes bye without it coming out. Miss it at the weekend will need to add it to my weekend hear. Love how it all came together for you. My new shed is flat packed on my driveway waiting on a dry period so that the earthworks can be done in my backyard. Five weeks later. Rain rain rain. Being Australia and after having the worst ever bushfire season, my mind is a quagmire of hoping for a dry spell but enjoying the unusual rain.

Best tool for me has been my $5 husky folding box cutter. I have more knives than I can count but that impulse buy three years ago has become my EDC. I appreciate seeing IRL struggles doing things by yourself. It can seem like I’m the only one. I had a bear of a time moving around a floor scrapper that I rented to tear out the old flooring in my house. I didn’t think much of it but should have asked more questions when they had two large men load it into my Subaru. That was fun to get out on my own. Even more fun getting it back in for the return trip. Thankfully all fingers and toes made it unscathed.

One way up and down. 28” wide staircase, that had a door perpendicular to the direction of the stairs. It’s a Hammer A3-31, weighs about 700lbs. Rented a 1200lb escalera piano hauler that barely fit through the door. Took about 6 hours and 3 guys in some VERY precarious situations to finally get it up and out.

Smart phones really make life easier nowadays. Having a powerful suction unit is key to staying healthy. I work in a dental laboratory. I do model work which involves using vertical sanding belt trimmers, lathes and hand pieces. It kicks up a lot of dust from the dental casts. Thankfully our suction unit are huge and incredibly powerful. Really saves my lungs and is more important than you know.

I have the beginnings of a shop with the table saw, jointer, band saw, new 13" planer (arrived two days ago - zero use yet), drill press etc. Currently have a small cyclone dust collection attached to my shop vac. I loved your "Don't do this' beginning, because as I said, I am a one man shop (and 73 years old). Although I would love the set up you have, I am not to that point in my wood working, and will probably start with the mini gorilla set up. In 2005 we moved into a new home and the first thing I purchased was a DeWalt power drill. My husband laughed and asked me why I needed it. I used it so much, I’m into home DIY. My husband found it came in very handy for him too. He stopped giving me a hard time. I still use it. I’m in the process of upgrading my craft room.
I have always loved woodworking but I have to admit the power saws scare me. I am able to do woodworking by building a doll house. Much easier to handle. Great video.

Congrats on Oneida and their generosity to improve your health and woodshop! You are now Mr Liquid Glass and Oneida Jr. Please follow up when you get the auto-gates, and here's a tip: you could have laid the vac down, bolted the motor on, then stood it up. Plus you need to re-arrange those shed shelves because, well, how will your reach the garden food? I know, build a cleat-wall between the vac and aircomp, or, get another shed with the money saved by Oneida! Oh another suggestion: Paint the metal ducts black, to go with BlackTail :)

I really need to get a good dust collection system in place. I'm drowning in dust all the time and that's not good. Also can't afford it, so maybe I should contact Oneida too! Anyway, the tool that I appreciate the most is an odd small one - it is a spring punch nail set. It's so handy I can't imagine not having one now. And the crazy thing I did that I probably shouldn't have done, but it worked out in the end, was lifting a file cabinet onto a 5 foot platform by myself. I made the platform so I could use more vertical space in my garage office, but then when I needed to get it up there it was late at night and I was by myself. I couldn't move on to the next thing I had to do until it was up there, so I struggled and fought to get it up there for about half an hour and finally got it up there. It almost crushed me several times, but in the end it worked out. :-) Thanks for the vid

I pretty much am a hand tool woodworker with vintage saws, planes, chisels, etc. I do use a router occasionally as well as a jigsaw and drill press. Even though I don't generate a lot of power generated dust, it is enough to affect my breathing and I am ever more aware of the need for a dust collection system even though on a much smaller scale.
Perhaps the most time saving tool I currently use is my trim router mounted on a clamp on table that I built for doing dados and edge treatments. Believe me, hand creating dados is a little more time consuming than I normally choose to endure.
Thanks for sharing your dust project, believe it or not, I did amass quite a bit of useful information. Cheers and enjoy your shop, it is really a nice setup.

Very nice video. The only downside of having the collector in the shed is that you are sucking cooled or heated shop air out of the shop. If you could add ducting to put the filter stack inside the shop, you would then be returning the same temperature air back into your shop.

That was crazy putting that motor on like that. You have wood joists right above you to use, even if you just supported it from the joist incase it fell. The ladder like that is a good way to go ladder surfing, been there done that. That vac system is awesome for sure

Clamps all types and sizes!!! Also feel your pain on not having people to help with heavy lifting. Needed to put a drill press up on a stand and ended up using a winch attached to rafters.

Best tool is a old Braddle. So many uses apart from making pre pilot holes. It’s a pick, a hole alignment tool, a scrapper of difficult old paint and varnish finishes, a small pot opener, an expoxy small surface filling tool, a ruler (I know how long the blade is from point to handle, a hole maker for leather stitching and so many more. I keep it clean and sharp. It’s only small and I constantly forget where I last put it down!

Watching you put that fan on top of the collector was akin to watching Jaws the first time!

Drum sander simply because it is the newest tool in our shop. Since you can get tear out easily with planers, the drum sander saves a bunch of time and energy. We are still using a shop vac-based dust collection with a Wen air filter in the ceiling. Cool system, Cam. Congrats.

Honestly for the main most useful tool I've ever used for any of my crafts: Awls! I use awls for marking measurements, poking holes, putting tiiiiny details on stuff, sizing holes in leather to the proper size, all sorts of stuff! To the point I'm thinking about making a dedicated storage thing for my awls once my shop is finally set up. Most useful one is an old one my late grandpa made, papa always made tools when he didn't have something on hand. He ended up grinding down a VERY old Craftsman phillips screwdriver into a smooth point, and even as I type this it's sitting next to me. I feel these are very underrated tools lol

I have always been very interested in woodworking and being an engineer it's hard not to get consumed by these awesome crafts. Enjoyed your video.

My Sawstop 3hp Professional Cabinet saw is my always-go-to tool. Dude, please promise to ground the actual ducting. Dust builds up a tremendous static charge (think static discharge wicks on airplanes). I watched a very informative (Steve Johnson) UA-cam video on dust collection. Best advise: use unshielded braided copper wire and wrap the ducts from every blast gate all the way to the collector. I used self-tapping metal screws that had a built-in rubber washer that sealed the penetration. The screws actually penetrate the ducting into the airstream where all that dust is creating mischief. Wherever you have an duct intersection I used wire connectors to splice the different “circuits.” Good luck!

    Cam,
My go to tool is a screwdriver that has 2 straight and 2 Phillips drivers. I’m ver impressed with your instillation of the dust filter. Today I mounted an 8 ft. LED light on my garage ceiling that is 14 feet off the ground....solo. I spent a lot of time climbing down and finding stuff I dropped! Fun.

Great video, looking forward to the detailed ducting video. I would say my shop apron with pouches and my french cleat wall help me out a lot! Having a specific place to put tools when I'm done, or when my wife/daughter borrow a tool, so I know where it is the next time I need it. I purchased a couple small tools because I just could not find the one I knew I owned, only to find the original a month or two later! lol

My favorite tool to make life easier in the garage is my leaf blower. I'm in a small space and dust collection is a simple shopvac with filter so small dust everywhere. Leaf blower helps get things cleaned out a bit. Maybe next time rig up a small pully in the rafter and just pull it up. Easy to do and a strong pully can be easily attached and unattached anywhere. Especially when you are moving some of those big slabs. Congrats on the new toy! She looks powerful!
