Don't forget level 2.5 - the leaf blower! Just start that thing up and clean your whole shop. It's also good for cleaning off your tools, walls, and any other hard-to-reach areas. Just make sure your wife's car isn't right outside your shop. Or else you'll need to clean that too. 🙂

I have the same problem. I built a table for my table saw, and also installed a Krieg router lift. Dust is everywhere. I don’t have a good system for dust collection. I’m using a vacuum cleaner. I will build a dust box. Thanks for sharing! Enjoyed the humor!

Been doing woodwork stuff for almost 3 months -- so far my dust collection has consisted of opening the garage door and pointing the table saw & miter saw exhausts outward. Then using the leaf blower to push the rest out. Yeah, definitely a beginner.

When I started over a year ago I got myself a makita VC3011L shopvac. It turn on with my tools and is a decent machine overall. It's basicly the functionality you had of level 7 just a smaller diameter hose.
Well presented. I have gotten up to Level 6 when I get to work indoors, otherwise the driveway is my main workspace in (relatively) warm weather in MA. Working on repurposing my 2 car garage into a workshop, pending time and funds!

Thank you for the great video! I saw a quick connect on your vacuum port at the 2:15 mark. Do you have a link or recommendation on that setup? Looking to hook up multiple tools for my workbench and this looks like a pretty good option.
Right now, I have my planer against a wall, with a 2" pvc pipe angled up along the ceiling into a pillow case. I also have a box fan blowing everything out the garage door (I run it with garage open), but not that it's like 20-40f outside all the time, not so much. I just discovered a door in my garage ceiling that has a ton of space up there, so I'm looking at putting my dust collection up there and running hoses and what not up there.
Drill a hole in the bottom of shop vac and mount it on top of the separator. Makes smaller footprint and eliminates extra hose.
Shop vac filter suggestion... buy a box of women's knee high nylon stockings, and put one over the filter. Very simple to clean and/or replace, and, very inexpensive.

Cyclone with 2.5" hoses both sides to my vac with vac bag and nicer filter.

Another suggestion: open the garage door and use a leaf blower. Cleanup of every surface in a jiffy!
In order to capture the fine dust consider adding a canister filter to the dust collector or duct the exhaust outside. Those bags allow a lot of fine dust to be shot back into the shop.
Yep I am doing a Reno inside for first not by choice by necessity it's horrific when it comes to any thought of convenience of my good Ole days of yesteryear having a garage/separate workspace 🤦🏻♀️
I have a rigid and put a 30ft dryer flex hose on the exhaust plus made my own filter inside for now... Plus EVERYDAY AFTER I am done my work shift lol (it's my home lol) I go into overtime 🎶🎶🎶🎤working on the night shift as a homemade janitor cleaning the current worksite only to make new mess next day shift 😝😋💃💃💃 do what I must with where I am at in the moment
I'm level 0 work outside and let the wind deal with it. I don't do much wood working
Also, at level 6 I did 2 vac's as this was far cheaper than a ducting system.
Great Shop Vac at decent price
Ugh, okay well I finally invested in dust separation (Duststopper) and (I have a nicer cyclone for when I have the time to set it up) for my Ridgid shop vac and when attached and running the power is significantly weaker than I expected. In fact I’ve watched hundreds probably by now of different shopvac + dust separation videos and builds and theirs always seem to have powerful suction whereas mine is pathetic. One thing I’ve noticed is more ppl using actual pvc pipes for their connections plus building a cart to shorten the length of travel for the air and maybe that’s the key to getting some efficiency back? I’m sure I need to replace the filter in my Ridgid but just surprised it’s lacking to the degree it is. I still prefer it to opening the shop vac up and removing the filter etc. just to empty it
I was hoping this video gave me direction in what I should step up too in my have garage shot. But I didn’t help at all. I have a home made cyclone collector that is not keeping up with my work load and need ideas on my next step. This video didn’t give me that. I’m not being ugly with my comment just giving you my situation and how your videos could help for some of us. Bottom line is I need a better system and I was hoping this video would give me directions. I did not. Still love ya man.

I think I’m somewhere between levels 6 and 8. I have a dust collector with a DIY Thein baffle separator before it. I do have hoses ran with blast gates at my tools which are pretty much stationary, but I still have to use the broom and dust pan at times.
That sounds like a neat setup!
@@SpencleyDesignCo I plan to make a video about it soon. I did a video about the initial setup, but have recently changed it a bit and trying to improve it as much as possible.

Where do you find adapters I have a new Makita SP600J track saw and I cannot find an adapter for that to my 2" hose on my shopvac.
The dust bag in the shop vac is huge. Clean up and better suction. Filters are expensive. It's definitely the minimum in my opinion.
After ruining a filter in about a week, I adopted the shop vac bags very quickly!
Good video! I am on level 6, but would like to move into level 7 sooner than later. I always forget to check the bucket and before I know it, it’s shooting out from the lid! Any idea how to reduce or eliminate the static build up? Go Pens!
Thanks for checking out the video and for your support! I’ve heard that some folks will attach a ground wire to the cyclone, and then have a heavy bolt that touches the ground to help dissipate the static charge. I’ve never tried it though

I just spend a bunch of money stepping up my game on dust collection but I still may need to get a dust deputy. I fill up dust extractor bags too fast. I find the WEN air filtration systems are pretty helpful for airborne dust.
The cyclones are certainly pretty handy, but the extra space is kinda frustrating when you’re in a small garage
@@SpencleyDesignCo Ya, the air filtration unit and the Dewalt dust extractor do a decent job.
I’ve seen some folks come up with pretty creative solutions for miter saws! Kinda like a giant dome around the saw
@@SpencleyDesignCo I'd totally build one of those if my shop was permanent. When I'm done building something, I have to put everything away and pull my car back in. Everything needs to be portable and storable.

Will a 2hp dust collector blow 10 meters?
Couldn't a pillow case, plastic milk jug or some other common item be secured to the circular saw tube attachment to collect dust blown out?

I run a peak 6hp craftsman with a dust deputy and filter bag. It even pulls enough vacuum to run my DW735 planer. I have ducting running along the back side of my work bench with blast gates to each machine. Works great but now I need another work bench.

Hello, I was hoping someone could help me with an issue I'm having with my 4inch dust collector. Is anyone available?
Why don't YOU tell me what level I'm at: I've been arguing with my wife to make her stop sweeping my shop, while the shop vac I had bought a couple years ago was doing household work. Now since I'm redecorating the shop I got a nice Bosch vac and planning a separator for it, so I guess whatever level that will end up being, it'll be light years apart from what it used to be!

How does your dust collection fair with your power situation? I'm also working in a garage with a single 15a circuit and when I turn my table saw on, the lights dim :)
I have the exact same issue haha
Ad a separate circuit with 12-2 romex and a 20a breaker. It's not very hard to do. Plenty of good YT videos on it.
