It’s funny because I think the opposite I think there overrated I’m not a big fun of using them by there self it’s just so much coloring but I get why people like to use them
I wasn't a fan of colored pencils till I recognized how beautifully they work with watercolor. They really are made for each other. These days my struggle is finding the time to set up my area for watercolor. With a needy cat, that's a feat in my house. Because of this, I'm looking at trying alcohol markers instead of watercolors for color blocking. These vids have come in super handy for that technique!
I resonate with your shadow coloring choices because the one thing I have learned from a year's worth of color study is that generally (not always) warm light= cool shadow and vice versa. Most importantly when creating a piece use a reference image with shadows (not artwork). You will find that a piece always has both I REPEAT BOTH cool and warm shadows. Understand your reference and apply it on your own work. You will figure out how to use both tones for a drawing that has a single light either warm or cool.
Wow, she turned out sooo beautiful! I love how you used colored pencils, without burnishing or using solvents like a lot of people do. Totally makes me want to grab my colored pencils again and use them without using markers as a base first :D
this turned out so soft and lovely! also, i have sold flowers during holiday season, so poinsettias are kind of my plant nemesis XD i know so many absolutely useless facts about them. i have a degree in gardening and my school was like locally famous for growing their own poinsettias. there were so many. SO MANY. i did not know there were so many different kinds nor did i realise how obnoxious elderly people can be about their christmas flowers XD
Sort of random, but I've noticed that you've started saying "When I used to work in retail". Does this mean that you're a 100% self-employed artist now? (If so) then yay!! Your art is beautiful and such an inspiration and I'm glad that you can fully dedicate your work hours to doing something you love!
Yes!! I quit my retail job at the end of August of this year - I've only properly announced it on my Patreon in fear of jinxing it lol! Thank you so so much!
Yup retail worker here. You never get to enjoy holidays. The minute (literally overnight) after Christmas ends we have to go in to set up the next season. So glad you are able to create art full time Tina!
after watching you for months, it gave me the courage to pursue art! ur style is pretty 😍 im not that strong in traditional, but you motivate me to keep trying!!
I just quit my retail job of five years to open my own small business selling art and stationery. This is the first time in five years I get to go home for the holidays due to being contracted to work on Christmas Day! I’m so looking forward to it.
I love the artwork. And I grew up with both my parents working retail (and I did for a few years too) so I TOTALLY feel you on just being bleh about the Holiday season.
Fantastic, her expression is subtle but very... expressive. I get a sense of sadness from her. or perhaps it's just me experiencing the kuleshov effect
Very beautiful illustration! She looks like she can be a fairy of poinsettias. Colored pencil is also one of my favorite mediums along with gouache. The best-colored pencils to use are Prismacolor and Faber-Castell. I have a lot of favorite Christmas movies. I really love The Nightmare Before Christmas, Home Alone, Elf, The Polar Express, Grandma Got Ran Over By A Reindeer, along with Klaus. It's such an amazing movie. There's another movie I watched two years ago with my family called The Christmas Chronicles. It's another Netflix original movie that is also really good.
Wow, this is a beautiful illustration and I loved watching your process! I love the texture that you left in this piece. Whenever I use colored pencil I find myself trying to force the perfect smooth finish, and erase the grain of the paper out of existence with a blending pencil.
Wow thank you for this! I want to use a different type of color palette on my drawing but you still helped a lot! I'm not so worried about color placement now that I know it'll take many layers!
Its a wonderful life is such a old classic feel good film. I recommend watching it in black and white. Old films aren't everyones cup of tea but I adore James Stuart so it a win win for me.
I’m just starting out on UA-cam and I’ve been trying to get back into color pencils. I often find myself frustrated as I’m used to watercolor and link but you’ve inspired me to keep going. Keep up the good work, you’re so talented!
This is so pretty, I’m really bad in color pencils but I loved to se your way of doing it, and by the way I had so much fun in yesterday Instagram live 💜
This is so cool and so helpful! I like working with watercolor and pencils so these tips were really nice to refresh my self ! Thank u so much and wow I’m early! Awesome!
My favourite Christmas movies are probably the old stop-motion animated classics and the more modern The Christmas Chronicles. I'm sure there are a few others that I can't think of. I'm not a Grinch and have never worked in retail, but I'm also not a Christmas lover. I used to be until my first major depressive episodr happened at Christmas almost a decade ago and ruined the season for me. It's just a very stressful season and has some painful memories associated with it, so I both enjoy it and dread it.
Ohh I do have a soft spot for the stop motion Rudolf the Red-nose Reindeer with the island of misfit toys - I watched that a lot growing up Sending you lots of positivity this holiday season!
I absolutely looooove Christmas! I look forward to it all year, and sometimes listen to Christmas music in the summer (when I’m miserable from the heat.) My favorite Christmas movies are Elf, It’s a Wonderful Life, A Christmas Story, The Santa Clause, and Olive The Other Reindeer (voiced by Drew Barrymore!)
I hear ya on the bit about the Christmastime retail grind. IMHO, people are even meaner during the holidays. The amount of them using the holidays just to demand unreasonable things and be hateful about it in the process doubles. Best Christmas movies: Home Alone 1&2, A Peanuts Christmas, The Bishop's Wife, It's a Wonderful Life.
I totally agree!! It's really unfortunate that the retail workers are the ones who end up having to deal with people's frustrations :( Oooh how could I forget A Peanuts Christmas!!
i dont use coloured pencils, i prefer watercolour and gouache, but i love the look of art made with coloured pencils because the texture is so unique and cool!! they have a certain look to them that other mediums dont have and its so cool!
I know what you mean about the stress of retail during the holidays because I used to work at e.l.f makeup store during Black Friday and it was just crazy. On the other hand my favorite holiday movie is Die Hard as well. And I did enjoy the Netflix movie the Holiday Calendar that came out in 2019.
Oh my goodness, working Black Friday must've been horrible!! Yesss, Die Hard forever!! I haven't heard of Holiday Calendar, I'll have to keep and eye out for it
very striking eyes and wonderful colours ah yes working retail has turned me into a grinch this time of year. ugh and working at fast food places was worse than working at a store, people get hangry and throw things (burgers, shakes, etc) coloured pencils are def so tedious, worth it in the end but your hands can def get sore/tired using them, especially if its a big piece
Oh nooo that's horrible!! I used to work at a fast food place when I was a teenager and the treatment there was definitely worse than retail for sure Thanks so much though I'm glad you like the piece!
This print made me subscribe to the Patreon print club! The white hair definitely looks lovely with the poinsettias (I'm biased though as it's my natural hair colour and Christmas is my favourite time of year)! EDIT: Favourite Christmas movie is White Christmas. It may not convince you to love Christmas, but it's classic and elegant and funny, and just the right amount of festive-ness. Even as someone who also worked retail for five years, somehow it didn't crush my soul entirely when it came to the holidays (though I hated it every other time of year)
Ahh thank you so so much for joining my Patreon page!! Omg I'm so glad you were able to maintain your festive spirit - now that's a Christmas miracle haha!
She looks lovely! I think the white hair was a perfect choice. My family always watches home alone 1-3 and my favorite Christmas movie is Elf with Will Ferrell :)
omg i totally relate. i worked on a returns desk for a huge retail chain for 3 years, and retail/food p much every other year of my working life (13 years). i abhor christmas carols haha. and my family is fairly dysfunctional, i always feel like i'm pulled to a thousand pieces to get to all the family members on one day and it's just stressful rather than nice family time. most people get seasonal depressionduring winter apparently but for me it happens during summer rather than winter (i'm australian, so christmas = summer) and i think it's p much entirely to do with the holiday season. this piece is beautiful though, i love to see and to try and create pieces that just barely hint at christmas without being outwardly garish, and this ticks all of those subtle boxes. i think it's a nice way to sort of remember a memory of a time before retail when christmas was actually magical and exciting. oof i rambled, sorry! haha.
Oooof working a returns desk must've been especially awful, it's like people are ready to fight!! Also I totally agree with you that a lot of the times Christmas can be so stressful rather than relaxing, the irony! I'm so glad you like the piece
this is so gorgeous! I ADORE Klaus. Some of my other faves are the 1970 musical Scrooge with Albert Finney and Muppet's Christmas Carol. You saying that you're the grinch makes me think of a little art trend I've seen on IG of people making grinchsonas haha it is so much fun! The first person I saw do it was @petalromance but I'm not sure if they are the one who came up with the concept BUT if you did want to do another holidayish video, that might be fun!
Thank youu! Oh my god I haven't seen Muppet's Christmas Carol in ages, that will definitely have to go on the list! WHAT, I did not know Grinchsonas was a trend right now, this sounds absolutely fantastic - I will definitely look this up!!
I’ve been watching your Instagram stories waiting for this video because I wanted to do a coloured pencil illustration and needed some inspiration so I thought I’d wait for ur video, and it finally here!
Girl, I know how you feel. My family planned a trip to see my great aunt and uncle right after Christmas while I still worked in retail. I requested off over a month before and my boss chewed me out because apparently I asked off during SAS week (which we were not allowed to know when it was until after Christmas) and surprise surprise, my request off was thoroughly denied. And little did I know, the next time I saw my great uncle was going to be my last. I really should have quit then. I have been a bit of a grinch for several years now, but after losing him, it became more of a indifference/lack of “Christmas Spirit.” I could never go back to retail because I hate the public lol
So sorry that happened to you, that's horrible! It's so frustrating how companies treat their workers that way. Glad you're out of the retail environment now! Sending you lots of positivity your way!
She’s gorgeous..I love the colours you chose to use on this piece..Although they are Pointsettias there is no reason you need to put the image away afterwards..it’s a really nicely done piece 🥰
I’m a rare bird who worked at a craft store during the holiday season and still loves Christmas. My mom used to joke that I’d come home looking like a disco ball at the end of the day leading up to Christmas because of ALL.THE.GLITTER. I love How the Grinch Stole Christmas”. There’s the animated original and the Jim Carrey version which is a guilty pleasure film because I know how bad it is but I still laugh every time. I also love Rudolph the Red nosed Reindeer narrated by Burl Ives. There’s also an old 1948 animated edition that can be found here on UA-cam.
Omg and I bet you were seeing that glitter on all your clothes well into the next year haha! I'm so happy that you're still able to enjoy Christmas despite having worked retail! Christmas miracle! Oh I love the cheesiness of the Jim Carrey version too - it's so wacky and entertaining!
Grinches Unite, between retail work (once in a store that was closing and doing christmas stuff, would not recommend) and complicated family stuff i usually just want to listen to sad songs and pretend like nothings happening. i like the lights though and all the sephora gift sets though.... i like christmas when i work on the day or get adopted into friends families more than "traditional" christmases.
My queeeen!Sorry I wasn't able to watch your recent videooos~🥺 Like always everything you do is so stunning and I really adore your techniques!I hope you always stay saafe, love 🇵🇭
I have been practicing with toned paper and still cannot get the saturation I want. But I think it has to do with the paper being too smooth from the get go..any paper brand preference for drawing?
Also lost hype for the holidays and hate Christmas music due to working in retail. Best Christmas movie of all time is The Muppets Christmas Carol. Hands down
It's been a hot minute since I've seen anyone really use Colored Pencils for anything but hyper realism, so I thoroughly enjoyed watching this, but I tend to agree...there's something about Colored Pencils that can really feel "extra" tedious in the process, it might be that layers often feel even more transparent because of the grain, but it's definitely something that hits me too. Overall, loved watching, and I feel you...I worked Retail for many many many years, and it's absolutely awful. I'm not an Xmas person, and never will be.
It's certainly not a medium for everyone haha! It's takes so long to see any real colour pay off I think so maybe that's what discourages people from sticking with it Ahh, I'm glad we can relate that way! I heard xmas music at the grocery store the other day and I just shuddered hahaha
@@imawonder i feel you, I just loathe hearing that cheery syrupy music in a store, it just trigger Black Friday or XMAS Eve Rush flashbacks Yes, it takes so long...I thought about returning to it, but using watercolor washes as a "flat layer" first
lmao i fucking relate so bad on your experience with working in retail. I have to work this Christmas, which I don't really mind ever since losing my religion but Halloween? sign me up lol. I love the texture of the paper with the colored pencil. as always, your art and video is beautiful😍
'If you've worked retail before, you know what I'm talking about' - Oh boy, our store has it's own playlist each month, but let me tell you, the Marketplace is absurdly loud, so listening to 'Holly Jolly Christmas' in the store and hearing 'FIVE, GOOOLD RIIIIIIINGS' at an insane volume coming from the door, it's easy to a) get so annoyed at Christmas Carols b) Get a headache from double music whammy. My sympathies to all other retail employees.
Oh my goodness, I feel for you on that!! I used to work at a clothing retail store and it was mandatory for the music to be at a very loud volume so that it would "entice customers to come in" it was horrible!
Here before a million viewss!! Like if you joined the premiere! And can you pls do a review on the Derwent colour pencils cus I'm getting thm for Christmas pls pls✨❤️
colored pencils are such an underrated medium! i'm sad not many use them, and i'm really glad you recognize their potential. =)
They were my first love! So there's something very comforting about using them :)
It’s funny because I think the opposite I think there overrated I’m not a big fun of using them by there self it’s just so much coloring but I get why people like to use them
I find coloured pencil SO HARD

I love the scratchy texture! Not a lot of artists do that anymore, very bold! 💕💕
"...you're subjected to listening to the same 10 christmas songs in every version imaginable..." had me cracking. 😂
I felt that statement.
Lol!! I remember one year we thought about making Christmas song bingo cards to try and find some solace haha!
this is gorgeous! I'm a (mainly) watercolor + colored pencil artist myself so these tips are really so useful! thank you for this video 💚
Glad it was helpful!
Wow, she turned out sooo beautiful! I love how you used colored pencils, without burnishing or using solvents like a lot of people do.

Omg i was just thinking about getting rid of my colored pencils because I had them for 16 years and I don’t use them as often as I used to.
Amazing I love it so much ❤❤❤❤🥰🥰🥰
Thank you!
Love it 🔥
Also lost hype for the holidays and hate Christmas music due to working in retail.
Best Christmas movie of all time is The Muppets Christmas Carol. Hands down
Glad I'm not the only one!
Yes! That's been suggested a lot, I gotta add it to my list!
I love your videos😊❤
Thank you!
Very Beautiful 💖
Thank you so much 😊
It's been a hot minute since I've seen anyone really use Colored Pencils for anything but hyper realism, so I thoroughly enjoyed watching this, but I tend to agree...there's something about Colored Pencils that can really feel "extra" tedious in the process, it might be that layers often feel even more transparent because of the grain, but it's definitely something that hits me too.
Overall, loved watching, and I feel you...I worked Retail for many many many years, and it's absolutely awful. I'm not an Xmas person, and never will be.
It's certainly not a medium for everyone haha! It's takes so long to see any real colour pay off I think so maybe that's what discourages people from sticking with it
Ahh, I'm glad we can relate that way! I heard xmas music at the grocery store the other day and I just shuddered hahaha
@@imawonder i feel you, I just loathe hearing that cheery syrupy music in a store, it just trigger Black Friday or XMAS Eve Rush flashbacks
Yes, it takes so long...I thought about returning to it, but using watercolor washes as a "flat layer" first
lmao i fucking relate so bad on your experience with working in retail. I have to work this Christmas, which I don't really mind ever since losing my religion but Halloween? sign me up lol. I love the texture of the paper with the colored pencil. as always, your art and video is beautiful😍
I love it 😻 تجنن
I wish you would draw more with only crayons 💗💕
she reminds me of tim burton’s emily!
This hand earrings are a reference to Frida Kahlo?
Here before a million viewss!!
Like if you joined the premiere!
And can you pls do a review on the Derwent colour pencils cus I'm getting thm for Christmas pls pls✨❤️
Thanks for joining the premiere! Unfortunately I don't have Derwent pencils but I've heard good things, I'm sure they'll be lovely to work with :)
What animal did you sacrifice to create such a masterpiece?
-Alex Hirsch
Lol! no animals were harmed in the creation of this artwork!
woahh
Lol, I consider Donnie Darko an Easter movie because it has a bunny in it. 😂 So I’m not judging.
Hahahaha perfect!
😊💕
