For anyone wondering, the screw inside the chuck is a T20 torx head. I didn't have one so I used a 5mm allen wrench to loosen, worked fine for me. I had to wack the bigger allen wrench several times with a hammer while tightened in the chuck to get the chuck to come loose from the spindle. But it will come loose with some persistence.
Also note the DCD777 model I have (serial# 079659) has neither allen, Phillips, slot, nor Torx fitting. There is a proprietary method for attaching the chuck creating planned obsolescence so you need to either find another method to remove the screw or buy a whole dang new drill/driver. Thanks Dewalt.
There is a T20 inside the chuck on my dcd778 , once the Loctite cracked the screw came out. That is where this fix stopped. The allen key next step doesn't work short of beating the drill to pieces. Replacement will be Milwaukee not Dewalt.
Thanks for the video. I tried this and the first step went okay, but the second step didn't work at all. It felt like it might be damaging the gears, so I just ordered the newest XR model, problem solved! 😆
My chuck works (I think as it opens and closes) the drill won't drill it is like the ”clutch” is stripped. Any thoughts before I open it up? Thanks for the video. Excellent
Great video, everything comes apart without trouble but sometimes the left hand threaded retaining screw won’t budge what do you do? Dewalt have a lock tight coating on that screw which binds it solid. I found slightly tighten it first then undue then tighten and then undue each tine it moved a little this breaks up the lock tight mixture which crumbles off. After it moves a little WD40 helps to get it out. The head of the socket screw is a torx 20 T20 make sure you use a high tensile one or it will bust off in the socket. The Chuck is a standard right hand thread 1/2 20 unified thread never grip the chuck externally with grips. Only use a large Allan wrench in the Chuck and give it a strike with a rubber or hard faced plastic hammer. When replacing with new one of old one back hand tight only with the Chuck. The retaining screw should be a new one or re apply a lock tight. Clean out thread first with solvent.
This is the good stuff right here. Thought it was Allen.... Nope. Tried T-15. Nope. T-20 didn't work the first time, but after reading your comment, I tried it again. Locked in immediately and I got it off. Thank you!
I've managed to remove the tork bolt T20 in the chuck on my dcd778 but no further forward despite using the strongest allan key locked in the chuck and beating the life out of it as per thd video. Does this fix work with the dcd778. I've seen several videos casting doubt on this fix. Seems a shame to trash a working hammer drill when Dewalt themselves offer areplacement chuck so there must be a way. Thanks
No joy, I used a hot air gun with fine tip to heat the T20 and then a hammer drill to get it off. The next stage failed, Used huge force with not loosening. I am trying now to dismantle the tool from the back/inside. Dismantled the gearbox with photos all the way. Do I hit the shaft now? Scary. Any suggestions?
Ok mine has a very large Torx opening behind the retaining screw. I don’t have an Allen torx wrench that size but it looks like you just are clamping the Allen wrench with the chuck anyways. I tried that and put the speed on 1 and hit it with a hammer and it just jumps about 180 degrees and is still very much on there. Should the drill be in reverse? Should it be in neutral? What should the torque setting be 1-15 or drill ?
If small cylindrical bits (no flat sides) slip on chuck when encountering torque does that mean it needs to be replaced? I swear I can't have more then 4 hours on the drill
That exactly what I did with my DCD998. Nobody mentions or has a video of that. I put a vicegrip plier around base of chuck, put drill facing down and hit vicegrip with hammer a few times and came out with spindle. Now need to replace one in my DCD791 Type 3 but unsure if screw inside is removable or have to do the vicegrip method as well.
On mine the old chuck had seized open, so I could not tighten the chuck down on a hex wrench. I was able to clamp down very hard on the outside of the chuck with some vise grip pliers and work the chuck off the threads.
You picked up something that resembled a screw driver and never said whether it was a flat head screw driver or what it was. Do all Dewalt keyless drill chucks have a retaining screw?
I tried everything but the retaining screw inside the chuck dont turn at all.. it's stock.! Do you have any trick for that?? (I know it's reverse) thank you!
As much as hate the smell of WD40, I just sprayed inside down on the screw head and around it. A little here and a little there I think is better than just spraying the snot out of it in fear of harming any other parts. Stand or lean the drill upwards overnight and maybe later up in the day. Making sure your screw driver bit is in place on top of the screw, tap on it several times and then try to torque it out. No luck repeat the process. It WILL come out. Don't let it get ya.
Managed to do it with an impact driver. Getting the actual chuck out was not as easy as yours though. I had to take it apart. But done now ready for new one. Thank you
Anybody know if this works on a DCD794 to swap to a metal chuck? And if so, compatibility? Rohm 1322451 fits most Dewalts but that model wasn't on their finder.
How can you use an allen wrench if the chuck teeth are stuck open or one is broken? If this is the case what would work to help remove the chuck after the screw is removed.
The chuck was stuck so hard that your metod didnt work at first. I almost gave up. Then I took a hammer and banged a coupe of times at the end of the chuck, inwards toward the motor. Then it was possible to turn the chuck off the spinle!
My problem is the opposite. My chuck is stuck open. How do you un-chuck the chuck that is stuck open chucked? (Update, should work with a broken bit also) with an open jaw chanel lock and a fresh battery get the jaws moving. Grab the collar and work the jaws back and forth (forward-reverse) and........avoid a work bench. Mine is sturdy but still had bounce. First hit braced on concrete broke it loose ( I hammered on it for 10 minutes first.).
Your video is a bit misleading. Your process will work fine on a fresh brandy new out of the box light duty drill but not on one that has seen years of hard use like my 1/2" 3 speed heavy duty unit with metal gear box. A sharp rap with a dead blow hammer? Try chucking up a 1/2" allen socket & hammering on using a 1/2" drive pneumatic automotive wrench. Still no luck but I will get it off somehow. Another video used a chop saw to cut off as much of the old chuck as possible and still had difficulty. That will be my next approach. Remember, if someone put it together someone else will figure out how to take it apart.
On my "999" the chuck makes clicking noises while tightening, even if there is no bit . It also makes clicking noises when I loosen, I've never had a chuck that did that. Is it like that for anyone else out there.
@@gbww no, just hold the chuck lightly in your hand and squeeze the trigger, fully, but lightly close the truck all the way. Then reverse the direction on the trigger and fully, but lightly open the chuck all the way. After once or maybe a couple of times it should re-seat everything and the noise will go away. everything
Ever think undoing that screw would be loads easier if you had a battery powered machine that could spin it out, leaving you holding the screwdriver still?
Well mine has no center bolt to unscrew, no torx, its only a round hole, so i cant remove the chuck. Probably was press in like a nail or a rivet. Its the model dcd777 bought in 2018, bruhless 20 volts i-on . DEFINITELY BUYING ANOTHER BRAND, I WONT PAY FOR THE BRAND NAME ANYMORE!!!!!!
This does not cover the fact that the torx retaining screw can, or is most likey frozen in place and you will end up striping the thread thus not gaining access to the Allen wrench slot.

@@TSGEnt I noticed the same thing in my DCD777 chuck. Chrome fastener inside ... i have no bits that fit.

Now I stripped my t20, thanks
Thank you for sharing your knowledge. Your method is the easiest one. Again thank you!
My dad isn’t here to help me figure this out so your video was super helpful and straight to the point. Thank you!
Thank you for getting to the point on how to do this without a bunch of this and that that I find miserably frustrating.
I would like to replace the chuck with a metal one
Do all chucks fit the same size bolt/thread
Thanks for the video. I tried this and the first step went okay, but the second step didn't work at all. It felt like it might be damaging the gears, so I just ordered the newest XR model, problem solved! 😆
You put out AWESOME videos sir! They're straight to the point and don't involve cry out's for SUBS & LIKES!!! THANK YOU FOR THAT!
Except for telling people who want to know, what type of head on the retaining screw. TOP SECRET!
Thanks man job done 👍
For those looking the screw is a T20 torx type.
Just the video I needed. Thank you!! Ordering my new replacement chuck
Thank you for taking the time to show us how to do it.
My chuck works (I think as it opens and closes) the drill won't drill it is like the ”clutch” is stripped. Any thoughts before I open it up? Thanks for the video. Excellent
Jesus that's an incredibly useful video. I've asked a million people how to do this and no one knows.

Wish I would have watched this ahead of time. I broke the head off the screwdriver because I didn't realize the holder screw is reverse thread!
THANKS
I have a DeWalt DCD771 Type 2 and striking the Allen key is not breaking the chuck loose. Do you have any additional resources?
Wonderful, now how do I get the jammed driver bit out of the chuck to get access to the retaining screw?
I used a hammer to dislodge mine, and a great tip for stuck chucks is to use a small piece of rubber mat around the chuck for grip to undo it
Nice video but what if a drill bit stock on it?

They always do it so easy. I've never seen a screw come out that easily or the chuck. My chuck is jammed all the way open so it's not gonna be easy. 😂

Wrap a cloth around the chuck to add grip, then use vice grips to loosen it and remove a stuck bit.

So the chuck isn’t suppose to just pull off? Got it, returning mine cause I think it’s broken with doing exactly that.

Mine the chuck will not loosen or tighten on anything let alone an Allen wrench. Any other suggestions?
Do I need a specific screwdriver?? I can't even see the head of the screw to determine if I need a Phillips screwdriver

It is a Torx driver.
torx 20
what drill is this because mine doesn't have a screw
