      Thank you for your honesty and for being open minded by giving this video a chance 😃
      In return I will be honest and say that I did start the channel as a “fanboy” because well, there really weren’t many other decent alternatives other than Tesla back in the day! However now with better offerings which demand my attention, I am focusing my efforts towards more balanced reviews which I hope is coming through in my videos.

    Another good real life review. Excellent conclusion - look at the strengths and weakness of each and then select which best suits your needs. I notice you gave a price difference of $3000, but it is actually closer to $5000 as Tesla has a $400 oder fee and a $1400 delivery fee, whereas BYD does not have these fees. Also as you said BYD includes some cables, roof shades and a tire repair kit which will cost extra if you buy Tesla and want them.

    • @LudicrousFeed
      @LudicrousFeed  4 місяці тому +6

      Thanks! Yes the extra $1400+$400 is a sneaky addition 😉 I think I made note of it as an added text at the bottom of the screen when I was discussing the price 🤑

    • @rebym
      @rebym 4 місяці тому +2

      @@LudicrousFeed That's fine, but it undermines the whole validity of this comparison. The difference in price between the Tesla and the BYD you tested was almost $5000. The difference between the Tesla and a BYD Performance is also around $5000.

    • @Paul-ow9dd

      The TESLA $400 order fee is deducted from the final invoice.

    • @LudicrousFeed
      @LudicrousFeed  4 місяці тому +1

      Tesla’s $400 fee is deducted yes but if you study the invoice carefully, the $400 has already been paid when you place an order. So it’s not a deposit because it’s not subtracted from the MSRP … unlike with BYD which is a true $1000 deposit and is deducted from the MSRP on the final invoice.
      Happy to be corrected on my quick maths

      The Tesla network is also quite expensive for non Teslas, where it can be used. It's even more expensive for Teslas themsleves, compared to other public chargers. In addition, the Telsa network in our state is actually less extensive than other networks. I guess it's a different story in NSW.

Eventhough you have been an avid supporter of Tesla for many years what you did here was completely unbiased, thorough and well choreographed. I trust your judgment on these two cars more than any other reviewer and I agree with all your comments and conclusions. For me what is really great here is that Tesla (which is an acquired taste) now has some real competition for those that have different tastes and overall EV’s win.

    Thanks for the comparison! After 3,000km I’m not regretting the Seal Premium being my first EV purchase. Tesla charging compatibility and the ADAS are valid concerns. These must be addressed quickly. Once fixed though, your comparison must surely be affected. I’ve done two long range trips. Charging is an issue, but that issue diminishes over time. Given the $80m NSW government investment into projects in flight, and the $200m allocated overhaul, the next 12 months should put concerns owning a non-Tesla to rest.
    And IMHO the Seal looks better on the inside and out!

      Hi Tom halfway into a 2 day Model 3 Highland RWD rental. A very easy car to drive within our very low urban speed limits. A mix of freeway and urban road driving (max 100km/hr) average seems to be about 112Wh/km. have tried out a couple hours 10amp PowerPoint charging at home with our rooftop solar, about 2.5hrs to go from 60 to 70% charge. Awesome video as always. I originally wanted to get a Seal because of how amazing they look both inside and out, but when I sat in it, I struggled a little with visibility out the front from the pillar above the windscreen blocking my view. I ended up going with Tesla Model 3 Highland LR but also got a BYD Atto which we’re picking up on Thursday to replace our SUV. What’s funny about that purchase is that I wanted a Model Y but my wife struggled with visibility and kept putting it into reverse so we swapped from the Model Y to the Atto.

    Excellent video Tom, I drove the seal awd in Ireland recently & the quiet cabin & soft suspension were the standout for me. Have you noticed any poor paint finish/rough edges under the car - a UK comparison of Seal, M3 & i6 was on about it. In Ireland the sales rep said its dealer ONLY service every 20k kms?? Also warranty is different on several components not for instance like the Kia 7yr/150k kms.
    Any thoughts on their resale values?

    • @LudicrousFeed
      @LudicrousFeed  3 місяці тому +1

      Thanks! Yes warranty differs between regions for example in Australia, some components are 3 years (infotainment system) vs 4 years for other parts. Servicing schedule is the same here in Aus: every 20000km. The first 3 month service is complimentary and is more of a 'baby check' to ensure customer satisfaction no doubt. As to resale value, it's too early to tell but historically popular makes/models/variants tend to keep their value better. I have intel from BYD that the Premium variant in Aus (RWD LR) is the best selling so far so by my reckoning it should present the best resale down the track hopefully of the 3 trims we have here

  • @Paul-ow9dd
    @Paul-ow9dd 4 місяці тому +4

    Today (Friday) was an interesting day for me. I had a third test drive of the Model 3 RWD, then paid the $400 and ordered a white with dark seats. I chose the white mainly for ease of touching up the inevitable stone chips with a toothpick and a steady hand. We recently had a Golf 7 wagon and Polo with standard white and they have proved fairly easy to keep looking ok with a few touch-ups. Although I liked the red (+$2600) and blue (+$1500) Model 3's.
    I then went up the road and cancelled my order for either a Seal Premium or Performance. Kudos to BYD for refunding my $1000 deposit to my bank account within a couple of hours. I really wasn't expecting the refund to happen for several days at least.
    I've driven both the Seal Performance and Premium. I was blown away by the performance with its incredible power. I also found the Premium to be more than adequate in the power arena. It may have been the Premium demo but, I found the performance to be a little smoother with less road vibration through the body and steering wheel than the Premium, but honestly would have been happy with either, as they are good value for money - better I think than the Tesla. But I do like the Tesla software - never having owned the brand before, and I'm sure I'll accept the indicators on the steering wheel, and I even think I'm already liking the minimalist layout of the Tesla.
    The seats in the Seal are noticeably plusher than in the Model 3. The Model 3 seats are better than in the Atto 3 but don't come close to the Seal. The glass roof in the Seal is definitely cooler than the roof in the Model 3, but down here in Tassie, I'll put up with a few days of extra heat on my head.
    Then why did I buy the Tesla M3? One main reason! The Seal's low(er) ground clearance is a major flaw in its design. It is a VERY low car. On my steep driveway where is joins to the flat concrete car port area, I only had 2 centimetres of clearance at the front leading edge of the bumper. This was with no one (including the driver) in the vehicle - it was fully unladen. My Volkswagen Polo which is a bit low has 5 centimetres clearance at the same point and the Tesla M3 has 6 centimetres. Unfortunately, EV's (the ones I've looked at) don't have a sacrificial plastic strip hanging down about 3 centimetres that many ICE cars have. This strip is a great warning of low clearance as it scrapes without damaging the bumper. When an EV scrapes, you've damaged the bumper. The demo Premium Seal with less than 600 kilometres on it had scrape marks on the underside of the bumper. That's my concern I said to the salesperson. There are numerous other road conditions that will likely prove problematic for the Seal as well - Higher than standard speed humps and less maintained unsealed roads etc.
    Good luck to all who have bought or are considering a Seal. Just be aware of its low clearance. I was considering a towbar on the Seal, but I think that could also be problematic due to the rear diffuser being quite low.
    The Model 3 should look good next to our Atto 3 as well. 🙂

    • @LudicrousFeed
      @LudicrousFeed  4 місяці тому +1

      Thanks for sharing! Yes the clearance is low but as I showed it’s the plastic dampers that’s being scraped so luckily the undercarriage is spared from damage

    • @Paul-ow9dd
      @Paul-ow9dd 4 місяці тому

      @@LudicrousFeed I wasn't too worried about those plastic rubberised dampers at the back of the bumper on each side. They can scratch as much as they like. The front black under part of the bumper that is the lowest point to the ground was my concern. It looks to be removeable and therefore possibly a spare part. But I can imagine it would cost a grand or two to buy. Pity as I liked the car(s) a lot and was happy to have two BYD's in the garage. My 12-year-old son is happy I got the Model 3. I think it's a good choice.

    Thanks for yet another great video from you! I always enjoy them. I just (2 weeks ago) signed up for a BYD Seal Design model (with 82,5 kWh battery and 230 kW of performance) - however it will not be delivered until May here in Denmark. One funny thing reg. charging capacity: for my European model, the max. AC charging cap. is 11 kW and not 7,5 kW as the Aussie models seem to have. That's kind of strange?!

    I appreciate your objectivity. A few questions if ok.
    Have the Tesla indicators become more intuitive now for you after driving more using them or other comments?
    What is your perception of BYDs capacity to improve their vehicles over time with software as Tesla does? For example i have a 2021 SR model 3 and it has noticeably improved, with the updates eg auto wipers and lights vastly better, UI constantly improving, regen works better, infotainment additions like Apple music and podcasts, service mode access to see and test every system in the car, maps and trip planning, connectivity to name a few.
    How do you find the regenerative braking between the two vehicles? One pedal driving in the M3 is a game changer for me and simply makes every ice vehicle i drive now feel antiquated.
    Thanks and will probably see you in Feb at the EV show.

      Based on what I’ve seen with the Atto 3 so far, updates are nowhere near as frequent as with Tesla but there have been significant milestones eg. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, App
      I think the key is to keep providing feedback via social media on comments sections such as this or other YT channels, forums, pages etc and also to provide constructive feedback to BYD. Tesla has been able to refine their product over the years due to good customer feedback so hopefully BYD can be as receptive to theirs
