No choice but also got a Seal here in Bangkok (Tesla doesn’t have insurance on their test cars. Can you believe that?!) But that’s probably a good thing. Tesla is more expensive, offers less as a package AND just beginning to build the charging network here. Has been driving my Seal for almost a week. They have already fixed the ADAS and traffic sign alert here for all new cars. The drive qualities are just amazing! I used to own a Porsche Cayman S and I am proud to say my new Seal is at least 90% as great or in some ways even better!
I'm in Thailand too. Bought the Tesla model 3 dual motor. Had it about 1 year now with 26,414km. Very pleased. I replaced a Mercedes C43 AMG. And also very near in performance and ride quality. I recently test drive the BYD Seal and can concur the similarities and capabilities put the BYD near par if not even with the Tesla. I suspect the Tesla is a bit more advanced? but if so not by much. Last year January I test drove the Tesla model 3 and was not aware the test vehicles were not insured. Bizarre.
Thailand people have made a right decision to adopt EV. With their huge volume of traffic in their city areas, more people using EV would keep their air clean and not heated by the ice car engines and the environment free from engine noise. This is good for the health of the people who live or work in the city areas. And thai people are smart (they have one of the best hospitals in the world), there is no doubt their infrastructure (especially the electrical power and the grid) would keep up with the increase in EV.
In fact, sometimes we don’t care who designed it, we care whether our money buys a product of good enough quality. German and Japanese cars are too expensive, and they don’t feel worth the money.

Great video Tom. I also enjoy sport mode 😎 . Youre right about the build quality - no rattles or squeaks inside. Had a rav4 before this and that was a bit rattly. Chinese made cars have gotten so much better in the last few years 👌
speaking of software, you can install custom UI(developed by BYD fans Community in China) for BYD which looks and works a lot better than the original version
Tom, Credit for being prepared to redo your temperature / heat videos. While I got plenty from what you did already there are some easy options to standardise results. If you buy yourself a multimeter or 2 with thermocouples you will automatically remove reflectivity issues. Airconditioning duct temperature and ambient temperature is best measured this way. With a bit of research you will find economical data recording meters. Infrared is great for surfaces within reason (looking through glass into sky can be variable) and actual thermometers (thermocouples, thermistors) best for fluids including air. Looking forward to the updated video.
It would also be interesting to see how quickly the ambient temperature changes when left switched off with no aircon. That would measure the impact of the glass roof and general insulation separate from the aircon.
Great to see you still liking your Seal Tom, I hope to get one soon, in regards to the battery, even though you get less range in some cases compared to other brands, i believe you get more than you realise because the fact that you can charge to 100per cent and other brands just to the 80 or 90 max, making the Seal battery a more useful battery and a real range in real life IMO
@simonwile5110 Yes Correct Simon, but you get degradation on your batteries, and that's why majority of Manufacturers only recomend 80 to 90 per cent, however in the BYD due to the batteries composition there is no a big degradation on the batteries by doing so, that's us why I said their range is more real life as you can use more likely the 100 per cent of your batteries, not just the 80 or 90 percent most of the time, of course this doesn't mean you can not charge other ev cars at 100 percent, hopefully this make sense
Any car with LFP battery can be safely charged to 100% regularly - Other cars with NMC/NCA batteries should only be charged to 80% daily for battery longevity
My cousin picked up his BYD seal last week and he let me drive it and I was pleasantly surprised how good it was and for the price of $50K and the interior looks so much better than the Tesla.
Thanks for the video, Tom. I have discovered today there is a software update to improve the ADAS systems. For some reason I can't get this update over the air so will have to visit a service centre, which I will do soon. Apparently we still can't save the disabling of the settings, but maybe with improvements it won't be as necessary. You may want to follow this up for yourself.
There is a lot to be said for an A4 size LANDSCAPE screen like you have in this video. When using maps, it gives you so much more info about what’s coming up ahead. Kinda jealous tbh
You should band together and send that start up feedback to BYD. Not sure why settings are reverted back. It should have a profile per person and maximum of 2-3 profiles for drivers of one household and keep the settings they want
I’ve stopped playing with the settings at startup now that BYD have released their 2401 software update: BYD Seal OTA Software Update 2401 V1.1 Australia Walkthrough and Drive ua-cam.com/video/CQwmDVC7auM/v-deo.html
Since you say it’s a lot cooler in this car, is the windscreen heat reflecting as well as roof, lv had a few vehicals over years with heat reflecting windscreens and it make a phenomenal difference in cabin temperature.
Hi Tom, first off thank you for making informative videos of the Seal! Really helpful. Do you sometimes wish/miss the extra power from performance in your day to day / spirited drive since you previously owned a powerful Tesla ? Or do you think the premium has more than sufficient power even for some fun? I’m having a bit of a problem picking the premium/performance model, I have test driven both, in short the premium for me feels just right, performance is a bit too much power but fun ~ borderline dangerous nonetheless 😂 not that I’m complaining though!
I drive my Premium Seal in sport mode and that is quick enough for me to get off the line at traffic lights if needed given 0-100kph is around the 5s mark. I actually found the Model 3 Performance acceleration crazy quick and rarely put my foot to the floor because it would be uncomfortably quick for all the occupants 😁
Always good to see your videos. Tonight the live stream is conflicting with an AEVA webinar so you may see a few regulars not around or they are split-screening the two streams at the same time should make for some hilarious comments if they post it in the wrong window. :) I'm planning on being at your stream.
Another great video Tom. Thanks! Glad you are liking your Seal but I get the feeling if you had the free option (ie. not buying for experimental or curiosity purposes) you would probably prefer the Tesla Model 3. Anyway I really enjoy your videos. I'm still waiting for my Seal even though I ordered on 19 October (because I ordered the ocean blue interior). The wait with no information on timing is starting to make me reconsider the Tesla M3 again even though the wait on that is probably long now too.
Really like your videos! Wondering if you might look into Bidirectional charging, using the V2x processes. Wallbox as one of your promotions has ( I believe) the Quaser 2 which theoretically could provide that capability. That is of course if BYD allow the Seal to discharge as well as charge. 82.5Kw battery what better way to power your house as well. BTW ordered my Seal on the weekend, will take it home to Dubbo, that should be interesting... 😊
These look like really cool cars - but the thing that got me was straight off you dive into the giant iPad and start fiddling around with pointless settings… I get in my ICE car, 10 year old VWGolf, turn the key, chuck it in D and I’m off. Adjusting air con is supper easy too… another physical tactile dial. I’m just not interested in driving a computer …
I’m test driving a Kia EV 9 at present … the same thing is happening in that the ADAS settings revert back to default on subsequent drives despite them being turned off. Is this now the new normal that manufactures need to achieve 5 star safety ratings??

@@LudicrousFeed I thought it unusual that the salesman didn't refute it or offer another car to try, he just accepted it without comment, I wondered, was the car applying a small amount of braking to regen? but didn't think of it at time to ask salesperson.
Great review. Two things i’m looking forward to getting a Tesla though is dog mode and camp mode. Game changers for me, I can live without CarPlay as the built in apps will be fine for me. If Tesla nav app gets better with crowd sourced data even better
Yeah the stay on AC is great in a Tesla You can kinda do that with the BYD via the app in a cumbersome way but the daytime running lights continue to run sometimes
Thanks Tom glad you're enjoying it, as an early owner of an Atto the OTA updates kept tweaking things and making improvements. Is there screen lag, had found Atto to be great on home screens and even on Android Auto wireless it was really responsive - ironically the wee lag in the M3 annoys me like when you press the screen to end a phone call and it doesn't seem to end straight away? Also regarding consumption, how are you finding it comparably to the Teslas for the same drive?
Haven't noticed too much screen lag yet although some of the comments suggest otherwise! Maybe I'm getting used to it lol The Tesla Model 3 I used to own (2023) had an efficiency at about 140Wh/km for a long distance drive on the highway ... I'll see how the Seal goes on the open road in a later video
Hi Tom, thank you for your review. I'm currently considering buying a seal and I watched all your videos about this. The thing that you may not have review in more detail and which may be important to me is the sound system. You say it's not really good, as far as I know dynaudio is a well-known Danish brand. Is dynaudio just a gimmick? Or is the audio on the Tesla 3 better than average? thanks Tom for your video which will be the basis for my decision, because you have 3 EVs which will be very relevant for comparison.
I honestly hadn’t heard of Dynaudio til I got my Seal! Yeah I’ll stand by the fact that the 3/Y audio is still marginally better. The Seal audio is enough for me and I wouldn’t even consider upgrading with aftermarket
@teddyagus4871 Yes, I believe that is the same company you’re referring to. BYD had a promotional video a year or two ago that had Dynaudio’s sound engineers talking about their collaboration with BYD. The video was about their speaker system on the Han, if I recall, before the Seal being released.
I laid out my arguments for both vehicles in this video: 2024 Tesla Model 3 RWD Highland Update vs BYD Seal Premium Australia ua-cam.com/video/YAaKVAST3w4/v-deo.html
What info in the HUD? can you make a video of it? Is it customisable? Also, how the sound system compares to the MY sound system? The ATTO 3 sound system is meh.
There’s not much to say about the HUD because it literally just shows the speedo and the last seen speed sign. You can also have the option of the cruise control set speed. I’ll try to show it in an upcoming vid. Seal sound system is not as good as the Model 3/Y but better than Atto 3 imo

I'm only anxious when someone reminds me 😆 On a serious note I don't go "off piste" too often on my long drives so I will rely on BYD Roadside or NRMA or whatever can get to me soonest - I'm not too keen to change the tyre on the side of the road these days (I've only ever done this once in my life). The last time I had a leak, I discovered it in my garage so I called someone out to change it. Also BYD include a compressor/injection kit when you take delivery of the car

Will they talk about byd roadside with me or who ever my insurer is I can just call them if I ever have an issue with the tyre. You can get all the updates thru OTA but it may take more time. BYD likes to experiment updates on small batch of cars before pushing out to all cars. if you go to service center you can ask to be the ginnie pigs. not sure why people prefer car play over the internal system. Carplay cannot "talk" with the car. it is mere an image of your phone.
Seal is not even the Model 3's best competitor. IMO that would go to the just released Geely Galaxy E8, which can be specced with Geely's new "golden" LFP battery pack, which charges significantly faster than the BYD blade LFP battery. It is also cheaper than the Seal too. I wonder if Geely will start exporting it to other markets at some point.
I've got a sensitive mic 😁 It's not that loud really Apparently I'm hearing some Aus Seal owners have been offered a software update ahead of a wider OTA update to fix some of the ADAS noises. Early reports indicate it's much better. I'll of course provide an update as soon as my car receives it

Thanks for your useful videos. Just had our BYD Seal under a week. Noticed when i put on my Oakley sunnies, i can hardly see the HUD. Brightness setting has little difference when changed from lowest to highest. Snow option didn't help either. Like to drive with my sunnies on. Do you have same problem?
@LudicrousFeed thank you for speedy response. Yes, it's polarised. Wonder if anyone else have same issue reading HUD with polarised lenses. And if BYD can do anything from software, or is there another colour or spectrum which is not filtered out by polarised lenses.
HUD light reflected off the windshield is partially polarized, so the polarized sun glasses will filter it out. That’s just how optics work in this case. You can verify that by rotating your sun glasses 90 degrees and look again. With that said, get a pair of sunglasses that is not polarized is a good idea.

I am curious as to whether you have problems with your DAB+ radio or not. Mine falls out all the time, almost no matter where I am here in Denmark. I also have a challenge with an annoying pitch sound that comes from the air conditioner - I can clearly hear it, and if you turn off the air conditioner, it goes away completely - It's really frustrating because it keeps me from being genuinely happy with my Seal. It also turned out that the problems I had with the sound during charging are probably due to a defective pump. So it will have to be replaced in the near future.
GPS systems use earth as a flat map. They don't take into account gradients. That is you could be doing 60km/h up a steep hill, but your GPS system indicates 55km/h. Simple trigonometry if you know the gradient angle.
13:51 I'm interested to understand more about resale, ive ordered performance, is it possible performance resale would be lower than premium or maybe would they be about the same price later on (you just lose the 10k)?
Don't buy EVs if you care about resale value. They are great cars but its a very fast moving industry and there are a lot of advancements coming so cheaper and better EVs will be coming soon. For example CATL the world's biggest lithium battery manufacturer says it expects to sell batteries at $60 per kWh or less in mid-2024, that 12 months ago it sold for $125 kWh and majority of the cost of EVs is the battery system.
Resale is relative to the initial value of the car so I think as a % the premium will probably do better because it’s the most sought after. But I don’t have a crystal ball!

Love the through-the-windscreen views Tom. Great video. Please keep us updated and lots more drives for us.
Thanks! Lots more to come
Great video Tom. I also enjoy sport mode 😎 . Youre right about the build quality - no rattles or squeaks inside. Had a rav4 before this and that was a bit rattly. Chinese made cars have gotten so much better in the last few years 👌
Agreed! It’s very well put together
The Chinese are prideful and want to match the Japanese for build quality. Kinda like the iPhone.

Glad you're liking it. Placed my order this week after wrecking my ICE car on the way home from my test drive.
Oh no, hope you’re ok 🙏 Grats on the order though
@@LudicrousFeed yeah, the roo came off worst I think.
speaking of software, you can install custom UI(developed by BYD fans Community in China) for BYD which looks and works a lot better than the original version
Good job. Nice to hear you and the car are getting along!
We’re enjoying each other’s company 😆😁
Tom, Credit for being prepared to redo your temperature / heat videos.
While I got plenty from what you did already there are some easy options to standardise results.
If you buy yourself a multimeter or 2 with thermocouples you will automatically remove reflectivity issues. Airconditioning duct temperature and ambient temperature is best measured this way. With a bit of research you will find economical data recording meters.
Infrared is great for surfaces within reason (looking through glass into sky can be variable) and actual thermometers (thermocouples, thermistors) best for fluids including air.
Looking forward to the updated video.
Thanks! Stay tuned - I’ve got a few ideas for the design of the retest
It would also be interesting to see how quickly the ambient temperature changes when left switched off with no aircon. That would measure the impact of the glass roof and general insulation separate from the aircon.
Thanks for the informative video!
Pleasure 🙏
Great to see you still liking your Seal Tom, I hope to get one soon, in regards to the battery, even though you get less range in some cases compared to other brands, i believe you get more than you realise because the fact that you can charge to 100per cent and other brands just to the 80 or 90 max, making the Seal battery a more useful battery and a real range in real life IMO
You can charge any EV to 100% this isn’t unique to BYD.
Any car with LFP battery can be safely charged to 100% regularly
- Other cars with NMC/NCA batteries should only be charged to 80% daily for battery longevity
Great to hear you're still very happy with the Seal Tom! Look forward to watching a long road trip video in it (if you're going to make one?)
Yup! Now that school is back in session, if I have a weekday free I’ll head off for a long drive 😎
My cousin picked up his BYD seal last week and he let me drive it and I was pleasantly surprised how good it was and for the price of $50K and the interior looks so much better than the Tesla.
It’s pretty good value right!
Hmm I’ll probably wait until the baby check in a couple of months … unless I get super desperate
Much better interior than a Tesla.
I think there’s more detail for sure
There is a lot to be said for an A4 size LANDSCAPE screen like you have in this video. When using maps, it gives you so much more info about what’s coming up ahead. Kinda jealous tbh
Yeah it’s a pretty sweet screen. Of course it can be switched to portrait mode which is not compatible with Apple CarPlay
Many of the Tesla model 3 and Y panels are not plastic , they are Aluminium so checking paint thickness may not be valid.
Yes you are correct! I’ll add a correction to my notes
We need this in the U.S. asap
no... is banned for your freedom... drive this car for a week and you will become a raging COMMUNIST !!!
I have an Atto3 and always have Carplay on too, it's just better.

You should band together and send that start up feedback to BYD. Not sure why settings are reverted back. It should have a profile per person and maximum of 2-3 profiles for drivers of one household and keep the settings they want

Since you say it’s a lot cooler in this car, is the windscreen heat reflecting as well as roof, lv had a few vehicals over years with heat reflecting windscreens and it make a phenomenal difference in cabin temperature.
I’m unsure whether the windscreen has also been treated
Love this car had the model 3 and Y now have the MG4 Xpower enjoy love the videos!
Wow what a garage!
Always good to see your videos. Tonight the live stream is conflicting with an AEVA webinar so you may see a few regulars not around or they are split-screening the two streams at the same time should make for some hilarious comments if they post it in the wrong window. :) I'm planning on being at your stream.
Thanks! Glad to see there’s more EV content out there 👍 We’ve always got the episode on replay of course 🙏
I don’t think the magnetic pen had issues because of plastic. The body of the model Y Is made of aluminium…
Yup noted and corrected in pinned comment and video description
Another great video Tom. Thanks! Glad you are liking your Seal but I get the feeling if you had the free option (ie. not buying for experimental or curiosity purposes) you would probably prefer the Tesla Model 3. Anyway I really enjoy your videos. I'm still waiting for my Seal even though I ordered on 19 October (because I ordered the ocean blue interior). The wait with no information on timing is starting to make me reconsider the Tesla M3 again even though the wait on that is probably long now too.
If both cars were free, I’d get both cars 😆
I need a bit of variety in my life
🤣fair comment!@@LudicrousFeed
Really like your videos! Wondering if you might look into Bidirectional charging, using the V2x processes. Wallbox as one of your promotions has ( I believe) the Quaser 2 which theoretically could provide that capability. That is of course if BYD allow the Seal to discharge as well as charge. 82.5Kw battery what better way to power your house as well. BTW ordered my Seal on the weekend, will take it home to Dubbo, that should be interesting... 😊
Yes waiting on Wallbox to bring their Quasar 2 to Aus for V2H 🙏
Would be great to have so much charge in the Seal battery to power the home 😁
I like how you never talk about the horrendous screen delay and lag
Maybe I’ve gotten used to it 🤷♂️
...on apple car play.
For an EV im impressed, What is the warranty on BYD ??
3-6 years for the vehicle depending on the parts. 8 years for the traction battery. Full details: bydautomotive.com.au/public/vehicle-warranty-2022.pdf
I've posted this on other channels, but has anyone experienced surging on motorway/freeway 80-100kph, as if one is stepping on and off the pedal, noticed it when salesperson was driving, but when I drove, made sure I held the pedal steady, salesperson wouldn't refute it on the RWD long distance battery car, also does anyone else find the rear screen abnormally shallow?
No surging for me
@@christopherhunt9150 the Q, why didn't the saleperson refute my observation?
Never experienced said surging
@@LudicrousFeed I thought it unusual that the salesman didn't refute it or offer another car to try, he just accepted it without comment, I wondered, was the car applying a small amount of braking to regen? but didn't think of it at time to ask salesperson.
Great review. Two things i’m looking forward to getting a Tesla though is dog mode and camp mode. Game changers for me, I can live without CarPlay as the built in apps will be fine for me. If Tesla nav app gets better with crowd sourced data even better
Yeah the stay on AC is great in a Tesla
You can kinda do that with the BYD via the app in a cumbersome way but the daytime running lights continue to run sometimes
Thanks for the informative video. Just wondering why you have your phone plugged into a charger when it’s on the wireless charging dock already?
Apple CarPlay requires phone to be plugged in. The wireless charger area can be configured to be switched off (which I’ve done)
Maybe I'm getting used to it lol
The Tesla Model 3 I used to own (2023) had an efficiency at about 140Wh/km for a long distance drive on the highway ... I'll see how the Seal goes on the open road in a later video
How's the AC ? test drive here the ac is not cold
It’s been good enough for me this summer
Can't wait for mine i got the 3.8s
How exciting!
IF u have to choose one, between Tesla M3 vs the seal, which one would you choose?
I laid out my arguments for both vehicles in this video: 2024 Tesla Model 3 RWD Highland Update vs BYD Seal Premium Australia
ua-cam.com/video/YAaKVAST3w4/v-deo.html
I'd would like to order a DYD car instead of a Tesla. How can I do that?
In Australia, you can order directly from the BYD Automotive website. Otherwise head into a local showroom

Gday Tom, you mentioned no spare tyre... do you ever get anxious knowing you don't have one if a tyre does go flat?? what is the process if you do pop a tyre ?? Thanks mate.
I'm only anxious when someone reminds me 😆
On a serious note I don't go "off piste" too often on my long drives so I will rely on BYD Roadside or NRMA or whatever can get to me soonest - I'm not too keen to change the tyre on the side of the road these days (I've only ever done this once in my life). The last time I had a leak, I discovered it in my garage so I called someone out to change it.
Also BYD include a compressor/injection kit when you take delivery of the car

I'm still waiting for my seal premium here in melb... I call often to see if they can give me a ship date when it could be comeing but they don't say anything at all. it jist says late jan-feb on my byd account. so really hopeing it's not to far way.
well I really really appreciate your reply.
Will they talk about byd roadside with me or who ever my insurer is I can just call them if I ever have an issue with the tyre. Cause I was also reading that EV vehicles just can't be towed any kind of way cause of the braking system.
BYD comes with 12 month roadside assistance - I’ll probably do a video on this soon. EVs should be placed on a flatbed yes

Nice, good tip.
I’d use the car’s built in nav more if it had better EV trip planning
Waiting for your Supercharger test, I've heard Seal doesn't work with V3s?
Yes I believe BYD are on the case as Seal is currently not compatible with V3 Tesla Superchargers (Jan 31 2024)
Big question: which car do the kids prefer?
They probably prefer the Y but only because it’s more spacious
Makes sense. @@LudicrousFeed
In sunshine do the big screen in the middle and the speedometer stay clear and easy to read ?
It’s been quite good so far with no glare on sunny days
Is this model you have with panorama glass sun roof ?
Yes correct
BYD definitely makes amazing cars.
Certainly of very good value 👍
The BYD Seal being competitive with the Tesla M3 bodes well for the future of EVs.
The more competition we have the better
Seal is not even the Model 3's best competitor. IMO that would go to the just released Geely Galaxy E8, which can be specced with Geely's new "golden" LFP battery pack, which charges significantly faster than the BYD blade LFP battery. It is also cheaper than the Seal too. I wonder if Geely will start exporting it to other markets at some point.
Is the regen sufficient for your liking ?. I love maximum.
Yeah it’s not one pedal but when I press the brake, the power reading goes into the deep negatives anyway so regen braking occurs nonetheless
I really hope they update the ADAS settings sooner than later.
BTW...that indicator is LOUD! Is it just the microphone? Or is it actually loud?
I've got a sensitive mic 😁 It's not that loud really
Apparently I'm hearing some Aus Seal owners have been offered a software update ahead of a wider OTA update to fix some of the ADAS noises. Early reports indicate it's much better. I'll of course provide an update as soon as my car receives it

Hi. One Question. While driving, does unlocking the doors via the drivers side door control panel make all the Exterior Door Handles Pop out? I hope so bcos its necessary when swooping up the kids from school.
Yes it definitely does as I also use this function for school runs
I noticed the rear air vents dont have the typical flow adjuster, which my kids wont like. can the rear vents be closed from the Infoscreen?

Still or it's a given?🙂 Don't forget that in big Journey you should keep the odometer in 113/114km/h to get 110 GPS speeds🫡
Noted!
So why does the BYD Seal have a maximum AC charge rate of 7 kW is Australia (6.6 kW actually) but 11 kW in Europe?
That is a very good question
I believe it's part of the reason they're able to sell it cheaper in Australia than other countries.
Perhaps you can ask BYD when next you speak to them. I can only guess it was to keep the price down. It's a disappointing decision nonetheless. Crippling AC charging when they're already behind Tesla on DC charging (especially with regard to the Supercharger network) seems to be a bad business choice.@@LudicrousFeed
I’d imagine that it is to do with cost. I’ve not found 7kW to be a practical problem though.

Brightness setting has little difference when changed from lowest to highest. Snow option didn't help either. Like to drive with my sunnies on. Do you have same problem?
Are your Oakley sunnies polarised? I wonder if that’s an issue with all HUDs. My sunnies you see in the video aren’t polarised
Which software version do you have? There was another australian guy with 2309 version which has many limitations. In Europe the latest is at least 2311.
I’m currently also on 2309
@@LudicrousFeed it seems like a lot have happened since and some Australians updated version st the dealer. Of course, ADAS updates but also integration with AA and probably Carplay. Especially easy switching between AA and system. For example being able to swipe down and up in AA to access controls.

With ADAS - i have never had any problem but i always keep my hand on the steering wheel. Does it kick in when both hands are off the wheel?

I also have a challenge with an annoying pitch sound that comes from the air conditioner - I can clearly hear it, and if you turn off the air conditioner, it goes away completely - It's really frustrating because it keeps me from being genuinely happy with my Seal.
It also turned out that the problems I had with the sound during charging are probably due to a defective pump. So it will have to be replaced in the near future.
Ah sorry to hear about these issue … hopefully the replacement will solve them
