    The BYD Seal is a lot cheaper than the Tesla Model 3 here in Australia. I can't believe how much is being charged for the Seal in the UK. The Seal is a brilliant car - we're very happy with our purchase.

    I’ve owned an AWD Performance Seal for 2 months it costs less than a RWD 3 here in Thailand. Fantastic car, great performance, luxury, refinement and no squeaks or rattles. You can access heated/cooled seats by dragging down from the top of the screen. The sunroof is silver coated and does a much better job than Teslas at reflecting heat. I have the V2L hooked up to my solar system to provide backup power to my house (videos on my channel for the doubters)

      I’m sure the BYD is a great car but in the UK it starts at £5k more than the model 3 standard range which makes no sense ,fair enough the long range BYD seal is £1300 cheaper than the long range model 3 but from what I can see people are willing to pay that little bit more for the Tesla long range,the model 3 over here is a no brainer and pre-orders now are nearly 2 month waiting list so sales are very strong.

    I've been reading about the regen on the Seal and it seems like they've implemented the regen through the brake pedal. When the pedal is first pressed it engages strong regen and blends the brakes in as needed. It appears this was aimed at people switching from ICE cars. It really is a matter of preference though, I'm on the side of what BYD have implemented to have more control of the car.

    Test drove SEAL in Australia over the weekend...Quite, Comfortable with excellent interior and driver ergonomics and driving dynamics. The minimalist approach of TESLA 3 is going to cost them "new" customers, coming from petrol and hybrid cars well used to buttons, indicators, head up displays and Apple car play and android auto. A driver still needs to feel in control, a driving pleasure. Overall, I think BYD wins on ride, buttons with phone integration and a strong design language. Tesla stays strong on charging network and a faster charging, I wouldn't be surprised if Tesla brings back some of it's lost functions in coming years

    • @22Epic

      One thing to take into consideration is the updates you get with a Tesla. The BYD infotainment will be dated in 2 years whereas the Tesla will still be updated in 5 years and look relevant. (Check the Tesla infotainment 3 years ago and compare it to now). Also Tesla may not be in the best financial state, but it will likely stays around in the coming years, you can't say the same for Chinese's brands. Last point is the efficiency of the Tesla, in the coming years it will probably cost more to charge a car than to simply put fuel in it, so you may want the most efficient one. The BYD is not a bad, but it's a bet to buy one.

    53k miles on a M3, extended test drive on the BYD Seal. The BYD is definitely a more comfortable car to travel in with great quality materials and ride comfort and sound insulation. I also think the BYD looks a bit better. The cabin and the seats are top quality and the exterior is also really nice, looks even better in person. But the M3 (even the old one) is just a bit more fun to drive. Its direct and darty (which I like) charges WAY faster, has the network and also a very large service network. The BYD is in its infancy, driving 100 miles to a service centre at the moment isnt ideal....UI wise the Teslas are also miles ahead. Menus make sense and are intuitive and grouped properly ie Climate/Display/Controls etc. The BYD has a bit of everything everywhere. Menus, pull downs, side swipes. That being said the Seals central screen is something special its so large and so crisp when navigating its a joy. Its also worth noting according BYD any Seals shipped before March come with the indicator on the right stalk and wipers on the left. My test car had this and was a nightmare to adjust to. Apparently the norm in other right drive markets. It also has the most aggressive lane departure system Ive ever seen (Even more aggressive than the MG4). Even an few inches left or right of centre it was dragging you all over the place. Can be turned off no doubt but needs adjusting. Id deffo still recommend it but I think it still needs some maturity and bug ironing to make it a sure thing. Most of that can be done through software so should be easy. Credit to them though honestly it rides as well a C Class/3 Series maybe even a smidgeon better. There arent many EVs that can do that. The new Tesla indicator is a no go for me too 🤣 the New M3 ups its quality considerably but not enough to tempt me for one either... so I'll be hanging on to my old M3 for now. If anyone has one, that would be my advice, especially if like me you still have ultrasonic sensors 🤣 (If you know you know....)

If I was buying now, I would certainly take a Seal for a test drive - although I would miss the one pedal driving (once you get used to the one pedal driving, its hard to go back as I find it more relaxing and efficient). Agree the removal of the stalks on the Tesla is a backward step, even if you do get used to it, its still not as good. As it is I have a 2022 Model 3 RWD, which has the stalks, so I'm more than happy to stick with it (as the stalk delete cancels the many benefits of the Highland for me)!

    I am so with Ginny; the indicator buttons on the steering wheel are frustratingly awful - I hate it! And it gets even worse on the yoke, as you can't feed it as easilly arround with both hands. Every round-about becomes an indicator nightmare. And I do think that Nicola is right about the Tesla being more robot than car. It is very good at what it is doing, but with a complete lack of enjoyment to it. Styling-wise, it is nice but not interesting. - And the fart-noises... give me a break. If it was animal-noises like a chimp, cat or a dog, then maybe I would find that somewhat amusing, but fart-noises... I am not 5 years anymore. Apart from Teslas supercharger network, I think the BYD is the more attractive option here; looks better and seems to be more involving to drive - not to mention it got a real indicator stalk. BTW, I do think the general Electrfying audience is informed enough of EVs in general to have heard of BYD before. I saw my first one ten years ago: a taxi at the Barcelona Airport, and the Atto 3 has become such a massive hit here in Sweden even my parents (who are not into cars at all) know what a BYD is.

All the cameras, sentry mode, dashcam, autopilot with all its features, one pedal driving, collision avoidance front and back as it tries to avoid that car that will hit you from behind and the front, it tightens your seatbelts before the crash. High fidility park assist, Tesla's Google maps, navigation system is far superior as it also calculates how many people are going to the charging station during your long trips. The reason why BYD doesn't offer 1-Pedal driving is because the majority of the drivers simply don't like this feature. It feels unnatural to most people. I am sure after getting used to it, more people might be OK with this feature. BYD did actually incorporate the regenerative braking benefit of "1-Pedal Driving" into the braking system itself. In the BYD Seal, the regen kicks in when you first step on the brake pedal. The actual friction braking will eventually take over if the braking force required exceeds the regen capability. BYD's system works flawlessly. The ultimate goal is to recuperate as much kinetic energy as possible, and the regenerative braking system in the BYD Seal achieves this efficiently. All drivers are used to "coasting" as a natural part of driving. BYD wanted to preserve this feeling, and I am so glad they did that. One of BYD's major goal has always been to make the transition from ICE cars to EVs as seamless as possible. That's why they outsell all their competitors in China by a huge margin (including Tesla).

    • @LouDeVere
      @LouDeVere Рік тому +1

      I just don't understand why BYD can't offer One Pedal Driving as a software option. You just go into vehicle settings and select the Regen tab and select the level which suits you - the driver - the best. This way, everyone wins. Those who would like greater Regen can have this easily whilst those who are not that keen on the feature, can chose little or no regenerative braking. After driving a Tesla Model Y, I definitely know which I level I would set.

And, how does the Seal compare? Also, can you play music from a USB stick? All Teslas had a data ready usb port for this until they removed them a couple years ago. Does the Seal have such a port? @sjwright2 Рік тому +2

      You can still play music from a USB on a newer Model 3, but it requires some trickery. If you're comfortable with computers, you could replace the sentry USB stick in the glovebox with a larger device, ideally a "real" SSD (which use higher quality flash memory that's far more durable than any USB stick). Connect it to a computer and format it with two partitions, one for sentry and another for music.
      Or you can connect a hub in the glovebox USB port, use one port for the sentry USB stick and another for your music. Tesla explicitly advises against this, however.
      Finally there are aftermarket USB port modules for the centre console which give you more ports including one which supports data connections.

      @@sjwright2 I actually tried the USB hub approach in my Model Y but couldnt get it to work. My solution was to insert my music USB where the sentry stick normally is, and just live without sentry mode. The other approaches you mention are above my pay grade. I am not happy with Tesla since the bean counters took over and are saving a few pennies by putting a power only usb in the center console where there used to be a data ready usb in prior years. This is analogous to Tesla saving some money by removing the turn signal and shifter stalks. I am not a fan of those changes either.

    What a great review. None of the BS about 0-60 times and drag races. Just a lot of practical comparisons on things that would affect everyday driving.
    I have just had the chance to sit in the Seal and inspect the interior and have a play around with the infotainment and controls. As a current Tesla Model 3 owner I was quite impressed. The seats are firmer but more supportive, and the HVAC system is much better. It is let down slightly by the lower resolution displays compared to the Tesla. How much would it really add to the cost to put a better quality display in the Seal?
    Since the new (highland) version of the Model 3 was unveiled, I have been taking note of how often I use both the indicator stalk (including the washer/wiper button on the end) and the direction mode selector (gear stalk) in my current Model 3, without looking. I just know intuitively where the controls are. By the same token, the scroll wheels on the Model 3 steering wheel fall easily under your thumb and don’t require you to look for them like the buttons on the ‘conventional’ steering wheel of the Seal. I struggled with the lack of driver’s display in the Tesla so much, I have fitted an aftermarket HUD.
    Seriously considering changing my Model 3 for a Seal next year. While the Supercharger network is good, 95% of my charging is at home.

    Test drove the BYD and hated it. OK I currently drive a model 3 and love the minimal styling. BYD seems so cluttered. I didn't like the ride, the whining noise at low speed, the constant nagging lane keeping, the laggy screen. The front view with those vents I think looks awful. Still reviews like this made me give the BYD a test drive so now I have an informed opinion. I can now get my new model 3 in February without any worries. Also would someone please do a model 3 review without spending half theme talking about indicator stalks. It will take about 2 days to get used to it.

      Test drove both - the AWD Seal is just a better, more comfortable drive and is quicker. Style and experience is subjective, Tesla’s all look bland and basically exactly the same to me, the Seal looks more sporty.
      The screen is better quality in the M3 though undoubtedly. Lots of 3rd party apps you can add to the Seal though through exploits but would likely invalidate warranty.

      All the things you need to do while driving are on physical buttons. A lot of things are completely automatic and the car operates these things well. The only thing that you might feel like fiddling with while driving is the heating. Generally set to automatic it maintains a comfortable temperature. The control to increase and decrease temperature is at the bottom of the screen and after a while muscle memory takes you to it. Alternatively, this is what I do a lot, push the right hand steering wheel control and say “temperature 22”. Works a treat and safer than buttons.

    I looked at the BYD and noisier, softer, more expensive for the base model. (I got the RWD version of the Tesla) 262 miles in general per day covers all my needs and the 600 mile journey added 1 hour and that was because I needed to arrive with 70% charge as there was no destination charge until the following day. As someone who was weighing up the Model 3 Highland and Seal Performance for a long time it came right down to test driving a Model 3 for my decision to be made.
    I’ve now owned my Seal Performance for almost 2wks and basically my thoughts echo Ginny and Nicola’s to a tee. In Australia the Seal is priced significantly less than the Euro and UK markets and in a lot of reviews I’ve seen from those markets, the Seal’s high pricing has been its biggest negative but it’s great to finally see an objective review instead of the typical Tesla bias in a lot of reviews.
    This video has certainly triggered many Tesla fans!!

      @@newbris I test drove the Model 3 RWD and LR for 45mins each. There’s absolutely no doubts there’s a huge upgrade over the previous Model 3 and does everything better.
      The main talking point is obviously the stalk removal. Gave them a good workout in varying scenarios and while they weren’t really an issue and it took minimal time to get use to them there were times where they were simply an inconvenience and these situations can’t be avoided based simply on hand/wheel positioning.
      Ride comfort and cabin noise improvements are certainly noticeable on smooth roads but still got some noise at highway speeds.
      The main issue but not really an issue given it’s in beta was the auto-gear selector. Only got to try it a few times but on a couple of occasions it made the wrong selection and if you were none-the-wiser it could be a rather ominous outcome. I have seen previous videos where Tesla Vision has grossly misjudged objects and measurements so hopefully there’s improvements there.
      The other things I’m not a big fan of: gear selection on the centre screen, exterior looks, everything on the centre screen and completely minimalist look and feel.
      Overall I was impressed with the upgraded Model 3 but ultimately, I still prefer the look of both the interior and exterior of the Seal and for the money, I still can’t go past it. The (Tesla) RWD in my preferred config would be $70K ($64K after the rebate) and the LR would be $80K while the Seal Performance is $72K.

    I spent a long time mulling over both options and have (or had) a deposit on and test drove both:
    I preferred the tm3 throttle response which I found to be instant, the seal had some delay (I was in sports mode for both)
    The seal cannot compete with Tesla sentry mode, if you’ve used it before you’ll know what you’re missing. The seal in my country does not ship with a dash cam. The Dealer suggested I buy a 3rd party dashcam
    Premium connectivity for relatively unlimited UA-cam Netflix streaming when travelling with the kids vs a 2gb data cap on the seal (albeit free),
    my head hit the roof in the rear seat of the seal, not so the m3 (I’m 6’4),
    seal performance is 7k more expensive than the m3lr. (Shouldn’t it be the other way around being the challenger)
    What I liked from the seal - imo slightly better driving position, heads up display (note that I couldn’t get the steering wheel in a position I liked with out obscuring the second display), vtl, tow rating of 1500kg. vs 1000kg on the Tesla.
    On balance going I’ll be going ahead with the M3 long range due to driving dynamics and software, 7k cheaper. Very close call though.

    Nice to have a review on the RWD Seal, as most reviews are on the AWD version, but finally a few are coming through on the RWD version.
    Interesting how in the UK the Seal costs more than the Tesla. Here in Australia the Mid spec Seal with the larger battery (as in this review) is ~AUD 4k cheaper than the entry level M3 Highland.
    Prices vary as well. The on road (driveaway) cost of the two BYD Seal versions here in AUS that are the same as in the UK (although we have a cheaper entry level Seal down here as well) are Seal Premium 230kw motor with larger battery at ~AUD63k (~33.5 GBP) and the Performance 390kw motor AWD (Excellence) ~AUD73k (~39k GBP) The entry level Seal with a 150kw motor (same as in the Atto 3) and 18 inch wheels is ~53k driveaway.
    I totally agree with the comment on lack of one pedal driving. Perhaps it could be added in a software update (or perhaps not that simple?) I drove an MG4, where you could select one pedal mode in the menu. But it was too severe. Needs a slider control for personal preference within certain parameters. Tesla have it pretty much right. I also recently drove the M3 update and was quite impressed and am waiting to drive the Seal before ordering.

    Great to see a car podcast by two women!!! Unfortunately, I disagree with the reviews of both the M3 and the Seal. If the Seal is anything like the Atto 3, the one pedal driving sux and the whole experience is too 'legacy' for the sake of being less of a 'jump'. No mention of the lack of autosteer and sentry mode. No mention of the double glazed windows, suspension etc. And the supercharger network is not 'one of the best', it is clearly the only decent network! It's actually the opposite - the BYD styling is already obviously outdated and trying too hard - it's an obvious Chinese attempt at appealing to unsophisticated buyers who think buttons, knobs and add-on bits are what makes are car look attactive - you know like getting cheap carbon fibre wrap and gold plated accoutrements because you think they look classy.

    It was a great review as usual from you guys - gals - you know who you are! Definitely not keen on the stalkless Tesla Model 3 update. Used to love pulling down on the right stalk to go forward, upwards to go into reverse. Ditto with the indicators even though for me, an Australian, they were on the wrong side. The lack of regen for me is a serious drawback. I have an Atto 3 and it's absolutely pathetic. I wish it could just be software selectable and the driver could chose their preference, low or high regen - I mean proper high regen like Tesla offers, not high regen as offered by BYD currently.

    Even here in the US more cities are installing traffic circles or what some call roundabouts. And the lack of stalk in the Model 3 to signal a turn out of circle will become problematic even for us Yanks. What is Tesla thinking are they next going to get rid of the steering wheel and just use a joy stick like what was used in WW I aircraft.

    • @amperformance7998
      @amperformance7998 Рік тому +3

      Of course not. They wouldn't go so far as to replace the wheel with a joystick. That would be ridiculous. They will replace the wheel with a space on the touchscreen. Swipe-to-Steer!
      (Don't worry, they will also allow voice commands to steer if you don't like the touchscreen) ;)

      @colinnich Рік тому

      I believe the things your are installing in the US are still roundabouts. Traffic circles are things you had many years ago with different rules and were bad for accidents, hence the US's unjustified hatred of real roundabouts. Or so I saw on a UA-cam video anyway....

    • @DavidS-ev4er
      @DavidS-ev4er Рік тому

      Your right most of what is being installed here in the US are roundabouts but traffic circles are still being installed are in in use in the US. Though now they are controlled in many cases by traffic lights. Not sure what UA-cam video you are speaking of, but there is movement in many states including red states that are installing roundabouts, It's of course for safety, traffic calming in residential communities and the costs incurred for traffic lights. And while there is some vocal opposition, towns have found and stuck by roundabouts because of the savings and safety Just to show that while there is opposition one place one would not think would have the most roundabouts is a red state. in community of of Carmel Indiana.

    The most expensive part in an EV car is battery. BYD is producing battery itself. Therefore, it is able to provide a competitive price. Elon Musk also mentioned, if not because of the tariff imposed on this Chinese car by many countries. No other car makers can compete with BYD in term of price.

    • @napobg6842

      Tesla also produces its own batteries. Tesla has a bettery part in each of their factories producing cars. Not all are operational but they would be in the future. Tesla had their priority on the part that produces cars first but now the focus is on batteries more or less.

    Surprising result for me. I prefer the design of the Seal too. However, my driving experience was diametral. The Highland accerleration felt more direct and it felt way better driving over a mountain pass. From my point of view, the Highland was quieter and the seats felt also more comfortable. The soundsytem in the Highland was at least ten times better ( in the LR)
    Due to my driving experience, I would go for the Model 3 (nearly every other Review I saw comes to this conclusion)

      I totally agree. Hearing statements like "only marginally" when referring to its efficiency is irritating - as if they had to claw at justifying the result. It's well documented the tesla considerably more efficient (the seal is around 200kg heavier).
      I was super impressed when I checked the Seal out in person but it very much stank of plastic. That being said it was beautiful in a lot of ways (other than its tech/User Interface which is god awful.).
      As a first go, the Seal is impressive. The Tesla for me just feels far more refined (as it should be at this stage).

    Let’s get it right. A head up display is on the windscreen not a display in front of the driver, that’s called a dash. Did you throw the cars as a corner? A plush ride & 300 kegs normally add up to a car that doesn’t handle?

    Great review. Thank you!
    You mention that too much functionality is through the screens on both cars, and I agree.
    I haven't driven either of these cars, but I've driven a lot of previous model Model 3s and a lot of BYD Atto 3s.
    On those cars, I found that the lack of buttons was far more of a problem in the Tesla than in the BYD, even if you don't allow for the BYD having more non-screen controls. The BYD's voice recognition was excellent, so you could say, "turn off air conditioning, set fan speed to 2, and set temperature to 18 degrees" for example, and it would do it.
    The Tesla's voice control was hopeless. The Tesla showroom guy (this is in Australia) told me he could only get it to work if he put on an American accent. I have a northern English accent and it couldn't understand me, whereas I have no problem at all in the BYDs.
    I'd still prefer buttons. But the BYD offers a more usable alternative to the screen than the Tesla does.

    • @amperformance7998
      @amperformance7998 Рік тому +4

      I had a similar experience testing a MY in Australia. I tried to lower the temp setting as it was getting really warm under that roof, but couldn't find the temp adjustment on the screen. It kept taking me to the climate window where you can adjust everything except temp. I then tried voice commands (I despise voice commands even when they work) to lower the temp setting and the car navigation rerouted me to Islamabad. I had to pull over to reset the nav to take me back to the Tesla dealer.
      The kicker in all this is...I am an American! I have a midwestern accent, and it still misunderstood me.

      I'm hoping car manufacturers will eventually realise that massive touch screens are not the answer. They've seen Tesla do it, and they sold boat loads of them, so they must be doing it right! Right? No. As a consumer, it's not what we want. Buttons are the answer. Far more intuitive and safer while driving. I own a model 3 and find the touch screen to be great at a standstill. Like playing on an iPad. But while driving it's way too distracting, and easy to miss the button that you were trying to press. Same thing with the door handles. Elon Musk might be a rocket scientist, but most of my friends aren't, and are made to feel like idiots when they can't figure out how to get in my car. I don't want to have to give all my passengers a tutorial on how to get in and out of the car 🤣

    Yes, it takes a while to get used to it, but so does the gear shift when you are new to driving. After a few hours it becomes second nature, even on roundabouts.
    As far as I am aware ModelX and ModelS drivers have had those buttons for years and no one complained.
