EDIT: You BYD fanboys are hilarious 🤣 We never said it copied the Highland variant, we said it copied the Model 3 - and it very clearly did. The model 3 “bulge” has been there for years, since it first came out.

      Neither.
Both are made in the same country with questionable build quality and reliability issues, not to mention the batteries themselves.
If I had to choose with a gun pointing at my head, I would go with the Tesla only because there is marginally a better quality through oversight over the BYD and nothing more.
If the value proposition of all EVs were marketed significantly cheaper than the petrol variants considering the cost of living crisis and recession at the moment, I would go with a German or Japanese version every single time.

I drove a Seal Performance and a M3 Long Range dual motor and ended up ordering the Tesla. To me, the Tesla was just so much nicer to drive, quieter and smoother around town. Plus, I don't have to take the Tesla back to a dealer and get it serviced for $300-400 every 20K as you have to do with the BYD. I do about 50K a year and that made a big difference.

Test drove both. Picked the Seal. Coming from a European car i prefer the Seal interior. The ride quality and NVH is better in the seal for city driving due to it's softer suspension. Built quality is also better in the BYD. Silver tinted roof made a huge difference when i test drove this summer compared to the Highland. Not to mention parking sensors, stalks, gear shift, buttons, 360 camera, V2L, HUD just to name a few. BYD also does OTA just like the Tesla which you've failed to mention and it fixed most of the ADAS sensitivity issues now. I'm not a racing driver wannabe so it's a better family sedan compared to the highland.

Ok, I’m curious, it appears you chose the less safe car, less efficient, less rigid chassis bearing in mind Tesla is using gigacasting, less connected, less app control, no equiv autopilot, less processing power, no octovalve - reverse cycle air conditioning, less quiet. And shorter warranty by 2 years. BYD on my last check also has poor integration into home automation and charging/ peak/ off peak / solar and battery utilization.
BYD seal as far as I know doesn’t utilize aluminum panels and carts around a few hundred kilos of extra mass.
Tesla is also renowned for major software updates that have progressively added significant features year on year.
Is the BYD is tied to the dealership model still?
There’s a lot more to the decision making than styling alone. The seal is a nice car. Styling is and always will be subjective, but was the price comparably less to oversea the big ticket items from above? Or was safety and warranty less of a concern? I will put my money on BYD! I find the design to be a lot nicer.

If you bother spending time to understand the deeper aspects of what Tesla have been doing. They are not cost cutting. They are pushing further ahead than any other manufacturer has done in years. Unlike other manufacturers they also have the overheads of building car factories and production processes from the ground up. The fact the cars are as affordable as they are is a testament to their engineering and manufacturing processes. Why is a new company making the 4 safest cars in the world?
They are now paving the way to 48v low voltage architecture and steer by wire tech…. Watch everyone else follow. The same as casting chassis.
They are one of the few manufacturers that are regularly reducing the cost of their cars when everyone else is going up over a long term scale.
I’m blown away how you could make a statement like “getting less for the money”. You sir have not done your research and your decision making and justification is skin deep.

We ordered Seal. Testdrive of tesla was good, but quality of Teslas and that bad warranty made us buy Seal. Basic Coverage 80 000 km / 4 years vs. BYD Seal 6 years / 150,000 km. In Germany Tesla Model 3 Is the Car That Failed the Most in Germany's Mandatory Vehicle Inspection. Thats super bad for new car that costs that much. And here in Finland new cars first Mandatory Vehicle Inspection is done when its 4 years old. And many ppl including me wil go much more than 80 000km in 4 years so before first inspection warranty is already gone.. Teslas software might be good, but cars might not be best quality. @@tommylou77 Ok, I’m curious, it appears you chose the less safe car, less efficient, less rigid chassis bearing in mind Tesla is using gigacasting, less connected, less app control, no equiv autopilot, less processing power, no octovalve - reverse cycle air conditioning, less quiet.
Styling is and always will be subjective, but is the price comparably less to overlook the big ticket items from above? Or is safety and warranty less of a concern? Seems like the decision making is more on looks than tech, performace and safety…

People seem to associate complexity with interior buttons and miss even fine details like an extra 2 years warranty.
Thanks for adding to the conversation, interesting to compare costs in other countries. I guess it comes down to shipping and import duties/ taxes/ some teslas/Ev’s fall into luxury car tax in some counties as well.

Don't forget voice commands are available for many functions in a Tesla so you don't necessarily need to use the screen ("open glovebox", "I'm cold/hot" etc). Also iphone integration is very functional - you can stream music (and control using the steering wheel's scroll wheels), dictate text messages to send via your phone and so on. Also, changing settings like seat position etc are a once-only thing - they are saved with your profile and set automatically when the car recognises who you are (your phone is your key normally, not the card). Does the BYD do this? - Tom Gan's reviews seem to say you need to change some the car's settings before each drive?? (not seats obviously..).
Agree that it is a pity they neutered the sound system in the new Standard Range, otherwise (apart from acceleration) there isn't a lot of practical difference - the long range has a bigger battery and longer max range, but it's not recommended to charge more than 80% on a regular basis, while the standard range LFP battery can (and should) be charged to 100% as normal practice and in that case has much the same range as the long range.
Regarding using the card key to unlock the car - not the usual case: normally your phone is your key and the car automatically unlocks when you come into bluetooth range, and locks when you move away.

As the owner of a 2022 Model 3 RWD, I have recently tested driven both the Seal and Highland. In short I’m changing to the BYD.
To be honest, in everyday driving I didn’t notice that big a difference between my M3 and the new one. On the same drive, it was 10% more efficient but I really didn’t notice a better ride quality or that it was that much quieter. Maybe that is down to NZ’s coarse chip roads. The ventilation system is still just as poor as in my car, particularly on fresh air rather than recirculating. And now, as well as removing the radar and USS, they have done away with the steering column stalks. That, combined with no driver’s display, makes the (budget driven) “minimalist” interior a step too far.
When compared to the Seal, the Tesla interior looks and feels cheap. After 2 years the creaks and rattles have started to appear in my Tesla. I can’t comment on whether that would be evident in the Seal because they haven’t been around long enough.
The Seal is a better “Grand Tourer” in my opinion and because I drive in a relaxed manner, comfort is more important than sports car handling. The voice assistant is just as good at interpreting my Kiwi accent as the Tesla although it doesn’t include the option to use the juvenile language such as “open butt-hole” to open the charging flap (yes I know it’s manual on the BYD). What it does do though, thanks to wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto integration, is give access to your phone’s voice assistant through the steering wheel button (long press).
Tesla Superchargers are not as ubiquitous in NZ as other countries and they are the same (high) cost, so they are less of a factor in purchasing.

It is always politically safer to rate Tesla higher.🤣

    • @ibsn87
      @ibsn87 2 місяці тому

Is that because the BYD is a less safe car, less efficient, less rigid chassis bearing in mind Tesla is using gigacasting, less connected, less app control, no equiv autopilot, less processing power, no octovalve - reverse cycle air conditioning, less quiet. And shorter warranty by 2 years. BYD on my last check also has poor integration into home automation and charging/ peak/ off peak / solar and battery utilization. Users also don’t have access to seals API.
Styling is and always will be subjective, but is the price comparably less to overlook the big ticket items from above? Or is safety and warranty less of a concern? Seems like the decision making is more on looks than tech, performace and safety…
So, is it political. Or are others in denial because they don’t actually understand what’s really going on ? I think it’s the latter.

I invested in BYD two years ago, along with Uncle Warren and Grandpa Charlie (RIP Charlie, we miss you much!). It's one of my top-performing stocks in my long-term retirement IRA portfolio. BYD is the world's largest manufacturer of plug-in hybrid and electric vehicles, and they have a vertically integrated business model. There's more to the company than just vehicles - do some research and you'll see what I mean. The main thing holding the stock price back is the "buy American" agenda pushed by the political class and elites.

    • @HermanWillems
      @HermanWillems 2 місяці тому

Warren is selling his stock you know right? The problem is not BYD but the CPC communist party that is destroying private companies and supporting state owned companies in China. The problem in political world on earth is autocratic regimes where a few people control everything. This is not good.

1/The front of the byd taking inspiration from the refreshed model 3 was a flat lie. the seal came way before the new model 3 which has changed a lot. 2/Why placing the wireless charging there is a copy of the model 3? Is the Model 3 the first car to do that?NO, tesla introduced wireless charging in their cars only in 2018. Tesla's painting coming off is nothing new, that is why everyone does ppf otherwise it starts coming off in a few months. I do find the new model 3 interior nicer, but I pick the byd. driving these new Teslas with all these removed parts is a safety hazard: no indicator stalk, no gear shifter, no 360-degree camera, no sensors, no radars, no small screen etc, etc. Would y buy a car like that for your mother or grandmother? be serious

Please do not judge all Australians to this guy who.s comments are all over the place and inaccurate. I have driven both and the BYD seal is I’m sure a good car but not the best driving car and very busy inside. The M3 was a breathe of fresh air when driven even the minimalist was like finally no useless buttons you only use once to set up and then just gather dust! Also better tech in the M3.

A larger battery is fine. But the kWh/100 km consumption is higher in the BYD. Every kWh the car needs, has to be paid. So why not compare the cost of driving in AUD/100 km for both models? E.g. cost of charging at home and (average price of) fast charger per kWh.

  • @cmathieu
    @cmathieu Місяць тому

Great comparison review - I went for the Model 3 mainly for it's software tech - prefer not having a key fob and having to lock the car manually when walking away (unless BYD has added this feature since I last test drove it??) - having the car 'route plan' charging stops on long trips is another 'must have' for me as well as the Supercharger network - being able to charge at 11kw AC at home is another plus - very happy with my Model 3. That's not to say that the BYD Seal is bad car - far from it, it's just not the EV for me 😊

The main thing is saftey and software. Tesla will definitely always keep updating software. I have a 2019 model 3 and will get updates until the car dies.
With saftey its hard to beat Tesla. Look up the crash test reports in your country to see the saftey score. Here in the US it is 4.8/5.

The killer feature in Tesla you didn’t mention: Driver profiles. Seat position, ventilation settings, mirrors, steering wheel… Set it once and forget it. Who cares if you have to go to a menu to do it when you only need to do it once.
In our household where both adults drive regularly, doing the manual adjustments in pretty much any other care every single time is way more pain.
Why aren’t reviewers talking about this? Beats me…

Nice review, thoroughly enjoyed it. Just an observation from my perspective. To me the interior of a byd wins hands down over the Tesla. Not because it looks more normal but because of the presence of a HUD. I have a model Y, love the car, but i strongly maintain a HUD would have made it much better(and safer). Here in Melbourne, we have speed cameras every few km, and a speed tolerance of just 2kmph. Not having to take my eyes off the road to check my speed (or for navigation info) is just safer. Lastly, my model y squeaks and rattles, if the byd doesn't rattle, that's another win for the interior.
Overall i agree with you that the model 3 wins hands due to its superior driving dynamics

Interior space? The fundamental design principle that springs to mind with the BYD is “All emphasis is NO emphasis”. It looks way too busy, cluttered and that puts me off. The Tesla is so minimalist apart from the screens, it would take a while to adjust to.

BYD has built a wonderful EV standard: drive as EV but being built as sporty ICE car with much affordable price. Simplicity is good but the way Tesla define may keep new shoppers who are new to EV thinking that it’s only the act of cost cutting while remaining the higher price in the competitive EV market. Fanboys or tech savvy (or I should call “tech nerb”😂) could be still fascinating about every Tesla facelift regardless how it is built, but sooner when all other EV rivals keep refining their model in new facelift, boringly popular Tesla like Toyota should feel the risk of holding their loyalty fans-based position. I am sold for BYD Seal

The numberplate on the Seal needs to be changed, it's not a good marketing image to have a numberplate that says CRAP, I have seen a few of them driving around with blinkers malfunctioning, flashing very fast or almost not at all, not a good sign of a quality vehicle to be having electrical faults so early.

  • @YSA920

Have driven both of these. The Tesla is a really sporty drive, very responsive. Back seat tight, no cables, no roof cover but you have the Tesla supercharger network and ecosystem. The Seal is very quiet but a bit softly sprung in the front. It has V2L which would be great to have, charge during the day, power your house at night. The Seal colour range is much nicer.

I test drove both T3 and BYD. For me, I loved the performance BYD and the driving experience was much better overall than the T3. You say "conventional" - I say, "less basic". The T3 was way way too far minimalistic. To actually put 70k down on a car that has so little to excite me was just not an option. I think car reviewers dont truly, truly understand the feel of putting their own hard earned money down on a car enough. Each to their own though. The Seal is full of little intricacies, higher performance, cheaper, more quality, and turns heads.
