  • Lisa Gade reviews the Canon EOS 6D full frame DSLR camera with Canon L 24-105mm f/4 kit lens. This is Canon's most affordable full frame digital SLR camera, and it's priced similarly to the full frame entry level competition from Nikon and Sony while also being $1,400 less expensive than the venerable Canon EOS 5D Mark III. The 6D offers most of the goodies that you'll find on the 5D Mark III including high quality 1080p video recording, Canon's DIGIC 5+ image processor, mic in and HDMI out. It has a 20.2 MP sensor, a 3" 1MP rear display, 11 point autofocus and an SD card slot. The camera sells for around $1750 and the camera plus the pleasantly excellent L zoom lens sells for $2,299 to $2,499. Sample photos are at 17:36 .

    I love my 6D. I took the money I saved by not buying a 5DMark3 and bought some L lens to go with the 6D. And I use mine for birds in flight, too! Even at a slow 4.5 fps, it still does the job.

      @UltimateBMWfan 10 років тому +7

      You made a great call there. I have a 5D III, but if you don't have the money and have to either go 5D III with "cheaper" lenses or 6D and L lenses, L is better. Bodies will go out of date, lenses will last you a long long time.

    • @TalesOfWar
      @TalesOfWar 10 років тому +5

      UltimateBMWfan I always tell people this. Invest in the best glass you can, replace the body lol. With good lenses you'll be using them for decades, while in that time you'll go through half a dozen (maybe more) bodies, but the lenses will just produce better and better results thanks to the improvements in the sensors and processing etc.

      I made the same call and picked up the 6d. I will likely sell it when the 5d mark iv comes out as I feel this will likely make quite a large leap in quality.

      PTGearGuy I'd love to see Canon boost the megapixel count too in their next series of cameras. I know MP isn't everything, but it helps when cropping or blowing things up. They're being left behind recently in a few areas and this is one.

    its August 2020 and I just upgraded from a T6i to a 6d. WOW, what a difference :) and for $500.00, I can shoot sports, birding, anything. and the ISO, no other camera, even now can match its low noise capability. :)

    We love Lisa! It is now in Aug 2023 and my brother and I have been Lisa fans for several years now and we have each bought 3 generations of bargain used Levovo T series laptops on the back of her reviews. I've just bought myself a really nice used Canon 6Dmk1, (but this time I'm seeing her review AFTER buying it.) These brilliant cameras are now INSANELY cheap on the used market (mine is very clean & new-looking with a 15K shutter count and it was £360 U.K. (including 6 month warranty from MPB.) Go Lisa! 😍

    The 24-105 is nearly half price when you get it as a kit lens. If you are upgrading to a 6D, make sure you have good glass or you are just wasting your money. Put some nice prime lenses on it, like the 135 f/2, and it's fantastic.

    The sensor isn't where Lisa stated on either camera.
    The sensors are behind the mirror, and then behind the shutters of the cameras.
    What Lisa showed were the viewfinder surfaces, which have nothing to do with the camera sensors.

    • @mobiletechreview
      @mobiletechreview  10 років тому +2

      Correct: I didn't do a mirror lock up to expose the actual sensors. I totally forgot, probably because I hate to expose the sensor (clean freak).

    The sensor is behind the mirror on the Canon. The reflection that you see in the mirror is going up to the viewfinder, not the sensor. There is a setting to flip up the mirror to show the sensor.

    The Sony Alpha 65 is NOT a mirrorless camera. In fact you can clearly see the mirror in your video. Sony's C-Mount (also known as NEX-Mount) cameras like the NEX series or the A7/A7R are mirrorless. Also, the A7 is full frame and over 200$ cheaper than the Cannon 6D, if we're talking about affordable full-frames. Any chance of a review of one of them?..

    • @mobiletechreview

    i don't know if somebody commented on this but.. the mirror in the 6D does not shoot light at the sensor as you said. it shoots light onto the viewfinder. the sensor is actually located behind the mirror and is exposed once the mirror is up.

    I just bought this camera today. Never too late. It is still a great camera that gives beautiful results. If you not into super action photos this camera is the 5D Mark III. I see wedding and nature pros using this camera all the time. Bump up the kit lens and Macro, Telephoto, Wide Angle, Fixed Portrait and some special EFX lens and this camera will do things that will satisfy you in every detail. MOST photo fans can use the 1000.00 saving from the 5D to buy better lens. It's all good , most important just have fun!!!!!

    The A65 is not mirror-less, there is very clearly a mirror in there. It is however, a translucent mirror. The mirror doesn't flip up, but it is still used to feed info to the EVF. In my opinion, they are far worse than typical DLSRs because the have an EVF instead of OVF, and that translucent mirror takes about .5 to 1 whole stop of light from the sensor.

    Hello Lisa,
    I noticed this camera does not have a built-in flash. Is it an important negativity of the 6D in particular?
    I've been considering this camera and the 5D, Im leaning toward the 6D for the price. A quick response will help a lot.
    Thanks in advance!

    • @vivinbangera3382
      @vivinbangera3382 8 років тому

      +Anh Nguyen I wouldn't consider this as a big negative. You're getting an awesome camera for such a low price and if you take photography lessons, you would hear that on camera flash isn't needed because you can adjust the power it isn't that powerful anyway. Also, you can get quality flashes from yongnuo for less that $80 (don't know about other countries). I hope this helped and I hope Lisa helps you with a better answer!

      The 5D doesn't have a built-in flash either. Trust me, you DON'T want a built-in flash especially when you're using a bigger lens like 24-105 because the low placement of the built-in flash will cast a shadow of the lens. Moreover, any serious hobbyist would want a off-camera flash for professional results. Off-camera flash photography is beyond the scope of this post. Just Google it! :)

    For years folk told me go full frame but I refused point blank. However, I recently bought a Canon 5D SR and the difference really is night and day, as you say far better dynamic range and colours. far, far less noise to. From now on only full frame for me!

    Great video. A couple of corrections though: You confused the button/switch for live view and video mode. Also it's possible to trigger autofocus when recording video if you press 'AF-ON' button. However it's not very fast and smooth. And thirdly it's possible to record 60 fps in 720p resolution.

    I second the opinion at the end about the RX10 being a B cam. I use the 6D for video but I use a Sony AX100 4k camera with it. I export in 1080p. The AX100 is like the RX10 mark ii. Rx10 mark ii does 4k. Except the AX100 is in Camcorder format and isn't focused on photography. It can record over 30 minutes. Good camera to go with DSLR.

    I have it and I like it. The wifi comes in pretty handy at times. My biggest frustration though is that it does not have clean hdmi out, therefore an external recorder like a ninja can't be used. It seems there isn't a plan to enable this via firmware upgrade. Recently I actually have been using the SL1 more often. I plan to use the SL1 as my everyday walk around camera and the 6D for indoor studio work so I don't have to lug it around. When your physical space is limited and there are low light conditions the full - frame really makes a difference.

    Strictly speaking, a larger sensor draws more light, yet doesn't make the depth of field "better"-apparently meaning "shallower". Rather, to attain a given field of view and subject framing, a larger sensor requires a lens of longer focal length. And a lens of longer focal length is what shrinks the depth of field-better, if one wants it shallower. For discussion and demonstration, see Lee Morris, "No, larger sensors do not produce shallower depth of field", Fstoppers, 31 May 2018.

    Hello! I have a doubt... Im thinking in buying a new camera and I am between the 70d and the 6d WAIT! before all of you just bombard me with how the 6d is much better... I already thought about all the specifications of both cameras. The pros of the 6D are obvious, full frame, GPS, magnesium alloy body, etc, but the 70D has some key features that keep me thinking about it. Firstly you should know that, I film a lot with the camera and the moving screen and the new autofocus system of the 70D are one of those specifications that I think may be decisive in choosing between one or the other. Finally, the price, and I know this is obvious, but I am not a professional photographer (although i wanna be one) and my budget is limited, and picking the 6D its a lot of money for me, so, considering that one is 600€ cheaper, which one do you think I should go for?

      Hi, David! I'm thinking of doing the exact same upgrade from apsc to full frame, from 7D to 6D. Is the difference in image quality that big? Did you get used to the controls on the 6D, given the fact that they are a bit different than the controls on the 7D? Just recently I read an article written by someone who upgraded from 7D to 6D and was very unhappy, mostly because 7D is (was) a high end apsc, while the 6D is an entry level full frame and it lacks some of the buttons and functions. It got me confused. Thank you very much!

    Hey Lisa, Great review I am really interested in this camera over the 5D3 because it's so expensive - especially where I am, I just wanted to know if the 24-105mm comes with lens hood when you get it as a kit lens or does that have to be purchased separately? I have really grown attached to the idea behind this camera with all its wifi and gps goodness and I think that this would do just fine for me as a student hoping to go into some kind of film or photography in the future. I currently have a 650D which I use to shoot at the track as a hobby but i'm really dying with all its limitations as well as the limitations of my 3 kit lens (excluding my 50ml f/1.8 which I think is good enough and I won't need the f/1.4 any time soon) because of the fact that they aren't stabilised, they aren't very sharp and their F-Stops are appalling in my opinion for getting any kind of bokeh. Any way all that aside I loved the review and hope to see many more soon :)

I am seriously thinking about purchasing 6D for better image quality and video but most of all for my 5 year old and his tennis, soccer, and portraits. My question could I be just as satisfy with a cheaper camera like 60D or 7D with of course the 24-105 lens for sports and portraits and video? Thank you so much.

    • @Thalestin
      @Thalestin 10 років тому

      Not sure if you got a response yet but I thought id add :). For sports, I would wait for the 7d mark II which will be out in a month or so. If you still want a 7d they will be real cheap when that comes out. For sports it is important to have the speed and focus that the 6d doesnt have. It would likely be fine for a small kiddy though. The 70d is also quite a nice piece of kit as well...it is more suited to video but has the smaller sensor size. If you do not have any full frame lenses yet another option is the new nikon d750. It is fairly fast and also does decent video.

      Akash Singh That isn't true at all, infact it is silly.
      Full frame offers better low light (bigger sensor), potential for wider angle lenses (because there is no crop factor) better ISO sensitivity & can get a more shallow depth of field & generally higher quality images (Cleaner).
      Having said that my camera are APS-C sensor cameras, they do fine for what i do, but I don't fool myself into thinking it can beat a full frame sensor.
      The bigger the sensor typically the slower the AF, so Micro 4/3rds generally kicks as in fast AF.
      It just depends on what you want to do, landscape photographer would ideally want full frame, same as night photographer.
      Sports photographers can use APS-C, the crop can help them.
      Micro 4/3rds can be great for general photography, street stuff if you want, in good lighting.
      Mirrorless camera are starting to go full frame, so smaller bodies with the best sensors.

    Hi Lisa, Great Review I am a beginner photographer looking to buy my first Canon camera I like the 70 D because my daughter plays volleyball but I also like the 6D the full frame camera any suggestions would help. Thank you

      Depends first on your budget. The 70D is a plenty nice camera, but I find the 6D with a good lens takes even better photos.

    "See this is a mirrorless design" proceeds to remove lense and show everyone the mirror.

      That doesn't exists (or your definition of it) and it doesn't make sense. It's just a full frame DSLR. And yes it has a mirror. Fast way to spot this is to put it off and look trough the viewfinder.
      Also when making a picture, it gets blacked out.
      This is also the camera I'm using.
      And a bridge camera is a camera that's between a point and shoot and a SLR. They are useless cameras and the d6 isn't.

      I couldn’t watch the entire video or one minute of the video (comments showed that’s a bad review) and I thought you were talking about the 6d. My bad for that.
      Now I think of it, I’m happy that I didn’t watch the entire video. Btw, that Sony isn’t a bridge camera...

      You would be much better off with a Canon T3i. It's much cheaper than the camera in this video but is better for the recording that you want to do.
