    I own a 6D, and I love it, the Wifi, is very helpful, especially when some clients want a sample of their photos right away when there's no computer around. Same processor, same image quality, and lighter. All of the buttons are on the right side of the camera so I can use it with one hand. And and about the video MOIRE problem, I will confess that video is better on the 5DIII because of the anti-aliasing, but theirs a workaround for the 6D. You can have your own user settings for video and, this will decrease your moire so it won't show up, and here it is for stills and video:
    Keep the shutter at 1/50 for 24fps and 1/60 for 30fps.
    •Turn off highlight tone priority and noise reduction
    •Use ISO's in multiples of 160, they produce the least noise
    •Use a flat picture profile, I'd recommend Neutral with:
    Sharpness at 0 (all the way down)
    Contrast at -2 to -4
    Saturation at -2 to -4
    This works for me, and saved me a ton of money. Hope this helps

    6D's low light performance is way better than the 5D III. This video is superb, nicely made, but damn, go and check those dozens of video ISO comparisons on YT, you'll understand that the 6D has 0 banding noise at 25,600, while the Mk III suffers even from ISO 6400. The 6D has the best sensor in the hole Canon catalog. If you don't believe me, I'll provide a few links. If low light performance is a priority for you (like me) then go with the 6D, it murders every other Canon ever made.

    @asad129 10 років тому +14

    Sorry, there's a fair bit of misinformation here when you talk about moire. Both the 5D-III and the 6D have anti-aliasing filters. They have to in order to avoid moire issues at the native sensor resolution. The reason the 5DIII exhibits less moire is that it bins pixels together in order to generate lower-resolution images for video while the 6D simply samples a fraction of the lines. It's this low-spatial-frequency sampling of an image with high spatial frequencies that causes the aliasing/moire. The pixel binning on the 5D-III acts as a low pass filter, mimicking the effect of an AA filter and reducing moire.
    If the 5D-III really had an AA filter that was effective for video use, it would have an effective resolution for still photography at the native sensor resolution of only about TWO megapixels (the equivalent of HD video resolution).

    I really like Your videos cause they are full "real-life" examples! No 25k ISO comparison which are just useless in any Canon dslrs, no ultra-super-detailed examples - just very good overall view. I really like that. Thanks and keep going!

    I am so tired of my t3i, and I want to step up to a 5D Mark III. I do quite a bit of birding, but I also love scenery. For some reason, I've never been much of a people photographer. I really liked this video, and the aliasing problems are what really makes me want to ditch the t3i and got for the Mark III. Thanks Dave!

    The Mark III has a silent mode when shooting in bursts, so it's fine for wedding. Take another look at that. And there is a lot more red on portrait mode with the 5D, or a lot more yellow on the 6D.

    I've only gotten to the picture modes so far but it looks like to me that the 6D tends to run a bit more Green/Orange and the 5D Mark III tends to have stronger Reds/Magentas. Also, in the black and white, the 6D almost looks like there is an Orange filter on. The skin is smoothed out and the spotting on the face has definitely evened out.

    I own both cams, 6d perfect for low light work and landscape as it performs better with high ISO than the 5D mk3. If you shoot fast moving subjects e.g. sport journalism etc then go for the 5D mk3 as it has more AF points and a higher burst rate, other than that, they are both great and sharp full frame cameras, I'm very happy with both :)

    I'm just giving a review and not complaining about Canon. Great entry camera or experienced photographer as a 2nd. Almost similar results to the 5d Mark III. Hard to make it an apples and oranges comparison. I may not care to much for the Wi-Fi part since it may only have a 4 foot reach approximately reach. These bells and whistles can be enhances by Canon or 3rd party add on products. Firmware update - Corrects most but some still some crazy focusing at times compared to the slow.

    +1 to Alexander. APS-C and 35MM are two different formats, just as medium format and large formats are different. On my TLR, 50MM is wide-angled, on my 35MM film camera it's standard and on my 60D it is telephoto.

    Very nice and honest review. I wanted a 5D3 for SO long but when B&H had a holiday sale last year for the 6D with the upgraded 24-105 f/4L lens at $1700 I had to jump on it. I originally thought maybe I was "settling" for the 6D and would still have 5D3 envy. But the fact I don't really shoot video and primarily shoot landscapes, portraits, astrophotography, long exposure and street/urban I think the 6D is amazing and for that kind of work I'm not missing anything by not having a 5D3. I'm really interested to see what Canon comes up with for a 6D2 which is predicted for 2017.

    I had my eyes set on a 6D for a while but this video just cemented which camera Im getting. Had a 40D for a few years and looking to upgrade and thought 6D will be worthy upgrade. Only downside for me is I can only use 50mm lense with 6D and the other 2 lenses well I will have to sell. I shoot lot of pics of the cars on a car cruises so low light performance is a must and it seems 6D trumps in areas that are important for my shooting style plus I really do not like or want to use flash at all, I mean I hate using flash. Video is awesome one of the best down to earth comparisons, well done.

    Great review. My experience has taught me one thing. I have come to the conclusion that if you are wanting to produce video dont consider a dslr. No matter how much you spend on a dslr you they dont compete with a dedicated video camera. The Panasonic gh5 is the best dslr for video but there is still a leap to be made when it comes to sound and other video features. The very best Canon is really only a stills camera. But as I am interested in buy a full frame camera for photos I found your comparison very informative.

    On my Mac at 1080p, there is a lot of differences Dave. At 3:53 the 5D III is a bit sharper and the colors are much clearer (probably what is called dynamic rage, I don't know) and the tree is much crispier to. And at 4:42 the 6D is much much sharper, but it's probably because the 5D was out of focus. That seams obvious to me.
    I have the 60D and I really wish I had the 5D III. That's the real think for video. But so expensive for me.

EVERY review I found was about how good the cameras were at taking stills, which to be honest, I saw no difference, other than the 6D being much cheaper... Until I came across this review... Your pointing out of the headphone input and the anti-aliasing (among other things) may have swayed me towards the 5D. It does cost a lot more, but for film making, that anti-aliasing is a must! Not to mention much more expensive since (based from what I heard) it is much more complicated to process Carbon Fiber and molding it is a little bit trickier than what we think it is. Not to mention that if it is too thin, it could even be as weak as plastic and not stronger than magnesium.

    You listed the noise as a reason to choose the 6d unfortunately you neglected to use the burst silent mode for the 5d mark III if you go to the menu for your shooting mode its the one with the s beside it. with this enabled it allows for very quiet use at about the same frame rate as the 6D There were a host of other features that were neglected to mention as well. most notably is the cross focus you were referring to well under certain menu options for the mark3 it actually makes all 5 of the center horizontal row utilize the 4 cross focus feature had this been enabled at the time of your test you would have found that you could have gained the exact same results from the mark 3 but with greater ease as you would have only had to hit the mark anywhere on the horizontal row top to bottom to obtain focus. I completely understand the oversight on these issues because without hours of training they could easily be overlooked. I don't own either though and am only doing research into the one I should buy and don't consider myself qualified to do a review and I know this HMMMMM just kidding I love the videos keep up the good work GOD BLESS YOU

      He neglected nothing. He stated the center cross point for the canon 6d is more sensitive than that of the mark iii, and it is... +-3 vs +-2. How many cross points a camera has deals nothing with the sensitivity of said cross points. As for the shooting noise, how do you know he neglected to use the silent burst mode? Maybe he was referring to just the normal shooting mode on both cameras... or perhaps he was referring to the silent shooting mode - on BOTH cameras. That being said, I own a 6d and it is very quiet... smooth too. On my camera, the "silent" mode is only slightly quieter and it does slow the burst rate.

    I understand. But Dave is comparing two devices, meant for two different situations. The 5DIII is much more allround and indeed better then the 6D on a lot of points, but the 6D wasnt meant to film as serious as the 5DIII. The 6D is good for the audience it was made for: the semi pro amateur that wants more then a cropped device and go further with still life, landscape and portrait. The 5DIII is film and action orientated I believe.

    Thanks Dave. I'm going for my first full frame and have been very frustrated on whether I should spend the extra. I think the 6D will suffice. I primarily do Landscape and Music photography. Your video helped a lot!

    Great comprehensive review. Love the swipe comparisons! One minor feedback point. When you're showing the 'up down' comparison swipe on the latitude comparison on a landscape photo, can you do a 'left right' swipe instead? In that way I can more easily see the difference between cameras as a lot of the time I'm seeing the sky from one camera and the green landscape from the second camera.
    Keep up the good work!

    Yep good old morie and allising that's what stopped me from getting the 6D. Great for stills though.

    Great review Dave! Oh and you forgot about the silent shutter mode on the 5d Mark III. It does lower the FPS but the noise reduction is awesome.

    Thank you, I bought the 6 D, business is tough and I am excited to test wifi potential. Specially if my assistant pick images simultaneously during a shoot and have a proof ready for my clients following the shoot.

    I was pretty set on the 6D but now you educated me on aliasing and moire! DOH! Now I can't stop seeing them in shots....ignorance is bliss!

    I have almost never used any other focusing point than the one in the middle. It's always been weird to me when people complain about "too few" focusing points. Maybe it's just me.

    • @almo8989
      @almo8989 10 років тому +1

      I feel the same way. I've had an entry level DSLR for many years and learned to focus using the middle and then re compose the shot. Not much of a nuisance if any to me. I suppose for videos and stuff people want better AF. I ended up getting the 6D to upgrade and I love it. I couldn't justify spending more money on the 5D Mark III just for the better AF points.

      Nathan C Professional video producers usually use manual focus anyways--for the greater control over the feature. I also like the center point focus better too and I do a lot of sports photography.

      Depending on what kind of photography you do , choosing a focus point that is in line and parallel with what you want to be in focus is important as long as you believe that light travels in straight lines...

      I have no idea what you're trying to say. Probably because of my poor comprehensions of English. Its not my native language.
      What I do, is focus with the middle point on whatever I want to have in focus and then recomposing the shot before shooting.

    • @tscholent
      @tscholent 9 років тому +1

      Eirik Havre Nothing wrong with that method. If you do use your centre focus point and recompose be aware of large apertures and short distances between camera and subject.

    Dave, thank you for such an informative and comprehensive review of both cameras. I am trying to decide as to which one I should choose, and have to admit, I like the Mark III with dual cards. I did subscribe, again, thanks for the time and effort here.

    Pulling focus and the need for focus pullers had been the biggest drawback for DSLR's if used for serious videography, the latest camcorders even the consumer models have an edge over most DSLR's in stability, frame rates and smooth focus transitions. and lower price. If they would only put the bit rates up and use better codecs they would be the clear winners.

    I think Canon will have much better dynamic range with the next gen of their cameras. The Canon C300 has great dynamic range and that sensor was made for video only. Canon is now in the middle of trying to keep the photographers and video people all happy. I will give Canon a lot of credit they are the only company with a amazing aliasing moire filter in the camera right on the sensor.
    Hopefully nextgen everything will even out with Canon.

    Great review! I ending up bugging the 5d3 a few months back and don't regret it a bit. The 6d has major moire problems in my opinion! Also if you watch Philip blond review on the 5d3 he has found it takes to sharpening very well and the 6d doesn't. Yo can drastically improve the image on the 5d3 with a little sharpening. Its worth the money to me!

  • @mp4podcastDOTcom

    Dave you should review the Caprock filter for aliasing and moire just Google "Caprock filter" the good thing about these filters is you buy them one time and they can work on all cameras.

    For the T3i you would maybe want a lens like the Tokina 11-16mm. The 11mm on a crop sensor camera like your T3i is a wide angle similar to 18mm on a full frame camera like the 5d.
