The Canon 6D is the PERFECT camera except for one fatal flaw. If you can live with this fatal flaw than this could be the camera for you. Before I get into what this flaw is lets take a deeper look at the camera and its functions as well as how it performed in real world shooting situations. "Real World Review" TM
As many of you know I like to do real world shooting tests when I am reviewing gear. This means no shooting charts or over analyzing unimportant features. This also means I post the FULL RES exported files for you to review and make your own decisions on image quality. Be sure to watch the video above as I cover certain topics that I may not cover below in the written review.
Lets now take a look at the camera itself, how it feels. This camera feels great in the hands when you are shooting horizontically. I say that because any time you try and shoot vertical without a grip any camera will feel awkward. The rubber coating on the body makes it feel like you wont drop it and the build quality seems to feel very sturdy. As far as how it feels when your shooting, it feels just fine and people with small or large hands shouldn't have much of a problem handling this body. People with much larger hands should consider picking up the battery grip for added confort.

Hey Guys,
I recently picked one of these 6Ds - body only. Do not fool yourself thinking that it only has 1 cross type focus.
All i can say is WOW!!! It is sharp and you will going to love it.
Just thought to share it with you :d
Thanks!!!
I shoot hockey for a pro hockey team here in Denmark using the 6D with the canon 70-200 f2,8. And i must say that the focus is okay really, i dont have any problems really, i am also shooting at the player bench the whole game because i am the team photographer but other then that, it works amazing!
I think for sports it did fantastic considering this is not a sports suited camera.
I love video reviews where it is so easy to hang on to every word and asimulate data. Great job Jared. Looking to replace my aging 5D classic for street portraiture
thanks for the review.. i went back and forth over the last few weeks prior to purchasing a d600.. i still wanted to see your review.. some of the points you mentioned I agree on and it helped my decision in going with the nikon.. thanks again.. glad I found your site and videos.. thx
I think the focus problems happened because he used the Sigma lens, if he had used the Canon 70-200 f /2.8 is 2 the focus would be perfect
Wait what?
I agree, Sigma has had focus issues with Canon cameras because they’re essentially reversed engineered and that’s never perfect.
I think what Jared did was practical. Not everyone can afford a full-frame Canon DSLR and mount a Canon lens on it. The majority of us will opt for a hybrid. I also appreciate his honesty in telling the world that this is not the best camera to auto-focus in low light. I read plenty of reviews before I purchased my Canon 6D. All of them literally sang songs about this camera's ability to focus in low light. After buying the camera and using it with Canon's latest 24-70mm L2 lens, I discovered that that was simply not true. There were more misses than hits. And only the centre focusing point did any good at all. Using the other option, was an exercise in futility. The only consolation for me is that I will seldom require to shoot in almost or complete darkness.
I find Jared's review of this camera to be informative, down to earth, fair, honest and practical. Thanks Jared.
Of course the center point is the only one working in low light since it is the only one that is cross-typed. The praises on the 6D's ability to focus are based on that center point that can read up to -3EV, when the 5DIII has only -2EV. If you or Jared can't get any good results, of course it must be the camera's fault, not your lack of knowledge and understanding of how a camera works.
Behram Cooper I was in the exact same boat as you Behram. I ended up selling the 6d with all my canon gear and went back to Nikon. Got a D600/D610 and couldn't be happier. Not until you end up using both can you possibly appreciate what the Nikon brings to the table.
Behram Cooper But what glass was he using on this test??
Thank you so much, Jared. Been waiting for this. Your reviews are truly the best.
I use the tripod adapter for gopro than a cold show thing to go into my camera. Il take a picture sometime.
I love your reviews man! theyre very informative and useful. im going back and forth between the 6d and the d600 right now and these help a lot.
I know you probably won’t see this but I need help! When I get my 6D, for everyday photography like landscape or portraits, will I want to shoot raw??? Can I do both at the same time?
i shoot w a 70d right now. i want to shoot portraits such as lifestyle, weddings etc. but i also want to do street photography and sports aka fast moving things. would it be worth it?
The 5D MKIII is outdated? You sure about that?
Do you think this 6D + the new sigma 85mm 1.4 ART is a good combo for still portraits? Specifically street portraits and general street photography? I'm asking because I have them both on order and have not been shipped so I still have 2 days to cancel according to the seller.
I'm considering replacing/upgrading from my 60d to this. I've got a 24-70 f2.8 mk1 & a 70-200 f2.8 is mkii does the 6d perform well with these lenses? I know my 24-70 isn't quite as good as the much newer mkii.
I think ill be alright with the 6D, i currently shoot with a t4i and i find that 90% of the time i only use the center point. im doing the jump to FF and this camera has a lot of the features i want, if i had the money of course i would skip to the 5d3.
When i focus on the face off a player out on the ice, the face gets soooo grainy!! Any tips/solution? I have the 6D
I have a Canon 6d and have to agree with Jessica in that the focusing is not that bad. I shot a low light concert with just one light on stage and I was really impressed with the shots. I did not feel I had to work hard at all to get those shots and could really take time to compose my shots. So far...I'm loving this camera!
when you say it was hard to focus...what does that mean exactly? Did you use manually selected point other than center and it wouldn't focus or did you have AF on auto and it was hunting? how was the center point? The way you are describing it I still don't know if this camera is suitable for what I do which are weddings. Coming from 5D MII, ready for new body and 6D is just a crazy good deal right now with one awesome sensor.
THANK YOU for such a good real world review of this. I've been wrestling with whether or not I want a 70D or a 6D as my first DSLR camera and this was a big help.
That is interesting about sending photos right to the desk by clicking and sending, that is cool. If you can live with the autofocus than sure. I liked this camera.
All of this stuff I really dont know much about. I think my shutter speed was around 1/50th. Im not a film maker, just picking up bits and pieces here and there on that stuff.
just curious, in your opinion will this camera be suitable for landscape photography?
Great review, thanks. Much more informative than most review i've seen out there. keep it up.
Thank you, i take pride in it.
Now THIS is a review! Well done Fro!
I went back to the nikon video and honestly i bet no one could tell the difference between the two. And thats really the thing, all that matters is you capture the moment. It doesnt matter if it was the nikon or the canon.
being that I was shooting RAW plus jpeg fine that slowed it down.
Does this camera still woth it as a first full frame DSLR in 2019?
I just picked one up, it's still phenomenal for under $500
Great review, sounds (and looks) very fair. Thank you for doing the action shots as the AF system is my major concern about the 6D. Now I'm going to get one, got the right t-shirt already :-)
Hey Jared I just bought your beginners guide and it helped me out tremendously. Thank you fro!!!!
How do you know what ISO to choose? Just from test shots or do you learn overtime?
I love your reviews!!!! Very through detailed and informative
Hey Fro! Do you think 6D is still good full frame DSLR in 2020 as a entry cam? 🤪
Why did you shoot thru the glass you could go up higher but I dont have to wait the images were bad.
take a look at the settings I used for the hockey that should answer the question.
Awesome review! I ordered mine last night. I have a 550D right now but can't wait to get this!
why he desnt have any colornoise at the high iso in the raw files ???
Not a fan boy for any company and can take or leave some of your videos but I really appreciate how real and honest you were in this review in taking the camera through its paces... Thanks for helping with my own decision in which full frame to invest in as a advanced enthusiast.
what was your camera calibration panel set to? because there seems to be major color rendition difference beteen jpgs and raw files. i lvoe the canon jpg color but hate how recent cameras have too much noise reduction applied that doesnt look good or natural. i actually have nikon dslr and through DNG profile editor set my nikon files to look like canon :)
Great review! I honestly think this will be what pushes me up from my 50d to go full frame. I can't help but to think that some of your focusing issues could have been caused by shooting behind the glass wall though. Those things can be tore up in places. The one cross type is a bummer, but I normally focus my shots at the center spot and then recompose before taking the shot. Again.... great review!
I am ready to go full frame from D7000, so D600 looks familiar to me but I also see great things on Canon 6D. I sold all my dx lenses to start a new lineup. Which one would you recommend. I take photos as a hobby, from landscape to portraits and weddings.
thanks for the long and unbiased review jared, I liked it very much...
yup, or something like a 39 point 20 cross type or something. Not the best of the best but something good still.
Jared - How did you like the lightweight when shooting with this for a long time (several hrs)? Would you use this instead of a heavier all-pro heavy camera when you need to shoot a long time?
Can you test it out in daylight to see if the autofocus tracks better and can you test it with a OEM Canon L lens of any range instead to really test it accurately as its know Canon lenses and bodies talk to each other and work best when paired together as opposed to using another brand of lens. Thanks
I will have to try tricking the camera by adjusting to back-focus a little, since we aim on to chest, the face could be right on then. Or maybe someone else has already tried it?
I had actually been playing with the 6d center point focus with the ai servo in store and didn't think it was too bad with people walking by, but I wanted to see what people thought with real action. I'm glad to see that you were thorough and even used the center point focus to get the best shots and see how it did in the best settings. Thanks!
is there anything wrong with using continuous focus for still subjects?? Why not use continuous focus all the time?
It wasnt an error, when I made the video the prices were the same.
is focusing bad on all focusing spots or just all of them but the middle cross type?
Awesome review Jared!
Waiting to see the comparison with the D600.
getting this tomorrow. upgrading from my 5d mark II. thanks for the video man
I bought the 6D in March 2014. I chose to get another lens rather than going with the 5D Mk3 and I am happy with my decision. Overall I love the camera (I have had the XTi, 1D Mk2N, 5D, 50D, 7D, T2i) however the AF system isn't the greatest. Yes it locks on in ultra-low light, but I find I have a much lower in focus hit rate than I did on the 5D, 50D or the 7D. I am shooting about 2500 pictures a month at events, concerts, portraits, and a few landscapes. I wish the other 10 AF points would have been cross type or even capable down to 2.8.
The high ISO sensor is the real gem. As w/ Jared,. I have gotten usable shots at 25600, and coming from a 5D this is amazing, now I can shoot w/o a speedlight in near darkness at a nightclub, so I don't bother the patrons.
Overall I give it an 9/10.
About the video feature on the 6D and the D600, woldn´t the clean hdmi out build into the D600 be an big plus over the 60D?
Thanks Jared, lovely review
For the longest time i was considering the Sigma OS 70-200 2.8. Is it true though that its soft at 2.8 and sharpest at 4.0? If so it would make little to no sense since im using the 24-105 F4.
That would have been a better test for how you would use a camera. Look at the portrait of the goalie on the bench, thats spot on and amazing. If a camera can handle ice hockey it can handle anything.
6D blows D600 away in low light. that single cross-type sensor will still find focus when light so low that D600 cant find focus. it even beats 5D3.
also "back in the day" sports photogs were doing more with less, i think they just getting spoiled with the highend, can match with low-end just have to work a lil harder ;p
Jared got some good shots of the hockey game, think he would see more and better shots with use, you learn what works and what doesnt, go with the cameras strengths and try to stay away from its weaknesses ;)
What you recommend from moving from Rebel camera? Canon 6D or Canon5D Mark II? I shoot food and trains. Do you think I should just get the Mark III? By the way great video.
Can you rent any other Canon L lens that is available to rent to try it out?
Excellent review, you did say and show what the camera can do. and coming from Nikon shooter. is great to see people that are impartial like you are on this review.
great review
correct.
Anyone know if this is good enough for outdoors action, adventure video filming on a glidecam?
I like thefullframe and using it with a 24 105 would be alot better than my 60D and still better quality video than the 70D 7D etc... thoughts?
Hi,
What lens do you recommend for sport?
i had the same issue i went for the 6D and honestly i love the the low light performance and image quality i still use my 7d but more for speed you will notice the difference in the speed of the af and the top plat being polycarbanate and the buttons feel less resistant than the 7d but after a while i believe you will love it
Excellent review! I have a couple of questions:
1) Does the Canon 6D problem of what "band" matrix when shooting at ISO 400 and the shutter speed to 1/60? On my 5D Mark 2 is the problem that is very annoying me, I would like to know about the Canon 6D, he has this problem?
Hey Jared since you borrowed a lens for the review, how come you didn't borrow something like the Canon 70-200mm 2.8 IS?
I dont own any of it and did not have any at my disposal. With that said there is absolutely nothing wrong with the Sigm 70-200 2.8 OS.
Canon knows there is an issue with the auto focus.
2) Highly visible noise when you shoot at ISO 6D for example 4-5000 in the gym or in other places where there is little light, and what it is the business value in 6D ISO?
I'd just like to see if it would focus better with a Canon lens...
btw - do you like that 16-35 f/2.8?
Did u used gopro hero in this video from 2:30 to 4:30? if yes, how u mout it?
you said at the start that it was filmed using only the 6D, but i thought that you posted to your facebook page that you used Go Pro 3's?
How do i get to fronosphotos or whatever dot come? Can you spell it out on the info?
do you happen to know the name of the Matisyahu song? I really like that beat.
Um , the 6D was not built for the sports shooter to begin with . Just saying , not sure why you chose this event as review . Althought , i have seen great sports shot with 5D 2 with nine focus points , One more note. Focus on the eyes at all times. Overall good review though.
Focus on the eye makes no sense when the focal plane covers the body anyway.. For portraits absolutely nail the eye, for sports you focus on the chest.
Given that the prices for the 5Dmkii are coming down, would you suggest that over the 6D?
Great review. Awesome Contra reference!
Hi Jared,
Does the focusing problem still occur when using the 16-35 you mentioned you had brought along? I'm having similar issues when using third party lenses, except my camera is a 600D :).
Regards,
hey, thank you very much for this nice and complete review.
I sold 1 year ago all my DSLR equipment and bought a NEX7 equipment, now i´m needing again all the capabilities of a DSLR. I will buy one of those cameras, D600 or 6D, not doing sports or action pictures. What do you recommend to me mainly for studio, portraits and social works? I have to say that i like more the body layout of the canon and im scare about the dust and oil issues of the Nikon. But ive come concerns about the AF of the6
thank you.
this went from camera review to "I SHOOT RAW!" lol
How sharp is the sigma compared to the nikon ( nikkor 70-200 f2.8) ? thinking about getting the d600 and the sigma lens. What do you think ? nice video :)
I personally ONLY use the center focusing point on any of my cameras. I'll point at what I want focused, hold the shutter button half way down to get the focus, then frame my shot. This works for me on everything but the fastest moving subjects. Even if I use a tripod I'll use this method except move the AF switch to M after I obtain focus so the focus doesn't change and I can take multiple shots.
+Kory Easterday Every heard of Back Button Focusing? seems like you might make use of it :)
+Fai27 I remember doing that on my 70D and stopped using it. If I remember correctly it was because it made my thumb uncomfortable if I used it very long. I might give it another shot with the 6D though, thanks for the idea!
+Kory Easterday you don't have to keep Holding the back button to keep focus like the shutter button. Just Focus and let go, it will stay at that focus until you refocus or move the camera/subject
Same here, also shoot sports with my 1D like this, I aim for focus and recomposite directly. Never failed on me for sports, weddings etc. Do not get the fuss about the 3 million focus points, for me it works like shit. Tech heads worry about the focus points in CT, photographers care about their images.
Jared, I'm beginning to use 6D and learning to do video on it.
Btw, what software do you use to compile and edit all the videos to make this video?
Thank you Jared.
Manual mode ? Need much exposure changes on computer ?
Loving the top gear theme in the beginning!
Great review ! Do you think a 6D is a 5DIII 'light' ? Is spending 1000 euro's more and buying a 5DIII a good idea ?
That second close up of the Goalie was bananas! :D
The gopro was used for the first person perspective.
All i can tell you is I used the camera in low light and had issues. Thats really how I base my reviews.
Hello Jared, first meant for their videos are excellent! I'm considering getting a Full frame, I use the 60D and most of the time I work with photography of events and concerts. I thought of the 6D, but I saw that I have the same problem I have with the 60D focus points. I'm in a cruel doubt, because I can not afford to buy a MarkIII, but from what I read the MarkII also have this problem with the focus, or is it better than the 6D? I would love your opinion, thank you!
don't u think that the out of focus issue is contributed by the Sigma glass u put on it rather the camera itself?
I bought this camera about a month ago. I shoot just about everything other than action. It may still be Canon's best body for everything other than action. There is a reason most astrophotography on Canon bodies come from a 6D. Real Estate photography...wifi shutter control to smartphone, yup. Portraits, may still be best Canon portrait body for low light.
+Ryan Luna 5dsr is better than 6d on portraits
wow Jared. I wishI found your reviews sooner. This review is incredible. Thank you!
I want this camera but.....that crosstype focus sounds like a bummer. I would love to see how this ocmpare to the 5diii
is the 6d mark ii better than the 6d? or the opposite?
I, too, am an owner of T2i. I've been eying this cam ever since I heard about it. What do you think of the difference in terms of picture quality between the two? Also, what lenses do own and which one is your favorite?
Jared, you were saying you found it personally hard to focus in low light . the cross type is - 3EV so i am assuming that did nothing to improve the focus in low light situations ?
love your reviews
I know this is an old video but I was wondering if you had choice between D750 and 5DM3 for studio photos and action sports which one would you use?
M D A M A D 5d
alealeale ale on what grounds?
Zhida Zhou Personal Preference.
alealeale ale Well obviously, but you should still explain why you like it better.
which one are the best zoom lenses for canon 6D? Thanks
