2001 Toyota Solara Review

  • Things I should mention:
-The solara had an optional 2.2L 4 cylinder with 65 less horsepower, which was objectively ass when it came to speed until it was replaced by the more superior (less "assy") 2.4 L.
-Right after shooting this video, the solara started to emit light smoke from the hood. It turned out to be the valve cover gasket, but nonetheless, I still trust it, just maybe not as much.
Intro song: Feel So Good - Mase
Anyway, thank you all for watching! This is my first post, so please subscribe if you liked the video as I will be posting another review shortly. This next review will go in a different direction than the solara video, so stay posted..

Just Bought an 01 Solara with 223,000 miles. Its at the shop getting timing belt, water pump, new spark plugs, cam and crank seals, sway bar end links, valve cover gaskets, coolant and oil change, a new tire and probably a power steering pump rebuild kit being that its leaking... I figure its worthy of respect and care being that these cars are well known for their longevity and reliability. $5,000 isn't bad for a car that may last another than 10 years if taken care of right? White with tan interior, very clean inside and out sun roof, auto trans and literally everything still works...

I bought this car in 08 with 84k miles on it. Eleven years later, I'm at 229k lol. Timing belt and water pump has been my biggest repair. Outside of that, the normal tires, brakes, oil changes, spark plugs, etc. My paint and interior didn't keep up but it's mostly my fault. Would buy again

I love this review. I have one exactly like yours but in blue. V6, 5MT, black leather. It just passed 250K and it still drives like a dream. It's so quiet, sometimes I forget to up-shift. This video makes me happy because I haven't found a review that makes justice to how great this car is. I was thinking about selling it to buy a 1st gen Highlander Limited, but I think I'll also keep it as a fun weekend car.

I have one of these with a v6, 227k miles. A 2002 model SE, I never envisioned owning this car that long.
But really it keeps going and price point for maintenance makes it a ridiculous idea to get rid of.
And if I do get a new car I am keeping my Solara as a backup or grocery getter.

Reading these comments of the Solara makes me feel well, I bought a 1999 Toyota Solara SE V6 with 290,000k miles. I couldn't afford much but needed a car and I hope she will last me a while

"After a few minor things went bad..." After owning a 1999 SLE V6 for 8 years, that sounds just about right. It nickle and dimes you with stupid crap like the vapor canister and the brake booster, but never leaves you stranded, unless you do something stupid.

good review..02 v6 sle owner...i refused to buy it off my dad for $1000 because it seemed old school compared to my 08 Altima that caught fire on the highway because the clv tranny blew...but after driving it a few times and at 225000km it feels more reliable then my altima did at 40000km....im a huge toyota fan and hope to get a 80 or 105 Landcruiser next...

Thank you, the solara was a really solid vehicle. Those landcruisers are great too, I just wish they were a little cheaper used! I guess you pay for the reliability and the name.

I've owned a Solara for over 12 years. It doesn't promise anything it can't provide was perfect.

The Solara was supposed to be released as a Lexus. Last minute they classified it as a version of the Camry. It shared very little with the Camry. I loved mine. 13 years and had to replace an exhaust sensor. Yes, it was not fast but enjoyable. Not sure if the could fit the 3.5 V6.

I bought a 2001 Solara V6 in 2010 with 64,000 miles. It still has some minor body damage I never repaired from before I bought it. It's been reliable and has 180,000 miles now. The manual trans and an added TRD supercharger make it fun to drive. I'm going to sell it and get a cosmetically nicer 2002 V6 convertible automatic with 68,000 miles.

Had this car for 3 years. V6 sle... got rid of it at 255k. You hit eh nail on the head with this review. PS, my head gasket had a slow leak too, it's really not a safety issue

I think it looks aggressive dull at some angles but yet aggressive! Silver trim on the grill takes away from the aggression

I agree...This is not a sports car, regardless of the SE designation...Doesn't do anything great, but it is a nice driving car, with a great interior, and a design that will still look good many years from now...I agree, current Toyotas are extremely "overstyled" and ugly. I wish I kept my 99 Solara SE 5speed, maybe I can find another one someday...It was a much nicer/better car than my 09 Camry 2.4L 5 speed for sure.

Seems like I’m the first here with a 2000 Solara 4 cylinder 5 speed. 2.2 5sfe. The manual trans feels so odd with how much of a boat it feels like but I still love it, way more fun than an auto, but these things do ride like 90s Buick’s there’s no arguing that

@@Realistick I've heard it pronounced both "SolAHra" and "SolERa". For what it's worth, my dad handed me down his Solara SLE V6 when I was in high school, and it was a great car! So comfortable. The interior was great quality and it had a very good sound system. I took it halfway across the country and it was just an amazing highway cruiser. When it came out, I remember reading that the highway road noise was lower than a Jag S-Type at the time. Thanks for the review! I actually LOL'ed at some parts.
