Kiss is a vaudeville show. Kiss is burlesque. They are a production. They are hard glam rock version of The Wiggles. They have a handful of songs that are OK that I like. But there is not a guitar solo a baseline, a guitar riff a drumbeat that I can remember or stands out in the least. They are an example of greed, hard work, merchandising and marketing savy and putting on a great exciting show. Not a lot about them is about music to me.
this solo is kick-ass! and the best part about it is that it doesnt even have to be complex, it's just to get the crowd rallied up, just like all of Gene's solos if you wanna hear something "complex" and "incredible" go listen to other bands like Van Halen or Metallica, but if you were a real KISS fan like me, you would like it! despite his Donald Trump syndrome on TV I still like him as a musician. you don't not like someone's employed skills just because they come across as a money narcisist. Bass is awesome! and Simmons is killer on the bass!
you are missing the point. If you compare him to Jaco, Ron Carter, Flea, and Claypool, you'd be right. But as far as being a bassist in a classic style rock band, with a huge tone, tons of attitude, and more of a melodic player than you might think, He's on the mark-marketing/ego aside.

This is from 30 years ago. Gene can play. He just doesn't give a shit what anyone thinks. Like them or not. Kiss remains one of the most influential and biggest bands of all time.
30 years ago he was 37 years old. If that was the best he could do at 37, then yes, he sucks. Whatever influence KISS had was for showmanship and marketing, not song-writing or musicianship. Look, it's obvious from what he's said in interviews that Gene never considered himself a serious musician. Why do you?
Actually, that's a pretty decent bass solo. He doesn't get caught in trying to give Billy Sheehan a run for his money, and he doesn't go crazy with the "entertainment" type thing that Michael Anthony used to do. And he keeps it reasonably short.
Gene is a bassist in the middle but write good songs while sheenan is a virtuoso that never write iconic material. When Gene plays the one note Bass solo's, it's not him trying to show off his skills on the Bass guitar it's not even a Bass solo. It's Gene doing his act with Bass to ad to the effect of the act. Gene may not be a great technical Bass player, but the riffs he comes up with in some KISS songs used as a foundation are excellent, Gene is an excellent showman unlike alot of other musicians i see who just stand there.
Is good, but overrated! He still wipes his dogs ass with Gene Simmons (he doesn't even deserve to touch Cliff's ass) I have two names for ya, GEEZER BUTLER, GEDDY LEE. These two are the greatest Metal/Rock bass players. [imo] Cheers.
@Burd Geezer Butley is overrated. There's nothing that amazing about his playing. Good songwriter though but if we're talking lead bass Cliff was a lot more inventive and had a much better attack.
+rvelasquez1982 If commparing to Geddy Lee, it is mediocre but it is only as bad as your ears make it out to be. I am spoiled by Lee, by Jack Bruce and Chris Squire being masters and seemingly god-like in the talent, but I am too pissed off to find it a terrible solo from Simmons.
One of those rare rock drummers that could play behind the beat and sound like a funk drummer. Amazing. It's interesting to note how as part of the rhythm section, Eric was 90%, Gene 10%. Eric was really able to hold it together and had obviously rehearsed so much more. Rip Eric. 😔
It sounds like he plugged into a practice acoustic guitar amp and then dropped it into a swimming pool, that's why. And that's the tone he "crafted" over more than a decade of playing bass. If you've exclusively played guitar and then switch to bass it doesn't translate right away, it does take some time and effort but it is pretty easily accomplished. At this point in his career he had had plenty of time and resources to become a great bass player, but apparently he didn't have any pride in being a musician? Maybe he was just interested in plastering himself with makeup and prancing around the stage in armor.. It's just embarrassing that this guy is one of the most iconic and recognized bassists in the world. I had always assumed that he must have been pretty talented, but I had never looked through his solos and performances until now. There are a lot of really talented bass players that end up having to play a lot of basic, mindless parts to fit with their band's style of music. I just thought that he was one of those that was stuck thumping along playing chord roots with few opportunities to shine. Looking through these clips it seems I was wrong about him, and I'm kind of annoyed, maybe even a little angry. He actually is only famous for his costume and gigantic tongue -- I always thought that was just a joke, but apparently it's serious. I know there are people that are ridiculously into this band, and definitely don't want to hear some rando saying this shit, I just feel extremely let down. He's an absolutely fantastic showman though, you've got to give him credit for that.
soulkiss314 I did end up checking out a Nikki Sixx solo, and the tone was about equally horrid as Gene's, but credit where credit is due, Nikki was actually playing in time with the drums. Gene seems to be only dimly aware of when the "one" is going to hit, and he's randomly ahead of the beat, behind the beat, occaisionally being on the beat, probably by accident.
Not even close! Hundreds of famous rock musicians point to Gene Simmons as an early inspiration for doing what they do. I don't think the people that you mentioned had quite the same effect. Or any effect on any musician, at all.
amazing how he thinks spitting fake blood while hitting the open E is a solo. this isn't a solo. it's a fool taking himself way too seriously. he does a mediocre riff for 3 seconds, stops, and then looks at the crowd for an applause. it reminds me of a child that does something all the adults go YAY! and then the kid keeps doing the same thing over and over expecting people to go YAY!
Dude he's just hyping the audience lol. A solo can look different depending on the needs of a show. Here he gets to run around, strum some chill tunes, and get the audience involved while the rest of the band takes a minute to breathe.
I am not a musician but I have heard and seen a lot of musicians to know the good from the bad. This guy is just bad, even when he is trying to play his best.
This guy is barely a musician. He excels at marketing and theatrics. Because there’s tons of people out there with low quality taste. “The Kiss Army” yay !!

And it will never be geddy lee, rush and kiss are so fucking different. You bass nerd need to relax...
This isn't a bass solo. This is just being a knob.
Hahahaha! That made me laugh out loud, Porlo. Good one, and spot on.
ooops!
Hey it's a nice bass scale
Tremendo Gene 🤘😎
He's no Jaco, that's for sure.
this solo is kick-ass! and the best part about it is that it doesnt even have to be complex, it's just to get the crowd rallied up, just like all of Gene's solos
if you wanna hear something "complex" and "incredible" go listen to other bands like Van Halen or Metallica, but if you were a real KISS fan like me, you would like it! Rock on Gene! your the best! next to Paul xD
despite his Donald Trump syndrome on TV I still like him as a musician. you don't not like someone's employed skills just because they come across as a money narcisist. Bass is awesome! and Simmons is killer on the bass!
You dont like the rich people ? Are you a comunist isn t ?
you are missing the point. If you compare him to Jaco, Ron Carter, Flea, and Claypool, you'd be right. But as far as being a bassist in a classic style rock band, with a huge tone, tons of attitude, and more of a melodic player than you might think, He's on the mark-marketing/ego aside.
Gene is the master of bass!!
The message that Gene is giving us: you can be in a band too. In fact everyone can be in a band.
He wrote lot of kiss song and his early bass line was really good dumbass
Yeah but not everyone can be as good as him or other members of Kiss.
The real boss
>The crowd are actually cheering for this "solo".
***** Excuse me but do you honestly believe what your saying...?
Do you play music?? Sorry, but anyone who knows their ass around 4 chords can easily hear that this shit sucks donkey balls...
...Yeah....Whatever you say Bob 'Hooters'... ._.
You're Adodpted I play and challenge all u fucks to learn this solo and post it. If u can play it then you have every right to talk shit. But I bet you will go home and try to play it. And can't. Then your gonna get back on here and talk shit
It's funny how many famous ppl talk highly of genes talents but these fucks that are no bodies that have never sold an album or wrote a song become king of the k f c. From a talented musician kiss fan. Fuck all of u all :)
*****
Excuse me, but which famous person talks highly of his talents? Lol I bet victor wooten and marcus miller are booth siting at home crying cause they wouldn't ever reach the level of gene...
You're Adodpted I agree!
The make-up is what made them popular.
They were sub par at best when it came to actually playing!
Gene Simmons, probably one the reasons why people think that only bad bassists play with a pick :/
Thus Paul Mccartney and Chris Squire are bad bassists? Play with pick is difficult as playing with fingers.
Great bass player ! Kiss forever
Gene simmons the best
Легендарный музыкант!!!👍👍👍🤟
Its not about technical skill. Its about kicking the audience's ass!
This is from 30 years ago. Gene can play. He just doesn't give a shit what anyone thinks. Like them or not. Kiss remains one of the most influential and biggest bands of all time.
AMEN!
30 years ago he was 37 years old. If that was the best he could do at 37, then yes, he sucks. Whatever influence KISS had was for showmanship and marketing, not song-writing or musicianship. Look, it's obvious from what he's said in interviews that Gene never considered himself a serious musician. Why do you?
i don't want to be a musician either...i want to be a rockstar! :)
Most influential.....?!?!?????? That is a laugh
Clown.
At the end sheenan is a man with half a million in net worth and nobody know him worldwide , while gene simmons is a worldwide legend with over 450 millions of net worth . Gene is an artist and a showman . Sheenan is only a virtuoso . 😅😅😅
2% bass playing, 98% showmanship
If you think this is bad you should watch the entire Animalize concert. It is shown to inmates at Guantanamo and they confess in seconds.
Animalize is so intense and fast, I love watching the shows. No drummer could compare to Eric Carr either. Only one who comes close is Eric Singer
I was in the Kiss Army when I was 14. I still have a love for Kiss. The truth is what Gene is playing is not at all complicated or difficult to play. It's like a guitar player playing Mary Had A Little Lamb and then expecting a standing ovation.
You're just a serviceable bass player Gene. Get over yourself.
It's called showmanship. Nothing less, nothing more.
This is the best KISS shreds videos Ive ever seen.
Absolutely, HE got real talent... RIP
tf u mean rip☠️
dude, you tf ? you just replied to a 14 yo comment (damn i was so fckn cringe, serious shame over here), you must be as high as i am right now ,that's not possible otherwise x) @@smashbaregozert3296
oh you lucky bastard, i've juste remembered : there was another link in my (VERY) old reply, which has been removed of course, to probably some bass legend in funk/groove/jazz/whatever, probably in a seek for attention and/or just for the love of trolling... good evening :) @@smashbaregozert3296
@@smashbaregozert3296fr he tweakin 😂😂
Gene is proof that you don't need to know how to sing or play an instrument to be a famous rock star.
So i see you know nothing about music
But he can do both .. do some research and go watch KISS mtv unplugged
First youtube video ever?
I didn't think it was that bad.
It is not that bad. It is also not that great. But perhaps more especially, it is not that bad.
Amazing bass solo in my opinion. I'd like to see most of you pick a bass up and do better! Gene in my book is one amazing bass player! He's been my idol for many years, got into KISS at age FIVE and stuck with them since.
I mean many of us could, with considerable ease...
@@carllightowler6670but you remains full of envy because kiss is one of the most iconic groups ever and you are nobody. You dont write great songs . This explain why you are poor and gene worth 450 millions .😂😂😂
Back when he had his own hair.
Its a wig here.
lol this is like the most obvious wig he's ever worn
@@zachary_attackery yeah, the head bands actuallt a strap to hold it on.
@@fatarry I think he shaved it for a movie during this time.
Who cares if this wasn't the best bass solo you've heard ! He is still a great entertainer + this is cool solo too :/
His solo is pretty awesome, wth are people talking about.
Those 2,141 who dislike Gene's bass playing, obviously aren't musicians/guitarists.
totally aggree!
Eat your heart out, Geddy Lee. In all seriousness someone please explain the appeal of KISS. I want to understand.
You'll never understand puss boy.
Well, they're not King Crimson for sure, but have some pretty catchy rockin' tunes. Also, the marketing and all that stuff.
That bass guitar is SICK though 🪓
Gene - probably the best example of the biggest disparity between musical ability and “success”
KISS- the lowest common denominator in rock music!
And millionares! Millions of fans around the world
Gene does have some good bass parts here and there. None are featured here.
I swear to god, my niece can play better bass than Gene, and she is four.
Two words. Cliff Burton!
Is good, but overrated! He still wipes his dogs ass with Gene Simmons (he doesn't even deserve to touch Cliff's ass)
I have two names for ya, GEEZER BUTLER, GEDDY LEE.
These two are the greatest Metal/Rock bass players. [imo]
Cheers.
Shiroyasha I always thought Kiss was for entertainment purposes. Never took em seriously. Geezer,Geddy. Good choices! Good day!
Harvester of Sorrow Steve Harris of Iron Maiden is a metal bass god (imo).I always thought kiss sucked and how this qualifies as a solo is beyond me.
Two words: The Wiz
watch?v=kbAKXCnGRzk
@Burd Geezer Butley is overrated. There's nothing that amazing about his playing. Good songwriter though but if we're talking lead bass Cliff was a lot more inventive and had a much better attack.
That´s 100% Simmons
50% Ego
30% Markenting
18% Show
...2% Talent
go listen the albums and think again.
I love Gene but this is the worst godamn bass solo of all time.
This is horrible yet very entertaining
rvelasquez1982 If you think this is the worst bass solo of all time, you clearly haven't seen his E E E E E E E bass solo.
micheal anthony bass solo
+rvelasquez1982 If commparing to Geddy Lee, it is mediocre but it is only as bad as your ears make it out to be. I am spoiled by Lee, by Jack Bruce and Chris Squire being masters and seemingly god-like in the talent, but I am too pissed off to find it a terrible solo from Simmons.
+gasmaskboi19371945 hahahaha yea.. this is still better than the E E E E E E E solo
Can he even really play bass?
No
Obviously dumbass
Geddy Lee is a musician, Gene simmons is a showman. Dont confuse the two.
ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED
No
Overrated schmuck.
One of those rare rock drummers that could play behind the beat and sound like a funk drummer. Amazing. It's interesting to note how as part of the rhythm section, Eric was 90%, Gene 10%. Eric was really able to hold it together and had obviously rehearsed so much more. Rip Eric. 😔
Worst bass tone I ever heard.
Indeed, however listen to a bass solo by Nikki Sixx. So sad.
why worst? you moron..
Nikki sixx is the worst bass player in rock history. Gene can play...listen to the early albums. He doesnt give a shit about what anyone says
wow- HE STINKS!!!!! - AWFUL BASS PLAYER - THINKS HE'S GOOD OR SOMETHING?
do better than he posts here on youtube heuheueheuehueheue
***** You do realize the whole world listened to Kiss? ya fuck.
Derek buys
The whole world listened to Justin Bieber, Backstreet Boys, and New Kids On The Block. What's your point?
Not even close! Hundreds of famous rock musicians point to Gene Simmons as an early inspiration for doing what they do. I don't think the people that you mentioned had quite the same effect. Or any effect on any musician, at all.
yeah, without clothes! XD
He can play as well as I can (and I suck)
Gorgeous man, wow...
amazing how he thinks spitting fake blood while hitting the open E is a solo. this isn't a solo. it's a fool taking himself way too seriously.
he does a mediocre riff for 3 seconds, stops, and then looks at the crowd for an applause. it reminds me of a child that does something all the adults go YAY! and then the kid keeps doing the same thing over and over expecting people to go YAY!
He is not bad. And that is only for show. This is not his best playing. Look at Going Blind. But your not a musician, so shut up.
i can't believe that no one has made a shreds video for this yet
Wait, this isn't a shreds video? :O
Ok but this is actually kinda good
That is the politest 20,000 people in history.
This is more of a chance for crowd interaction than a bass solo . I have seen Gene do some pretty good bass solos
What the hell is it with you people???? He's awesome!!!!!!!!
This is the best of those funny "(Insert Name) Shreds" videos.
This guy is the king of rock and roll he's so awesome
Not even close 😂
Also KISS isn’t Rock&Roll
This guy is barely a musician. He excels at marketing and theatrics. Because there’s tons of people out there with low quality taste. “The Kiss Army” yay !!
@@JAMESGANG-f5u no Need to get rude

the best solo i've ever heard ...
bazzzzzingaaaa
you're right. he's not trying to be a virtuoso, and never tried to be. as a classic rock and roll bassist, he is a legend for a reason.
Are there any tabs from the part starting at about 1:40? I just recently got into bass and I think this sounds really cool, so I'm not looking for anything impossible.
