This is from 30 years ago. Gene can play. He just doesn't give a shit what anyone thinks. Like them or not. Kiss remains one of the most influential and biggest bands of all time.
30 years ago he was 37 years old. If that was the best he could do at 37, then yes, he sucks. Whatever influence KISS had was for showmanship and marketing, not song-writing or musicianship. Look, it's obvious from what he's said in interviews that Gene never considered himself a serious musician. Why do you?
In music, a solo is a piece or a section of a piece played or sung featuring a single performer, who may be performing completely alone or supported by an accompanying instrument. It is still a solo bro, he is not a bad bass player but he is just into" I'll show you all my skills in this 15 min solo that i have" even on a interview says he is not a great musician and that he prefers an a chord rather that a 15 min solo with a billion notes lol
This guy is barely a musician. He excels at marketing and theatrics. Because there’s tons of people out there with low quality taste. “The Kiss Army” yay !!
Amazing bass solo in my opinion. I'd like to see most of you pick a bass up and do better! Gene in my book is one amazing bass player! He's been my idol for many years, got into KISS at age FIVE and stuck with them since.
@@carllightowler6670but you remains full of envy because kiss is one of the most iconic groups ever and you are nobody. You dont write great songs . This explain why you are poor and gene worth 450 millions .😂😂😂
Is good, but overrated! He still wipes his dogs ass with Gene Simmons (he doesn't even deserve to touch Cliff's ass) I have two names for ya, GEEZER BUTLER, GEDDY LEE. These two are the greatest Metal/Rock bass players. [imo] Cheers.
@Burd Geezer Butley is overrated. There's nothing that amazing about his playing. Good songwriter though but if we're talking lead bass Cliff was a lot more inventive and had a much better attack.
I was in the Kiss Army when I was 14. I still have a love for Kiss. The truth is what Gene is playing is not at all complicated or difficult to play. It's like a guitar player playing Mary Had A Little Lamb and then expecting a standing ovation. You're just a serviceable bass player Gene. Get over yourself.
+rvelasquez1982 If commparing to Geddy Lee, it is mediocre but it is only as bad as your ears make it out to be. I am spoiled by Lee, by Jack Bruce and Chris Squire being masters and seemingly god-like in the talent, but I am too pissed off to find it a terrible solo from Simmons.
ok i just have to say that just because hes not playing really fast or doing crazy solos it doesnt hes bad bass player. Bass is about groove and rhythm and thats what hes doing so dont go around saying "oh hes not playing fast enough or doing a crazy solo" hes knows what exactly what hes doing.
It sounds like he plugged into a practice acoustic guitar amp and then dropped it into a swimming pool, that's why. And that's the tone he "crafted" over more than a decade of playing bass. If you've exclusively played guitar and then switch to bass it doesn't translate right away, it does take some time and effort but it is pretty easily accomplished. At this point in his career he had had plenty of time and resources to become a great bass player, but apparently he didn't have any pride in being a musician? Maybe he was just interested in plastering himself with makeup and prancing around the stage in armor.. It's just embarrassing that this guy is one of the most iconic and recognized bassists in the world. I had always assumed that he must have been pretty talented, but I had never looked through his solos and performances until now. There are a lot of really talented bass players that end up having to play a lot of basic, mindless parts to fit with their band's style of music. I just thought that he was one of those that was stuck thumping along playing chord roots with few opportunities to shine. Looking through these clips it seems I was wrong about him, and I'm kind of annoyed, maybe even a little angry. He actually is only famous for his costume and gigantic tongue -- I always thought that was just a joke, but apparently it's serious. I know there are people that are ridiculously into this band, and definitely don't want to hear some rando saying this shit, I just feel extremely let down. He's an absolutely fantastic showman though, you've got to give him credit for that.
soulkiss314 I did end up checking out a Nikki Sixx solo, and the tone was about equally horrid as Gene's, but credit where credit is due, Nikki was actually playing in time with the drums. Gene seems to be only dimly aware of when the "one" is going to hit, and he's randomly ahead of the beat, behind the beat, occaisionally being on the beat, probably by accident.
Not even close! Hundreds of famous rock musicians point to Gene Simmons as an early inspiration for doing what they do. I don't think the people that you mentioned had quite the same effect. Or any effect on any musician, at all.
@OpFirefield The first "act" of any story that follows the three-act model introduces everything we need to know. The second begins with an "inciting incident," and things escalate from there. The third act is everything from the climax to the ending. Happy to be of service.
One of those rare rock drummers that could play behind the beat and sound like a funk drummer. Amazing. It's interesting to note how as part of the rhythm section, Eric was 90%, Gene 10%. Eric was really able to hold it together and had obviously rehearsed so much more. Rip Eric. 😔
@parlante88 Playing with a pick doesn't mean you can't play with your fingers. I am fluent in both, I just sometimes use a pick to get a different sound. Don't judge a bass player by whether or not they play with a pick.
Why does everyone find it necessary to point out that hes a bad bass player? Just because he cant play really fast, uses a pick and doesn't play hard songs or riffs doesn't make him a bad bass player. It's about how good the music sounds, not how fast, or complicated it is to play. Geez give him a break people?
you are missing the point. If you compare him to Jaco, Ron Carter, Flea, and Claypool, you'd be right. But as far as being a bassist in a classic style rock band, with a huge tone, tons of attitude, and more of a melodic player than you might think, He's on the mark-marketing/ego aside.
As for whether or not this is a proper solo, this is leaps and bounds better than what he's been doing as a "solo" for years - Hitting the E string and nothing else while spitting blood for 5 minutes.

despite his Donald Trump syndrome on TV I still like him as a musician. you don't not like someone's employed skills just because they come across as a money narcisist. Bass is awesome! and Simmons is killer on the bass!
You dont like the rich people ? Are you a comunist isn t ?
Hey it's a nice bass scale
His solo is pretty awesome, wth are people talking about.
This is from 30 years ago. Gene can play. He just doesn't give a shit what anyone thinks. Like them or not. Kiss remains one of the most influential and biggest bands of all time.
AMEN!
30 years ago he was 37 years old. If that was the best he could do at 37, then yes, he sucks. Whatever influence KISS had was for showmanship and marketing, not song-writing or musicianship. Look, it's obvious from what he's said in interviews that Gene never considered himself a serious musician. Why do you?
i don't want to be a musician either...i want to be a rockstar! :)
Most influential.....?!?!?????? That is a laugh
Clown.
Back when he had his own hair.
Its a wig here.
lol this is like the most obvious wig he's ever worn
@@zachary_attackery yeah, the head bands actuallt a strap to hold it on.
@@fatarry I think he shaved it for a movie during this time.
i can't believe that no one has made a shreds video for this yet
Wait, this isn't a shreds video? :O
Perhaps whomever posted this should look up Les Claypool, Flea, Jaco Pastorious or Geddy Lee to see what a real bass solo looks like.
Claypool🤘
Who cares if this wasn't the best bass solo you've heard ! He is still a great entertainer + this is cool solo too :/
@BILLABONGBOB1 I lol'd at "for shit shit and giggles" XD
Gene is proof that you don't need to know how to sing or play an instrument to be a famous rock star.
So i see you know nothing about music
But he can do both .. do some research and go watch KISS mtv unplugged
Those 2,141 who dislike Gene's bass playing, obviously aren't musicians/guitarists.
totally aggree!
This guy is the king of rock and roll he's so awesome
Not even close 😂
Also KISS isn’t Rock&Roll
This guy is barely a musician. He excels at marketing and theatrics. Because there’s tons of people out there with low quality taste. “The Kiss Army” yay !!
@@ezsmith3765 no Need to get rude
@@ezsmith3765 you have low quality taste
Amazing bass solo in my opinion. I'd like to see most of you pick a bass up and do better! Gene in my book is one amazing bass player! He's been my idol for many years, got into KISS at age FIVE and stuck with them since.
I mean many of us could, with considerable ease...
@@carllightowler6670but you remains full of envy because kiss is one of the most iconic groups ever and you are nobody. You dont write great songs . This explain why you are poor and gene worth 450 millions .😂😂😂
Two words. Cliff Burton!
Is good, but overrated! He still wipes his dogs ass with Gene Simmons (he doesn't even deserve to touch Cliff's ass)
I have two names for ya, GEEZER BUTLER, GEDDY LEE.
These two are the greatest Metal/Rock bass players. [imo]
Cheers.
Shiroyasha I always thought Kiss was for entertainment purposes. Never took em seriously. Geezer,Geddy. Good choices! Good day!
Harvester of Sorrow Steve Harris of Iron Maiden is a metal bass god (imo).I always thought kiss sucked and how this qualifies as a solo is beyond me.
Two words: The Wiz
watch?v=kbAKXCnGRzk
@Burd Geezer Butley is overrated. There's nothing that amazing about his playing. Good songwriter though but if we're talking lead bass Cliff was a lot more inventive and had a much better attack.
If u like him or don't he's a legend n respect him,,kiss lives on
I was in the Kiss Army when I was 14. I still have a love for Kiss. The truth is what Gene is playing is not at all complicated or difficult to play. It's like a guitar player playing Mary Had A Little Lamb and then expecting a standing ovation.
You're just a serviceable bass player Gene. Get over yourself.
It's called showmanship. Nothing less, nothing more.
I love Gene but this is the worst godamn bass solo of all time.
This is horrible yet very entertaining
rvelasquez1982 If you think this is the worst bass solo of all time, you clearly haven't seen his E E E E E E E bass solo.
micheal anthony bass solo
+rvelasquez1982 If commparing to Geddy Lee, it is mediocre but it is only as bad as your ears make it out to be. I am spoiled by Lee, by Jack Bruce and Chris Squire being masters and seemingly god-like in the talent, but I am too pissed off to find it a terrible solo from Simmons.
+gasmaskboi19371945 hahahaha yea.. this is still better than the E E E E E E E solo
11 year old me would watch this video over and over and fawn over Gene😂
KISS- the lowest common denominator in rock music!
And millionares! Millions of fans around the world
Eat your heart out, Geddy Lee. In all seriousness someone please explain the appeal of KISS. I want to understand.
You'll never understand puss boy.
Well, they're not King Crimson for sure, but have some pretty catchy rockin' tunes. Also, the marketing and all that stuff.
ok i just have to say that just because hes not playing really fast or doing crazy solos it doesnt hes bad bass player. Bass is about groove and rhythm and thats what hes doing so dont go around saying "oh hes not playing fast enough or doing a crazy solo" hes knows what exactly what hes doing.
Gene - probably the best example of the biggest disparity between musical ability and “success”
ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED
No
Give this man a hug and a cookie!
Overrated schmuck.
Can he even really play bass?
No
Obviously dumbass
My favorite bass guitar..my idol
I swear to god, my niece can play better bass than Gene, and she is four.
Worst bass tone I ever heard.
Indeed, however listen to a bass solo by Nikki Sixx. So sad.
why worst? you moron..
Nikki sixx is the worst bass player in rock history. Gene can play...listen to the early albums. He doesnt give a shit about what anyone says
best bass solo ever
Wrong
wow- HE STINKS!!!!! - AWFUL BASS PLAYER - THINKS HE'S GOOD OR SOMETHING?
do better than he posts here on youtube heuheueheuehueheue
***** You do realize the whole world listened to Kiss? ya fuck.
Derek buys
The whole world listened to Justin Bieber, Backstreet Boys, and New Kids On The Block. What's your point?
Not even close! Hundreds of famous rock musicians point to Gene Simmons as an early inspiration for doing what they do. I don't think the people that you mentioned had quite the same effect. Or any effect on any musician, at all.
yeah, without clothes! XD
He can play and sing which I think is enough, after all the bass is usually not on the same beat at the vocals.
Gene Simmons is not a musician
He is a marketer, entertainer, business men, and entrepreneur
he at least knows his strength
That is the politest 20,000 people in history.
I justl looked John Entwistle bass solo. And now this one. My ears are shocked
That bass guitar is SICK though 🪓
@OpFirefield The first "act" of any story that follows the three-act model introduces everything we need to know. The second begins with an "inciting incident," and things escalate from there. The third act is everything from the climax to the ending. Happy to be of service.
One of those rare rock drummers that could play behind the beat and sound like a funk drummer. Amazing. It's interesting to note how as part of the rhythm section, Eric was 90%, Gene 10%. Eric was really able to hold it together and had obviously rehearsed so much more. Rip Eric. 😔
Geddy Lee is a musician, Gene simmons is a showman. Dont confuse the two.
There's some nice funky/bluesy pentatonic licks in there.
Gene und sein Axt Bass - jepp das rockt. Gene ist eh ne coole Socke...Kiss forever!
@parlante88 Playing with a pick doesn't mean you can't play with your fingers. I am fluent in both, I just sometimes use a pick to get a different sound. Don't judge a bass player by whether or not they play with a pick.
badass riff
Wouldn't call this a solo, it's more of a crowd warm-up
I heard once that guy gene simmons from kiss, said that this guy is the best bass player in rock n roll
Gorgeous man, wow...
Great bass player ! Kiss forever
