The Elliott Homestead, mom of 6 here, 2 of which have flown the coop, and a sudden need to move closer to town for dh new position, selling the “forever” homestead 😭 to buy a smaller one closer to the city👎, really need to start home schooling year . 🤯 this was a beautiful, soul touching message for this full time family mama’s soul. Thank you for reminding me of the most important parts of the chaos.

I love this! I can sooooo relate. We took our four homeschooled kids fishing and had a day of failure. On the way home my five year old practices her Latin and says in a pouty voice, "Sum pessime! We didn't catch a piscis!" ...only a homeschooled kid.

We don’t live on a farm, sadly. We live in a HUGE suburban community. The bright spot is that we have a pond in our backyard! My granddaughter (we have the privilege of raising her) was the first to catch a 🐠! My husband works very long hours so we decided that for now we needed to move to a much smaller lot because he just doesn’t have time o play keep up a yard. But when he gets home from a long day he grabs his pole and goes straight to the backyard to fish. Sometimes with the kids and sometimes alone. It’s a little piece of Heaven.

It is so refreshing to see that more and more families are seeing the tradition of "public school" is not the only option for our kids. Our philosophy is very similar to yours, it's all about teachable moments, life experiences and building our children's character.

I feel taking children fishing is a great lesson in patience and how to accept not getting a fish. A life lesson on how to work hard at a task even though you don’t win at it right away.....just like working thru a hard math lesson with patience and errors but enduring it to the end....reaping the concur when it’s done well and they have learned how to push thru it.
You teach your children home schooling everyday.
You work together as a family, something few and far between in our modern society. Caring for the animals, the gardens, the bees and the household. There’s lots of love 💕 lots of hugs and kisses...
You are truly blessed in all ways. What’s money when your Dad is never home and your Mom is frazzled trying to balance work and home.
What’s having a fancy house in the suburbs, lots of electronics but never knowing the joy of planting seeds and watching them grow, holding a baby chick that needs your attention, drinking fresh milk and cream and watching your Mom in the kitchen creating love and nutrition or eating honey from the bees you help with and eating the warm scones Mom made with the golden river dripping down your chin. You teach them self reliance.
That is what your kids will take into adult hood , something schools cannot teach. Every child needs this....your are so Blessed.

It appears you are doing a wonderful job with your kids. We homeschooled our three who are now 31, 29, and 26. We took the "unschooling" Charlotte Mason approach and made everything a teachable moment. It became a lifestyle that they carried into adulthood. The early years are especially precious and it's great you have so much of it recorded. BTW - mine still remember all the camping and fishing stories. You have a lovely family.

Oh my goodness! I love this video! So encouraging, empowering and refreshing. I am a homeschool mom too. On my second official year. I think we homeschooling parents just have to keep readjusting what we do all the time. It's easy to lose sight of why we're doing this and only focus on filling our kids' minds with facts. There's a balance that allows us to do that while also listening to our children. I think it will constantly be a process of learning how to refocus. Just have to stay humble and keep learning. It's amazing how much we parents grow in the process of teaching our little ones!

Bravo, Elliotts! Sturdy kids matter, especially in this day and age. Your children will shine far above most of their peers because of the lessons you are giving them the space to learn(and the example!).
I homeschooled 7 kids over a period of 20 years and I wish I would have relaxed more, even though we mostly Charlotte Mason/unschooled. The angst of thinking I was never doing it well enough was a heavy burden. Maybe it helps that Stu has a teaching background, something to compare your kids’ education to, to know that they are far and away better “schooled” than a lot of other kids. It turns out that my children were very well educated. I think not having a tv made time and a space for creativity and thinking to take place, as well as tons of reading.
PS, Juju’s ponytails are really cute!

This was wonderful! As a shaky homeschool mom wondering if I'm doing all the "things" right and mad at myself when I'm not "school" enough.... this is what I needed to see! And that hubby was a teacher made me feel.... ok, if he can go fishing.... we can go fishing! I think a lot of traditional ppl involved in public schooling attempt to give regular moms and dad's an uneasy feeling that were not doing enough.... that the only teachable moments are in books or by a certified person to teach them. This warmed my heart and put me at ease....
I sure hope there are more of these videos to come. I adore the homestead stuff to death .... but oh my what a joy it is to watch you as a family even more ..... you inspire me to be a better mom and wife.... thank you ♡

As a now retired public school teacher (30 years), it is refreshing to see y'all being able to teach so many life lessons as you home school your kiddos. Fishing not only involved the skills needed, but safety from flying hooks and deep water, nature and the ecology of the surroundings, another lesson in trying to get your food and the downside of failure there, the reason why some fish have to be put back to grown larger, how to clean and prepare the fish once caught, etc. As I always mentioned to some of my colleagues, the first teachers of our students are their parents. The intended lessons and those learned from watching you will be with the young ones for a lifetime. Good job. Keep on keeping on. Joy Giles

I love this! We homeschool in a similar manner--placing heavy value on, well...values...learning continuously in life experiences, with a few math worksheets and grammar lesson thrown in for good measure. Just this evening I found a reading level test online and gave it to my daughter out of curiosity, to see on what level "the tests" say she's reading. She tested 2 years ahead of her grade level. Although this is a rudimentary way of assessing her level, I was stoked about the results because we jumped off the "read a story--do work book pages" ship last year and started reading condensed (for children) versions of the classics. She couldn't stomach Twain...her favorite was Poe! When she'd completed a book, I had her answer a few questions about the book...so I would know if and how much she'd understood...and to find out what her tastes in literature run to. It was fabulous! We're about to begin a new school year (we begin around Sept 1) and I am very motivated to move away from "read the chapter...answer the questions" learning in other subjects and incorporate actual life experiences with learning. Sure, mathematics may call for books and pencils and worksheets (Oh, my!)...but most of the other subjects can be incorporated within daily living, with a few plans and comments worked in. Learning should be a lifelong experience...from the cradle to the grave...and not some "thing" that we struggle through so that we obtain a piece of paper saying we've achieved some certain educational status. Teaching a love of learning and showing a child "how" to learn....that's the real instruction! GREAT video! God bless!

I love your channel and I am wanting to homestead and homeschool also.
"Everything is a teachable moment" sounds to me like a quote I will have to have on my school room wall.
    Thank u for sharing.

Farm school... I like it! We homeschool 6 of our 7. (The baby is too small still. But she does learn every day I guess! Lol she is learning sign language along with the English language haha!)
We do a lot of this “farm school”. For years we unschooled. And to a degree we still do. But we started using more and more curriculum along with it. :)
And lots of library trips. :)
Good job guys, your kids are cute! :)

I was just wondering what planting zone y'all are in. I watch a lot of your videos, but I live in East Texas (8b) & have a hard time planting & getting return like you. Your home & farm is just so beautiful. Thank you for sharing.

I am homeschooling and farming at the same time. I was having a hard time with trying to making my 4 year old do ABC's writing and then I started just loving life like this and she reads now when I do bedtime stories and will write her name whenever she wants we did counting really easy with his in seek and so on. Thanks for sharing this with everyone it makes me know that I'm doing the right thing for my kids. ❤💯

Love this. When my dad was a kid in the early 50s (living in Federal housing in Richmond, CA, in other words, dirt poor), he and his brothers would sneak off and go fishing. It's what they did when they were "being bad", as in, don't tell Mom. When I was a kid, my Dad would take us fishing while camping, and my older sister would catch fish, my mother even, who hated fish, would catch fish. My Dad, obviously, would catch fish. My little brother would get a good bite, and I would reel it in for him. But never in my whole 50 years have I ever caught a fish. Too bad, I love eating fish. Keep at it, Owen! Good job teaching your kids where food comes from (patience, that's where!) Recommended watching: Woniya's adventures on "Alone" Season 6 of the History Channel. She has a UA-cam Channel where she discusses how things went for her, fishing in shallow lakes in the Arctic last fall (nope, no fish, just squirrels and rabbits!). I'll try to find you a link.

Great video. Yep, not every day ends in a trophy nor should it. I like your approach to raising and educating your kids. Its called fishing not catching as the saying goes and it looks like they had fun anyways :) Pizza and beer is a great way to end the day. Ive been trying to decide what to do for our 35th wedding anniversary and you just gave me a great idea, fishing followed by pizza sounds amazing. Hugs from PA :)
