I was homeschooled most of my childhood (with some short experiences in traditional schooling, until I went to several public schools part-time in high school). It was an unusual childhood experience, so I thought it would be interesting to share my experience. It was a mostly positive one, but I would say that is due to my personality, being more shy and introverted and thriving in quiet environments. Homeschooling isn’t perfect for everyone, and I’m sure there are downsides and upsides no matter what educational path you choose. This isn’t a pro-alternative schooling video, just sharing my positive memories. Hopefully, it inspires you to get creative with your own learning journey throughout adulthood! I thought it would be fun to share and hear about your experiences as well!

I was homeschooled for less than one year in 6 grade but it greatly impacted me positively. I now homeschool my four children. I've homeschooled for 7 years so far. It's definitely a wonderful journey and I'm so thankful to be able to provide this for my children. People often say "it must be nice to afford to be able to do that" but I view it as I can't afford not to. Also, when you want something enough, you can often make it work. Technically we are lower middle class and have just enough. But we don't need extra. I don't need to take my kids to Disneyland or buy them the latest gadget. They need nurture, love and guidance - and that to me is worth the cost of having a lower income. Money isn't everything and you can't take it with you. Your legacy goes on. Blessings to you. Lovely video!

@@thatloafofbread8311 That is insane. Here in the US it goes by state. NY state you can homeschool but you must do everything the school does. In states like Alabama all you have to do is tell the school your kid isn't coming. No paperwork or anything. Some think it's bad. It's not though. In the beginning of America the colonists were marched at gunpoint into the first schools. True story. Just remember, you're in charge of your future, make time for hobbies and that is where you will learn the most :) School is just something we suffer through.

I was a highly sensitive child, introverted, and an artist who attended traditional schools for my entire education. I found it very distracting and chaotic, plus I also was teased by my peers because I was so anxious and different from the mainstream. I wish i could have had home schooling or attended a Montessori school growing up. I didn't do well academically at junior and senior high schools, but once I went to college and later university where I majored in art, I excelled. You were quite fortunate that your Mother was so attuned to her children's different sensitivities and was able t home school you while your siblings were better able to handle traditional school. Meanwhile I love your embroidery projects which are just as enchanting and magical as your paintings. Jenny

I can relate, but I kinda overcame it when I changed schools at 17. Before that I went to many schools (8 or more) including a Montessori school for half a year. While I like the idea, I got very lost. Being used to guidance, I was lost in the do it by yourself path and soon drifted into only doing stuff I liked: writing stories for language courses and art and history. I didn't understand a bit of maths anymore and had to go back to normal school and redo the year, but it was a good time because I didn't get bullied after severe bullying. I also got bullied again and kinda made my way through it. As a senior I got normal grades and went on to study architecture. I excelled in design and architecture psychology, in concept and history. Education should be rewritten into ways that cater towards the interest of a child. I even began to understand maths and Physiks, because it was finally about topics that interested me. If anybody is out there that is struggling, you will get through it and once you are in something that inspires you, you will flourish.

My schoolwork was brought home to me once a week and I completed it within a few hours. My grades didn't suffer at all. This experience really impacted how I viewed school. I was very close to my Mom and couldn’t understand why she was leaving me there. I cried and cried because I missed my Mom and Grandparents at home. I cried for at least two weeks every time my Mom left me there. So my schooling was off to a really bad start. As time went on I settled in but for some reason I could not pay attention. I daydreamed and was more interested in the birds in the trees outside or the snow falling. I did not have a lot of friends maybe because I just didn’t want to be there. I did walk to school with my siblings and cousins and that was fun. Sometimes we cut through the woods to get to school. That was always an adventure. In the woods I felt safe and sometimes I would hide there to be alone with myself. School was not an enjoyable time for me. Back when I grew up homeschooling was not even thought about. But I feel I would have benefited from it if it was available. I grew up hating school and that was a sad and wasted part of my childhood and teen years. I’m still a daydreamer and I think it will keep me young forever. Thanks for sharing your experiences. Have a blessed week.

@@dorispoloko3904 me too! January birthday and I was 4 when I started and turned 5 four months after starting kindergarten. I was very introverted and school was very difficult for me socially. Thankfully I was very good in reading in 1st grade, had a wonderful teacher who encouraged me and books became my best friend. In high school I had 3 other friends who were January birthdays so that was fun. I homeschooled our 4 children k-12. I loved being with them and it worked for us. We'd go to the library every week. Each kid had a milk crate and they filled it with books. Our librarian loved it! So glad we could do this without the distractions of cell phones and internet. This was 30 years ago when we started. We lived on a farm, did farmers markets in the city 3 hrs away. Learning was endless. Thankful! Now some of our grandchildren are being homeschooled.

I am from India and somehow stumbled on this channel during some casual surfing. I have seen a couple of video's and will see them all. Words can not describe how beautifully serene all of this is. Your content brought deep calmness literally from within the gut to heart.... and I mean it. I love nature myself and have often cried when I am with mother nature. Everything is so beautifully captured in your videos. It's a heaven where ever you are living. Rustling of leaves and grass .. that enigmatic burble of lake... faint humming of insects .. the wind and the hills....that soft crispy noise of snow.. I am sure that every thing in nature must be communicating with each other. That lonely tree which I saw in your video is not alone. Birds are coming to meet the tree, wind will play with it and the rains will shower it's love. You have the dog with you and that's a perfect companion. It's such a adorable animal to have. Being an artist yourself, I love the way you create any thing in such a gentle and artistic way. I think this is the best channel I have ever subscribed till date. Wishing you all the very best in life and remain sensitive that you are. I think more sensitive a person is, better he/she can absorb the true spirit of life (though being sensitive in materialistic city life have it's own disadvantages !). For the first time, I am looking forward to watch something worthwhile on youtube tonight and I will watch it from oldest to newest. Great job and take care...

Great to see a fellow Indian on here. I’m Indian too and love this channel. I grew up like her getting lost in the gardens and open fields around my house in India. Goats would visit our house. We had cattle grazing around in our neighborhood. Roosters, sometimes sheep, butterflies etc. I became an explorer and wanderer like her as a result. It’s hard for me to go a day without being out in nature. I feel like in India we keep the the doors and windows open so we’re more connected to nature than cold countries. Would be great to connect with you :)

It's been a bit since I've seen you! Hello!
Snow season always delays my filming a bit, but I wanted to make a video on my childhood experience of homeschooling, which was a positive experience that affected my entire life. I did a mixture of textbook and online courses recognized by the wider school system (so my education was remote, but followed the same courses of traditional school). However, this is not a good path for everyone - nor is it feasible - and there are both positive and negative experiences out there that I'm sure are all true, as are pros and cons of other educational paths. I had a large amount of opportunities for socializing, which was also vital as I was involved in a lot of activities. So, I wanted to share how much a childhood spent mostly at home was a gift for me. Please share down below your thoughts on schooling and what works best for you, it is an interesting topic to me because I think we never outgrow learning.
    Sending much love

Please forgive me, this is not about schooling, but I have been waiting for you to post again so I can share this quote that reminds me of you. It is from the wonderful book, The Middle Window, by Elizabeth Goudge: "Utopias are built best in isolation. In the filthy modern world you can't make a thing that's not at once smirched; but here in these glens loveliness can be ringed round and protected by the mountains."
"That's the monastic ideal," said Judy, "and I've always thought it rather selfish--a creeping away from life."
"Then you have misunderstood it. The monastic ideal is a core of sanity in a loathsome world, a core of sanity that spreads. Again and again men have gone into solitude to create beauty, and the beauty, created, has revolutionized a whole country."
Judy was still unconvinced. "But if nothing can get through the mountains to contaminate your Utopia, how can the beauty you create get out into the world?"
"If you light a bonfire in a sheltered valley the protection makes such a huge blaze of it that those outside see the whole sky lit up."

I don’t like how school teachers are or music. Art is an expression form and every artist is going to create something different with the same idea. This means teachers can’t grade art. It’s not proper because it’s a subjective thing and everyone’s gonna have their own opinions which are all valid and important. Are you in school is graded on how it looks but it should be graded on its story. On the effort the artist put in rather than on the end finish result. Sometimes you will have an amazing idea in your mind and when you try to bring it out on paper doesn’t work. But that doesn’t mean you’re less artistic than someone you got a better grade it just means that specific idea didn’t bloom out properly yet and maybe just require a little bit more time or thinking or a different medium. If you are graded with specific rules and guidelines you will never truly be able to show off that creativity and it may even take away your motivation as an artist which isn’t right. It’s the same for music. I am a lyricist and vocalist myself in music is my expression form. I don’t do too great in music class because it’s not about that. It’s not about reading a book and then writing a song to express your thoughts on that book for example. It’s about learning specific things from a curriculum. There we go. Artz in school isn’t about that creativity or expression that are in the real world it is. It’s about teachers even if they’re absolutely incredible following a curriculum that isn’t created by artists or people who truly understand the power of art. It’s sad but hopefully by discussing it on the Internet something better can happen. I know this is very long so I hope you enjoyed reading it and also I am legally blind

I always love to listen to people talk about their experiences growing up homeschooled. I'm so grateful to have been homeschooled growing up, and also to my mother who managed to homeschool all three of her children as a single working parent. I still don't know how she was able to pull that off with no support from anyone or anything, and even though there was a lot of struggle, I am just so grateful to have been allowed the childhood I needed . I was able to pursue my passions and any other interests I had, and I wasn't bogged down with a tedious schedule spelling out my every day. For the most part I didn't have to do homework, yet when I did, they were always fun and creative projects. I spent almost all of my time outdoors, playing, creating, playing music, building things, and learning through experience. I read all the books I could get my hands on and wrote stories of my own. I also spent years of my childhood doing various volunteer work, which taught me so many skills I use to this day.
I tried going to an public school once, but it only lasted a few weeks. I felt as if I was an outsider coming into a place that wasn't meant for me and I was treated so differently. I hated it and was happy to leave.
I really hope that I will have the ability to homeschool my own children when I have them and give them that same sense of creativity, freedom, and independence I had. ❤

I never thought I would do anything but send my kids to public school, but '20 happened, and I pulled our oldest and brought her back home. Homeschooling has been amazing for us. Both my children are thriving in it and love discovering things, and I love exposing them to literature even younger than they would have in school. We have had a few negative comments from people recently (because of their general idea of what homeschool is)which have left me a bit discouraged. Hearing such a positive story from someone who experienced it firsthand has been an encouragement tonight!

You're among a high number of parents, not a small minority. Often people fear the unknown, and misjudge it as a result. Others feel bad they won't or can't do it, so they act like it's weird. But 30% of Americans are homeschooled to some degree, and 100% were during '20. Many presidents were homeschooled; our forefathers were too - and they were amazing thinkers, often eloquent writers and speakers. And Eleanor Roosevelt said it best, "No one can make you feel inferior without your consent."

I'm a pretty sensitive, artistic person, and I went to traditional school until early high school. Then I burned out, and asked my mom to homeschool me. I'm so glad she agreed! Homeschooling allowed me to pursue my interests - I learned to garden and I raised pigeons. I went to a homeschool co-op where we took subjects that were harder for parents to teach, and we put on plays. I met my future husband there:) We now have 5 children and I homeschool them. It's not always easy working with the different ages, but I still love doing it. I love reading books together, taking nature walks, tending our garden, and letting each child pursue the subjects that really resonate with them. I realize not everyone is in a position to homeschool. I do, however, appreciate the lack of peer pressure for my children, the learning outside the classroom, and the relationships that we are building through it.

I don’t think everyone was meant for public school either. When I was in elementary school, my family moved to a new state. I experienced bullying in the form of shunning. People would find ways to not sit with me at lunch, I was constantly patronized by my peers, even teachers , and anything that required group work and being with partners (like for lab partners) was a nightmare for me. I was always the second to last or last person picked in games and I found myself alone all the time. This affected my grades and I became socially awkward. I developed severe socially anxiety and difficulty trusting people. I had struggled with reading because everyone told me I sucked. I hated reading out loud all the time. This all changed when I went to college. Suddenly there there was no pressure to be in cliques or groups and my grades were great. I am a lawyer now but I still have bad flash backs of the social exclusion. Some people just thrive better in environments when there is not a lot of people. If I had homeschooling or distance learning I would have had a better time in school.
Thanks for this video. This hit home to me so much.❤

Thank you for this lovely explanation of your homeschooling experience. I started schooling my children at home 33 years ago when homeschooling wasn't "cool", and it was a gift for our family. We all developed a desire and ability to pursue a lifetime of learning, caring for people, creativity, and strong work ethics. Homeschooling doesn't solve every problem in life, but it can give some children a better chance in a world that is often chaotic or too conforming, noisy or shrouded by peer pressure.
As early homeschoolers, we were pioneers going into somewhat uncharted territory! Yet we trusted Jesus as we blazed our trail with other friends.
Screen time was very limited, as our motto was, "Instead of watching people live, let's live!" As a result, creativity, deep thinking, and friendships flourished!
Thank you again for your kindhearted sharing, Paola!

Thank you for sharing your homeschooling experience. I started homeschooling my children 36 years ago when it was very uncommon. It was one of the most enriching experiences my children and I had. We spent so much time in nature, raising farm animals, reading books, and visiting museums. They had many of their own projects going in their free time and they were blissfully unaware of current ‘trends’ and fearlessly followed their own hearts, which to me was the biggest plus. We belonged to a home schooling group that had about 135 kids total, so there was no lack for socializing, but the kids interacted with all age groups, 5-17, and each child was a special individual and could talk with adults with ease. A very special time in my life. 💕

I read so many books, even when I should've been reading my textbooks. :) I was inquisitive and loved to ask questions until I understood the subject, which in turn I finished highschool later. I had a very good imagination and loved writing and spending time outdoors. However, my last year of highschool to "catch up" I am doing online and homeschool, which is very busy. There's not as much room for hobbies and imagination. Also, I realized technology is sometimes really an imagination killer. You're so lucky to have a mother who was really in tune with your needs! As an HSP myself, I really resonated with you about how drained school made me feel and how it disconnected me from my creativity. Granted, I went to the largest, specialized high school in NYC but still I feel like HSP children find most public schools draining and kills their focus and curiosity. I left high school with very low self-esteem and a profound sense that 'something was wrong with me' because I couldn't imagine myself in any of the jobs that we were prepared for. Luckily, my parents allowed me to go to college for art and a decade later my self-esteem and understanding of myself allows me to enjoy life again and accept me as I am.
Thank you for sharing your story of being homeschooled- I think its so important that more parents are attentive to their children's needs and support their best learning environment!!!

No one knows you or cares as much for you and your education than your parents. To me, homeschooling is definitely worth any sacrifices that need to be made. I grew up in a small town and attended a One Room Schoolhouse and a high school with only about 300 students total. So I had a precious schooling experience. But I choose to home educate my children because...No one knew them better, cared more or would be able to spend more one on one time with them. I was homeschooled all the way, from the time I was old enough for preschool. My mother was an excellent teacher with a broad range of curriculums she was able to find. And we also travelled and moved a lot, which was part of why we homeschooled to begin with. I love how you call it “unusual,” as it was very normal for me. 😆
I grew up loving to learn everything I could, and I still do to this day. I would wholeheartedly recommend homeschooling to those with the means and experience.

Thank you for sharing your story! I grew up as a somewhat highly sensitive child, and somehow, traditional school worked for me, but I also supplemented a lot of my learning through reading, museums and sometimes movies or TV shows (Cyberchase taught me a lot about math, and Scooby-Doo movie DVDs sometimes had documentary-style videos exploring the countries and cultures their mysteries were set in). I was always excited when something I’d learned on my own came up in school. When I entered middle school my family moved states, and we were suddenly more suburban, with a little less quiet, less nature right outside my door and a new school, and I struggled socially (I was blessed with a friend who welcomed me into her group, though I took my family’s move hard and had trouble being social). Unless I am misremembering, I think one of my coping mechanisms was actually focusing on my schoolwork…and reading and other creative forms helped keep me busy, and I’m so grateful to have grown up in the age of VHS and where computer games were a special treat rather than a default pastime. Somehow I managed to find my pace throughout it all, and while it was bumpy at times, I am very grateful for where it has led me. Sending much love ❤️

Thank you for sharing the thoughts of your experience.
I spent 2 years in public school , my 5th grade year, and my senior year.
The rest was in small private schools. I felt very needed and useful in the private schools where I was the school "librarian" and was allowed to assist the younger children with their learning. I loved schooling K-12 all together in the same building and being with all ages as well as my siblings.
I am a homeschool mother of 12 children, still schooling the youngest 5.
I've always bought into the idea that life should have a measure of boredom in it where creativity is born. I also have always lived where we can walk out the door and find nature waiting. So good for the soul!
I have been watching you for 3 years now, and really enjoy your videos. I have an embroidery /felt project waiting for me to begin it. I think I will now after watching you today!

Good Morning Paola! I stumbled upon your channel in late 2020 and have loved you ever since. Though I am now in my 60's, I wish my mother would have been able to homeschool me back in the 60's and 70's. I was an emotionally sensitive child like you and thrived in quiet spaces, reading books and lost in thought. Noise and crowded places brought on anxiety. In my early 20's I married and we had 5 children. My husband and I agreed that homeschooling would be a good choice for our children and we have never regretted it. I know not everyone has that choice or even wants to choose that form of education, but I have always been thankful that we had the choice and were able to do it even though it was tough financially. "Finding what works best for the student " hits the nail on the head. I was a long time public high school teacher and mentor to new teachers. Shifting the focus from presenting content to providing the environment and experiences that promote individual learning is a challenge for even the most dedicated and skilled educators. Especially in overcrowded classrooms! As you say, no method is intrinsically better than another. And, unfortunately, alternatives may not be available. You are fortunate to have parents who recognized how you learned best and provided a wonderful mix of opportunities and experiences.

I come to realize that when I will become a parent someday, I don't like the concept of having to conform to social norm such as having other people, most of whom you do not know, and what values and influences they would teach your kids, and many of them just did so because it was their job and they are paid for it. Some of the time they liked public or private schools and some times they liked homeschooling. Overall it was harder to school from home with time, money restraints, but my children were generally better behaved, happier, and less led by other children thus their morals were sweet, and they remained innocent. It was more fulfilling to homeschool them. And given the choice again, I would NEVER put them in a Public School system again. It is the biggest regret I have.

    This is so nice.❤
I was also homeschooled until grade 8, and it was a mixed experience for me. I think the "homeschool energy" of being interested in what I'm interested in without worrying about what my peers were doing was very mentally healthy. I also played with stuffies long after others had put their stuffies away.
A large reason that I was homeschooled is that my parents could tell that I wouldn't have been seen as very intelligent at school. (And as a grown woman I was finally diagnosed with ADHD and a lot of my life made sense!) It took me a very long time to understand how to read. But then when I finally got it around age 8, I loved it and was reading adult books by 10 (and children's books. I still read picture books as a grown woman. I just really love stories.)
I chose not to homeschool my children, while still keeping that as an option in my mind if they should really need it. I was very lonely, as an extrovert homeschooled by an introvert. It's true that it prompted me to read more, but it wasn't really healthy, it was more like escapism. I'm still not sure if my mom just didn't get us out enough, or if I was too demanding, but it felt SO long between social events and my main memories of childhood are of filling time while waiting, and being jealous of my friends who got to see their friends every single day. On the plus side, I am still very close friends with my sister, and we have many many shared childhood memories.
My son is the same way and I'm getting another perspective as an adult who is being pestered about why he "never gets to invite anyone over" when he's had friends over every weekend for a month, but it happens to be Thursday.😂 I can't imagine how much worse he'd feel if he then also didn't see friends at school every day!
He actually did very well academically during Covid, I think because I was there to give him individual attention, whereas my introverted child, who reminds me of you in that she does so much better with a slow pace and deep dives into knowledge, she completely wilted, and often would come crying in the night to me about "being lonely". She's very sensitive and I wonder if she was accidentally taking my feelings as if they were hers. (That's how I felt, although I tried to be brave and positive for the children's sake)
Of course, Covid homeschooling and real homeschooling are completely different. However, it did confirm for me that I do not want to do that with my children, while at the same time, it confirmed that I could. (Especially after I ditched the online learning and just made stuff up, dividing the difficulty level into three for my three children. It was MUCH easier than trying to make all the technology and different teachers work.)

That was wonderful to learn about your childhood home schooled experience. It sounds like a dream to my inner child.
I attended public schools that were very competitive. I completely bombed out and ended up in special education for most of my classes. My special education teacher saved me and showed me that I am unique, and I learn different. Even though I did terrible in high school with a very low grade point average I went off to community college and then university where I was top of my class all because my special education teacher showed me how I learn best. 🧚🏻‍♀️🐇🌸💝
My heart goes out to the children that do not have these options. There’s no way I would’ve survived public schools without my special education teachers! Being homeschooled would’ve been optimal but back in the 80s that was pretty rare.

My mom does admit it would be really hard to teach something above 4th grade math for her. It is definitely easier to teach 1st graders yourself than middle schoolers and late elementary. @@saturn6563 It just depends on the families. Some families use math programs like Mr. D's math or Teaching Textbooks - one has a teacher, the other is self-directed but with a parent's help. Some parents also like CTC math, others use tutors once a week, etc.

I also grew up homeschooled in the 90's and graduated in the early 2000's. My experience with being homeschooled (after starting out at a private elementary school) was wonderful. It gave me so much freedom to be creative and get my work done at my pace. I was able to graduate high-school at 16 and start working full-time at a greenhouse that I later managed. I put myself through college and graduated debt free. Now I am continuing to work and run two businesses while also homeschooling my 2 children.

Two years ago, I started a long way to recovering, and I progressivly understood I would never completely recover, in a way, because I was trying to live in a way my all body and soul couldn't assume anymore.

I know this is the life which suits me best.

I don't know how long you have been since you quit teaching and experienced burn out, but I wish from all my heart that you will be completely recovering soon, and being healed by your new way of life. Thank you so much for commenting, it enforces me in my new life too! ^^ Have a good day!

@@paulineprosche-wh8nr Nice meeting you too. I'm thankful to all of you too. I'm really blessed by this UA-cam video by knowing that there is not only me facing such rare life decisions. But honestly, I evaluated it myself and have weighted what's more important to me and I cannot betray my conscience for that. That led me to be more honest with myself part of which was to honestly acknowledge that I really do not like being paid being forced to do what I don't want to do. Way back in college, I finished education because I want to apply what's good in it for my future kids, and that's all that I want to do. That was five years ago. And then I tried working in the corporate world and I was in for the same cycle again, and it didn't hold me for long. Then I pursued for independence and that's where I find my freedom without others forcing or telling you what to do. But I like it most when I shall achieve my freedom of country-living and caring for what's most valuable to me. Stay blessed Pauline. Thanks that out there in this world there are also people who are introspective of themselves like me. God bless you. 🤗

@@paulineprosche-wh8nr Uhm it's not really that beautiful in the process, but I'm just being optimistic for it for it is the vision that I want to see myself then. This is a real great challenge. But there is that hope that rivets my vision that it shall be worth it. Thanks for the message. God bless! 🤗

your videos are art and so soothing to watch, thank you for the magic you create... and honestly hearing that you were homeschooled, this is no surprise to me, I am homeschooling my daughter and it is amazing to observe and sense her creativity and uniqueness, for which you are also an amazing example

I loved this video ! I homeschooled all four of my children with a Waldorf education emphasis and my children now all grown with families, talk about very similar memories to yours. Their first day of traditional education was their first day at University. They were 16 and realized their music tastes were just the same as yours !
