  • Things look different for us on the farm. When I'm not paying attention, the Mom guilt can get the better of me with how that manifests into my children's lives. But when I open my eyes to see the magic at play, the family garden, dairy cow, food preservation, and hard work make a lot more sense.

I just got an elderberry kit that I can NOT wait to make up. How long does it generally last once you make up a batch? Is there a special way to preserve them?

We are sixty three and just moved off grid and on the race to get our cabin finished out. In spare time I have begun to clear out briers and plan for my garden for next year. I have brought some decor from home but downsizing to a one room cabin with a bath and closet so obviously not all could come, but I did bring a framed motto my grandmother had for my bath as it hung in hers since I was a girl. It is faded and sentimental. I had commissioned a quilt for my son and his wife and my friend made a small sampler about two by three feet from the scraps that matches and the colors will fit my cabin perfectly.I brought a teapot my late husband bought for me one birthday. I brought a drawing that is framed that my son did when young and he is forty two. I have begun planning what will grow well here and discovered what already is (Autumn Olives!!) and a giant lamb's ear plant. Quartz rock in pinks and tans will help with making my garden beautiful. I saw my first bear, as it wandered into my yard two weeks ago and strolling deer past our fence just thirty feet away in the mornings. I am using canned goods I preserved a year ago. In the move, we opted not to garden this past year except for ONE huge pot of sweet potatoes that came with us. I am about to harvest them. Because we did so much the year before, we have what we need. I am super blessed watching your channel. Beauty from your hand, memories and togetherness. You are spot on. Glad your hubby is willing to share these dreams with you.

As we approach putting our CA Central Coast home on the market, things around here REALLY remind me to live in the present. I think we have such a tendency to always look forward and focus on lack....but even though I am excited to move out of the small city into a more rural and smaller community - I also appreciate what this house has brought us. I brought my son back home from birthing him to this house, I've grown as a gardener and seriously advanced my ability to maintain LOTS of gardens (even for a more urban environment like mine!), and we've made this home just that: MORE homey. It will be HARD to leave and I'm grateful for the 10 years this house gave me. Onto older (I'm only considering 75+ years or older home!) and more rural....but MAN am I ever thankful I've had this particular roof over my head. Another FAB vlog, Shaye and Stu!

Life doesn't change here at all. I know when the light changes but nobody else knows what I'm talking about. We are in the Caribbean. The light started to change at the end of September. Our trees don't shed or turn colour.

My friends are always asking me if I take my daughter(age 3) to this activity, this play group, story time, or craft time, and the answer is generally no. We do get out of the house and do good and fun things, but I make it a point to not fill up all our time and days with busyness and hurry. I want to spend time in our garden with my daughter or just sitting under our pine trees with her as she digs for worms, I want her to have a chance to get bored, to just be a little girl to play and dance. It baffles me why most of society runs from one thing to the next, it just seems so draining, and life does not have to be like that! Yes there are seasons of busyness, but the whole need not be that.

I did the same thing with my son. Now at eleven he adores being home and with his parents. He is one of the most content kids I have ever been around. I get him tons of books from the thrift stores and let him create and be. I have never heard him say he's bored and wants to go and do something else away from home. My husband and I tease him that he's barn sour, he always wants to be home and I love that.

I have to say your channel is one of the most life giving homestead related content I have ever watched. I find many homestead channels have an underlying anxiety in their videos. While I'm sure there are many tough days, you present your content in a way that infectiously communicates contentedness. You make me feel like the world is a deeply good and beautiful place. Keep up the good work!
I believe the "feeding the soul" concept as a practical activity is well illustrated and described in Steven Covey's book, "the seven habits of highly effective people". The seventh habit is "sharpen the saw". When you sharpen your soul, you increase your effectiveness in the rest of your life.

Yes! I have sensed that too when I watched another homesteading video because this poor girl didn't stop to take a breath and I didn't realize I was anxious until I stopped the video and was like man, I can't watch this girl. I guess I'm empathic when I realized I was taking on her stress. Not how I'd want to be if I Homesteading.

I miss those days of the young children & having the land to grow things...a distinct purpose from season to season. Not all my tears are sad, many are of complete joy for you, your family, & just from the wonder of this beautiful creation God has provided to us. What a gift!

I didn't even know Dusty Miller bloomed! Here in Tx, the winters are milder and I have Dusty Miller that is 3 and 4 years old. It's never bloomed. I'm going to move it this Spring - at least plant some new plants in a different location and feed it some extra potassium and see what happens. Those are gorgeous!

I've been working my way through your videos in reverse chronological order. Today, Nov 13, 2020, I am listening to you and Stu talking about how so few families intentionally choose to just slow down, stay home together, be quiet and close and cozy . . . and I can't help but marvel at the way that the COVID pandemic has forced so many families to do just that. I can recall seeing and hearing many people express gratitude over having been forced to connect as a family. God can and often does use circumstances that might otherwise be negative, and bring good things from them.

I loved your video...hmmm, what looks different in my family. Our 2 sons married last Sept '18 and Feb '19, so our life has changed. I now have 2 beautiful daughter-in-laws. Several weeks ago we spent the evening preserving some of the the garden and orchard harvest. It was a beautiful time together...fun, laughter and memory making I'll always cherish. (Little secret; my sons married sisters ..all were home schooled...loving it!) Our youngest completed her homeschooling last spring, so I am retired 28 years of teaching first as a carrier before children and then homeschooling. She is pursuing a career in oil and water color painting...The Painted Thrush. She turned her brother's old room into an art studio and goes to work 9-5, M-F. I love Autumn and the harvest. I love decorating for Fall. Bringing in the harvest...never seems to be enough time. (Night before last I was out with a head lamp bringing in spaghetti squash in case the temps dropped below freezing.) I love how you collected the flowers...now I don't feel so guilty. It's nice to have a kindred spirit.

I think the mom guilt is one thing that prevents me from living the homestead life style the way I'd like. I don't know how to transition out of the sports, the clubs, the co-ops, the youth nights, the music lessons, the dance recitals, the birthday parties, etc. I don't know how to downshift and still feel like I'm offering my kids everything they should experience in their youth. I do hate the stress of it. And I hate how much time I spend in the car shuttling six kids around. The guilt...especially as a homeschool mom--it's compelling.

I used to explore the woods around the house where I grew up and one year I discovered a big Holly tree. I had never seen real Holly before then and fell in love with it because it remained bright and vibrant through the winter when everything else was dead. There seemed to be something almost magical about having boughs of Holly decorating the house in the midst of winter.

I came back to enjoy this again. On this bitterly cold, brightly sunny end of fall day, I found this so relaxing & pleasurable. It was a nice break. Soon I'll return to housework & cooking something to eat - an open faced broiled sandwich, like my mom used to make. I place some mostly cooked bacon, sliced tomato on a blanket of a very nice NY state cheddar, on a grainy bread. When the cheddar browns up a bit - it's time to eat. Then it's back to feeding the birds & cat again, & doing more cleaning up in the kitchen. I just adore your kitchen - and the window with such a lovely view.
Later, I'm making a simple sauce & blanching a heap of fresh cranberries, to soak in the syrup a while, & then lay them out on parchment to dry in a slow oven. They're a joy in scones & muffins, but to me, best when eaten with raw nuts, toasted pumpkin & sunflower seeds, & maybe some cheese & an apple.
Loved those dried flowers - piled on the bench. It's beyond words, just how pleasing it was to see you cutting & grouping them together, & then hanging them in a pass through or doorway like that. It felt almost as though I was there, doing it myself, as I love this type of activity. Now it's a matter of waiting until spring, as we approach the shortest day of the year, so there's a real depth of appreciation - of those mild fall days when you recorded this video. It's been in the teens & single digits here in MA, for a week or so, with very high winds for a few days, taking the wind chill into sub-zero temps, to make it feel even more bitter. I feel for the tiny birds, so feed them black oil sunflower seeds, a few times a day in this weather.
That combination of flowers & leaves looks so sumptuous & elegant...yet creating that tableau - not counting the months of tending the plants - was such a simple thing to do. And I appreciated your narrative exploring how meaningful it is to continue to create beauty in our lives. Seeing those harvested flowers seems to have stirred my senses & uplifted my spirits.
I never knew you could dry sedum flowers like that - & yours are so much bigger than mine were, & so is your lavender! You, your family, home & gardens are just so lovely & gentle. This was such a great, unexpected escape from all the political rancor I've been steeped in for months now. To see your kids taking this all in, & helping was a nice feeling too.
Thank you to you all, & a very happy Happy New Year.

You guys are amazing! Thank you for sharing and giving us all inspiration to enjoy, be thankful and slow down just a little. And also to feel like “panicking” a little is normal. I have gotten so many ideas to create from these videos without putting the weight of the world on myself. Do what I can and not give up on it all by looking at the whole picture as overwhelming and undoable.... all or nothing is not the name of the game. Do what you are inspired to do and then you get things done with enjoyment rather than not getting much done because you don’t think you can do it all. I have a 2.5 acre farm that my mother and I bought together 3 years ago. Run a garden market each summer and have chickens cats and a dog. Soon to expand our family with horses, goats and alpacas.... maybe more critters ... don’t know exactly.... but I don’t feel alone with your videos and they really are so inspiring and Monte Don... you are well on your way girl! BBC here you come... seriously! Xo

living, growing up on a farm is so different then city life. city life has so many down days and weeks. where growing up and living on a farm. you are run by the months, days of the year. you only have so much time to get things done before another season comes, and there is ALL WAYS things to do on a farm. So when you take a day inside You still are working hard. because all your hard work from the outside is ready for you to preserve it for winter. we raised our daughter with Alpaca's, and gardening, playing in the pastures, etc. when she went off to college. :( that was hard on me. she moved to Kansas from Washington state. and she met a very nice young man. and he is such a city boy! :) and all the things she has thought her life was wasted on a farm. came back to her and she realized she had the BEST growing up someone could ever have. watching babies being born. eating straight from the garden. walking around the farm holding chickens.. and she has a problem going to the grocery store and picking produce and eggs... yes she will be back in 2 years when she finises college. and I miss her so much. she ;s the only gir lwe have the rest are boys.

Shaye, the guilt of our children not being involved in away-from-home activities is so real. I war with myself often and wonder if my children are going to resent my decisions. I want them to get exposure to other wonderful areas of life but it is difficult to run a homestead if you are running kids around in your car.
Up until this year we stayed home mostly. Recently I have enrolled them in activities...and I cant say yet if I am happy with that decision.

Oh Elliots! Fabulous as always. :) There ARE others of us, just like yourselves, that are out there. We are cutting things out of this busy world to value the things that are more "still". We often are alone or, for those others that will listen, leading this movement. Some can even get offended (alas, our culture today) that they don't do enough of this, but you reap what you sow. I love this. Beautifully presented with a luring, soothing story telling. We're going into a space of healing after some very serious health issues my oldest child faced- largely undiagnosed for years that has altered our course so horribly for too long. The garden is my place of rest and soul healing/growing. I have the motivation to bring that inside now- with fresh cut flowers now, and flowers/foliage for drying when Summer subsides. Today is 47*C (116.6*F), day 5 of a huge heatwave.
Sometimes I feel like it's such a blessing to be 6 months apart in seasons (We are in Australia), as it gives me a chance to plan to do similar things when this season rolls around for us. It makes me see that the work now, will pay off for beauty in the house later. Thank you for sharing. -Corryn

I just found your channel today, and I love it. I love this type of lifestyle, this down to earth, live with and for and on the land. It feels so intentional and grounded. And this was such a little thing, and maybe it hit me hard because I lost my mom when I was 19, but the look you gave your daughter as she was tasting the elder berry tonic was really touching. Thank you for just being who you are and sharing little pieces of that with the world through your videos.

I love Fall. It’s my favorite season and it’s because things do slow down after a busy Spring and Summer. Slow down, rest and by January planning the new year of gardening begins. It’s supposed to be below freezing tonight. I haven’t brought flowers in and I’m hoping they will be protected enough being close to the house and I will be able to gather them tomorrow. We will have to see what tomorrow brings. Thank you once again for another cherished video. 😊

The mom guilt is real! Thanks for sharing that. Sad/funny... your videos make me feel mom-guilt of my own, that my child lives in a suburban tract and not on a little plot of farm land... You sharing the sense of never being done, always having more work to do, and mom guilt helps me realize that no one has it perfect and no one feels perfect. Even if they look perfect (which you do! :) )

What a lovely, feel good video. Love your homestead, the glimpses of family life and the surroundings. Absolutely dream come true.
We do not have a homestead, but a small former farm in a small village and we keep chickens for eggs and have a huge orchard and vegetable garden. Every time I make apple compote it rminds me of my great-grandmother and how she made it when I was a kid. I love autumn, the slowing down from the sheer craziness of summer with all the bursting of vegetables and fruits. The busy-ness of harvesting and looking after the plants, the weeding, the re-sowing or preparing the winter crops. Now it seems as if life slows down and it is not at break-neck speed anymore, even though there is still some crazy stuff out there. Autumn and iwnter for me is the time for hobbies, for reading, for taking long walks in the crisp autmn air with the dogs, of sitting at the camp fire, talking and learning new things at work shops over the winter.

I just loved everything about this! 17:35 of pure joy! I'm looking forward to first fire, quilts and tea myself! I can't shell pecans or make blackberry or apple jelly without thoughts of my grandmother, and I'm usually doing it in her 100 yr old cabin. We strained the blackberries and apples through an old cloth sack that sunflower seeds came in, and another one that flour came in. After cooking the fruits down, we would tie them up and hang from the ceiling (I have sage, lemon balm and rosemary hanging from those very hooks right now) and catch the juice in big stainless steel bowls, which I still have. Of course the sacks were permanently purple! I used them for years until they finally just fell apart, and I can't find anything similar. Fond memories, for sure!

Your videos are so calming and inspirational to me, especially now while I sit in an rv, in cold (teens) weather, impatiently waiting to close on our new 2.5 acre property in Idaho. I’m so eager to get my hands dirty again! I was hoping to do some fall planting as soon as we moved in, but winter seems to be moving in fast, so it may have to wait until spring.

My childhood was memories of my Grandmas salve. This is a recipe that you may need because it is above and beyond the best. My great grandmother had a dream to make it. That great! And it’s true. Preserving is in my blood, thanks to my mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. If you want to cook a batch of Grandma’s Salve, I’ll happily come out and brew it up with you. If you are wondering, I do all veggies and fruit as well as the salve. 🙂 (There is a lot of pine sap in the recipe. Do you have that out there?)
Adding this. When my little girls were in elementary, I begrudgingly went to a parent meeting about children. The question was to our big group was how we could handle/like/deal with kids coming home from school. The “speaker” pointed to me as I was wearing a red sweater. Honestly I said that I missed my girls during the day, that I loved them being home, that I looked forward with happiness to them getting off the bus. Collective grown from this group of parents. I felt a bit mortified. I’ve never worn a red top since. My girls are 35 and 37. Lol.❤️

Nancy Cowan I think you should wear a red top all the time and spread the love of children! I always felt the same way about my kids, that’s why I ended up homeschooling, I missed them and the only time I got to see them was in the morning when they were grumpy and hurrying to get off to school, and in the evening when they were worn out and hurrying them off to bed to start all over again. That was madness to me! The salve recipe sounds interesting, is it a secret recipe?

    • @nancycowan6109
      @nancycowan6109 4 роки тому +1

@Cynthia Fisher Thanks for your comments about your kids. Lucky them. Homeschooling wasn’t something many of us did back in the “olden days”. Lol. The recipe for the salve is written in my great grandmother’s handwriting - it’s been modified to fit modern times. The story is is that she had a dream about making it and did. Not so secret but kind of complicated. Happy new year to you.

I get those groans all the time as well. We have 6 children and I miss them dearly when they're gone to school all day and can't wait to watch the bus pull up in the afternoon! They've al been home for a year (due to covid) virtual learning, and I just love having them here. Our mornings haven't been so rushed to be outside waiting for the bus by 7am. We get to be together all day. Our property/home is large so there is plenty of room and plenty of opportunity to also play alone or find a quiet space to read a book. Love it.

Thank you for putting this collection of events of your fall days together. It was so satisfying...I've been considering ordering Elderberry capsules. I like what you've done here.
Assembling the cut sprigs & flowers to hang from your ceiling like that was a wonderful way to end this video.
I used to live where there were several Pee Gee Hydrangea standards. All branches arched from atop a woody trunk, at least 6' high, with a 2' long X 10", 11" wide panicle at the tip of each branch.
Their coloring went from a light green in spring to a rich cream color in summer, which progressed through delicate shades of a dusty old fashioned pink, to more brownish hues as the fall progressed.
You reminded me of how much I enjoyed cutting them at various stages to have them placed around the house in different colors. They kept for over a year, & there were always new ones on the way. Small clusters were broken off to stick into smaller vases & a grapevine wreath on the top 1/2 of the Dutch door, in the kitchen.
A large basket of them, arranged & allowed to dry in place would take up so much space, they had to go in the middle of the large dining room table. Another large basketful went atop a tall, simple wooden cabinet in the kitchen. They weighed next to nothing, baskets included.
They looked so nice alone, or with sprigs of fall leaves until they curled, & Silver Queen Artemisia, which dried nicely.
I see you've cut some Amaranth & is that Russian Sage? Were those orange/ red flowers Zinnias?
Loved to see your family gathering around the fireplace for a while. Did you do the stone facade? It's lovely & rustic.
Mine has a plain wood enclosure & mantle that needs an upgrade. The way it's built, it sucks the heat out of the house. It needs an insert with a fan that blows heat out into the room, or a wood stove, so I haven't used it in years, sadly.
To see a fire in the fireplace is long overdue. Thanks for reminding me I even have a fireplace! Now to solve the heat loss & cosmetic issues!

So relieved to hear others express the urgency one feels this time of year to get everything in and then prepare everything outside for winter....so much to do and so hard to not let it get to you to the point of not appreciating the bounty and all we have. Your hanging flowers are amazing! LOVE that idea! I need to incorporate that in my home. Oh my goodness, I just found your channel and I’m on my 3rd video🥰💕 your lifestyle just speaks to my soul! I grew up in a cabin in the woods near Spokane, no electricity. We hauled our water until we drilled our own well when I was 7(our pastor was a professional and taught my Grandpa), we had a big garden, my Grandpa loved preserving! We put up sauerkraut, elderberry jam, grape jam, my Grandma made apple butter, I learned bread and pie making skills at a young age. Your videos fill me with such a longing to have that for my young family now♥️ I just want to start somewhere and get this back into my life🥰
