I really feel the "They got to play with the skeleton puppet" part because I heard an interview with the director and it did have a very fun vibe of "I can't believe I got people to give me money to do this."
Mildred, you said that Alex Winter had a cameo and his fingerprints are all over it... He plays Vlad! Thats the best part of the obnoxious character, it's Bill S. Preston's head screaming in way too much prosthetic makeup! I loved this film.
I get that his motivations were so elaborate to the point of parody, but honestly I haven't felt so represented in media. Yes, all the motivations, my life is chaos.
When I realized the lead was Jonah Ray, I also got where a lot of this was going. I loved his stint on MST3K, but his specific vein of comedy there aligns with a lot of what you're saying here. Music was a big component, but often also music esoterica. Weird niche bands or pining about eclectic sounds. But also a lot of nerd anxiety stuff as well.
Glad to see you back. I miss the Forever Knight content. I have found I have listened to each of the Forever Knight videos at least half a dozen times. Fun Fact: that plastic rainbow unicorn skull at the end of the video...was likely bought at a Joann's craft store (RIP). How do I know this?....I too, own one. And it was bought on a halloween clearance sale. Hangs out with my dragon figurines atop my bookcase.
Thank you! I couldn't remember the name but I was like "these shots and puppets and gore remind me of something I watched as a small kid on cable way too young."
What you’ve described is a movie that leans tonally, thematically, and in every other way into “prog rock is difficult to get into but rewarding once understood”, and made a whole movie about both that experience and the FEELING of that experience, how having a niche interest means being undercut not only by other around. You who don’t get it, but also by yourself for not having a more accessible interest. Not that I would know, I play D and D and it’s super popular and all of my friends love hearing about it 😊😐😑😔
people like us who enjoy niche activities often put the cart before the horse by not realising that 'normies' cultivate shared interests for expressly social purposes.
DnD is super popular though? Like, what are you talking about? Tabletop in general isn't that much but people usually know what it is and have some ideas how it works. That is not niche. Have you seen the sale numbers of BG3? Branded on DnD.
Keanu Reeves was being interviewed by a guy who claimed to be a massive "Bill & Ted" fan when "Bill & Ted Face the Music" came out. He asked Reeves if it was difficult getting back into the role of Bill to which Reeves responded. "I play Ted." The guy stood, placed his microphone on his chair and walked off camera. "That's right," Reeves said. "You walk away." To his credit, the guy did come back and finish the interview.

I've recommended this before but I'd love to see your take on Dia de la Bestia (dir Alex de la Iglesia, 1995), it's one of my favorite horror comedies of all time. Not gonna give away too much but it's about a mild-mannered, elderly parish priest who discovers the date of the apocalypse is mere weeks away, and comes up with a plan to thwart the devil's army from within - a plan which requires him to sin as much as possible in the limited time remaining. If that concept alone isn't enough to hook you in, I dunno. Right up there with Peter Jackson's early stuff (though nowhere near as splattery) or Cemetery Man (which I'd also highly recommend).
throwing me to see jonah ray playing with the Joann's Fabric Store rainbow unicorn skull in a real actual movie, we have one of those in our living room
I appreciate the mantra of, "not every person will get it, but the right ones will" being in the movie, as Joel from MST3K has said that was the show's ethos.
Have you done the CRANK movies? Cuz I feel like the message of Crank 2 was, "oh you didn't like how batshit the first movie was? WELL FUCK YOU HERE'S ALL BATTIER BATSHIT! ...oh... oh you *did* like the first movie? WELL FUCK YOU EVEN MORE! HERE'S ALL SHITTIER BAT SHIT!"
Yes, Crank 2 is the rare sequel that somehow ups the ante on everything that happened in the previous movie while simultaneously hating its own audience. Like if you took the desperate one-uping of the original from The Mummy Returns, and the absolute dripping contempt of the original from The Exorcist 2, and smashed them together into one
We have a suggestion for a trio of... Well, not movies, but stage productions. The Hatchetfield series from Starkid, which has a mini-series and a short film under its belt as well. The three musicals are The Guy Who Didn't Like Musicals, Black Friday and Nerdy Prudes Must Die. We love the whole series, and it explores the nice niche of horror-musicals that should be far more common.
thank you for reminding me of those. i paused after watching 3/4 of The Guy Who Didn't Like Musicals, closed the tab and completely forgot I wanted to finish it later, when I had the time.
I was JUST checking this channel to see if you had any new uploads. So what I'm saying is, I willed this video into existence. It was definitely me manifesting it and altering the entire universe to serve my wants, and not anything else.
Bruce Dickinson of Iron Maiden released his solo prog rock concept record/CD/whatever they release these days called "The Mandrake Project", and my guess is this movie is referencing that.
So happy to see a new Scaredy Cats video, and this one was pretty fun. I'd been blitzing through old Thought Slime videos the last few days, so this was perfect timing for me, especially as I was considering going back through the Scaredy Cats library next (spoiler: I did)

I’m glad to see this review on this channel - when we watched this a month or so ago, one of my more persistent thoughts was “…but what would Scaredy Cats think?”
It is...actually wild how even the parts where you were sincerely talking about parts of the movie you think did not work on any level, made me want to watch this movie even more. They might have made this movie *for me specifically,* I don't know, I'll report back later when I find out if I liked it or not.
I don't know why I didn't smell Alex WInter all over this from the instant I saw weird sfx makeup subhumans like Vlad on the screen, but as soon as you outed his involvement, Mildread, I recognized him under Vlad's makeup. As for a review suggestion: SPOOKIES! 👻It's on Shudder as we speak! Basically Ghoulies with, like, half the charm. Or wit. It is fun, though, and has an array of puppet moisture ranging from displeasingly arid to . . . quite, *QUITE* wet . . . 😏

GOOPY PUPPETS The obsessive focus on needing to finish things and express things and how annoying you can be to get there (with tiny ear canals!) Tbh every single music nerd who watches this movie will immediately recognize “all the motivations” guy. 2:57 Another thing Mildo and I have in common. Listening to Dragonforce unironically. Though, I do happen to also like prog rock and can find at least one song in just about any genre I've heard that I like.
"I find large stretches of it to be quite irritating" isn't typically a thing that someone would say about a movie they claim to have "liked", but I guess that's what makes your reviews so interesting.
I appreciate your review. I went into this movie, wanting to like it, and just felt exhausted by the end. They try to do just...so...much, make all...the...jokes, and it just felt like they were grabbing me by my shirt and screaming, "ISN'T THIS FUNNY??? ISN'T THIS WACKY?!?" in my face.
