►LYRICS - Gentle On My Mind
It's knowin' that your door is always open
And your path is free to walk
That makes me tend to leave my sleepin' bag
Rolled up and stashed behind your couch
And it's knowin' I'm not shackled by forgotten words and bonds
And the ink stains that have dried upon some line
That keeps you on the back roads
By the rivers of my memory
And keeps you ever gentle on my mind
It's not clingin' to the rocks
And ivy planted on their columns now that bind me
Or somethin' that somebody said
Because they thought we fit together walkin'
It’s just knowin' that the world will not be cursin' or forgivin'
When I walk along some railroad track and find
That you're movin' on the back roads
By the rivers of my memory
And for hours you're just gentle on my mind
Though the wheat fields and the clothes lines
And the junkyards and the highways flow between us
And some other woman's cryin' to her mother
'Cause she turned and you were gone
I still might run in silence, tears of joy might stain my face
And the summer sun might burn me till I'm blind
But not to where I cannot see you
Walkin' on the back roads
By the rivers flowin' gentle on my mind
You dip your cup of soup back
From a gurglin' cracklin' cauldron in some train yard
Your beard a rustlin' coal pile
And a dirty hat pulled low across your face
Through cupped hands 'round a tin can
I pretend to hold you to myself and find
That you're waitin' from the back roads
By the rivers of my memory
Ever smilin', ever gentle on my mind

Thanks, hun.
To the Petersens, I understand your desire to sing it from a woman's perspective. But can you go through the lyrics again, I find discontinuation as you replace I with you, especially, when
"some other woman's cryin' to her mother
'Cause she turned and you were gone"
From the beginning, it is a woman who is singing and the man is stable in one place.
"You dip your cup of soup back "
again here until now, the woman is the one leaving the man, suddenly the man is the one travelling
Thanks Liz!
Thank you
Julianne's voice was MADE for this song!
I'm a Brit but I had the pleasure of riding route 66 on a Harley a few years back. All I can say to you yanks is ignore the flak you get from us europeans - yes none of our countries are perfect but this rendition of the song just takes me back to that middle america where you have the most beautiful countryside and people and should be rightly proud.
Just to add I'm from the Cotswolds in England - the most quintessential view you all have of us but Missouri is an equal in landscape - not history though but I fell in love with it all the same - this song just transports me there - great job.
@Christopher Davis mess is right
❤️
I’m married to an Englishman from North Yorkshire…he’s been here with me in America for 6 years. He has embraced the beauty of my country, while I long to return to the countryside of England. I spent a beautiful week in Stow on the Wold in 2013 and met him shortly afterwards. I also love Upper and Lower Slaughter. England is where my heart is
Thanks for the kind words! Proud to call Kansas home!
Best version of this song I have ever heard!! Julianna’s voice is phenomenal.
When Disney tries to fake wholesome, THIS is what they lack. This is just the purest beauty. Thank you
There aren't enough superlatives in the English language to describe The Petersens. The musicianship, the peacefulness, the serenity, the smiles, the harmonies, the whole vibe, the HOPE that watching their performances inspires. Just brilliant. God Bless The Petersens...with respect and admiration from Surrey, England.
Very well said. It soothes my bones.
UA-cam was invented so that we could get to know The Petersens
The best use I've found for UA-cam thus far :)
You definitely right
That's what al gore was thinking when he invented the internet.
Absolutely 🙌 love this one 💕all the way from good ol Durbs, SA happy new year peeps 😍
I couldn't agree with you more and I'm so glad that I found them!
Im 56 years old......Gentle On My Mind is my fave old time song ever.......I hope Julieanne gets to read this message....her cover of this song brings some emotion to me....sung Beautifully...thank you.
I agree.😊
Me too
Julianne's got a hauntingly beautiful voice. The sound of vulnerability and her natural gapping is second to none.
Any time Julianne sings, my day is always brighter.
Totally...
How lovely
Goosebumps
curzon176 you ain’t kidding.
Too much voice cracking
Sweet!!!! Absolutely made my day, Thank you Petersens, may God bless you all!

Your brain's cracking.
Mama is the bassist, she is the glue holding them together.... God bless your family Mama
When you see her sisters smile proudly at her my heart opens up. Just fabulous!
Yes, that is a special appeal for this performance. Watch closely for Katie's smile just as the final image fades away.
There's a lot of soul in this song. I speaks to the struggles of the people of this country and to the heart of its people. Glen Campbell brought it to us with such depth and feeling. The Petersons have renewed a timeless classic and carried it into a new generation. I hope they appreciate it as much as we did.
Holly cow... there’s more than one sister who sings like an angel?
----------> 3
As does the brother
yup 3 of them and their brother holds his own too
Julianne Petersen has a voice that gives me goose bumps, she has such a great resonance. I can listen to the song again and again and that as a Linkin Park fan.
The father can sing 2.
This edge on Julianne's voice is indescribable. Beautiful.
One of the things I love about this is the woman in the back who I presume is the mom, taking a back seat to the talent of her kids, and the unassuming role of someone who has surely sacrificed dearly in the effort to produce such a beautiful display.
... and she plays a heluva bass fiddle, too!
Don't underestimate the talent required to play cello as the only "rhythm" backup instrument!
@@SerHenkan I didnt.
She is the mother.
Mom used to have the
mandolin slot until Julianne took it over. Now she plays a mean bass! "Get it, Mama!"
Julianne’s voice was absolutely perfect for this song!!! I would be remiss not to mention the stunning instrumentation on the part of everyone.
There's nothing about The Petersens that I don't love. But her voice is so pure and honest. This takes me away to some place more green and peaceful than any place I could find in the real world. I love this so much.
I couldn't agree more! This is some of the BEST the music industry has to offer! I'm a new fan. This young lady has some seriously blessed talent!
And you should see how Julianne stole the show even way back in 2011! Here she is..... ua-cam.com/video/gLp-lLfPWZA/v-deo.html
Did anyone else notice the cat? 😊
A couple announcements...
1. As we noted in the description, the song was written by John Hartford! The video is titled "Glen Campbell" because our versions sound more similar and he made the song famous. We love and respect both of these amazing artists!
2. (Edit) "Gentle on my Mind" is available now for download!
iTunes: music.apple.com/us/album/gentle-on-my-mind/1486990638?i=1486990640

3. We've been seeing a lot of your requests for live audio. We loved the idea but did not have the equipment to record live until a couple weeks ago. Our next song will be an original AND a live performance!
As always, thank you all for your continued support! Our family loves making music together and people like you make that possible. - The Petersens
What cat? I was too busy watching how you were playing!
No, I totally missed the cat, going back for a rewatch. That’s a beautiful version of one of my favorite songs.
I only discovered the cat because of this clue. It's a miracle that banjo and violin didn't miss their bet. :-D
That is great news that this will soon be on iTunes and Spotify. The cat just added to this wonderful video. And maybe someone here will know how to start a Petersen Family "Go Fund Me" for some amazing microphones & other sound equipment that you need?! God answers prayers!
Greyyy
Julianne's natural tremolo is distinctive and pleasant and, importantly, does not distract at all.
I found the voice too pitchy as if the singer had trouble with control. The mandolin and dobro were nice touches to a classic Glen Campbell song, but this song was a bit out of reach for Julianne.
I started crying! Glenn is smiling down on you, and yes, he's even singing with you! He has ALWAYS been proud of you and your family. I know he would have much rather been here with you, however, he's making the BEST stage EVER for you. God bless you and your family! I love you. Along with you daddy!❤
I only have one complaint about the Petersens...NOT ENOUGH VIDEOS!!
indeed. they should start to think about their followers' wishes, and the sincere need we have for more material (that sounded like addiction!).
These folks are about as good as it gets . I subscribed , can't get enough .
They might be able to offer more to all their paid Patreon sipporters, I don't know..
I'd rather listen to this than any of today's fake pop. Good job.
Seconded 🍻
100%
I made that switch in 1974, (but also included a lot of classic jazz and folk music from all over the globe.)
Amen to that. Love em.
Has anyone else been binging on their music lately? Every time I think one sibling is the most talented I watch their next video and change my mind. LOL.
Covid 102-105 degree for 6-8 weeks... I don't know day it is, or even if it day or night.
You KNOW I gotta be binging on them, to maintain my sanity and remember what happiness used to be.
I'm confident that I'll live, but I've about a month of abject misery yet to endure.
You can only play the hand you're dealt. Play it wisely.
@@deanchampion6777 Best wishes, brother.
@@MarkWilsonMSW : I'm feeling much better. But being treated now for some serious liver thing. Ah, the fun never ends... LOL.
But now that I'm conscious again, time for some more Petersens.
I'm a "newbie" and I am blown away!!!!!
I keep coming back to this version. It's stunning.
Probably Julianne's best performance. Her voice is so pleasant and she comports herself well.
I actually listen to this song with her singing several times a day--on one of their CDs while in the car and then via You Tube here on my computer.
"Wade in the Water" might disagree...
@@italia689 Well, that's another good rendition of that song and which she does so very well.
It is simply impossible not to acknowledge the immense talent on display here.
Yeahhhhh'
Amen
Second or Third or Fourth that, Julie
Words are useless, just listen 😎🙏⚘
Immense
The whole band is fantastic! But the slide guitar player doesn't get enough credit! He is an amazing player!
His name is Emmett Franz. He is one of the best players alive of that particular instrument (the Dobro). It is a type of steel resonator guitar. Very talented indeed. More information on the whole band can be found here: www.petersenband.com/bandbios/
Not to worry Will, us musicians definitely notice Emmett’s superior playing skills! He completes the chemistry of the Petersen band.😎👍
I agree
Correct! I too think so
He gets tons of credit. He is amazing in every song they have.
I can never get enough of this performance. I especially love Julianne's voice. This is my favorite of all your songs, but I do enjoy your group immensely!
Nice to hear your version, really enjoyed the innocence... I had the honor of playing the song with both John Hartford and as Glen Campbell's bandleader and guitarist for 15 years. Sweet job!
Wow! Honored you listened to it. Thank you!
Cool Jeff...
Very nice. Hi praise coming from Jeff Dayton.
Jeff's the real deal. Check out his performance with Glen and the South Dakota Symphony. Can't watch that enough. Great playing, Jeff!
She dose amazing job with this song love to hear more music by them
Let's give Emmett the recognition he deserves for this song. Amazing.
Glenn Campbell is smiling from heaven. 😊
As is John Hartford.
Glen would have loved to have jammed with these gals and boy's for sure!
Me too ❤️✌️

So glad I discovered y’all on UA-cam a month ago. Some of the most beautiful music out there
Glad you are enjoying it!
Pretty wild... I discovered them about a month ago too! My wife and I have a cabin near Branson and we're going to have to try and catch them next summer!
Yeah, finally a proper suggestion by YT, subscribed after watching(hearing) two clips lol
Matt Atkins Yeah UA-cam has opened up a great many talented musicians for me too 💁🏻♀️🇦🇺
i am dying from kidney failure after 10 long years. your music has made every day brighter since i discovered yall about a month ago. May the Lord bless your band and each and every one of you. If this doesn't bring a smile to your face nothing will. Just beautiful. Tears. Fine musicians. John and Glen are "ever smilin', ever gentle on my mind."
Yup, both John and Glen, I'm sure.
To see the growth of the band is amazing!
I keep drifting back to this. Julianne's voice has some magical, addictive quality to it.
Yes I’m the same way! Love it!!!
Glad you said that...I couldn't think of the words to say it myself, Jeddy
you kin hear her sweet accent - ' iver gentle on mah mind
Back again. lol
Her voice is very addictive and unique (in a really good way) and has hooked me. She doesn’t seem to think much of her voice but she’s got the thing. She adds so much to the vocals in the mix too.
I love her; so authentic and, at the same time, a little tongue-in-cheek. A real sweetheart. She may not need to fall back on that college education.
Julianne, you must know this is one of the most beautiful songs that Glen Campbell ever sang! My father was a good friend of Glen back in the early days in California and my father & I would often spend hours on a weekend evening listening to Glen! I can sincerely say, what a wonderful job Julianne! Thank you Petersen family for bringing back the sweet memories! 🙏💕
she sang southern nights extremely beautiful too
@RuFing Crazy I often got so jealous when my father spoke of those days. I feel I’m an old spirit & I would have been in my element from the 40’s through the 80’s. I was always endeared by the likes of Campbell, Jones & Nelson & many other Country artists from that generation. I miss him....
Another HALL OF FAME worthy performance. I had to laugh because knowing everyone's last name, I saw EMMET DOBRO and wondered if that was HIS last name. OK..it's late. Maybe some sleep is due! GREAT JOB FAMILY!
No matter the sunshine...
...your smiles somehow shine even brighter! 😍
I am a HUGE fan of this wonderful family. So talented and blessed. This is as close to heaven as I could ever get here on this Earth. I love all their songs and every time I listen to the girls and Matt sing I just tear up with tears of Joy. Thank you lord for this family
Yes.....what a blessing they are to so many people!
What I like about this is the wholesomeness. Such a reprieve from all the toxicity being heavily pushed.
Got that right a sweet heavenly sound.
You might also enjoy Mat & Savanna Shaw's UA-cam performances.
Agreed 100% Shawn... well said.... !
Hear, hear. And kudos.
Something about that girl. She is electric. So great.
I just can’t hear this song enough! Your family performed this as beautifully as I’ve ever heard (outside of the first time with Glen doing the original)! I remember it like it was yesterday. It was in 1968-69 when I was a young Marine combat infantry officer in Vietnam. I was down near China Beach in DaNang and heard it playing. I was in the mash unit being treated for wounds and said to myself, “I’ve got to learn that song when I get back to the world!” I did exactly that, thanks to God for getting me home safely. There’s no song that I’ve ever played more...over...and over...and over. Just can’t get tired of it. I’m 76 and I remember when I heard the news that Glen died....I just broke down and cried! Thanks for the memories, kids (and mom!)...I believe Glen would have loved to hear your rendition...and maybe he just did! ;)
Jerry Glazener, Capt. USMC, ret...and still picking in Texas!
Captain, first of all thank you for your service to our great country.
I would like to refer you to John Hartford's version of this song if you haven't already heard it. He is the writer of the song and an immensely talented musician.
Blessings to you sir...
Thanks for serving!!
I'm 69 and was fortunate to be watching the Glen Campbell Show when he first sang this. I am so happy for you that you returned from the Nam, only wishing that all could have done so as well. You had it SO tough. Every time I visit the Wall in Washington I am moved to tears.
Captain Glazener. Thank you for your service in the Vietnam War. Those of us that served later, and were treated right by are fellow citizens know you Vietnam vets got a really raw deal from the American people. Well, this citizen at least, really appreciates you. Glad you lived to learn this song. Oh, folks should always remember, "Don't Mess With Texas!"

We had the honor of having Glen Campbell's daughter Ashley in the recording studio today for a few hours, we surprised her with this cover, she was all smiles and tears at the same time, needless to say she loved it, Congrats Petersens on a very well done cover and Julianne on lead vocals was icing on the cake, It wouldn't surprise me if Ashley ask the Petersens to go on tour with her next year........
That is awesome!
SUPER AWESOME. Everybody will always love Glen Campbell. I sure do.

They spoke to me at the meet and greet after the show, and Ashley even gave me a banjo pick.

Oh my God, beautiful music as always! I am at total awe at how the Petersen mother always stays in the background without any ambition to be famous... although she probably has done more for this beautiful music than anybody... It's weird, why does she never even show herself? What a beautifully discreet woman!!!

The love I see in this family, could make me weep.
I'm listening again, just loving it more every time, musically brilliant Julianne perfect.
Me too. I've listened to this about a hundred times, and every single time I listen, it gets better! Plus, I'm a total sucker for the Petersens' vocal harmonies, yet there's not one note of vocal harmony in this! Something about this song makes it perfect forJulianne's unique voice, and the musicianship of the rest of the band here is just stellar.
Ever wake up in the morning during a shift in seasons and the fresh air stings your nostrils in the most delightful way? Yeah... This has the same sort of effect on my ears.
Jules and Emmett's performance in this still blows my mind to this day. This is the best version of this song that exists.
I don't normally like cover songs, but the good Lord God Almighty has blessed every one of these people with talent. No doubt they practice and develop that talent, but they are amazing. Her voice is angelic, and all the instrumentals are incredible.
Every once in a great while you stumble upon a Gem among the rocks. I am so blessed to have done that in finding "The Petersen's". It feels wonderful to know there is a family out there so talented, fresh and inspiring. I can't wait to see them in person some day, Thank You!
I love your analogy.
I found this fabulous family several weeks ago online and seem to be unable to listen to anything else. God graced you all with such amazing talent and thank you for sharing it with all of us. For me the best part of watching all of your performances is the absolute love, joy and pride you show for each other. It makes the beautiful music so much more sweet.

What I love about the Peterson family is that they are not overcome with their expertise , meaning their beautiful voices, their amazing skills on the instrument and they are just beautiful to look at , but it doesn't affect them, they are just plain old folks like we are, sharing what talent God has given them with us, God bless the Petersons and thank you all very much.
This has been one of my favorite songs for most of my life. The Petersen have done a great job with this song.
Also, I like the yodel. Seems to fit.
This girl just blows my mind every time she sings. That is one of the most beautiful renditions of gentle on my mind since Glen Campbell and I never thought anyone can touch what he does thank you so much to the Petersons. My god this girl I love her she’s incredible
John Hartford wrote this song
Something about the quality of her voice, the tone , the timbre, that is extraordinarily pleasing to my ear too.
This is my favorite rendition, also. Love it so much.
I have always loved screaming guitars of heavy metal. The music being made in this video is simply amazing. This young ladies voice is a godsend to the world. I'll never stop listening to heavy metal but you can teach this old dog a new trick.
Where has this been all my life??
This may be the most covered song in history, but no one has ever done it better. I'm glad they gave this young lady the lead on it!
Gentle On My Mind has long been a favorite song of mine and one that I wish I could have written. This is one of the best versions I've ever heard.
Love this rendition. The sweet voice and great instrumentals. Top notch!
Every time I watch you guys I really can’t believe why your not on every tv station world wide. Voices that would melt fire, & music that would freeze ice. Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful
I've listened to this dozen's of time versus other takes including the originals and yours's is by FAR the best. Julianne does a great job with some very complex lyrics and the sound is just fantastic! You guy's have a sound all your own and I pray God continues to touch you and to provide music to old musicians like me!
I've been a bluegrass musician for almost 35 years. You guys are all very talented musicians. I was impressed that you make it look so easy.
And why was the bass player way in the back? Support your local bass player ya'll.
Oh and Julianne, wow, you remind me of a young Allison Krauss. Keep up the great work.
I haven’t heard them before this vid just came up in my feed. Awesome stuff. My style. Loved it. Lead singer could loosen up her jaw a tad and take some diction advice from Jim Reeves.
I saw some comments re: Allison Krauss. Appropriate. The quality is there, just needs the diction and phonetics imho.
Very listenable.
Julianne I love your voice so much! When I listen to you singing, everything it's fine in my life :) My best wishes from Argentina!
when I listen to them period my depression goes away.
Julianne's voice is perfect for this song. It is captivating.. So contagious to hear this amazing yet extremely unique voice. Johnny Cash had a unique voice but Julianne's is unique and way way better than Johnny. I love love love your voice young lady., It is like God made you to sing this way and I cannot ever imagine anyone ever even able to copy your sound. Powerful inspiring and moving.
I love her voice as well but to compare her voice to Johnny Cash’s is ridiculous on many levels.
@@darrenpickens5608 I agree. Johnny is not even in her league.
Real Americans at their best. Awesome performance; keep them coming.
All of your songs bring me to tears - such purity - such honesty - just as it should be. Your family are blessed above and beyond.
David Duff, completely agree
I thought it was just me!
Amen brother!
I also thought it was just me. Hearing them play, and particularly this song, warms my soul.
I don't think this young lady knows how beautiful she and her voice are, maybe thats a good thing. She's absolutely perfect!
Never a disappointment! The Petersens have the wonderful ability to take any song and make it even better with so much life, joy and happiness!
