The real shame is that a LOT of young people (even those who like country music) don’t know how great most of these people sitting around on this show actually were.
Mega talented writers and musicians.
I could play that a thousand times, and it sounds better every time.
All the historical talent on that stage, we’re losing them one by one, it’s a sad day every time one of them passes. Willie, Roy Clark and Chet Adkins admiring Glens skill on that guitar as well as the rest of them, there isn’t any body in the new generation that can touch Glens talent.
indeed. Man that solo just so smooth.
When you see the smiles of his contemporaries you know he’s special.
Glen was so such a great player that the best musicians of the time were impressed. That doesn’t happen.
Roy Clark listening to and clearly enjoying Glen Campbell's incredible guitar work. Two absolute masters of their craft right there.
Indeed....we will not see that greatness of talent again.
Also Chet Atkins and Willie Nelson.
Now Bubba that's what I was telling my Niece
I always believed that Glen is one of the greatest all around musician of all time.
I agree
Because he is......
His greatest song rip
Without a doubt. What a great talent.
1000% agreed!
Some nights the haunting pulls me back..... one of the most underrated guitar players of all time.....Roy Clark's face says it all
amen
Couldn't agree more 👏
and I wish Roy had chimed in, to me all the he Haw stuff helped Roy to remain a bit in the shadow relative to his talent. His voice, too, better than many. I wish he and Glenn had toured together, played and sung together.
@@jimquantic Roy and Glenn were 'compadres' and played together as "dueling guitarists" many times. (from what I've seen over the years) Different yet equally great, IMO. Never saw the whole show, but seems to me Roy was letting his colleague have his moment. I've always thought Roy Clark was a monster talent on guitar (along with Chet Atkins)
And it doesn't get any better than that. Brings back a ton of memories, a simpler time.
Glen Campbell had so many gifts that it almost seemed unfair. He played brilliantly, sang wonderfully, wrote so many terrific songs and could even act very well. He is sorely missed.
when he was raised , I recall him saying they didnt even have electricity.
Muy bue no
Glen was a studio musician. It doesn't get any better than that. RIP Glen, your legacy will forever be alive!
When Roy Clark and Chet Atkins are sitting in Awe of a guy you know you’re seeing something really special.
When THE great Roy Clark looks at you with utter admiration in his eyes, you've gotta know you're special...!!! I loved you Glen, I always will.
I thought the same thing. Roy Clark was one of the best pop music guitarists ever, and to see his admiration for Glen is truly special.
If I was rich enough I’d go nowhere without a band like that behind me! Absolute first class musicians, first few bars and boom there they are in the groove. I always rated Glen as a fellow guitarist what he does here is sheer perfection.
When you are on stage with Roy Clark and Chet Atkins and are the best guitarist of the bunch...
When Glen looks around and sees all those famous faces showing him admiration and affection.
I'm a guitar player for over 50 years. I play blues and jazz. When I see this video I stop everything, listen and SMILE. This is an absolutely terrific exhibition of EXCELLENT Guitar playing. The love that comes out, and the talent are the best. This is a great picker if I ever heard one.
I remember hearing this when I was kid back in the 60s.
Brilliant....dont think enough people realise just how good Glen was!!!
Watch the clip of what Alice Cooper has to say about Glenn.

I know exactly where I was…. Recently returned from Afghanistan… I was with my wife of 30 years at a restaurant … I had just taken a bite… and my wife mentioned that Glenn had passed away… and the gentle tears flowed.
He was with me in Vietnam whenever I got out
Of the field he made Life alot easier.
Thank you Glen Campbell.
I've watched another copy of this clip maybe a thousand times and every time it chokes me up. Glen was a once-in-a-lifetime talent, and God blessed us by letting it be in our lifetimes. Happy birthday, Glen!
i watched that other clip 1000 times as well. when he says “I’ll play one,” he shows is musical genius. what a masterpiece
@@Jrfsfnm1 Totally
Crystal Gale smiling next to you while you strum a guitar, I’d fall to pieces. Roy Clark is watching so intently and Glen knows he’s watching - and Roy knows Glen knows! Two juggernauts of country and guitar playing in general. Simply one of the best songs ever.
Talent that is awe inspiring. Hits me hard too John.
John Holton. I live in Scotland a would have paid any money to go to America and be there to listen to this. I only recently fully appreciated Glen from seeing him on these UA-cam clips. Adorable and out of this world the joy he brings singing this song.xx
20 years ago I would've dismissed this without even listening because of the genre. Now it causes goosebumps and brings a tear to my eye. Glen was such a talent. So nice to see all these musical geniuses sitting around enjoying each other's ability.
I could not have said it better , feel the very same way
Country back then was a much better, classier Country genre. More soulful and inspired.
I think most of us go through a similar journey- it’s probably called music maturity
Yes...
Same here.
The guitar solo shows how talented Glen was. RIP
I once thought that I hated country music. But Glen Campbell and many of the people he's surrounded by here, including Chet Atkins, Willie Nelson, Crystal Gayle, Roy Clark, et al., were part of the tradition of country and bluegrass music that was a real American artform. What country music evolved into is a commercial mess of bland, homogenous crap. Hearing this song really surprised me by taking me back to my childhood in the 1960s. He was a bigger part of it than I ever noticed.
I never get tired of this clip....just look at the faces of country music's greatest as Glen picks.
thats an insane amount of talent on that stage !
When Roy Clark is the second or third best guitarist in the group then yes, it's an insane amount of talent assembled.
Willies face after Glenn’s solo said it all.
@@brucebernard994I thought Chet was sitting on the front row.
Roy Clark admiring Glenn says it all ! Roy was as good as they get too !! I'm 65 and almost know them !
One of the most underrecognized and unappreciated country stars ever. Such a great guitar picker, writer and performer. One of my favorite songs.
?
He did not write the song in the video, but everybody knows who Glen is.
No your wrong he was so big back in the 60'70's he had his own show ,he toured he was loved and very much appreciated.
He was appreciated by those who loved his voice and musical choices.
John Hartford, what a songwriter
When one looks close and sees the genuine admiration from his peers, especially those who the camera focuses on on, including Roy Clark and Chet Atkins, it give one hope that there are very good human beings on this planet.
Damn I miss real country music like these legends made
From the first note that Glenn played they all remembered how great Glenn Campbell is and what he has done for Country music ! Everyone in the rooms owes a debt of gratitude to Glenn Campbell for bringing Country music to the main stream with the Glenn Campbell Goodtime Hour TV show ! Glenn was one of the Greats that never got enough credit in my opinion!
I cry when i think we lost such a talent and a gentleman too
Glen was a very great singer, I love him and his Songs, I will never forget him...best regards from Henry, Berlin. 😢
I have always loved this clip. Sadly, it reminds me of the great talent that we have lost. I remember seeing Glen and Guitar Man Jerry Reed back in 1970 at the Arkansas State Fair. They were to guitar what Ray is to the keyboard.
Patrick Beck wow you so lucky. U Americans have access to the best singers.!! From Scotland. X best wishes.
They surely in Heaven now playing for our God, one day we will join them and enjoy it for the rest of our eternal life.
Even a teenage rocker like me, in the sixties, would turn up Glen when one of his songs came on the radio. Much later I realized that the Nashville cats were the most talented music makers on the planet.
02:31 That says it all right there. Look at the smiles on all of those faces. Glen has the admiration and respect of everyone of his fellow artists on that stage. My oh my, Glen was a supreme talent. Growing up, our family always watched “The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour”.
TheCarnivalGuy. This clip also gets me with the smiles and appreciation from his fellow musicians. I can watch this over and over.xxxx
And over and over. You’re in Scotland - I’m in Western Australia - but the whole world has to love this.
And Gene Watson at the end of the solo...OH YEAH!!!!
When Roy Clark is enjoying himself you know it’s good!
I used to listen to a country music station, late night. And the DJ knew what folks who were up at that late hour wanted to hear. He'd play blocks of music, from certain stars. He played Glen Campbell music one night. RIP Glen. Your were the master.
The smiles of the others after the guitar solo says ok we have no shot.
Absolute Legend, sadly missed missed by million n millions of people on this Planet, RIP Glen , we all still love you 😊
What a guitar player! What a talent!
Glen was never a person to take the easy way. How he always has to play every note, key change and chord on his guitar still blows me away.
Roy Clark's got that look........"ok. Competition"
And sure, even Willie & Crystal enjoying Glen's talent !!!
This is a wonderful performance. I especially love the expression on Roy Clark's face as he listens and watches Glen. Roy has the wonder and admiration of a boy watching one of his heroes. It makes me admire them both even more.
Glenn Campbell and Roy Clark were as good or better than any other guitarists.
You couldn't afford to get this level of talent together today.
And Roy was one of Glenn's heroes as well.
You can't put Roy Clark in Glen Cambell's category of talent. Roy could make you think he was great by his comedy antics and pretending it was so difficult, but he made a lot of mistakes and covered them up by acting silly, which the people loved and interpreted that as being great. But if you played guitar you would see the difference in Cambells talent and Roy Clark or any other country guitarist's capabilities.
I was 6 or 7 years old when Glens variety show debuted on national television. My oldest brother who then bared a stark resemblance to Glen, was deployed to Vietnam. My brother had a band before joining the Marines. So on the night the show aired, the phone began to ring from many of our neighbors who thought the guy they were watching on television was my oldest brother under a stage name. This went on for a couple more weeks to the point my parents started to question Ricks whereabouts. Glen Campbell has given all of us so many wonderful songs that helped us to navigate life just a little easier and funnier at times. Rest easy Glen and thanks for the many memories.
We saw Glen at his last tour at the Paramount Theater in Seattle. RIP forever.😊
I saw Glen live in 2005, right before he got really sick. The first half of the show was his classics and the second half was him singing Christmas songs. What and unbelievable experience
One of the greatest guitarists ever
Why is there no audience? The talent on this stage is worthy of a full stadium.
Glen Campbell was such a great guitar player.
God must have smiled when He made and placed all that talent in Glen Campbell...everytime Glen played and sang he proved God's exsistance.
So much talent in that room and Roy Clark and everyone else was totally in awe of Glen : ))))))
Roy had a (jealous) smile frozen to his face the whole time because, though he himself was a great picker, Glen left him in the dust and Roy knew it! He put on a brave face, to his credit, but Glen's clean lines just dusted everything.
@@texasaggie75 I do not think it was jealousy all. He Genuinely was in awe of Glenn’s phenomenal talent.
@@grayson1946 ok.
Roy could play, too.
Glen Campbell was a class act and his guitar playing is as good as anything on the planet 👏
Even Chet Atkins and Roy Clark were impressed
my god was Glen talented. Waylon is my favorite but man Glen has so much talent. Must be the greatest guitar player in country music history. Am I right? Jerry Reed, Vince Gill and Keith Urban are all great. But wow is Glen incredible
Roy Clark is arguably one of the best also.
Glen Campbell, Roy Clark, Chet Atkins, Jerry Reed should have their own version of Mt. Rushmore as the top guitar players ever..certainly in Country Music, and a good case could be made for any music genr. Maybe Vince Gill as an alternate lol...Keith Urban, Willie Nelson, Brad Paisley, and Ricky Skaggs could make good arguments for their own inclusion too...but Glen, Roy, Chet, and Jerry are THE top dogs and my mind can't be changed on them.
@@GLH5MHILciao amico!🙋😊💘🌅
I fell in love with this man back in 19 68. I was 15 . Loved him ever since . An amazing talent . God bless you Glen Campbell.❤️
Good morning. I too was 15 in 1968. In my opinion Glen Campbell was THE most underrated guitar player. Period. And one helluva singer/songwriter also. I have admired this man my whole life. Such a talent. Pretty sure he is missed by many. Myself included. RIP kind sir. You made the world a better place.
@@bobvogel2412 wonderfully put . You have said everything I wanted to say and more !👏👏👏👏
All those smiling faces. Great performance.
Glen could flat out play.
One Big Jam Session of the greatest country music gang! They all bring back great memories!
Glen is smooth like glass and can char a guitar from the lightning in his fingers none finer . Awesome!
"Char a guitar". I'll remember that - nice!
Una delle piu belle canzoni di Glen.... 😊😍😘😘🎶🎶💘❤️💯💯💋🍀
The rhythm of this song is truly captivating.
Glen impressed some pretty good guitar pickers there.
I was first introduced to the music of John Hartford in the early 70's and was a big fan of Gentle on my mind before Glen recorded it. His cover of this wonderful Hartford song became very popular and made Hartford a rich man. What I always appreciated about Glen is that he always gave John credit for the song.
When you hypnotize absolute legends around you with your talent. He was universally respected by artists from ALL genres. He was a master musician and equally wonderful human being.
Glen Campbell was a great talent. I'm sorry to say I did not appreciate him in my youth. Now, because of people keeping his reputation alive I'm completely transformed to a huge fan. The man had no formal training. Amazing. I have a back up track of Gentle On My Mind and am wearing it out singing along while driving. Also bought Glen's Greatest Hits with all the great Jimmy Web songs.
Now thats real fucken talent 🤘🤘🤘
We were blessed to have him and the enduring gifts he left us !
I'm so glad my parents introduced me to artists like Glen Campbell. The world is poorer for the absence of this caliber of talent here.
If I can add to your post... and the world is richer for him having shared his musical gifts with us.
Two musical geniuses: Glenn and Ray. ❤❤❤❤. Glenn you are sorely missed.😢
Just watched Glen's last performance singing "Gentle on my Mind." Very sad for all of us. My Heart goes out to Glen's wife and family. My Sincere condolences.
Thankyou for the Courage all of you to show it.
I humbly pay my deepest respects to Glen and his GOD given talents. One of the finest (in my opinion) guitar players and vocalists...ever!
Glen's performance of "Gentle on my Mind" hosted by Ralph Emery is truly wonderful to listen to and watch.
Thankyou for the Great memories Glen..you've gone to a far better Resting Place...
I know that we honor people and their greatness in special tributes like Kennedy Center Honores, and Life Time Achievement awards, and the like. But it seems like we never truly understand how terrific they were untill their gone.
Not many good pickers or song writers can sing, Glen was great at both!
Such phrasing and melodic intelligence! Glenn's guitar playing isn't human! When Roy Clark is looking over impressed.....holy cow!
And Chet Atkins...
@@nickmariotti4241 And all 3 would point at the other 2 and say those guys were better
@@jmazoso Agreed. I have to wonder how it was that Roy and Glen never officially got the "c.g.p." degree from Chet. I can only assume it was on Chet's "to do" list. Or Chet felt that they were better than he was and so it wouldn't be appropriate for him to presume to "honor" them.
Bobby Bare is one of my favorite country singer of all time.
Glen Campbell's music often showed on both country and American TOP 40 charts at the same time
Wondering what Ched Atkins was thinking while looking at Glen’s guitar picking….” I can do that”. The musical talent in that room was incredible to see. 👍👍👍
Crystal Gayle had that look of a teenage girl staring at her crush or idol when Glen was tickling his guitar at 2:40. PRICELESS!
Look at those legends behind him wow..
Wow, that steel player is awesome
He (she?) sure was. Very nice and tasteful arrangement.
Agreed - I'd love to see the credits for the backup band. Is there a chance it was John Hughey? He was Conway Twitty's steel player and has always been my favorite.
Glen was a world-class, virtuoso guitarist. The looks on the faces of the esteemed members in the audience say it all. They were humbled.
@@willschrankciao Will! 🙋♀️😍😘💘🍀
Watching this makes like sweeter.
My buddy and I saw Glen back in the eighties. We sat 40 rows up in a half empty civic auditorium and tried to chat up a couple of unfettered young ladies. Glen told us to "shut up up there". So we did.
Rob Cale lol 😆
Good thing y'all listened! Lol
I've loved this song since it came out (yeah, I'm old), but this is the best rendition ever. I especially like watching the drummer -- he's definitely into it; maybe he knew how special this session was
Hard to believe all that talent in one room, but Glen is number one.
More talent on that stage than anyone can ever imagine!
He is one of the greatest musicians of all time
There are 3 of the greatest guitarists in music in that room! Chet Atkins pickin along is a great combo....
Beautiful guitar solo. So melodic.
Glen was great singer song writer and guitar player. He was really talented.
Glenn performed on countless recordings in the studio (wrecking crew) On Strangers in the night, River deep Mountain high, Johnny Angel, Good vibrations and most of all the early beach boy records. Watch the movie “baby the rain must fall” with Steve McQueen that’s Glen Campbell on guitar and Hal Blaine on drums in the movie. See what Alice Cooper said about Glenn!!!! A lot of the hit songs back in the day, was Glenn Campbell, Leon Russell, Hal Blaine, Tommy Tedesco and so many other great session musicians that actually played the music on the records you were listening to.
Respect.
the Van Halen of country music!
Wow. Roy Clark likin' ya pickin' is a supreme compliment.
True talent, brilliant👏👏👏🙌
Not to take away from Waylon...Willie...Ray Stevens...and of course...all the other stars...AND Glen Campbell --- BUT...Crystal Gale...is Still an Angel on my mind!! WOWWEEEE...that woman is GORGEOUS!!!
Ohh man this song never gets old!! Listen to it on a daily basis!
Look at who the audience comprises of. A to Z of EVERYONE i n the business...!! Says it all.
When America was America....telling it like it is....
Main thing with me I had a lot of idols when I was a kid. They rise and fall in your head. Batman Lionel Bart so on. Shani Wallis. Bit the thing about Glen Campbell he had such a great personality. Fame never went to his head. He was always down to earth. And I'm still a fan now and probably always will b3.
Glen Campbell, absolutely the most elite
