      They are and are not the same size, depending on what sort of size you talk about. The illusion works because of the ambiguity of the word "size".
      The animation shows that their *apparent* size is the same, sure.
      But in order to take a real picture that looks like this, you would actually need the second car to be bigger that the first one, and the last one even bigger.

      +sdrtyrty rtyuty That is one thing I have learnt after following Vsauce for quite a while, you never judge based on the title or thumbnail you just get right into the video and prepare to be surprised. Unlike other channels the best way to do it is just click on anything randomly without paying much attention and when a new video comes out you don't say "that doesn't sound very interesting" you just watch it.

    I don't know if this is true, but I heard somewhere that the reason medieval paintings look so unrealistic is because of a religious mentality at the time that representing the human form accurately was somehow glorifying it and made it akin to a form of idolatry.

    This is the only vsauce video which I thought was not explained well. I had to search somewhere else to understand moon terminator illusion. This happened because vsause has a style of mixing multiple concepts and establishing relationships between them. Here he tried geometrically to demonstrate the illusion which faded as he drifted perspective projection in general. It would have been awesome he had exclusively talked about the illusion and dived deeper into the geometrical aspects.

      I agree. It sort of left the moon and stayed away. For the longest time I could not get the moon. I was one of those idiots who thought the line was from us in the way I think. I came into this one with an understanding already after I got myself to get it right awhile back. I trained my perception and I honestly find it intuitive now. I instantly see three billiard balls floating in black water, one shining a beam, with me on another lol. Took forever to get the visage though, but once in, it's very orientating.

    As to why the "child-like" perspective was popular in art in medieval times, an important feature of pre-Renaissance painting was that size of subjects were often indicators of importance and reputation. A powerful figure, like the ruler or a religious leader, would be depicted larger than less important figures within the same painting or work of art, completely disregarding the demands of mathematical perspective. You could also observe this with soldiers in terms of their ranks in war depictions. Uncoincidentally, the progressive ideas that developed alongside Renaissance, such as humanism and the decentralization of power, went hand in hand with the shift of perspective in art.

    It's fascinating that modern world still adds something to the artist techniques. Take the Depth of field that is absent from most old paintings. And even if the artist as a scientist did depth of field effect on the painting because the artist itself knew about it due to using optic mechanism, common folks even couldn't imagine what is happening on the picture. So only after it was wide spread because of cinema and cameras, artists started to use it often

    Michael's face has depth in real life, but the limited perspective his icon gives makes it look like his face is "rolled out" on the icon, rather than it just being a close-up.

    • @DeputyBurbank
      @DeputyBurbank 9 років тому +9

      k- hitman I think even though we can comprehend the illusions, we are hard wired to ignore the reality behind them. Presumably, because survival has been dependent on these types of interpretations: how close is the lion? Which direction is it coming from? How deep is that gorge? Can I jump over this gap? etc..
      However, why is the moon's crescent not aligned with the sun? ... not as important for survival.

      The reason we can't control what we see and why illusions still effect us is that we can't control all of our brain (only 10 %) which is also the reason we can't control things like our metabolism and if we feel pain or not, our brains are not wired to turn off nerve endings in our body hence the reason we feel pain if you were to say, cut yourself, if we could infact gain access to our whole brain, we could easily do things such as alter the reality of our own perspectives, but since we don't have that area of intelligence unlocked yet, there is no way that we can change what we see. And on that note. INTERESTS RATES, ARE ZEROOOOOO

      Argo Nax wave propogation through a medium takes energy... so, unlike light traveling through a vacuum, the sound wouldn't go very far, but if you have seen Star Wars you know you can hear laser blasters firing in space just fine..

    • @RenzSLV
      @RenzSLV 9 років тому +26

      Stars are pretty much like bells. Our Sun, if it could be heard through the vacuum of space, vibrates with a song of many frequencies similar to the ringing of cathedral bells that are each hitting at different notes. If you have been near a cathedral you may notice that as the bells get louder, they chime at certain pitches when they are simultaneously rung.
      The Sun is similar in that it belts out rhythmic bass thumps over its background hum when certain frequencies overlap with one another. If space were replaced with air and we could hear the Sun, it would be incredibly noisy - the output of the Sun is equivalent to 10 million keys, or notes, of a piano. In fact you would struggle to hear little else! Throwing out an energy of 383 yottawatts per second, we get a translation of 290 decibels which makes for a very, very loud Sun indeed.
      However, at a distance of 92,957,130 miles from the Sun, things start to change and the monstrous sound of our star doesn’t seem that loud at all. Sound intensity decreases with distance, which means that the Sun would deliver a much smaller 125 decibels to the surface of our planet. In comparison, 120 decibels is a train horn about one metre away whereas 130 decibels is physical pain.
      In general, the lower the pitch, the bigger the star. Additionally, the sound they make depends on their age as well as their chemical composition. In short, the distance from a star will vary depending on these factors.
      GG copy paste :)

    I have often observed this so-called illusion, and I've often pointed it out to people. I have not yet met anyone who says that they had already observed it before I showed it to them. When I just describe it to people, they often come up with an explanation for it, and then admit that they have never observed the phenomenon. This man is seemingly trying to explain it, yet I feel even further from understanding it after listening to him. It's there for everyone to see, and yet.....

    • @ZipplyZane
      @ZipplyZane Рік тому +1

      To put it as simply as I can: the illusion is caused by the fact the sun is so much further away than the moon. Most of the light hits the part of the moon that doesn't face us.
      To unsee it myself, I hold up my hand and pretend that I'm actually holding the moon in my hand. Then I imagine a 3-D line connecting the two.

Since the parts of the field further from you than your point are passing more slowly than it, and the parts of the field closer to you than your point are passing more quickly than it, the space around your point should appear to rotate like a whirlpool.

    So it takes more skill to draw something through the eyes of a child than an adult? Does that mean my awful drawings of which look like they were done by a child because of my poor artistic skills are, in actuality, more skillful than an artist?!
    That's obviously wrong, but I'm sticking with it.

      blobbem I can only imagine the intent of the statement is that its easy to learn structure and conventions but very difficult to break free of them. Drawing well outside of your comfort zone and in the realm of things that aren't exactly easy to picture through the mind's eye can be difficult.
      Of course, it could be artist-wank (thanks Andy Warhol for making me cynical about art), but who knows~

Honest to God, didn't look away from the moon for like, at least 30 minutes. I was mesmerized by how fast it must have been moving to keep up with me because I thought it was following. lol

  • @EmdrGreg

    Not sure, but I think this is at least related: on a day when the sun and moon are both in the sky and you are able to stand in the sunlight while viewing the moon, take something like a tennis ball and hold it out at arm's length so that it covers the moon. You will notice that the shadow on the ball matches the shadow on the moon. This will be particularly interesting if the moon terminator illusion is in effect and it probably will be. When I do this, and I realize that the sun's light is hitting the moon at virtually the same angle as the sun hitting the earth, this helps to dispel the illusion. The face of the sun is close to a million miles across (860,000 miles roughly?), and the moon is only about 240,000 miles from earth. The sun washes the earth-moon system with light; it isn't a pinpoint in space producing any kind of noticeable angle. If I could stand on the spot on the moon corresponding to the spot I occupy on earth, the sun would be in virtually the same position in the sky relative to me. This tennis ball idea isn't original with me, but I have no recollection when/how I learned it.
