They are and are not the same size, depending on what sort of size you talk about. The illusion works because of the ambiguity of the word "size".
The animation shows that their *apparent* size is the same, sure.
But in order to take a real picture that looks like this, you would actually need the second car to be bigger that the first one, and the last one even bigger.

I just realized that the most interesting Vsauce videos are the ones with the boring titles.

+Chicken Delight131 Just sounds like some fiction. I would have never even clicked on the thumbnail if it wasnt for the fact that I couldnt find another vsauce video that I havent watched.
+sdrtyrty rtyuty That is one thing I have learnt after following Vsauce for quite a while, you never judge based on the title or thumbnail you just get right into the video and prepare to be surprised. Unlike other channels the best way to do it is just click on anything randomly without paying much attention and when a new video comes out you don't say "that doesn't sound very interesting" you just watch it.

Yea, me too..

***** I thought it was going to be the lunar wave conspiracy, google it if u don't know what I'm talking about
I don't know if this is true, but I heard somewhere that the reason medieval paintings look so unrealistic is because of a religious mentality at the time that representing the human form accurately was somehow glorifying it and made it akin to a form of idolatry.

This is the only vsauce video which I thought was not explained well. I had to search somewhere else to understand moon terminator illusion. This happened because vsause has a style of mixing multiple concepts and establishing relationships between them. Here he tried geometrically to demonstrate the illusion which faded as he drifted perspective projection in general. It would have been awesome he had exclusively talked about the illusion and dived deeper into the geometrical aspects.
I agree. It sort of left the moon and stayed away. For the longest time I could not get the moon. I was one of those idiots who thought the line was from us in the way I think. I came into this one with an understanding already after I got myself to get it right awhile back. I trained my perception and I honestly find it intuitive now. I instantly see three billiard balls floating in black water, one shining a beam, with me on another lol. Took forever to get the visage though, but once in, it's very orientating.
What sources were more useful to understand it?
i like to rewatch older vsauce videos , nodding my head intently holding my chin as if i were a professor
instently?
+PhysixProductions They said intently.
Physix?
what does that mean?
You appear to have thought that the OP said spelled instantly wrong. You misread the word he actually typed as *instently*. He typed intently.
What does intently mean
As to why the "child-like" perspective was popular in art in medieval times, an important feature of pre-Renaissance painting was that size of subjects were often indicators of importance and reputation. A powerful figure, like the ruler or a religious leader, would be depicted larger than less important figures within the same painting or work of art, completely disregarding the demands of mathematical perspective. You could also observe this with soldiers in terms of their ranks in war depictions. Uncoincidentally, the progressive ideas that developed alongside Renaissance, such as humanism and the decentralization of power, went hand in hand with the shift of perspective in art.

It would be so cool to use this information to enhance roller coaster experiences... adding visuals that make it appear you are going faster or in a weird direction without actually changing the mechanics of the roller coaster...
It's fascinating that modern world still adds something to the artist techniques. Take the Depth of field that is absent from most old paintings. And even if the artist as a scientist did depth of field effect on the painting because the artist itself knew about it due to using optic mechanism, common folks even couldn't imagine what is happening on the picture. So only after it was wide spread because of cinema and cameras, artists started to use it often

Michael's face has depth in real life, but the limited perspective his icon gives makes it look like his face is "rolled out" on the icon, rather than it just being a close-up.

I will never stop being amazed at all the awesome things our brains do without us even knowing, but also how easily it can be tricked.
SagBag We are our brains. There is no separation
***** That wasn't my intention. I meant the functions the human brain can perform without our conscious knowledge.
SagBag I'm amazed by it too. The eye can see at around 570MP which is astounding. Sometimes when recording, my camera stalls since it can't push 1080p onto an SD card fast enough. The brain is a powerhouse!
LittleSolarSystem Give it a few hundred years and I bet we'll have cameras and screens recording and displaying 570MP or more.
If only we could live long enough to see that happen..
Nat Tardis Haha. The one thing I'd love to see before I die is immortality technology :)
People in the beginning must’ve questioned why there was a guy sitting in front of a camera not moving
I wish you were every teacher on earth
each lesson comes with its own fully furnished video explaining everything we need to know and beyond to solidify our prior knowledge
what is really amazing to me is how we (and so our brains) can understand what causes these illusions and effects, and yet still can't help but see them, unable to correct them.
k- hitman I think even though we can comprehend the illusions, we are hard wired to ignore the reality behind them. Presumably, because survival has been dependent on these types of interpretations: how close is the lion? Which direction is it coming from? How deep is that gorge? Can I jump over this gap? etc..
However, why is the moon's crescent not aligned with the sun? ... not as important for survival.
k- hitman because we dont have the right sensors to analyze what we see would this be correct
Yeah correct them to what? We see things how they really look.
k- hitman It's just like how we humans know what's good but still do evil things , we are super smart as a species but at the same time we have major flaws , were just walking contradictions.
The reason we can't control what we see and why illusions still effect us is that we can't control all of our brain (only 10 %) which is also the reason we can't control things like our metabolism and if we feel pain or not, our brains are not wired to turn off nerve endings in our body hence the reason we feel pain if you were to say, cut yourself, if we could infact gain access to our whole brain, we could easily do things such as alter the reality of our own perspectives, but since we don't have that area of intelligence unlocked yet, there is no way that we can change what we see. And on that note. INTERESTS RATES, ARE ZEROOOOOO
This channel blows my mind with each and every video.

András Fogarasi Watch his video on flat earth and ask that question again. To be honest the entire debate is stupid. Why does it matter? Airplanes fly with their map things just fine. what if Space had the atmospheric properties to allow sound to travel in space
if so how loud is Space?
There is no sound in space
Paul Nguyen i know there isn't, but what if it had the properties to allow sound to travel as if it was inside our atmosphere, read my comment more carefully next time
Argo Nax wave propogation through a medium takes energy... so, unlike light traveling through a vacuum, the sound wouldn't go very far, but if you have seen Star Wars you know you can hear laser blasters firing in space just fine..
Stars are pretty much like bells. Our Sun, if it could be heard through the vacuum of space, vibrates with a song of many frequencies similar to the ringing of cathedral bells that are each hitting at different notes. If you have been near a cathedral you may notice that as the bells get louder, they chime at certain pitches when they are simultaneously rung.
The Sun is similar in that it belts out rhythmic bass thumps over its background hum when certain frequencies overlap with one another. If space were replaced with air and we could hear the Sun, it would be incredibly noisy - the output of the Sun is equivalent to 10 million keys, or notes, of a piano. In fact you would struggle to hear little else! Throwing out an energy of 383 yottawatts per second, we get a translation of 290 decibels which makes for a very, very loud Sun indeed.
However, at a distance of 92,957,130 miles from the Sun, things start to change and the monstrous sound of our star doesn’t seem that loud at all. Sound intensity decreases with distance, which means that the Sun would deliver a much smaller 125 decibels to the surface of our planet. In comparison, 120 decibels is a train horn about one metre away whereas 130 decibels is physical pain.
In general, the lower the pitch, the bigger the star. Additionally, the sound they make depends on their age as well as their chemical composition. In short, the distance from a star will vary depending on these factors.
GG copy paste :)
Argo Nax Forget VSauce, you might as well do your own videos lol. That was actually ridiculously intriguing!

The starfield effect exists in minecraft. The game increases your field of view when you drink a speed potion, so that you more of your screen appears to be going fast and less of it comprises of slow moving objects. This effect is mainly used to make it appear that you're going much faster than you really are, possibly to persuade players to use potions and play the game evenly.

Love how a video about the “Moon Terminator Illusion” starts off with Michael sitting in a field vibing
I have often observed this so-called illusion, and I've often pointed it out to people. I have not yet met anyone who says that they had already observed it before I showed it to them. When I just describe it to people, they often come up with an explanation for it, and then admit that they have never observed the phenomenon. This man is seemingly trying to explain it, yet I feel even further from understanding it after listening to him. It's there for everyone to see, and yet.....
To put it as simply as I can: the illusion is caused by the fact the sun is so much further away than the moon. Most of the light hits the part of the moon that doesn't face us.
To unsee it myself, I hold up my hand and pretend that I'm actually holding the moon in my hand. Then I imagine a 3-D line connecting the two.
The "Terminator" is always perpendicular to the ecliptic. The effect seems to be more noticeable when the ecliptic is riding very high in the sky.
I expected an illusion that made the moon look like the face of Arnold Schwarzenegger

The reason we don't see the line being tilted one way or the other is because the camera's perspective is relative to the horizon to the line at the top. this means we would have to tilt our head to the horizon of the line. Then we will see the tilt in the line.

damn, I wish I could paint as beautifully as those Renaissance artists. I can't even draw a straight line without getting frustrated
Don't worry buddy, those guys took many many years of non stop practice to learn how to paint like that.
I know that a lot of them had a natural born talent, but still, practice inevitable...
"natural born talent" Actually nope, it's just that some kids don't abandon drawing and are then seen as "gifted" because they draw better than their fellows. But there is no such thing as natural born talent, I've been drawing my whole life and it's just and only practice and learning.
Klymahnn Even better, it shows that there is hope for all of us
Learning a skill is actually pretty fast if you do it regularly. I've seen people learning to draw really well in a few months.
+Klymahnn Oh yeah, that's why I like that saying "Practise makes perfection" (idk if that's how you would say in english)

Here's something to entertain you if you happen to be passing a field or something similar on a car ride (in which you are not the driver). Look at one point on the field and stay on that point. Since the parts of the field further from you than your point are passing more slowly than it, and the parts of the field closer to you than your point are passing more quickly than it, the space around your point should appear to rotate like a whirlpool.
So it takes more skill to draw something through the eyes of a child than an adult? Does that mean my awful drawings of which look like they were done by a child because of my poor artistic skills are, in actuality, more skillful than an artist?!
That's obviously wrong, but I'm sticking with it.
blobbem I can only imagine the intent of the statement is that its easy to learn structure and conventions but very difficult to break free of them. Drawing well outside of your comfort zone and in the realm of things that aren't exactly easy to picture through the mind's eye can be difficult.
Of course, it could be artist-wank (thanks Andy Warhol for making me cynical about art), but who knows~
It's hard to be intentionally bad.
blobbem I am glad there are people out there like you, who can think for themselves and come to their own conclusions. Picasso is nothing more than a garbage seller, a scammer, who convinced very rich people that his shit was worth a lot of money.
lopenash No, it's not.
***** Properly done drawings which show something interesting are more interesting than Picasso's garbage.
This really blew my mind. I never noticed the terminator illusion before actually. As a visual artist I know about perspective and parallax and all that, but the moon-sun thing never even occurred to me because I never noticed it... until now. Kudos! These videos are fantastic
0:49 you know when that beat drops you're about to get some mad knowledge thrown at you
Love this one. Complex. But simple

Joe Maxpayne Vsauce was a name generated via a random word generator. Check out the life of Michael Stevens
ohh my poor brain lol, but so interesting. I would always wonder when I was little why it seemed like the moon "followed" you and barely moved.
I used to when in the car for very long distances, look at the moon and see if it moved all the time.
NinjaPups When I was like, 9, once when I was in the car, and we were driving on the same road not turning for quite a while, and I noticed the moon not moving. Honest to God, didn't look away from the moon for like, at least 30 minutes. I was mesmerized by how fast it must have been moving to keep up with me because I thought it was following. lol
Space Core when I was 3 or so I thought that too,I even told my mother that the moon follows us
when i was 5 i got in a fight with a friend whether the moon followed me or him.
"if it appears to be following us, then how is it following the people going in the other direction?"
- ME WHEN I WAS LIKE SEVEN
Reminds me a bit of a line from Terry Pratchett's The Lost Continent. Something about drawing a lake as a circle because I know that it is a circle, and that my perspective is an illusion.
Hey can you pass me the ketchup...
No this is the Vsauce, where's the Ketchup
*tries it*
I Love This Vsauce
I learn more watching an hour of your videos than I did in 15 years of school.

Feels weird coming back and realizing vsauce videos were about one single subject back in the day
I love these videos and their subject matter
"Here's a clue, 'clues.'" Wow, thanks for the amazing insight with that clue!
Not sure, but I think this is at least related: on a day when the sun and moon are both in the sky and you are able to stand in the sunlight while viewing the moon, take something like a tennis ball and hold it out at arm's length so that it covers the moon. You will notice that the shadow on the ball matches the shadow on the moon. This will be particularly interesting if the moon terminator illusion is in effect and it probably will be. When I do this, and I realize that the sun's light is hitting the moon at virtually the same angle as the sun hitting the earth, this helps to dispel the illusion. The face of the sun is close to a million miles across (860,000 miles roughly?), and the moon is only about 240,000 miles from earth. The sun washes the earth-moon system with light; it isn't a pinpoint in space producing any kind of noticeable angle. If I could stand on the spot on the moon corresponding to the spot I occupy on earth, the sun would be in virtually the same position in the sky relative to me. This tennis ball idea isn't original with me, but I have no recollection when/how I learned it.
the talk about the moon fallowing you on car rides made me nostalgic
Um dos vídeos mais geniais que eu já vi rs
Fuck school, im just gonna watch vsauce for the rest of my life.

I never clicked on this video thinking it was relating to the actual "Terminator"

Jake Chudnow made his intro. I'm not sure if that album was intentional but nice.
The door example and our minds adjusting seems like a good reason why it's so hard to look at broken bones. It's just incredibly hard to grasp what's going on.
