The easiest way to reduce the difficulty of a large boiler is to get a second person with a burner heating the opposite side to the one you're working on. Also merry christmas and good job with the latest part
Nice! Being new to your channel I now find myself binge watching previous series as I find them. This one is going to take awhile, but I’m sure that I’ll enjoy it.
Awesome stuff. You should make some turn screws (screw drivers) to fit those little screws perfectly. It would really be a nice touch to that locomotive, much like the original-style tooling to put those things together. Us gunsmiths use those A LOT! Love your content.
Having seen this to the end with the spatula, I'm now convinced, There is something not entirely right with you. As we say in Dutch: "Die spoort niet helemaal" What can roughly translated as "she doesn't completely track right" . Kind of appropriate for someone building a train. 😀
A big relief to have those done! Given you have the boiler & tender done, it must feel nearly finished :) Difficult parts, for sure. And I can see there's no other way to get that together. On my mogul with the same setup as yours, there is just enough - just - to get the pin in from the rear between to wheel spokes and it is not easy. On my other one the outside of the crosshead is a plate that screws on so that makes things a great deal easier.
Just knocking down those tasks! Looks sooo good. It would be fun if you did the joe pi thing and checked everything off as it's completed on a drawing or list as a progress indicator.
You are amazing your skills are impressive , I’m really enjoying this build and learning lots for my own projects thanks . Love the pink tool box too . Tapping those tiny threads had me holding my breath , keep up the great work on this build . Your videos are never boring and love your sense of humour Watching from Masterton New Zealand
Superb detailed explanation as always Thank you so much for all episodes Can't resist a challenge re assembly! Why not unscrew/ unbolt the cylinder block from the chassis, attach the connecting rods etc & slide the whole assy back on the crank pins Sorry I'll get my coat...
Really getting somewhere with this project now, Quinn - great stuff. As others have said, I think you've found the loco's name! Happy new year and all that noise.
Good thing you made the tiny screws work to keep the bearing liners in the cross heads. Whilst loctite could have worked as a solution to stop them moving, cross heads designed like that will get hot against one of the two slide bars (and which one gets hot depends if running forward or reverse), hence the loctite solution may have been at risk of failing over time if there were any issues with lubrication, tolerances, dirt etc. causing excess heating above what's normal...says he who's never built one, but happily runs steam locos at times (7.25" gauge, and formerly involved with 2'6" steam too).
This is amazing Quinn! Absolutely beautiful pieces as always and you make it look like a fifth grader could do it.... maybe.... 😅 you're really getting good at this and it's why you're one of my favorite channels. Merry Christmas and Happy holidays!
Chooch looks good. FYI, and this is too finicky for 3/4" scale...on the big ones, the wrist pin is tapered all the way through both sides of the crosshead, with the large diameter of the small end...the outer end...being a little smaller than the diameter of the bearing surface that fits in the main rod. That allowed for turning a new bearing surface when it needed repaired and still keeping the fit. They kept the pin from turning when the nut was tightened with a peg in a notch on the inner side of the crosshead.
I've added two (not that deep) holes in the front of the pistonheads on one of my steam locomotives, to be able tu turn the piston in the bore (using pointed open pliars), to adjust stroke position relative to the crosshead/crankmotion. Sadly, this feature has proved very useful multiple times, because teflon tape type piston seals/"rings" actually unwrap / tear / wear, and need replacing every once in a while, in my experience. - I actually hate that. I will replace the pistons for another sollution. The best proven sollution, is a piston ring out of PTFE (teflon) with an O-ring underneath in the groove, to provide the springing push action against the bore.
Great video Quinn! Could future Quinn make a larger engined model using multiple your max sized boilers to get enough steam volume? There could be scale Welin breech block(s).
The reason that all the ways we're thinking of for that assembly won't work is just... tight tolerances. It will look like it should fit and just refuse.
