- Hopefully this 2K barra deal doesnt blow out to 20k! Plenty of work to do over the coming weeks to get this in there, and then make it look like a car again.

Spring and metal bits are from the engine backfiring and blow the bum out of the pcv valve and droping its guts into the rocker baffle. Very common .
You deserve more subscribers Broomy..
This is gunna be so rad. Please refrain from a screamer pipe though ha ha
I think that spring is out of the pcv valve they break in the lpg engines
It was right under it, so would make sense if that’s what it is.
I do like the RX7 stuff but looking forward to seeing this project coming together more
Stoked you got the go ahead from the engineer for the Barra and look forward to the rest of the build.
Just here for the Salt Mine
I know you are probably all over it but centre the engine off the crank centreline, the middle of the valve cover isn't the middle of the engine, they are offset quite a bit, gives you more room for the hotside but less for the intake 👍
great update, looking forward to the build
get a late model territory factory power steer delete pully. works mint on my early model falcon with the barra and ya can still use a factory length belt with ac ect
Yeah it’s on my list with pedal, petrol intake and loom for the next pick a part adventure
Nice RB40 :D
Look forward to seeing more Broomy 👍
Can't re-use those cams - that minor pitting I can see on them will turn into serious damage the second you do valve springs and increase the seat pressure. Chuck a set of Kelfords in it, they're not too exxy.
The one LPG Barra I tore down had a couple of damaged lobes, what they tend to look like is craters of pitting, they were almost as wide as the roller on the rocker and maybe 5-10mm long. While yours look like they have seen a lot of work I didn't see any actual damage. Also, that oil is super dirty for an LPG engine, it probably didn't get changed for the last 50k km of it's life, should't hurt it that much though as LPG is kind like that.
Edit: Also, those plugs make it look like it may need a set of valve stem seals, easy to do while you do valve springs.
Engine came from a BF2 wagon so probably went the last 100k without an oil change lol
Good way to test your rotary diehard fans Broomy.
Head gaskets have never had a problem in these
Your spark plug had stripped the thread out of the head, probably because the last person who changed the plugs couldnt be arsed lubing the threads. Had the same issue with my lpg Barra couldnt get three plugs out, broke one off in the head, ended up chucking on another spare head I had. All because of clowns working on cars. Good luck with the build Broomy.
wreckers down my way in perth has 7 or 8 of them for 500 each
Michael help me with my Barra build …
1.3mm mls head gasket
Headstuds
Valvespring
Heavy duty timing chain
Billet oil pump gears + backing plate
I run a bf gassy with Dominator parts with a fg turbo with the 0.70front housing with billet front impeller it makes a lousy 430kw 1073nm i run a C4 in my XY Barra
Party time
Oil pump gears apparently is a thing to change.
Yeah that is first on the list and forgot to mention them haha
Id say you're totally over thinking this. A bog stock NA+ t barra will make 280rwkw which is enough to make that thing fly. It doesn't need a full catalogue worth of motorsport parts
Id say he is looking for near double that figure.
I agree, the older shells dont need 500kw, this thing needs a real 2k barra at 300kw, one that has decent bolt ons and can be replaced with a junkyard engine when it gives up.
Gonna fill the firewall hole with a wheelbarra?
You didn’t mention the engine oil pump as that’s a must to replace. Definitely replace cams springs and valves. Replacing the pistons would be a good idea too. You need to lower that compression. Probably none of this you want to hear as it’s supposed to be a cheap build hahaha. But if you had to choose one out of all of what I’ve stated, it would be the oil pump. Look into it and you’ll find that’s what has destroyed many a Barra. Good luck with it :)
I don’t see 10.3:1 being a problem with a modern alloy head engine and intercooled turbo on 6-7psi with 98 fuel or e85 with 15psi.
@@BroomysGarage nah it’s fine for that. Your not chasing big numbers for it yet ;)
People shove 25+psi up the arse of unopned greentops. The compression isnt a problem (on e85)
@@MRMOPARMAN0426 I live on the west side, e85 isn’t around here sadly, but that’s good to know. Cheers
@@wallafied drum E85 is nearly the same price of pump E85 atm, and you can get it delivered to your house 😉
Seriously, E85 is gods nectar. Get on that shit!
How will the weight distribution be with this engine broomy?and will it be nose heavy? Also can't wait to see how thing's work out
No idea, don’t care 😂😂 will put it on the scales once the engine is mounted but 👍🏻
Wanna do the elite 2500 with universal harness on my turbo vn at some point, well worth the $ I reckon, beats the dodgy nvram chip mod I've already got, it'll probably be fine on my basic setup of a stock buick and China 3582 to begin with but I want to slap a g42 on it and a built motor lol then it'll need the 2500 definitely 👌🤣
Haltech should come to the party and help you out here, give Scotty a ring!
oh christ yes, imagine a episode on how to custom a barra into this along with loom and gearbox with the Haltech, i know id rush out for one
I don’t like contacting places directly asking for stuff or help. If places see it and want to be apart of it I’m more than happy to work with them. I’ll leave the Haltech campaigning to you guys to comment on their videos and get them over here haha
4 litre 2J?
You mean RB40... 😅
Don't use the stock oil pump
Barra in an RX4,No comment............
Put a rota in it
Don't forget a loom.. another $715rrp...
Haltech is definitely the way to go tho!
I’m planning on just getting a factory loom and pinning it to the Haltech plugs.
I know your on a budget but the haltech loom is unreal! All labelled and just got to cut lengths and terminate. With stock loom, the ecu might end up in engine bay...
Well worth the extra dosh now... imo
Won’t you need a Barra pro plug in for the zf control ? That way you could use a standard Petrol wiring loom ?
The elite 2500 or nexus will run the ZF as well these days.
Looking at the elite 2500 with harness too for my turbo vn, it's a trick bit of gear ,I think it's only 3100 for the lot minus the wideband 👌
"As some people call it, the Ford 4 litre 2J..."
No one with a brain calls it that. It's called the RB40. 😎👍

Turbos on wrong side for RB. Hehe
@@MrJermbob True, but the Barra block has all the same issues as an RB. Oil flow issues and oil pump gears that shatter once some power is in it, head gaskets that blow out easily, stock studs being weak as, the list goes on. The only redeeming quality is that the Barra head is like a JZ. 😎👍
Those bits in the baffle you found are from the PCV valve. They are a common failure point. Its probably backfired a few times in the past and shat the PCV.
Those cams look pretty shitty. But when they eat cams they dont generally do any damage. if you werent pulling the head i would have said worry about it when they chew up, but since your doing the head, you may aswell replace them.
Ive seen a couple drop valve heads. Its not a common problem, but its something to think about while the heads off. Xr6t valves shouldnt be too expensive id imagine?
Being a high km engine, its likely it will need a timing chain. Check the guides for wear while your at it.
Apart from that, you have it covered..valve springs, oil pump, head studs etc etc.
At that cost comparison, the haltech is a no brainer.
It's not even in the same world as the 2jz,
