  • After encountering challenges with bearing clearance and a worn out crank in part one - I’m ready to finish assembling the B5234T 2.3l 5 cylinder turbo engine for my 1980 Volvo 242 GT after it lost all engine oil a couple years ago.

Just stumbled on this video, what a project! Crazy to see an old 242 with some modern upgrades. I let mine go to a friend's kid at 240k back in 2004 when we upgraded to an S60. Guess I need to go back and watch them from the start... Can't wait to see what's next.

Thanks YT algorithm for bringing this content to me.
Great video, good explanations, great build.
Looking forward to the result. Subscribed (from Australia and fellow Volvo nerd)

The video is great even though I'm only 6 seconds... still my favorite build series so far. Keep up the good work.

So good. My two main take aways from this video are that I need a bigger ultrasonic cleaner, and I wish I was building a white block instead of a 16 valve.

It seriously made my day when I saw that the intake *perfectly* fit in the ultrasonic cleaner. Turns out that the big ones aren't that much more expensive than the small ones, so it's really just about how much space you want to give up for it.

@@Drive.Revive.Tinker Yeah, I noticed that when I was shopping for the smaller one I have, but like you said, I was concerned about space. But I'm getting dangerously close to breaking ground on the new shop, so maybe an upgrade is in my future.

Did you modify the pan and the pickup tube yourself? I really want to do this swap for my 240 but do not have the fabrication or skills for aluminum. nvrm paused the video prematurely. Great video cant wait to see more of the build.

Thank you! More coming soon. It’s a challenging swap to do without fabrication skills given how limited aftermarket support is. You can buy engine mounts now but there are lots of smaller items you need to figure out on your own (that’s almost the point of a swap like this versus something more common, though)

@@Drive.Revive.Tinker Totally agree, there is more information about the swap nowadays on the forums. I think a tad easier swap is the T6 since there will be some less fabrication work to be done. It won't sound as cool but, would prefer a Volvo engine swap than anything else.

Yeah, T6 definitely makes it a bit easier. There’s also a premade MaxxECU engine harness for the T6 that removes a rather complex step if you plan your build with that in mind

Have another look DRT can not weld alloy either , but he he does cut and prep the weld area well for a skilled welder to complete . He does 80% of the welding process . The more you try someting the more you learn ..... a failure is a learning step . You may not have a work space this well designed . But am guessing DRT started many years ago in a dark borrowed space years ago .
