      @@andremattssonthats a false misunderstanding. If the USA stoped oil and gas subsidies, the price of fuel would skyrocket. Thus making EV’s or at least Tesla’s at their current price without tax credits extremely competitive with their ICE counterparts.
      My $65k 22 Y w/FSD and no tax credit, replaced a $40k 2018 Subaru Outback. 5yr cost per mile driven per my accountant is: Outback was $0.49 and the Y $0.46 (estimated off owning it 5yr.) I drive about 25k miles per year. Note I charge 95% at home $0.08 kWh or $6 per 75kWh and that matters. If I supercharged it’s around $30 per fill up.
      I took delivery of my Y Nov 2021 and will never buy an ICE vehicle again. Waking up to a full charge heading to the office and not stopping to get gas saves me about 30 min a week but it’s also saves me $$$ because I no longer go into the store and buy crap I don’t need.

    I beg to differ. An EV does not need to bring whatever it is you consider “realistic range”. 150 miles of real reliable range is more than enough for a city car. Make it cheap and small. Own the segment, or establish it firmly as a segment. If one needs to drive further go hire a car. But for many people that’s a rare event.

They already spent the money on the material and calculate the profit margin for the whole vehicle when building it. Software locking range is not to "safe" consumers money, it's to milk consumers for more money for the stuff that they've already paid for. If they put a smaller batter in which result in lower range for a cheaper price, than yeah. But don't tell the consumer that you are saving them money by putting in a bigger battery, but in order for you to have access to the whole thing, you have to pay 1k+ extra just because

      You’re paying for the longer range, not a larger battery. And for “only” ~1500, that’s still a lesser sum than the longer range trim.
      If you don’t need the extended range on a regular basis, then don’t pay for it. And enjoy the (theoretical) freedom to charge to “100%” without the typical degradation since you are actually only charging to 80-90%.

    • @jasonbeasley3104
      @jasonbeasley3104 Місяць тому +31

      It's not that easy for two reasons.
      1. Elon also owns X and this administration is extremely hostile to the First Amendment. This admin has argued in front of the Supreme Court that government collusion with the social media companies to censor free speech is vital to democracy. It would seem the First Amendment (and the Second) exists precisely to thwart the efforts of administrations like this one and Elon appreciates that fact. In this specific case if he believes a second Trump term would be bad for Tesla he has likely concluded that a second Biden term would be bad for X and has decided free speech and X's role as the only censorship free social media platform is more important.
      2. According to their reports Testa is making money per vehicle sold while all other automakers are losing money on their EV lines. If both of those are correct then the end of EV subsidies is probably good for Tesla because it makes all EV more expensive which puts more pressure on Ford, et al than it does Tesla who has room to cut prices and still be profitable. the end of EV subsidies probably leads to some manufacturers exiting the market entirely and that would ultimately be good for Tesla.

    I am not sure about this but I think the EV incentive is intended to bring manufacturing to America by making cars that use American made batteries a better buy than the alternatives. Boosting EV sales is a secondary effect. Incentives to charging providers come with performance, useability, and reliability standards. The Biden administration has chosen to use carrots over the alternative of regulations. You are free to buy a car that does not qualify for the incentive at a price you would have paid anyway. Charging providers can build and operate their stations as they choose. They can collect a reward by complying with the standards, but they do not have to take the offer. It is human nature to feel punished when denied something but in the case of the incentives, the reality is you can choose to receive a reward or pass on it. We all agree to this arrangement at work. Your employer cannot make you do anything. He can only withhold the reward of pay, promotion, etc. You force yourself to do the work that earns the reward.
