- Sleep expert Matthew Walker breaks down the many effects of sleep deprivation on your brain and body.
Following is the transcript of the video:
Matthew Walker: My name is Matthew Walker, I am a professor of neuroscience and psychology at the University of California, Berkeley, and I am the author of the book "Why We Sleep."
We certainly know that a lack of sleep will actually prevent your brain from being able to initially make new memories, so it's almost as though without sleep the memory inbox of the brain shuts down and you can't commit new experiences to memory. So those new incoming informational emails are just bounced, and you end up feeling as though you're amnesiac. You can't essentially make and create those new memories.
We also know that a lack of sleep will lead to an increased development of a toxic protein in the brain that is called beta amyloid and that is associated with Alzheimer's disease because it is during deep sleep at night when a sewage system within the brain actually kicks in to high gear and it starts to wash away this toxic protein, beta amyloid. So if you're not getting enough sleep each and every night, more of that Alzheimer's-related protein will build up. The more protein that builds up, the greater your risk of going on to develop dementia in later life.
What are the effects of sleep deprivation on the body? Well, there are many different effects. Firstly, we know that sleep deprivation affects the reproductive system. We know that men who are sleeping just five to six hours a night have a level of testosterone which is that of someone ten years their senior. So a lack of sleep will age you by almost a decade in terms of that aspect of virility and wellness.
We also know that a lack of sleep impacts your immune system. So after just one night of four to five hours of sleep, there is a 70% reduction in critical anticancer-fighting immune cells called natural killer cells. And that's the reason that we know that short sleep duration predicts your risk for developing numerous forms of cancer. And that list currently includes cancer of the bowel, cancer of the prostate, as well as cancer of the breast. In fact, the link between a lack of sleep and cancer is now so strong that recently the World Health Organization decided to classify any form of nighttime shift work as a probable carcinogen. So in other words, jobs that may induce cancer because of a disruption of your sleep rate rhythms.
We also know that a lack of sleep impacts your cardiovascular system because it is during deep sleep at night that you receive this most wonderful form of effectively blood pressure medication. Your heart rate drops, your blood pressure goes down. If you're not getting sufficient sleep, you're not getting that reboot of the cardiovascular system, so your blood pressure rises. You have, if you're getting six hours of sleep or less, a 200% increased risk of having a fatal heart attack or stroke in your lifetime.
There is a global experiment that is performed on 1.6 billion people twice a year and it's called daylight saving time. And we know that in the spring, when we lose one hour of sleep, we see a subsequent 24% increase in heart attacks the following day.
Another question, perhaps, is what is the recycle rate of a human being? How long can we actually last without sleep before we start to see declines in your brain function or even impairments within your body? And the answer seems to be about 16 hours of wakefulness. Once you get past 16 hours of being awake, that's when we start to see mental deterioration and physiological deterioration in the body. We know that after you've been awake for 19 or 20 hours, your mental capacity is so impaired that you would be as deficient as someone who was legally drunk behind the wheel of a car. So if you were to ask me what is the recycle rate of a human being, it does seem to be about 16 hours and we need about eight hours of sleep to repair the damage of wakefulness. Wakefulness essentially is low-level brain damage.

@@notsobright7257 I'm done with school, got the best degree possible for my age and I'd say homework should be limited in most cases. I always did them at night, many times writing essays that my teachers didn't even notice. One of the worst feelings.
There are better things to do, things that make you happy and thus help to stay healthy, too. Especially if you feel like you already understood the stuff in class.
Rather discover who you truly are, what you like, what you want to do in your life, if that's realistic and if so, find out how you can reach that goal. And then chase it with your eyes wide open. Coming from someone who has failed to do so because of several reasons.
@@ensco7 couldn't agree more, i wish someone told me this 4 years ago
The part where you can't form new memories is so real. I've experienced that to extreme degrees. In school, I remember being perfectly able to grasp every piece of material we were taught, but without being able to remember it for extended periods of time. I would only be able to remember a few things, then the rest would go down the drain. It was exhausting. I needed to work way harder than necessary, but I was of course too exhausted to put in all the work needed to keep retaining all the information I kept forgetting.
This was also a huge problem when I started my first part-time job. Mind you, it was in a pharmacy, so there was a lot of information to take in. I would constantly be told how to do certain things and forget in the next second. It was terrible having to ask for help again and again. Then I told my boss about how I slept very little and she encouraged me to go to the doctor. I was actually sleeping so little that I was at the point where I would wake up feeling "normal" after 3-4 hours of sleep (not good). I was seriously mimicking ADHD symptoms, hell, even dementia. I was tired, demotivated, discouraged, clumsy, impulsive, unaware and absent-minded. But it was my normal and I didn't think about it. I was a child/teenager and my knowledge of the effects of sleep deprivation was highly limited, up until the age of 17-18 when I started reading about it.
How are you doing now? Going through this rn. i stay up late looking at too much youtube or social media 😔
@@lemonpoundcake22You just have to force yourself to put the phone down. If you have trouble sleeping, just close your eyes and you will eventually sleep even if you think you're not tired. When you close your eyes, you're telling your body that you're ready to sleep. Also, I recommend doing something tiring hours before bedtime so you can easily fall asleep, maybe do 100 jumping jacks, just do something to make you tired

yeah, my husband worked a 4 day workweek & that was the worst amount of sleep he EVER got. A 4 day work weeks is usually 10 hours a day, maybe you're not aware. and if you add in drive time...my husband worked a 4 day workweek split into 2 days on, 1 day off, 2 days on, 2 days off, 10 hours a day/afternoon shift & drove 45 minutes one way. He often ended up having to work overtime, so now put it at working 12 hours + 2 hours of drive time. NOT enough sleep, especially trying to go to sleep at 4 or 5am and having days in between where he would want to be on day shift hours. We can't get enough people to work regular hours right now, so I think its highly unlikely that we could get people that want to work 10+ hours a day. Now one anywhere is going to get rid of the 40 hour week, anytime soon.

I had sleep apnea which lead to sleep deprivation, and my brain, mood and heart were all getting affected due to this. Finally got a CPAP machine 9 months ago and holy cow, big difference. I’m so thankful for the Doctors I had that helped me get my CPAP
I have suffered lack of sleep from chronic pain issues over the years and finally developed fibromyalgia which stopped me sleeping almost completely until I was prescribed medication.
I find such difficulty falling asleep now even when really tired and it’s definitely had an effect on my mental capacity and physical health over 20 years and dreadful brain fog is an example of this.
Ability to remember things is now so bad, it does make sense why and also my mom hated sleep and spent hours reading in bed. She had a heart attack and developed dementia. I am currently staying up late to watch this video. Very knowledgeable, I shall forget this after I wake up and repeat the process.
I’ve slept 3 hours for about 3 years due to depression and anxiety. I lost a lot of weight and became a toxic person. I finally went to the doctor and with some medication, I can sleep 12 hours a night now and I’m seriously catching up on the zzz’s now. It’s amazing.
Happy to hear that you are getting better sleep now than before.
I suffered from depression for decades. I was suicidal. I was going through chronic sleep deprivation during the time.
Then my lungs went through a cleansing process (over five years).
My sleep dramatically improved. And depression totally disappeared.
With clean lungs, I breathe in so much that I feel like being outdoors a lot.
In my opinion, good clean lungs are critical in getting good sleep, and driving away depression.

the inability to make memories is detrimental for kids trying to learn in school early in the morning
Ryan Smith exactly why they need to push ack school...theres no reason a 7 year old needs to be up at 5:30 to catch a bus at 6:30 to be at a school at 7:00 ...
Here in our country school starts at 5:30-7:30am depends on the school. School ends 5:30-6:00pm. Commute going home mostly around 1-2hrs(most students) assignment and studies are a huge pain here as well. In the end of the day we have no personal time for ourself and families. And btw saturday usually has school activities from 1:00pm-5:00pm.
Sierra Fields Surely it's by design. Call me a conspiracy theorist, but I feel those in power don't desire an educated mass.
Ryan Smith i have a memory of when I was born and yet forgot rveryshit from high school lol
It has nothing to do with it being early in the morning, it has to do with lack of sleep
Very, very helpful, concise and true! Confirmed my fears. I've struggled with lack of sleep for decades due to PTSD and major depression. Now, at age 69, I only get 2-4 hrs if I'm lucky. I don't expect to live very long. In fact, I feel like I'm 85 instead of 69!!
About 33 years ago I went through some kind of mental health stuff that I now call GAD...general anxiety disorder. It hit seemingly so fast and hard one week. I went 3 days/nights without being able to fall asleep. It was hell. Dont even get me started about the doctors lack of help at that time. Ill never forget it. I didnt even know it was possible. Im much better these days!!!!!
So basically I will have Alzheimers, cancer, and a heart attack or stroke. *Fuck*

Man, thank you for the information. As a programmer, I don't even sleep. That's why I always forget things like where my phone is or where I put my phone. Goodnight, peps. Let's sleep at least 7 hours.
I have had a year with lack of sleep (avg around 5-6 hours) and I have actually noticed that I didn't create as many memories as I usually do. Very scary.

@nathanisaac7901 Last summer, I started experiencing after effects of Covid, I started having sleep problems. I noticed ideas weren't popping in my head like they use too. As well as not finding enjoyment from activities I usually do.
What's both sort of baffling and scary is that we know that sufficient lack of sleep can eventually kill you but we somehow have no idea why that happens.
I thought it was simply the fact that we run out of energy if we don’t replenish it.
what these studies fail to mention are how many studies were actually conducted and the scope of people used in these studies as well other factors such as their diet, routines, duration and so much more.

…yes we do? It’s because your immune system begins to get compromised from lack of sleep and you get secondary illnesses.
I have extremely severe central sleep apnea that went undiagnosed for over two years. I complained about being extremely tired all the time to my doctor several times but they blamed it on my medicine. When I say extreme, that’s really an understatement. I dosed off constantly, even on hard plastic chairs. Nothing I did helped. Finally my doctor agreed to do a sleep study. I was told I shouldn’t be alive, that’s how bad it was. I stopped breathing 150x per hour. That’s 5x more than what they consider severe. To make matters worse my file was misplaced when it was supposed to be expedited and it was another six months before they finally got back to me. I sure hope that it doesn’t effect me later in life. Watching this video scared me a bit. I’m getting better sleep today and my central sleep apnea is under control. Brain signals are struggling in other areas yet but not so much with sleep.
I have a lot of family history of heart problems too. Both my parents died from heart failure and had heart problems, my maternal grandpa died of a heart attack and my fraternal grandma had heart problems. I feel like I’m doomed after watching this and knowing what I’ve learned from doctors. I’m not even 40 yet.😢
This is going to make everybody that hates sleep LOVE sleep.

Watching this while I’m deprived of sleep...
I love that no sleep is considered a carcinogen, but we don’t change anything in our society.
Great advice from a british neurology teacher at the california college.
Why am i watching this at 2am
I'm doing the same thing.
It's your mum telling you to sleep already.
2am is too early, wait until 5am to go to sleep
Because you're a genius!

I quit my job because I was depressed and sleep-deprived. Now, I have my own business and I get 55+ hours of sleep a week. My life never been better.
Don Draper you go!!! That's very nice.
Praise the Lord Jesus Christ for that.
fallenSlave nope.... just praise this guys hard work and dedication. Smh creationists with their dumbass statements trying to take away success from people who worked hard for it.
Extra Gluten stfu dude, let him believe what he wants to believe.
Extra Gluten nothing like a sad pathetic atheist to bring joy to the comments section
THANK YOU HIGH SCHOOL I LOVE YOU SOOOOO MUCH!!!
Just8 Bits exactly!! Can't everybody see the education system is killing us?
There are people, e.g. just like me, that totally can't fit in this system, and it destroys us. I'm too sensitive for this
High school is literally the easiest thing you'll go through besides the drama
skoowy not if you are asian.but i do agree its the most fun period of life probably.Easy? 90% of asian that actually study in school probably have less than 5 hours of sleep a day considering the school starts at 6am
Thank you university, I love you so much!!! T___________T
Wonderful I work as night nurse
I'm doomed, no joke. I suffer from insomnia, stress, anxiety, depression, poor physical health, racing thoughts, et cetera. This video confirms what I've been thinking...that a lack of sleep will lead to an early death. A fatal heart attack or stroke could occur at any time, and I won't even know it until it's too late. I'm in my 40s, but I might as well be in my 80s or 90s at this point! Who knows how much damage has occurred in my body due to this extreme lack of sleep? I average between 2 and 4 hours of sleep each day!
Me who haven't had a normal sleep since Lockdown:🙃
Same bro.. 😳😳🥺
How does this guy look 40 and 19 at the same time?
No Namesleft, probably by smoking....it does wonders.😂
Lack of sleep
Cos he sleeps
It's gotta be the hair.
It’s that soft ass 14 yr haircut he’s rockin
very informative sir... thank you 👍
I remember when I lasted 48 hours without sleep because of depression and chronic anxiety , I was about to take my own life back then and couldn't manage to sleep well for such a extended period of time. I literally felt numb , dizzy , depressed , angry , suicidal and had murderous thoughts as well, I began hallucinating after 36 or so hours without sleep , pretty terrifying all these experiences, all of that combined with social isolation and social anxiety literally made me low-functioning and even getting up from a chair felt hard. No one was there to help me at the time, I didn't know how bad was that and it definitely took a toll on both my mental and physical health, fortunately now I'm much better and almost back to normal and I don't pull all nighters anymore.
How much time did it take?
I feel you
What made the changes happen?
Thank you for sharing your story man. I needed to hear this.
I'm glad you're doing better! ❤
