The falling leaves look so beautiful bet the yarn feels so soft once made up. I was trying my carder again yesterday will try making something like this today. You are so inspiring thank you love your work. sue
Lovely fall colors! I also have a Clemes and Clemes drum carder and had a good chuckle at your aptly named doffer. My carder is the smaller, hand-cranked version (which I got on sale since it had been a gift that someone returned!!). To lift off “Crolags,” I use a curling iron lever attached to a dowel: works like a charm and doesn’t create the S in the middle of the rolag. I first tried it with a straight out curling iron, then a curling iron with a longer barrel, but the wooden dowel gives it a tiny bit of resistance and helps fiber roll on nicely.
Yes! I have heard of the curling iron trick before, but my carder is too wide. I like the 1/8” metal rod and dowel. I pull the rod out as soon as I get enough around the dowel to capture the fiber then remove it. I don’t get the figure of 8 either. Drafts like a dream! Thank for watching! Spin Happy!😃

Hi Deb! I used the Clemes and Clemes Crankless Elite Double Wide Drumcarder. It is electric. Has 72 TPI and can comb fine fibers as well as regular fiber because the tines are sharpened. It is a great piece of equipment. Hand made and very versatile. I love it. My first DC was an Ashford hand crank and has TPI 72 but can not comb fine fiber, it will break it and cause neps, but it is a good entry level carder. Brother super carder is also very nice. Price points vary widely. The Clemes and Clemes run $2500-$4,000 US mine is the highest end. Brother carders are similarly priced. The Ashford was $750 a few years back. I had to wait 8 months to get my Clemes and Clemes. Brother Carders are readily available. Camaj Fiber Arts and Fairily Fiber Fun are licensed distributors for Brother. Strautch Mad Batter is also great carder, but I believe they are no longer making them, but you could probably find one used. It really depends on what you want to do with it. If you are going to use it daily/ weekly you may want an electric to save your shoulder. Happy hunting!
