Running toilet? Leaking toilet? Nobody likes a toilet that keeps running. We will show you the three most common causes and how to fix a running toilet so that you can avoid this expensive problem.
Most toilet problems can be solved if you know what to look for and a couple tricks for how to fix these basic issues. These easy solutions will help you to fix a toilet that is constantly running and costing you money on your water bill.
The three most common problems that cause toilet to run constantly are:
1. A leaky flapper - This is as easy as buying a new $6 flapper that fits your toilet brand and replacing in under 5 minutes.
2. Float problems - This could mean that the chain is getting stuck in between your flapper and the bottom of the tank or that the float is set too high. If the chain is getting stuck, simply trim it or clip the end to the clip that hold the chain to the flush lever. If the float is set too high you will know because the water will constantly flow into the overflow tube. Check out the video to see how to lower the float.
3. A broken or defective fill valve - If you still hear that annoying sound of water running you might want to pick up a new fill valve. This is a pretty easy DIY project and will save you tons by doing it yourself. Just remember to drain the tank first!
House in Progress aims to make home projects easy by showing you the steps involved, tools you will need and the difficulty to accomplish any home improvement or repair, including how to fix a running toilet.

Nice! Thanks for doing that!
No problem. I know if *_I_* would find it useful, then others would too.
(And I checked to see if it already existed first before I did this.) 👍
Thanks so much I’m a single woman and had to figure out how to stop my toilet from running. This video helped me!👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Me tooooooo!! UA-cam to the rescue!!
My 91yr old mother had this leak for 9mos at $60 additional on her water bill a month...I watched this video and replaced the flapper and fixed the water level as if I was a pro... I am so very grateful (and proud)😁
Whoa.. been listening to my toilet run for a week.. finally decided to try and fix it and this video solved the issue... thanks for saving me money...
You're a life saver! I just fixed my toilet just by watching your video. Thank you bunches!
Thanks so much for this video! I was ready to call in a plumber as I had this running toilet for a year. Good thing I checked UA-cam first & found your video. Fixed the issue in a minute!
It WORKED!!! Thanks so much for clear & accurate instructions
Thanks! I was taught that you just bend the arm on the ball float, which has worked in the past, but it wasn't working and I didn't want to break the corroded part. Turning that screw at the top did the trick!
I'm a older woman and I pride myself on knowing how to fix stuff around the house and if I can't fix it myself and I go to UA-cam this year has boggled my mind for some reason I had to watch six videos of the same thing I over and over till finally I viewed yours and you told me about the chain which I knew that's what it was but I couldn't figure out how it's supposed to go but now I know thank you so much young man you just made my day 😀🧓
Thank you, that fixed it for me and saved me lots of money. Just had to adjust the float and it worked like a charm!
You are god sent! I fixed the toilet problem I've had for days. Thank you so much
Thank you. Just a counter turn using a screw driver saved me from going to the hardware store and coming home and being frustrated.
Thanks man, you helped a mom who knows nothing about plumbing fix the leaking toilet
Hey thanks for the tip... I was about to replace inner toilet parts but saw this first... AWESOME! ... Works great after watching and fixing, thanks!!
Thanks so much. This has been an on-and-off problem with one of our toilets for years. I'd bent down the bar a little that holds the float ball, and replaced the flapper, and that sort of worked, but the problem was never completely gone. Lately it's been running constantly, and I found your video. I had no idea that screw lowered the float height - mine only has one screw, not two as in the video. I screwed it in farther, and it worked! The bowl doesn't fill quite as high as before, but I assume that's OK. So thanks.
And also, as another commenter said, thanks for getting right to the point. I can't stand it when I need to learn how to do something and the guy in the video fills the first five minutes with silly chatter and pointless introduction. Nice job. I've subscribed.
Thank you for all the kind words! Glad you found the video useful and that you were able to resolve the issue!
What about when your float is sticking when it is trying to come back up? I have the first style you showed in the video.
Thank you!!! Adjusted the screw and the float ball was fine. A 5 minute fix and $ saved! 🤗
Thanks for the video. All fixed...had been running for 3 days!! You're the best!
Dang it's doing it again!
Great video. Straight to the important info, clear and concise explanations. Thanks!
Great video. Your recording person did an excellent job!
This is the first times I've watched your videos. Great info. Thanks.
Thank you! For me the new-looking flapper was the culprit. I pushed down on it and the running stopped just like you stated. It wasn't a solid piece of rubber like the one shown in the video. It was a blue rubber gasket surrounding a white plastic center which had a dial in it for some kind of adjustability. Years ago, I installed it with the chain too tight which pulled the blue rubber gasket away from the plastic center/hub just a tiny bit so it wasn't laying flat anymore. I reinserted the gasket into the hub, loosened the chain and problem solved!
yeah man, thanks for the savings...your video was just what i needed!! Keep them coming!
I had the same problem with a Mansield#210. Thanks to you, I was able to find the cause and fixed it by replacing the flush valve seal. The ending blooper is really cracked me up!
I am so happy that I reviewed you video, because I was able to follow your instructions and resolve my float unit water level setting to approximately 1/2" from the top of the over flow tube. I got a call while at work from the water department stating they have noticed a unusual high amount of water usage at my home so may a pipe had broken, a toilet was malfunctioning, etc. I was worried that I was going to be greeted to a flooded basement especially if it was a problem that new toilet that I had just replaced 3 months ago because the old toilet keep had a constant running sound. I was told that I needed a new toilet which costed $235.00. Boy was I going to be mad if this new, and expensive toilet was defected or had gone bad in 3 months. Thanks for sharing your knowledge you save me that $125.00 to $130.00 plumber house call. I will check your online video in the future for simple solutions or repairs around the house before calling a service person, or plumber which is very costly at times. Thanks and God bless!
Awesome! Thanks for sharing Marty, glad you were able to get it all sorted!

Ello guys! Thank you so much for this video. For two reasons! Firstly, as a typical bird living on her own, I have no idea about how toilets work or how to fix them. But I have fixed my leaky toilet with the help of this video, so HUGE thanks! Secondly...from where I'm from, a flapper means something completely different! So, like a child, I was giggling along while watching!! So thank you...for fixing my loo AND making me smile! You can't beat a good double-entendre session!!
+Sarah Yates Hahaha, thanks for sharing Sarah!
House In Progress I need your help!! My loo is trickling again...and the configuration I have inside the loo, is nowt like anything I have seen on the net. And I can't find the loo's name anywhere. Could I somehow send you a video and you tell me what this thingy is...looks like the wrapper off crab sticks, do you have them in the US?! Cos the tricklin is doing my head in...plus my water bill has doubled! 😲😲😲😲 PLEASE help!!
+Sarah Yates Oh goodness! That sounds like quite the crisis! Send us some pictures or videos to houseinprogressdiy@gmail.com and we’ll see if we can help!
House In Progress Thank you SO much!! I've had a lot going on lately, so have only just seen your message! I will do a video in the next day or so, showing you the loo and the crab stick wrapper! and email it to you. Thank you SO SO much! 😊😊😊😊
Oh my gosh!!! Thank you so much.
Thank you for sharing!
That's it! You nailed it for me. This is really helpful. Thanks so much. :) And, I did fix it. *yay*
Nice job, thanks!
Easy to follow.😊
Thanks! Only vid that helped me.
I live in an apartment building. Routine Maintenance Requests are not being answered due to COVID. Only emergency situations are being addressed. My toilet started with the Phantom Flushing. I could hear the slightest water sound. The tank would fill but immediately start to drain again. Your video solved my problem. BTW I am a 73 year old woman who is pretty handy and hate having to contact maintenance to fix things. If I can do it myself I prefer to do so. THANK YOU for your video.
Thank you very much. I fixed my running toilet with your clear and expert.
+me me Sweet! Tell your friends ;)
Thanks for showing how to test the flapper thats the issue I have on my toilet. Time for a Depot run lol
Made me a real man today, thank a lot!
Nice video, thanks
Thank you!!!!
Thanks for showing the insides of different toilets, mine is definitely the one with the ball. I have learnt a lot.
Thank you!
Thanks so much I replaced the valve but was still running.. now it finally stopped
Got right to the point and helped me fix my leaking toilet. I give it a thumbs up.
+Scott Heavens That's what we do!
Thank you
Should the fill tube be in the overflow tube?
Did you replace the fill valve in the tank the tank with the float ball in it
I had calcium between flapper and drain opening, used scouring pad on drain opening and vwala no more running toilet.
Thank you so much!!!!
thanks so much! this helped solve my toilet trouble!
+Sabrina Alberghetti That's awesome! Glad to hear you solved it on your own and found this useful!
Thank you.
THANK YOU!!!!!!!! :)
Thank you for saving me lots of money. I really appreciate it.
You saved that money yourself with DIY! Nicely done!
Thank you for sharing. Problem is solved.
Thank you so much! The toilet was running every 5 minutes!
Now I heard water running in the tank too
Man thank you!
Thanks, Ben, I'm working on mine...we'll see-thanks for the 2nd tip-that might do it!! Save on a Plumbing Bill, hopefully! Nope, neither worked, so far, the water stops, then drains again...I turned the screw counterclockwise too; did not work:(i.e. works for a while then runs again-thought I had it:(
Thanks
I don't think my toilet has one of those float things. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you worked for me. Mine was the flapper.
thanks
I have no connector going from my float to my overflow tube. Is that normal? I have a Todo toilet.
