  • Alesis has a brand new flagship drumset, the Strike Pro SE. On paper it looks like it can keep up with drumsets three times it's price tag. But does it hold up in person, is it worth buying?

    I bought mine a little over a year ago and I pretty much love it. It does the job for sure! The rack is great. Sometimes I forget I’m playing on an e-kit, especially with the toms/mesh heads. You’re right, some of the sounds are great and some suck. I have many new skills thanks to this kit and being able to practice often while bothering almost no one. Dynamics are very solid. Creating kits is fun. So far, this thing is still a worthwhile purchase.

    Thanks Justin! I have watched many videos about this kit and have returned to your "it is what it is" approach. I am no longer a gigging drummer and am just looking for something with decent sounds along with "traditional" sizes for the drums themselves. I am happy to see the Alesis is on the right path to creating a competitive kit...my only task now is to physically give it a whirl. And this is coming from someone who has had only Roland kits in the past! I love Roland products, but there are other options!

    I bought this set about a month ago and absolutely love it! I know a lot about e-kits. I worked in the drum department at Guitar Center for 2 years (up until about a month ago). So I have been fortunate enough to spend a lot of time around a lot of different kits. Alesis generally makes good stuff for beginners, like their Nitro Mesh is great for beginners, but they don't make that great of kits for more advanced players, until this kit. The feel of the Strike Pro SE is extremely realistic, and you get a lot more "things" then just the basic setup. Yes Roland makes a lot higher quality kits, but their cheapest decent kit starts around $1,800 for the TD-17 KVX (do NOT get the TD-17 KV). Then now they have the TD-27, which is great, but it's $3,000. Plus you don't get as much. For players like me that like a lot of options on their kit, mainly more cymbals and drums, the Strike Pro SE is the way to go. I had one setup in my department for the past 4 months, and had zero problems with it, and that is with every single person in the world, including non players, jumping on it and beating the hell out of it. Now that I have my own at home, I am more than happy with it. I would highly recommend getting one if you want to get a high end kit without breaking the bank. Any questions please let me know.

      So what about the Roland VAD506 kit? Do u think it will outperform ur Strike Pro SE kit?

    • @IJustFiguredThisOut
      @IJustFiguredThisOut 4 роки тому +1

      @@rawradinosaur56 I'm a little confused. Are you debating whether to keep your Roland 20KV kit or to buy a Alesis Strike Pro SE? Cause I don't believe they make the 20KV anymore.
      When it comes to feel, I think the Alesis wins that category. Sitting behind the kit and playing it, it just feels like a real kit. The drum sizes, the cymbal sizes, everything they did with that kit makes you think you are playing a real kit. But Roland would likely win when it comes to durability. I've had people bring in Roland kits that were 15 years old. They are just built to last. And the nice thing about Roland kits is it is easy to get replacement parts or upgrade something. But the Strike Pro SE is pretty durable to. Granted it just came out not to long ago, so I couldn't give you an accurate read on how long they last, but it has held up pretty well so far from what I have seen. So it's really up to you as to what is more important. Other than the Strike Pro SE, what kits have you looked at?

    • @IJustFiguredThisOut
      @IJustFiguredThisOut 4 роки тому +1

      @@adams97 I've never been able to play one, or even see one, but from what I can tell I would say yeah. That VAD506 was made to be realistic. But it's a lot more expensive. I would say the only thing better about the Strike Pro SE is the additional tom and cymbal, but it looks like the Roland is just better in every other category. Although I guess if you wanted an easy kit to transport, that probably wouldn't be it.

    • @IJustFiguredThisOut
      @IJustFiguredThisOut 4 роки тому +3

      @@rawradinosaur56 Yeah I'm afraid I can't answer that one for you bud. Obviously the Roland one is going to be better, but you wouldn't be disappointed with the Alesis either way. If you have good credit, maybe you can take advantage of financing a lot of these store have to offer. For instance at Guitar Center, I got approved for about $3000, and had 48 months to pay it off.

    • @adams97
      @adams97 4 роки тому +3

      Thanks for the response, the Strike pro SE is like $2,500 the Roland VAD506 I got preordered for around $4,200 at 48 month financing no interest thru Sweetwater is $100 a month! For my dream kit that's worth it and one of my favorite things to do is play Rockband with these E-Kits using midi controller on my 360 and match the drums to the song, turn drum monitor on low and ur playing along with favorite songs. It's how I learned how to play. The object is to make E-Kits feel and sound like Acoustic drums. I want to be able to expand which VAD506 has 3 extra dual triggered plug ins which can be split. What made me choose Roland is the Cymbals are easily best on market with now 18" ride, 16" crash and 14" crash. And I already have 2 CY14's and 1 CY15 ride for extra cymbals. So I'll have to purchase stands for hi hat, and extra cymbals plus I could always order and extra 14" tom or convert one myself. And Btw I dont care for the tiny 8" high tom on Alesis. IMO doesn't look the best

    Love your channel, thanks for all the great knowledge you pass on. I'm a huge fan of the Strike kits. I generally hate E-Drums, acoustic is my choice. However I found myself in need of a quieter way of doing recording and tracking. After a great deal of research, I purchased a strike kit, the first run of the series. Yes, I've had a few issues, met with outstanding product support, and good results. So I am a happy Strike owner. The module is a huge reason I love this kit. The sounds to me are far better than Roland or Pearl, or whoever. I am able to have folks track in the studio, and in many cases no need to re-track with an actual acoustic kit at the end. Thanks again for putting so much effort into your channel, it really did help me in this E-Kit process I lived through. Being an old school drummer it was not an easy road to navigate..lol Here is a link to a sample of my Strike kit setup in action. ua-cam.com/video/BsBIZLoOqhI/v-deo.html Best Regards Bro

    I really like your videos! They will eventually help me get the drum set I need. I am considering buying this Alesis drum set as my first electronic drum set ever but I am still having doubts because of the latency. I read some reassuring words in the comments that latency isn't much of an issue if you never played electronic drums before but 10 milliseconds is a lot more than I am used to with my digital mixers. I hope I will find a store where I can play the set before buying it.

    Bought the previous strike pro, in february 2019 and the new SE, last week : HUDGE upgrade ! That new hihat-controller is SOOO MUCH better ! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻No adjustments necessary...plug‘n play...The 14“-hihat feels GREAT ! No need to change your habbits, concerning how hard you hit, or how you operate the pedal to open/close it, like it was with the previous one.
    The 20“-bass looks amazing and feels WAY better, too. It’s more stable, especially while playing double-bass-stuff. Besides the other improvements, that has been mentioned, in that review, the feature, that the two cymbal-holders are no longer attached to the two front-rack-poles, provides a better opportunity for an individual set-up. Well done, ALESIS !

So other than setting in for a song or two here and there with musician friends I've been out of the market for 46 years. I’ve had this kit for a year. I absolutely LOVED it, which is why I was disheartened when it started having lots of problems. So many missed triggers with double bass, difficulty choking cymbals, weird mis triggering, and sometimes the module would freeze and not let me cycle kits no matter what I did. I am disappointed, because this kit is so fun to play on and has so many great sounds and a ton of drums/cymbals, but I have no confidence in using it live, which is the eventual goal. I’m looking at trading up for the VAD306, KV27, or possibly the 506 if I never want to buy another drum set ever again.

Mine has the smaller kick which needs more weight to really hold it down but it's better than the one that came with the Roland kit. I have merged the two into one big set and run them into a mixer. I like the module and the way you can tune everything. As you mentioned you can always upgrade cymbals and the hihat as the module is pretty good. As a casual drummer it fits the bill for me.

    Hi Justin, Excellent video as always. You've been my trusted edrums advisor for since I took on drumming about 8 months ago, and even before as I watched a ton of your videos to choose what drum set to buy.
    I have a suggestion for a future video that, as far as I can see has not been covered thoroughly.
    The topic of drum racks vs individual stands for each tom, cymbal, etc.
    It seems like for some reason metal drummers gravitate towards the racks and the jazz drummers towards individual stands. Are there any practical considerations there beyond cable management and ability to customise?

    Justin, I really appreciate that you put so much effort into your videos and reviews. Thank you. As a drummer of 20+ years, I was emphatically opposed to electronic drums. I've only recently started playing an electronic kit. I do still use my PDP Birch, and Zildjian "A-Customs" for gigs. For now. Lol! Originally I had a set of Alesis DM6 (Rubber) given to me in lieu of payment for work. I liked what I heard. Considering it was a bottom end line Alesis. But I liked it well enough to purchase a Nitro get which I was told was mesh heads. It was not. Long story short Justin... I was able to trade those $300 worth of electronic drums for a mint condition set of crimson 2. That had only been played four times in a young man's bedroom. Knowing that these sell for nearly $1,200 new, I thought I got a pretty good deal. That being said there are a few issues. It seems to all be in the software. I like the mesh heads, even the black ones that are on it. Cymbals could also use some work. And actually I said all of that for the purpose of asking your opinion of the Crimson II kit. I value what you had to say. And have been subscribed for some time. Thanks again Justin.

    Best $2500 you'll spend on an Ekit..Strike module is pretty impressive, all those preset kits are nothing more than a way to sample sounds, so you can build your own kit and that's what this module is designed to do.. you build a kit around your playing style.

    I purchased this kit about 4 months ago. It has really lived up to my expectations for the cost. I have done quite a bit of tweaking to get a personal kit to what I like. I use this during rehearsal and live shows. One thing I did do was purchase a Command hi-hat pedal and got rid of the hi-hat stand. It plugged right in and I am getting much truer response on my open and close. I also had a higher end Gibraltar rack and moved the set to that rack. I now have more room on the rack and it is solid and stable. No big complaints so far. We will see how the set lasts as I continue to do live shows with it. i did spend the money on a good electronic drum case, so the drums and cymbals are packed safely and not just thrown on the trailer.

      @@davemurphyohio The kit has been working well. There are a few things that you can't do on the kit that an acoustic kit will allow, but that is ok. The sounds are good and can be tweaked. I have added some custom sounds on a couple of the rims of the rack toms. I wound up moving back to the Alesis rack because it is a bit lighter and I was able to get everything mounted just how I wanted. I use a drum amp on stage with the rack for better sound on stage.

    Bought the kit and so far so good. I've only had one other E kit which was one of the older crappy Roland ones but the SE is great. The only issues I've had was the kick kept missing some of the faster doubles but with some trigger tuning its working good. Took a little to get the hi hat where I wanted it to but that's to be expected. The only issue I had that was serious was I also got the Alesis amp 12 speaker and literally had to return 2 of the because they didn't work straight from the factory. I went through sweet water for everything and they are awesome so I got the new ones quickly but I couldn't believe it took 3 speakers to get one that worked. When I did get one that worked it kicks ass.

    The pas sizes are great, and should be standard issue on all edrums in that price range. The question is. All that money and you get that crappy thing? What is management thinking over there at Roland. I emailed Ralf over at Drum-Tec. He hated it. He much prefers the Diablo 18" or 20". There’s really something to the idea of not jumping on new Alesis products. I have a 20 year old Alesis QS8 keyboard that is still my primary gigging keyboard. I bought my DM-10 studio kit used and gigged with it for three years with no issues until I bought my Strike Pro kit for $1,500.00 a couple weeks after the Strike Pro SE kit came out. So far, so good. I spent about 1 hour tweaking the hi hat and it works great. To program a kit, I spent about 4 or 5 hours. Everyone who sees it and hears it has nothing but good things to say. I’m not an Alesis fan boy, but I can’t afford Roland. If you wait for the to get their sh- together, and have the time to tweak. I don’t see any issues.

    I bought an early Strike Pro and I pretty much agree with everything you mentioned here. First kit I played in the store was beyond broken. Couldn’t believe they still had it setup in the store. The second store I tried it in, it worked great and I bought it on the spot. Totally agree on sounds, 5% are fantastic, the rest are, meh-to-horrible. The 1.5 update is sounds only and I haven’t upgraded yet so I can’t comment. I like how they’ve iteratively fixed stuff over time and I would say I’d call myself an Alesia fan with the biggest reason being value for your money. It really is a great set for that price. Do the new heads feel like the ‘real feel’ drumtec ones? Or at least similar to them? If they don’t offer the hats and kick separately, I’ll be selling mine and getting this one.

    I agree with regards to the sounds in your vs TD 27 comparison. As I posted in another video. Upon being afflicted with Tinnitus I sold all my drum gear including DW acoustic set, TD 50 that I had switched the module to MIMIC. I have been "coping" with Tinnitus for over 5 years. I decided to repurchase an e kit in May play it for limited times. I scored a good deal on pre owned 17's. Few weeks ago I dropped by the music store and saw the Strike Pro SE. Played it seemed cool had sets that I would create out of the box. My buddy the manager let me return the 17's for what I purchased and a Les Paul guitar 🎸 I had purchased but lost interest and a few hundred bucks. I gotta tell ya, this is my favorite e kit by far. ( MIMIC fans please don't shoot me) I think besides the sounds is the different Tom sizes representing an actual kit. Triggers fine IMO.

    I purchased this kit soon after it came out. For the most part its been a great purchase. my only complaint is the rack and clamps. the bigger pads like the snare and 2nd floor tom were too heavy for the cheap plastic clamps on the cheap aluminum rack and would eventually start to slip. luckily I was able to set the kit up with stands like a real kit and sell the rack. I personally think that if you're paying this kind of money for something, there shouldn't be an issue with what holds it all together!

    So I literally just started playing drums (December 1, 2019) and my first kit was the Alesis Command X Mesh. I’m a complete novice, but I’m serious about learning and am absolutely falling in love with playing the drums.
    I’m planning on upgrading within the year if my progress warrants it and at first was thinking Alesis since that’s all I know and have been happy with my current kit (although I did add a Roland PDX-100 to the kit).
    I’ve watched a lot of your reviews and took away that you prefer Roland over Alesis. All that being said, with the release of the TD27KV, I’m seriously considering it over Alesis. But... I want something that looks good as well as being durable. What are your thoughts on the Strike SE vs the TD27KV?

    • @lukemidgley8581
      @lukemidgley8581 4 роки тому

      EJ’s Guitars generally really looks don’t matter. It’s about performance. You need a kit that registers every hit you make so if you’re playing fast it picks everything up or it’s just horrible. It wants to be responsive so you can play dynamically - meaning it plays the softer hits more quietly. This seems like a solid bit of gear for the price. I’ve been playing nearly 20years and I’m considering this.

    This looks cool, but it's sadly out of my budget. I combined an Alesis Surge mesh kit with a Roland td6 kit and cherry picked the best samples from each brain. I'm pretty happy with the sounds. I used a 'y' cable on the snare to combine a solid snare crack from the Surge brain, and mixed it with an over ring sample on the Roland, so the sound of the snare is really dynamic and changes very dramatically from the different velocities. I'm a terrible drummist, so I don't really need anything better, and for the $475 total price tag I spent for both ekits, I'm quite satisfied. Now I just have to learn now not to suck. :)
