Chris even gets the chair pose right. Greeeeeat pauses.
Anyways, Chris Pine.
Shae M oh chris pine you say? I was going to assume Chris Hemsworth but Im glad to specified.
Lamont Simpson Hemsworth played his dad.
Chris Pine got the chair pose right. You would think so.
He plays him in the new movies..
Unpopular opinion, Chris Pine is currently the best actor of all the Hollywood’s Chrises
Pine has clearly watched a good amount of the original series. His impression of Shatner's Kirk is excellent. Not overdone, but solid. Also...#NowThatsAStarTrek
Cara Macedo but he didn't play Shatner Kirk...
ehhh... a little overdone but not burned
joelm33 I think it was supposed to be overdone
He's better in here than in the newer movies. I think they ruin his character.
He’s a great actor most great actors can impersonate naturally
I like how Pine’s playing Shatner’s Kirk instead of his own
And not doing a bad job of it. Now Shatner needs to take his version off. 🙂
Love It, funny as hell!
Thats exactly the joke isn’t it
That’s because they’re parodying the original series
@@jason854656 yes I see this
The guy playing Sulu has been Sulu on SNL at least 3 times. Once in the 70s with the original cast, the mid 80s cast with Shatner, and this one. He's a set designer for the show or NBC, I believe.
Also on the episode with sir Patrick Stewart, the sketch "The Love Boat: the Next Generation"
that line from him was my fave in the sketch
Love it!
Such a great touch!
He's the longest serving SNL employee, that's Akira. Been there since day 1. Great interview with him on yt
“You have a...BROTHER!”
He went full shatner there even the dramatic pause lol
It's even better that this is basically canon
😂😂😂💯
Chris Pine’s impression of Shatner was terrifyingly good
I like the star trek restaurant
Chris Pine's impression of Chris Pine is terrifyingly good
You've never actually seen William Shatner in anything have you?
@@chrishouston3566 yup, star trek, the idea of the joke is that Chris Pine was acting like Shattner in the new movies thereby acting like himself in the SNL parody overexaggerated. Glad you get jokes
He did a great Bill Shatner without sounding too much like a parody.
Now I am anxious for another Trek movie starring Pine and company.
Just get a real science fiction writer.
I love the person playing Sulu is the same guy that has been playing Sulu since SNL started.
YEEESS!! Thank you for pointing that out. He was in the Belushi sketch as well as the one from 1986! I assume he must be one of the SNL stage crew.
@@jdryyz his name is Akira yoshimura and has been snls production designer since day one. He played a "new featured played" during the seasons finale this year's opening monologue. He's great.
@@johnmarr2695 He actually started as a design assistant in the art department, took him five years to work up to production designer...
I love how he looks embarrassed to be up there 😁
Yes Akira Yoshimura
Chris Pine does a pretty good Shatner
Yeah, he's been doing Shatner for three trek films now so he ought to have it down.
and yet he doesn't
Thomas Kirby He doesn't do a Shatner impression when he plays Kirk in the movies. It was an active decision that only Karl Urban would do an impression because his was so spot on.
Is there a video of this impression?
Karl Urban was definitely spot on!!!
2:24. Checkov: “Captain, I’m not sure I trust this man to repair our ship,”
Sulu (VERY Senior aged): “Yeah, we’ve never seen him before, . . . it’s Wierd!”
😂
That moment was so funny. 😂 I'm convinced that I could watch this a hundred times and still laugh at it. Also the slow burn laugh from the audience in response to it was great.
*Weird
I take it the funny part is Sulu has never seen any of them before as he's the only one that's been in all the Star Trek skits.
Pine trying not to laugh lol
Chris Pine trying so hard not to laugh. Kudos for keeping a straight face.
He and all of them probably laughed so much in the behind of the scenes lol.
@@objectdefiance4027 most definitely!!! 🤣
The way he should have played Kirk in the movie
Holy smokes Chris Pine's Shatner-Kirk was on POINT!
unlike the movies
@@bheast86 Because he wasn't impersonating Shatner. He was doing his own version and quite frankly, he killed it
Chris Pine does a fantastic impression of William Shatner. He nailed it! He even sounds like him. Chris didn't over exaggerate the performance which so many have through the years. Shatner was always made fun of for his classical pauses, but for me, he definitely made the show worth watching. May they both live long and prosper.
I think Kate Mulgrew did a great job channeling Kirk in her performance as Janeway on Voyager as well. Not the over-the-top campy impression we see too often, as you've mentioned.
In the bloopers for Beyond, its called going "Full Shat(ner)"
Saw Shatner live on stage once at a convention, he really does talk like that in person.
No way does Pine pull off Shatner....

Love how Pine almost loses it to Akira Yoshimura's line delivery Sulu. It's a great line, and a great line delivery. I think one or two others mentions it below, but Yoshimura works behind the scenes on the show and has happened to play Sulu in most of the handful of SNL Trek sketches.
I just noticed Akira too. He was in the old sketch where the Enterprise had converted to a restaurant! I had no idea who he was. Now I know!
Seeing him in this video after seeing him in the restaurant enterprise was just..
So amazing
He was in the first one with Belushi, right?
Not only Pine, the full crew almost breaks with that line, it's so brillant!! Thank you so much for aporting the name, then i could discover, (or re-discover him) that he has been in the SNL staff from the very first start, all seasons, he played Sulu already in 1976 !!
Wow, Chris Pine was spot on even doing the dance in a very 60s way. Great fun & hilarious!
The Japanese guy played Sulu way back in the original season of SNL when Belushi played Kirk and Chevy Chase was Spock.
He also played him again for the Restaurant Enterprise skit with Shatner, Phil Hartman as Bones, Kevin Nealon as Spock, and Dana Carvey as Khan. Carvey's exaggerated take on Montalban was hilarious and still is.
@@alucard624 agreed. funny stuff. the hockey glove, I can't
Yes we know... he's also in The Mandalorian!!!
Chris Pine's William Shatner impression!! ^.^
And one of the painted screens in the back has the words LCARS on it which is the name of the operating system in the Trek universe.
rachel andrews It was pretty good.
I would have enjoyed the JJ Abrams trek Movies 10X more if they let Pine play Kirk this way lol
Piggy-and
The movies would have been a lot better if you gave the cast at least one season doing trek on TV.
Good to see that they've had the same Sulu for over 40 years.
His name is Akira Yoshimura. He's a stangehand for SNL. Now I'm wondering if they ever do a classic Star Trek sketch, will they still keep him or will Bowen Yang take his place? I like to think they'll replace him with Bowen.
It turns out the Federation has a crappy retirement system.
@@canaisyoung3601 Nah! As far as Lorne Michaels is concerned, Leo IS Sulu. Unless they have George Takei as a guest sometime, of course, in which case, Leo will play the Kelvin Sulu.
oh please oh please SNL put Takei and Yoshimura in a sketch together! while they're both still around!
should have been done for the 50th. it'd be good for all the parallel-timeline crap..

Cool fact, Akira Yoshimura has played Sulu in every SNL Star Trek skit since they started in the '70s. He's hilarious as Sulu and it's pretty cool watching him grow older with his character over the years!
Sulu was the best part of this sketch.

This actor appeared in the original one with the first cast with Belushi as Kirk. I promise.

Oh hey the guy playing Sulu is the same
Do people realize that the guy playing Sulu here has played Mr. Sulu in past SNL Star Trek skits -- including the Wrath of Khan parody from 30 years ago!
Did you know he was actually the guy who played Khan in ST2? Now that's "Redemption"!
Christopher Thorkon Thanks. 2 things. Love factoids. Love given credit where due. Also that actor is a company man 30 years in.
Yes, I knew. Been seeing him off and on for decades.
@@pennyandrews3237 I figured, which is why I did not use the word "actor" -- I am assuming he just works in some office somewhere for NBC .
Actually it was 40 years ago.
Kirk should have had his shirt off by the 3rd bit, and a dead security member on the floor. You'd think these people never saw Star Trek.

If Chris Pine played Kirk like this in his movies, we’d have three more Star Trek movies by now
I agree.
Haha 😂
Now that's a star trek
Wow, Chris Pine does a great impersonation of William Shatner.
Christopher Thorkon Chris Pine did a better Shatner on SNL than he ever did on JJ Abrams' sucky Trek films. Shatner still rules the Trek universe. He's even a better starship captain than his next generation copy cat Jean Luc Cueball. Is this extreme? Yes! That's how we are! We are purists! We stay true to the original! All else is just sci-fi TV with the Star Trek label plastered on it.
In Abrams' defence, his movies were an alternate universe. This is shown through Leonard Nimoy's appearance in this movie as the Spock from the Prime Universe.
No Wonder why he was cast as Kirk
@@timrob12 the abrams movies still sucked

Was that actor who played Sulu the same one who played him when William Shatner hosted thirty years ago and they did that rotating restaurant Enterprise sketch? If memory serves: "Sulu, what's happened to you?" "We're all getting older, Captain."
CookieDTotR I think it is. I think he did Sulu in 76 as well with Belushi as Kirk.
Yes, he's been on the show for about 40 years. He always plays Sulu whenever they do a Star Trek spoof.
I do get the impression that he's been Sulu before.
That is beyond funny.
525lines, I think you and +Jon Groubert are right, and I think +Timmy Vo has an especially impressive memory of that Belushi/Kirk sketch. :-)
This is kind of extra funny in light of Star Trek: Discovery's previously-unseen-adopted-sister-of-Spock
The date on this video is May 2017, the release date for the first STD episode was September 2017. I wonder if some writer nerd heard the plan about Spock's previously unknown adopted black human sister and did the same bad idea playout for the TOS timeline as sleeper inside joke. Or it was just an example of serendipity playing out in real life, which I consider more unlikely.
Yes. I was like "Nooo, you have a sister. Did you go crazy again, Spock?"
I mean
Sybok tho
"Now that's a Star Trek!"
@@edwardwood6532 I enjoy Discovery despite its flaws, but the adopted sister angle baffles me a little. I mean, I'm all for creative thinking outside the box, but why insert something that raises questions about show that already has a very complicated continuity? I mean, would have been so difficult to simply make her Spock's childhood friend, or an adopted cousin he was close to?
Chris Pine does a more accurate impression of Kirk on SNL than he did in the movies.
Pine's impression of The Shat is so on point.🤣🤣🤣
Ok, Pine-as-Shatner-Kirk is actually kinda entertaining.

I need more Kenan as Neil deGrasse Tyson
He needs a deeper voice.
Kenan just brings that sparkle eye joy to just about any character he plays. Lol
Why? HIs impression sucked.
It was a terrible impression. They just dressed him as Neil deGrasse Tyson. Nothing else was even remotely a nod to him, except, yenno... vague references to his interest in science fiction movies. I think Kenan's better than this. He should work on developing an actual impression of this man, before he does it on air. Neil deGrasse Tyson could be a funny character, too. All he basically did was act like a vague poindexter character and say his name was Neil deGrasse Tyson. It wasn't even a good poindexter...
Funny Muffler I don't think it was a very good impression, nothing against Keenan. He's not very good at impressions in general.
Another Sulu cameo from Akira Yoshimura?

Chris Pine does a good kirk here. Also, if an episode like Spock's Brain can be aloud to exist, then I would absolutely watch an episode centered around Spocko!!! "Brain and brain! What is brain!"
"Allowed", not "aloud". The first one is essentially "permitted" and the second one is when you're not whispering, you're speaking "aloud" (out loud).

At least they were trying to make a Trek product following in the formula, and had the courtesy to let us know it was an alternate timeline. This new batch of shows like Discovery and Picard are a huge mess and a complete waste of time and money.

Is the guy playing Sulu the guy who played Sulu in every _SNL_ _Star Trek_ sketch since the late 1970s? Never mind, I found the answer in two seconds. It _is_ the same guy! Akira Yoshimura, _SNL_ production designer. That is cool. When I saw this years ago, I thought it was just a funny line because he is clearly not a cast member. Not until watching the vintage _SNL_ _Star Trek_ sketches did I recognize him. It works either way, really, though knowing who he is probably makes it funnier.
