  • Mike Myers sits down to watch his own movies on VHS. Throwback, we know. Watch as he revisits scenes from Wayne's World, Austin Powers, Shrek and The Pentaverate, and gives his perspective on what it was like to work with Beyoncé, the fight for the rights to Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody, and Shrek's Scottish accent.
The Pentaverate is currently streaming on Netflix
    00:00 "Beyoncé was a dream"
    00:41 Wayne's World
    03:05 Austin Powers
    07:04 Shrek
    09:07 The Pentaverate

The fact that he was more than happy to rerecord the entire shrek movie in a Scottish accent just because he thought it was better and convinced them to do it, is why we have the greatness of Shrek now. Thank you good sir.

I had high respect already for Mike Myers, but hearing that he rerecord for Shrek boosted that respect even higher. His humbleness of giving credit to the talent working with him and helping him attain the highest caliber of quality, even in sillier movies like Austin Powers (which I still enjoy rewatching)

Mike Myers is so generous towards the other talent. Most actors seem to play dumb, when it comes to giving credit where it's due. That gives you an idea of how collaborative of a spirit he has! I was hoping he would talk about his Ray Foster character in Bohemian Rhapsody, because the other actors have spoken about how deadly serious Myers was about getting it just right; that he takes the art of comedy/acting/production very seriously. He was uber-prepared with all kinds of concepts and things to try. I'm somewhat paraphrasing here, but the other actors said that it was like watching a masterclass.

I was in the theater, watching Wayne's World (when it first came out), and the Bohemian Rhapsody scene came up.
I immediately started "rocking out", just like the characters did on the screen.
A girl sitting near me was shocked as if to say "How did you know they were going to do that?"
    I didn't.
It's just a thing we do, when that song plays.
    Party on, Wayne!

That scene was reenacted by an entire generation on repeat. We added Bohemian Rhapsody to the tape we listened to on the carpool to school in our friends Mini, specifically to do this. Wayne's World quotes also became part of our vocabulary for daily life, complete with American accents.

Yeah that was a movie that didn't do particularly well, but my family had a love for it. We watched it frequently when it was on, and quoted it all the time. It's actually a very clever and well-done movie, but I think people just didn't know what to think of it.

Admittedly it probably wasn't the BEST parenting decision, but watching Austin Powers: Goldmember with my mom and dad at the age of 7 is one of the few happy memories I have with both of them. My dad died when I was 20 and I'll always remember his sense of humor: exceedingly dry and exceedingly English.
