It still amazes me the lengths that people will go to try and scam someone. Thank you for the story time and glad ya’ll made it back to Texas. Been watching you for a long time. Your my favorite!
You know what the story made me think of - Back in the day - if you worked Retail you knew about the Quick Change Artist who would give you money for the sake then want some back & they would give you another amount & then you got all confused & they walked out with too much money for their change back! So this sounds like a digital version.
I've had requests like that on Marketplace. Now I put on my post "Cash Only and anyone asking to pay any other way will be blocked and reported". I am with Chase too and they are very good about spotting scams, thank goodness. Sorry you had to go through this when you were in the middle of packing, working, back and forth to Dallas, etc. People are cruel. Thank you for putting this out there and may save others from being scammed.
Thankfully your bank caught it. When we're mentally exhausted, we aren't thinking straight. I don't know how these people sleep at night. Hugs to you Marie.
That's why I don't even do marketplace. I decluttered my whole house more than once and gave it all away. I didn't want people coming over here. It's sad the world we live in!
Yes it's truly sad!! I can't trust any one! We even got scammed on our cell phone from BodA!! Acting like it was the bank but got us scammed through zelle it sounded sooo Legit they called from the same # on the back of your debit card!!
It's to the point, I'm more comfortable giving out my address rather than phone number cuz that all are looking for that these days. Too many people with too much time on their hands. FB marketplace is too much hassle these days.
So sorry this happened to you Marie. You’re an honest person and that’s why they were able to confuse and threaten you. Thanks for sharing because you probably helped others. Take care 💕💕💕💕
Unfortunately it's not out of desperation, it's their way of life. They tried pulling a scam on my 91 year old mom until I stepped in, they did the same with threats of FBI, local police etc.... Glad everything came out OK for you.
Sorry this happened. You certainly didn't need to be dealing with that while you were trying to pack and get moved. Glad that you're back where you want to be!😊
We live in a VERY SICK society now a days with so many really bad people when it comes to the internet these days Marie. You were tired and fell for what a lot of us have fell for at one time or another. Your good and that's what counts. Yea for you ! Maureen
I work for a Credit Union and we use Zelle. There is a threshold for the amount being sent out daily and monthly. Your bank’s algorithm showed that you’re not a regular Zelle user and that’s why you had to call and confirm the transaction. Take solace that this transaction was flagged. Glad it was caught.
The company I work for requires us to take Security Awareness training constantly to identify potential scams like this, to prevent things like this from happening on an even larger scale. These people spoof emails and come at you with a sense of urgency, push, push, push, threaten you, make you feel guilty, expecting quick action..all to make you feel pressured and not pay attention to the details. There is no question in my mind this was all to get $250 from you, and while they were working you for it, they were probably working 27 other people at the same time. it is a very lucrative scam for these people. I'm so sorry this happened to you. I honestly think the only reason you didn't catch it was a scam at the beginning is because you wanted to get home so bad and were so exhausted from the packing , etc. They just happened to catch you at a vulnerable time. 💛💛💛
If this was on facebook I would have blocked them before any of this went that far. The minute they asked for money I would have blocked them. It would have saved the stress and time for this whole thing.
There is also a Google code scam with marketplace. They ask you to send them your Google code. Never do that! They take it and use your Google account pretending to be you. If anyone ever asks for codes or money they are scamming. Be careful everyone
I'm so sorry this happened to you, Marie. This just happened to me a few days ago while I was trying to sell a table and chairs on FB marketplace, too. It took me a few minutes of going back and forth with these people, but then I caught on and blocked them immediately. As that conversation was going on, I had another person wanting to buy it and giving me the same line, I blocked immediately. I think all I've dealt with are scammers these last few days. I changed to cash only on the description, and those inquiries stopped.
I was scammed for $600! Trying to buy a Ragdoll kitten! I should have known better! But by the time I realized they were bogus- they were gone!! I felt so bad! I cried! I apologized to my kids, my husband. PayPal told me it happens all the time. So it happens. We get scammed because we don’t have a crook’s mindset! Grrrrr!! Loved your story and so sorry! But you’re not alone! Can’t wait to see your new place and how you decorate it. We just finished a new build. A log home. I had wanted one for a long time. We had our old house demoed and built our log home an the old foundation. Love it!
Ugh. I would do cash only. If they have the money they can get it from the bank and hand it to you. I hate this world. I know everything will work out for you. Stay smart, stay 💪 strong
Don’t feel bad for them!!! This is their profession. They are professional scammers 🤬🤬🤬🤬this is their whole business. So don’t feel bad one second. You were just smart enough in the end to see for what it was.
Years ago I got caught up in a scam sort of like this too !! Too confusing to explain... but it was a nightmare at the time. They confuse you to the point where you get overwhelmed. It happens to the best of us.... it's disgusting that there are people out there like this.
So sorry that that you had to deal with this. Another red flag to look for is text communication from the scammer is written with poor grammar (broken English). I noticed this on the screenshot of the text that you posted. Sadly, many people succumb to the threats and intimidation and actually send the money to the scammer.
I understand people saying cash only and they pick up, but I also see how that can be a bit intimidating for Marie. Im a single woman. If 2 guys come to puck up a heavy item, they can hand me $500, hit me over the head, take the item, take the money back and leave me for dead. Its a scary world out there. It makes me angry! 😠 I sell a lot, but mainly on local sites where names would be seen, and I always have another person here when pick up occurs!!!! That and I have a "little friend". 😉 In my opinion Marketplace, Craigslist are too big. Local Facebook sales groups may be better. Of course hindsight is ALWAYS 20/20!!! Stay safe out there!!!
My best friend actually went through this same exact scam in March I think it was and she fell for it too. She contacted her bank and told them about it. Also, My friend contacted Zelle and asked them about everything and they said they didn't send her any emails. A good rule to go by is if an email from a credit card company or anything like that doesn't say your actual name (for example: if the email says "dear customer..."), then it's a scam.
people are dumb people who go online and do all sort of things are leaving digital footprints and should be afraid. Thank GOD that he was watching over you and they didn't get anything from you. SORRY A%% PEOPLE. Thank you for sharing.
Marie, I know exactly how you feel. I consider myself an intelligent person and above scamming. I found out I am not. It is so easy to fall into. My deal was regarding a subscription and when I put in the amount that I supposedly owed for the subscription they changed it to $3,000 instead of $300. Of course I never had any such subscription which is why I called them because I didn't want them to charge me that. Like you, I didn't want to do anything wrong. When I check the money was in my account. In the end I called the bank and found out that they had transferred money from my credit card into my account. If I had bought the cards and sent them they would have had my 25 or 2700. Thankfully I wised up. But it is so easy to be taken even when you are savvy to scams. I understand completely!
“They probably didn’t live in the area..” They more then likely don’t even live in the US. I used to work for a financial call center. I seen this a lot. I will never use Zelle or Cash App. They are both untraceable and once you send the money.. it’s gone.
This is a very timely message to others - thank you for going into detail about what transpired. Sooooo many are scammed and I hope this will alert us all to use extra caution when doing financial transactions with those we don't know and could be the target for potential theft. Sooooooo thankful you didn't get taken advantage of Marie! Hugs from Texas 💜
Thank you for sharing this and do not for one second be embarrassed. First of all, it is easy to get caught up if you don’t know the app. I wouldn’t know, which is why I’m thankful you are sharing your experience. And you were so incredibly drained packing and prepping for your move.
This exact same thing happened to me except it was for a remote job and they overnighted me a check and I was to cash it and get stuff for my “home office “ and yeah my bank said uhh no this is a scam! They threatened me with FBI and the whole religious thing came about. Absolutely 💯 ridiculous that ppl actually do this for a living!!! WHY!!?? Glad you didn’t fall into that trap and you came out on top!!
I've had that happen too. And you are correct it is just on the expensive items. Mine was always they were sending a male family member to pick it up too. I had 3 in one day. Just stay vigilant. Fyi...Zelle doesn't require that. I actual put in my listing cash only.
Omg, I’m so sorry that happened to you. Scammers are everywhere these days, it’s so unfortunate. I’m glad your bank caught it right away, whew! Thx for sharing with us! Xoxo ❤
Scamming is a billion dollar business. I really believe it should be required as part of the school curriculum to have a course that is dedicated to internet scams. I have heard your story so many times Marie. Don’t be embarrassed.
Thank God your bank caught it. I would never send anyone money if they owed me. There are so many scammers when u try to sell stuff. That's why I sell local only. Omg it so sucks!! Oh yes it definitely was a scam. They were from Africa I bet. Or near there.
I am reaching out to say thank you for the heads up about this whole situation on Facebook marketplace. Because of your video, I became more aware of what could happen. Last night I placed my very first posting to sell a bedroom set. Unfortunately, I was also confronted about this whole scam situation and paying money. Red flags went up and I remembered everything that you spoke about which then helped me to not fall for the scam. Thank you again from a girl in Texas.
It's so sad that there is so many scammers out there. They are watching all Marketplace, Craigs List, etc seller posts and trying to get as much money from people as possible. Glad they didn't get your money. Thanks for sharing with us. We all need to be aware.
Thank you for sharing this story. About a year ago I had a similar experience and also thought I was pretty good at spotting a scam. I had gotten an email form what appeared as PayPal. Was scammers. Always call the company to confirm!
Sorry you went through all of that. I would say you missed the signs since you were stressed, tired and dealing with everything from the move. Thank you for putting this out there for others.
This exact thing happened to me this week! They paid me for a wedding dress with Zelle and I got the email and then the thing came up only mine was $350. They said do you trust me I’ll deposit that if you send it right back to me. And at that point, I just said I would rather just deal with cash Thank you and then they disappeared and they also deleted their Facebook profile so the whole thing was a scam even who they were was made up after that I called my bank and reported it and they said that there was never a transaction for the wedding dress which was only $175 so I guess that’s the new scam going around! Blocking them doesn’t matter because they disappeared
Sorry you went through that on the FB scam! I work for a local PD so I have heard/seen them all. I don't trust anyone anymore..lol I have even called out a guy in a Taco Bell for playing the old "wife was in a wreck and I need money for gas to get to the hospital" scam. I wont do that again but it is ridiculous the lengths some people go to to avoid making a legitimate living! Good catch from your bank. I had my dad's life insurance proceeds check that was stolen from the Atlanta post office (the scammers stole three other peoples checks from there too) before it made out to my suburban address and was forged and cashed by persons unknown. I would never have known (I wasn't expecting the check yet) had Bank Of America not called me from their fraud department (not my bank-it never made it that far) but at least the banks are watching for some of these bad guys. Other than this instance, did you have pretty good luck with FB marketplace? I have a ton of stuff to sell from my parents house and figured that may be the best way to go rather than estate sales or yard sales.
So sorry Marie! When my grandma still lived at home she got called and told she'd won from some giveaway she entered but she had to send them $800 for "processing" and then she'd get like a million dollars. She went to get a money order and the person had to explain it was a scam 😭 people are so awful!
It happened to me, just like you. Different scenario but the same crap. My bank saved me. I felt like an idiot. Sitting here arguing with these scammers and it’s just not clicking in my brain yet. So I totally get it. My bank wouldn’t even listen to me!! I thought nothing could get past me. I never use Zelle, even though it’s an option at my bank, I will never use it. But thank you for your story. People need to know. Glad you’re happy and back home. Love ❤️ your videos. Been watching for years. Looking forward to the next video.
You know it’s funny, I was driving to my daughters house and they had a big city light up sign on the side of the road telling people to be careful because there are Zelle scams going on
I removed & canceled all apps from my phone, as well as deleting all my banking info. I also contacted my bank. So many are getting scammed & hacked I said no more. If i sell anything you have to have cash, no checks... period . It's a crazy world... So sorry this happened to you..
I'm polder and half blind in one and couldn't understand what they wanted me to do for winning a giveaway. Or I would have lost money. Thank goodness my daughter didn't have time to help me. Thank you so much for sharing this with us. Just one of the reasons we love you!!!!!
So many scammers out there. Cash only, no large bills, and they have to pu. Or, meet them in the parking lot of the local police station. I NEVER use venmo, zelle, PayPal, or whatever else is out there. Those transactions can be reversed, they protect the buyer.
I’ve been scammed a few times, yeah I know! Ive learned that whenever someone says you have to send money to get money it’s a scam believe me that one cost me A LOT! But then another time on instagram through PayPal which I will never use again! They wouldn’t stand behind the transaction! It’s amazing how these people can get away with such criminal acts!
Those of us who have been there understand. It happened to my husband. It was a Craigs List ad for a truck cap that he wanted $500 for. This guy texted him, said he wanted it and wanted hubby to ship it to him. He sent a check for $1500 and said it was to cover the cost of shipping and to send the extra money back to him if there was any. The name on the check was Justin A Lucian. ( Just an illusion) the guy was good. Well, our bank refuses the check because the account doesn’t exist. The routing number was where the account number was supposed to be and Vice verse. The guy even put a tracker on the check so he knew we received it. He texted with the FBI threats and we were going to be arrested, we were going to jail….yada Yada Yada. We still have the check tacked to the workshop wall. Too funny.
Yesss!! It’s crazy these days. I get at least 2 or 3 of those for every item I post. Now I say CASH ONLY and they still do it. Got to the point where I just started telling them “cash only. Don’t wanna get scammed.” And then…. Crickets. Be careful out there girl. The lengths they go to are insane.
I sell a ton of stuff on facebook market place and I can’t tell you how many scammers I get for each item! They want your phone number immediately and they have one profile picture only updatesd recently 1 friend on profile lol go scam someone else. cash only on pickup and no you don’t need my phone number WTH!
I don't like Zelle, whether banks use them or not I stay away. TFS and making us aware. You have to be careful for the most part on marketplaces with all the crazies in this world.
It's got to where you can't just nobody anymore. I get scam calls all the time. I do not answer them. I just block the number. If it's important people will leave a message. Stay safe girl❤
I've had that scam happen to me in email form and phone. Thankfully I caught the fact that "you want me to give you money to buy something from me?????" However I will say they've had my mother-in-law in tears threatening to call the sheriff. Just be careful eveyone❤
My husband works in cyber security, this is a very common scam that so many people fall for. Always look into a persons account before starting a conversation/transaction. So many scammers use fake family photos or an elderly couple to look honest. Sorry this happened, I’m glad it worked out!
That’s part of the banks job is to try their best and stop this stuff. It’s sad but they got you at a time that your mind in in 10 different directions. The bank I worked for unfortunately a scammer took a lady for about $60,000. We tried to talk to her and stop it but she was fully convinced they were legit.
Also they use zelle as the scam because it's very hard to recover your money once it's sent. They know this. Just don't do anything if a person has all these requirements to do a sale with them.
Sorry this happened. I was a victim of a scam too on a different level and now i am suffering the consequences. I am so careful now about everything and question everything that seems a little off. These scammers are getting good, but its truly sad they go to these lengths for a few hundred dollars. Everyone stay vigilant!
Marie, I'm glad those losers didn't get by with their scam. I'm sad you didn't keep that piece, I loved that piece. It was beautiful, I loved it. Sorry you had to go through all that trouble with those low-life scammers. I hope they get busted soon.
I’m sure they’re in Nigeria, where most of those scams are run from. The $250 sounds like a small amount, but if they get that out of even 10 people per day, they’re making pretty good money. Thank goodness, even tired, your were still too logical to fall for the whole thing.
People really suck. I'm so sorry you had to deal with that, Marie. They took advantage of your kindness and a moment of weakness you were having. Do not be hard on yourself. I'm so glad you were not out any money!
Using God's word to work a scam, that is so sad. I'm glad you caught on, because you were probably one of 200 they were working that day. So even if they even get 100 people to fall for it that's big chunk of change to make.
The same thing happened to me, but they tried to do it with Venmo. Lucky I figured it out before any of my money got involved. I’m glad you shared this for others to know, because these kinds of things are happening and everyone should know.
I’m so sorry that happened to you. That’s horrible! I almost got scammed too and they were asking me if I had Zelle too. That app must be easy for people to use to scam others.
Sorry to hear about your ordeal. It happens to even the brightest of people. A lot of the scammers are from Nigeria or India. There are guys on UA-cam (hackers themselves) who hack into the scammer’s computer and catches them red handed averting someone from getting scammed. Glad it worked out for you Marie!
Some lady around here got killed when picking up something on marketplace. She was trying to get the money lower and he killed her. I’m sorry that happened to you. Scammers everywhere!
Don't beat yourself up. You had a lot going on, you were tired and when anyone is like that it takes longer for your brain to connect the dots. You should have said, Oh FBI, good idea, my neighbor is FBI let me run across the street and give this to him. He can probably figure it out in no time. That would have put a halt to it. Maybe it should be reported to the FBI.
Marie Sorry to hear what had happened to You. At least your Bank did the Awesome Job in blocking. Truly Enjoyed Storytime with Marie. Hopefully there will be more Storytimes soon ? Hugs 🤗 from California 🌞
I am sorry this happened to you. Cash is king! When your mind is full and stressed its really easy to get duped by people. Scammers have no morals!!! Don't feel.sad for these people, we live in a society that some people don't want to work.for their stuff, its easier for them to steal. They dont get caught or punished for there actions!
My grandma got called at her house saying that my brother her grandson was in jail and needed bail money. I got scammed the same way trying to buy a puppy. This world is sad just wish people would stop taking advantage of people and all the energy they use to scam they could just get a damn real job.
Similarly, people bring in counterfeit $20s and make two different purchases to get change/break them.
YES! 35 years in retail,1st thing i thought of.
Yes! They were called “Flim Flam Artists” They’d confuse you so bad and then they walk out with more money.
Back on my day, some ppl even put pennies in dime rolls to get back change lol
I remember receiving training on this. Naughty people!
I've had requests like that on Marketplace. Now I put on my post "Cash Only and anyone asking to pay any other way will be blocked and reported". We have to be so careful on FB marketplace now, so many scammers out there, even makes me nervous about strangers coming to pick up items.
That and Craigslist. No.

You shouldn’t feel embarrassed because you said it your self you weren’t in the head space to deal with it. That’s crazy.
Na. We definitely should feel embarrassed when such things happen.
So sorry this happened to you Marie. You’re an honest person and that’s why they were able to confuse and threaten you. Thanks for sharing because you probably helped others. Take care 💕💕💕💕
Yes, so sorry, and thank you! 🤗
Unfortunately it's not out of desperation, it's their way of life.
They tried pulling a scam on my 91 year old mom until I stepped in, they did the same with threats of FBI, local police etc.... Glad everything came out OK for you.
I have been hit with “attempted” scams so many times…I have a hard time trusting anyone anymore! Sorry it happened to you Marie…it sucks!
But what you’re doing telling your story is great…let’s people know what to watch for!!!
Yes for sure all my trust is gone
Sorry this happened. You certainly didn't need to be dealing with that while you were trying to pack and get moved. Glad that you're back where you want to be!😊
I don’t think they are desperate. I think they are too lazy to get a job. Glad you didn’t fall for it and sending them the money anyway.
Unfortunately, that is their job! 🥹
We live in a VERY SICK society now a days with so many really bad people when it comes to the internet these days Marie. You were tired and fell for what a lot of us have fell for at one time or another. Your good and that's what counts. Yea for you ! Maureen

Probably Nigeria
@@adahkopacko7304 exactly!!!!!
Wow that’s crazy! Yes about 10 years ago I had something similar happen to me and I too was scammed for hours til I figured it out 🤷♀️
In my experience, if someone has to tell me how much of a Christian they are, it’s because you wouldn’t know it by their actions.😊
Perfectly stated! 🙌🏻
I will never sell anything on Facebook because of this. Too many scammers that do this with furniture ive had it done and my brother also.
Thank you so much for the PSA! What a helluva situation! Those people are a waste of good oxygen.
You know it’s funny, I was driving to my daughters house and they had a big city light up sign on the side of the road telling people to be careful because there are Zelle scams going on
They caught you at a weak/vulnerable time while trying to move. That's why so many scammers are successful. Always take a breath & think twice!
I removed & canceled all apps from my phone, as well as deleting all my banking info. I also contacted my bank. So many are getting scammed & hacked I said no more. If i sell anything you have to have cash, no checks... period . It's a crazy world... So sorry this happened to you..
So sad what extent people will go to for a few dollars and try to prey on unsuspecting people. Horrible!
I can’t stand a thief! I’m so glad your bank blocked it and you weren’t out that money!
Too funny.
Omg
There are so many scammers out there and they really get creative. It’s tough when you are a trusting good person.
Just glad you didn't lose any money! Thanks for sharing ♥️
I've had that scam happen to me in email form and phone. Thankfully I caught the fact that "you want me to give you money to buy something from me?????" However I will say they've had my mother-in-law in tears threatening to call the sheriff. Just be careful eveyone❤
It's sad because they just need to get a J O B! They could have cleaned your bank account out!!
My husband works in cyber security, this is a very common scam that so many people fall for. Always look into a persons account before starting a conversation/transaction. So many scammers use fake family photos or an elderly couple to look honest. Sorry this happened, I’m glad it worked out!
Glad everything worked out. This world is crazy. Thanks for sharing, it helps us to be aware.
That’s part of the banks job is to try their best and stop this stuff. It’s sad but they got you at a time that your mind in in 10 different directions. The bank I worked for unfortunately a scammer took a lady for about $60,000. We tried to talk to her and stop it but she was fully convinced they were legit.
That is truly sad
@@adahkopacko7304 it’s hard to watch they got her right after she lost her husband of 35+ years of marriage. Some people are horrible
Another youtuber's mom got scammed because they called her and said they had kidnapped her daughter and the mom lost like 1000s of dollars.
Also they use zelle as the scam because it's very hard to recover your money once it's sent. They know this. Just don't do anything if a person has all these requirements to do a sale with them.
I get crap emails every single day. Scams. I don’t even open them. Delete.
Thank you for sharing this! You are a genuine kind human. I’m so sorry that during such a chaotic time someone put you through extra stress. Big hugs!
FB marketplace is a nightmare. I don’t do it anymore. So many scamming losers.
So sorry I hear you . I been looking to be closer to my daughter & grandsons it's so hard. Yes I remembered that haul with that piece. ❤
Probably foreign scammers. I used to see it a lot when I was a banker. Could also be an AI scam robot responding. 😳
Sorry this happened. I was a victim of a scam too on a different level and now i am suffering the consequences. I am so careful now about everything and question everything that seems a little off. These scammers are getting good, but its truly sad they go to these lengths for a few hundred dollars. Everyone stay vigilant!
OMG! Who has that kind of time to do this crap. They should be ashamed. Karma will get them. 😡
I’ve been hearing about this scam. It’s so discouraging that thieves make things so difficult. I’m sorry you had to deal with this!
Marie, I'm glad those losers didn't get by with their scam. I'm sad you didn't keep that piece, I loved that piece. It was
beautiful, I loved it.
This happened to me once!! It wasn’t for this high amount but it almost got me too!
Ugh sorry! I had a similar situation with fb marketplace and Zelle
Glad you didn’t loose any that the end of the day, these scammers are so damn crafty these days.
Something very similar to this happened to my husband! Same thing with the FBI talk and everything! Crazy!!
Thanks for sharing!! How stressful!!!! Karma is a B!!!!
There is no Ephesians 20:15. There are only 6 chapters in that book. 😂
Hi Marie!! All scammers should go kick rocks w flip flops!!!🤬
Marie Sorry to hear what had happened to You. At least your Bank did the Awesome Job in blocking. Truly Enjoyed Storytime with Marie. Hopefully there will be more Storytimes soon ?
Hugs 🤗 from California 🌞
That is a big time scam Zelle is not that complicated sorry that happened to you
It's not just 1 person..I've been trying to sell a few things on Facebook marketplace and this happens everytime the item is worth more than $100
I am sorry this happened to you.
The words FBI & Bible verses shouldn’t be said in the same sentence 😳. I’m glad you shared this so we don’t get scammed also.
