If you’re in the reselling business, you will deal with scams from time to time. When communicating about items and payment, it’s always better to take a minute to slow down if things are starting to go off track. If you have a gut feeling that something isn’t right, it probably isn’t.
We’re going to dive into five common scams you might see if you are selling on local apps like Facebook Marketplace, OfferUp, and Craigslist. These are the most common ones we have dealt with throughout our reselling career.
Scam #1 - They Ask For Personal Information
Right up front, a scammer might ask you your email or phone number, but don’t give them all your personal information.
If somebody's reaching out and doing that, typically any of these marketplaces they are going to set up a meeting point with you to where you can meet up with them. Message them in the app, stay in the app. Don’t hand out your address or phone number. Be on the lookout for people trying to get too much information from you.
Typically if someone does want to connect with you via telephone, they’ll reach out and give you their number. We don’t share our number unless someone has reached out and said, “Hey, this is my phone number. You can contact me to set up the arrangements.”
Stay on the platform as long as you can.
    Scam #2 - “I Sent You Payment”
Sometimes they want your email so they can “email you a confirmation” of payment, which means they’ll send you a photoshop of a payment and it’s not really in your account.
We actually had someone try that and the guy got on the phone with me. It was the only time we’ve had a scammer get on the phone. He sent me a PDF or a picture, that he sent payment and the payment was coming my way. But my bank account didn’t have it so I knew it was a scam. Until I see it in the account I won’t send the item.
People are going to extreme lengths to scam people so just protect yourself and be careful.
If somebody does want your email address and they're trying to pay you through Zelle or Venmo while you’re meeting in person, make sure you have the app open and see the money come through before you hand over the item.
    Scam #3 - Gift Cards
Don’t ever buy gift cards to release funds. They’re not sending you legit money; they’re just trying to get money from gift cards.
Some people will tell you, “Hey, go get me $200 in gift cards and I'll give you a thousand dollars for this item, but I need $200.” And just know it's a scam. Anytime they're trying to get you to buy gift cards when you're trying to sell something to them, stay away from it.
Scam #4 - Wanting To Overpay For An Item
This usually happens when you first list something and one of the first people to message you is a scammer. If you have an item listed for $200 they might offer you $500 or $250. Anytime they’re offering something extra for the item, it's usually a big red flag.
They’ll ask you to hold the item while they send you the money and will have someone come and pick it up once the check clears. They’ll ask for your bank account info for the cashier’s check. Stay away from it.
I know if I want something, I'm not paying more than I have to. Typically I'm offering people less money than what they're asking. The only time it might happen legitimately is if you have a super hot item and someone wants to pay you $20 extra or something to get prioritized as the buyer. And they’ll usually want to meet up with you right away so they can get it. They won’t ask for your routing number or other personal info.
Scam #5 - Family Picking It Up
Number five is, “My cousin's uncle's brother had an emergency, so somebody else is going to pick it up.” This one is also probably tied into gift cards. If someone else is picking it up, it’s a red flag. Not always true, but generally. If it’s a furniture item, maybe they actually need to have someone with a truck pick it up. But usually people will meet you and pay for the transaction there.
When you hear phrases like emergency, you know it’s probably a scam. Or if they’re on the ship in the middle of the Atlantic, that’s probably not real.
Trust your gut. If it doesn't feel right, get somebody else's opinion.
Once you start seeing scams, you can recognize them. It really only takes two or three messages back and forth and then you're done and you know it.

@@FunkyBananaBear I'm curious too...unless it's the typical thing where they intentionally overpay you (by a little or a lot) and then ask for a refund (in which case, you'd have to send their own zelle/venmo/cash app a brand new payment from your account) and then a few days later, you get an alert that the original payment they sent you was removed because it was from a stolen/hacked account. So you are out whatever amount you "refunded" them for and will never see that money again since they will have withdrawn their money immediately after you sent it and be long gone. You could open a case, but there are very little protections in place for these types of local sales, which is why Facebook suggests you go through their payment portal only. (though the seller loses a percentage that way and payments take longer to go through, so it's less appealing)

That’s a bad one, typically they are creating a Google Voice account with your phone number and your name will be linked to that account. They will then proceed to use that Google Voice number to scam other people.

Cash is king period! Any other form of payment using online applications is a no no. You as the sender/receiver are not protected unless you pay for the service which makes the whole buying and selling aspect more expensive. Anyone has the ability to cancel and refute a transaction even if it has been cleared. Disputes like this happen all the time which in most cases both parties accounts will be terminated even if fault wasn't yours. Stick with cash! My 2cents.

The whole time none of this activity was actually happening on my real Venmo account. I told the dude to give me cash or the deal was off. He says, “Laugh. When I answer yes, they reply that they want to buy it (they don't negotiate) but they're busy with work (always the same line) and they will send TNT or Amazon deliverers to pick up the item and pay me with 'liquid money' - (do they mean Cash?). Anyway, I haven't gone further with these conversations as I'm not sure if it's a scam. The red flag for me is that they are 'very interested but they are busy with work'. It just seems odd that they use the exact same line.

I Just tried selling for the first time recently. Not a great experience. Just very annoying. All people interested first in buying, were foreign names and from a newly created " Group" with newly updates photos, NOT an actual personal facebook account..which I thought was strange. I wasn't sure if people do that for privacy reasons or not when buying but seems sketchy to me. Then noticed that was the first thing they were trying to do was get an email or cell number. One gave me there supposed cell and wanted me to text them, (again trying to get my cell #) I looked up the number and it was on the other side of the country. I told them all communication was to be done through facebook messenger and Also that I noticed that the number they gave me was from another state way across the country. Then not another message from them. Then got some non-foreign messages from the same newly created group thing. I just started ignoring messages until someone sent one from an actual established account, that wasn't just created so that I could view the profile and kind of check them out at least, . Then some seemed legit but after asking if available and wanting me to deliver it to them when it clearly state local pickup, Who the heck has time for all that nonsense! I don't know if I will continue to try selling things on there.

It's too much work to get on here and established only to have facebook ban or block me from their buying/selling groups while allowing many of these spammers and scammers to make many hundreds of thousands of posts. Makes me wonder if facebook has some partnership with them. Did I violate facebook's policy by blocking obvious spammers or scammers?

First time on your channel. I am downsizing and planning to sell some stuff so I thought educating myself will be the first step. Just wanted to let you know how pleasant it was to listen to you both: at no point, neither of you tried to go over the other as you see these days on most couples (meghan and Harry, etc.) it was nice to learn of your expertise and experiences, thank you!. ps. I know you are very proud of your family, and you should be! but if I were you, I will remove the picture behind you where the faces of your kids show .... there are many weirdos out there :-(

Unfortunately, it's only secure for the buyer but not the seller. Sadly due to scamming, you'll probably need to start sending whoever is picking something up for you the cash in advance to do so and be sure to explain that to the seller. They'll know by your Facebook page though if you're a "professional scammer" or not by your friends or lack of. Thank you for your service 🙏 Sincerely ✌❤ 🇺🇸

Having heard of so many scams going on Facebook by folks who just trusted the instructions of the scammer makes me wonder how many of those being scammed are first time victims.
Why are they so gullible to believe total strangers our mother, fathers on down telling us "beware of strangers" over and over until we left home for our own reasons?
The complicated way they use to get you to believe you they are legitimate is (to me) a huge problem with me.
Is the population of gullible people that big that con artists can make a good living scamming people who are easy targets?

I've even had one guy try to pay me with a credit card, because he was low on cash, before coming to collect an item. He was very insistent and finally gave up because I'll only accept cash. Due to new banking rules in Australia banks can withdraw fraudulent funds any time up to six months after the event. Hence, any form of electronic payment is a risk, you don't know where the funds came from.

Yeah, I had someone send me a text telling me they lived locally but I should disregard the phone number shown (across the other side of the country). Then they asked me to call them at the number they provided to talk to an associate about coming to pick up the product the next day or the day after that. I looked the persons name up and there wasn't anyone with that name in that town and there wasn't anyone with that name from the location of the phone number area code. I did get some info that the persons name was big with the marxist society in this country, from about 80 years ago! I think that's how they wanted to capture my phone number.

This is not necessarily a scam it is false advertising I don't know how many times I've just skim through the curb alerts or the items that are free only to waste my time reading the whole article and looking at the pictures and they put in the description box how much money they want for each item when the beginning of the advertisement for their items is listed as free is it to draw customers in because I'm almost ready to just drop marketplace for my searches

If they give any scammy signs I just block em.
Now the only scam that gets through is I have had a person take the item sold for 20 and they took theirs and someone else’s item and left 5$

I took a truckload of mowers to the flea market but I didn't have time to show them to customers because I sell electronics and I was too busy. Trying to sell mowers at the flea market was a failure probably because I was alone with no help. I probably should have put fuel in them and let them idle because people asked about them all they wanted to know was if they ran because they looked like they were wrenched on a lot with parts from other mowers, that's because they are. I used to do lawn maintenance.
