Steve Perry, angelic, freak of nature and you would be correct. One of the absolute best and his stage presence was energizing. Neal Schon is a virtuoso on guitar and a freak of nature in his own right. Journey went on to be a huge success as we all know. Nice video showing where it all started. Wheel In The Sky, one of their many great and iconic songs.
Greatest group ever ! I litterly played every Journey album until I wore them out and bought new ones ! Steve Perry has a voice comparable to none ! Thank you Hari for the memories and the way you sincerely appreciate 🙏 music from my generation !
Steve's voice at around 3:33 is so ethereal and blends with Neil's guitar so seamlessly it's easy to mistake it for a keyboard or another guitar. Love it!
Something to Hide blows me away with Steve matching his voice with Neal's guitar, chord by chord. And my God, how high he goes and is in perfect pitch at the ending of the song! This man's voice has blown me away since 1978, listening to the Infinity album.
@@robertjohnson5796 He owned the octave above C5, but could only momentarily hit C6. He had 5+ octaves, but Journey only let him use the upper 3. When he started going solo and using his full range, many were confused and didn't believe it was him. BTW, he was recorded hitting a B5 live at the age of 65.
When I was in the Air Force (many years ago), when this song came on the radio in the hanger where my shop was, the acoustics were awesome and Perry's voice and the guitar solo would just echo and boom in there it was the best.
Steve singing in such a high pitch with Neal’s guitar solo is just phenomenal! Most people miss it at first. Steve’s voice is so unique and beautiful. Such a once in a lifetime voice that was a wonderful part of my youth. I can listen to Steve 25/7 and never get tired of him.
I'm convinced that vocalists like this only come around once every 60 years or so. The raw power behind even the high notes is insane. That's why to me Freddie Mercury and Chris Cornell come second.
Awesome blast from the past, amazing vocals, actually his voice is historically the best vocals, bestowed the nickname “The Voice” Thanx for awesome reaction
Hello Harri. There was an overabundance, of extremely talented musicians, as well as, vocalist throughout the later part of the 60's, and, into the 70's. I believe, there are several things to remember, when asking why the musical talent was more prevalent during those times, & what set this in motion. The first, was when the Beatles changed the world, by appearing on the Ed Sullivan show in 1964, on a Sunday night. Every youngster I knew, was inspired to be a rock & roll star, including, yours truly. The second thing to remember, is there were no video games to monomopolize youngsters time, money, & interest. Those were times when there was a lot less to entertain youngsters, musical groups were very popular, growing more popular every day. In today's world there is an overabundance of youngsters who excel at having hand, eye coordination. Back in the 60's & 70's there was an overabundance of people who excel at shredding their guitar 🎸. That's my theory anyway.
you're right that there was an overabunance of extremely talented musicians from the '60's through the early to mid '80's. for steve perry and neil schone to have been able to stand out amongst all that talent back then shows how good they were. there was also that special chemistry that they had in that band along with their song writing skills that pushed them into that rare group of "super" bands. the lead guitarist (neil schone) initially was with the band "santara"
@nancywyatt821 his hair sure did have it's own zip code. I remember journey had a different lead singer before perry. I thought the guy was good. I was initially liked the sound that journey had. It took me a bit to warm up to Steve perry and the new direction that the group went. It turned out to be the best move. Steve perry is my favorite male singer
@@draco4540 Robert Fleishman actually helped write Wheel in the Sky, and you can find his demo of it on you tube. He was their lead singer for about 6 months. Herbie and an executive with the label both wanted Steve instead, and they were right. They let Steve do a demo and compared the two of them and Steve won.
Journey is one of my favorite bands from back in the day..brings me back to sneaking into my sisters room when she would go out and listen to her records while she was out..
Harri, this was the studio cut dubbed over live footage. But if you've never heard Steve Perry sing live, he's one of the best in the biz at delivering a vocal sound remarkably close to the studio cuts. As for the guitarist with the giant 'fro, his name is Neil Schon, and prior to Journey, he cut his teeth as a guitarist in Santana. And you know Carlos doesn't just hire any guitarist. lol
I think it was on the Midnight Express. Wasn't that live? I don't think Steve's voice could pass for female though. I never ever mistook him for a woman on the radio. But yes, his voice is magical here. One of my favourite Journey songs that I only discovered a few years ago. As we age, we tend to like the familiar stuff. Only Journey has managed to make me love songs I missed years ago because I live in the Caribbean, and we came late to Journey and only played the big 80s hits. Lights, Any Way You Want It and others I never heard before have captured me forty years after their release. Only Journey!
You must listen to Steve's solo work, his albums are all here on UA-cam. Street Talk, For the Love of Strange Medicine, Traces, and his greatest hits has random singles that weren't on the albums.
I come from a very musical family and myself was in band and choir throughout jr and sr high school so I’m versed in this thing called music. When Steve was in school he was “classified or ranked” as a soprano tenor which I e not heard of before. This may explain hi high pitch and how he can sustain those notes like no one else. He is amazing!
This song got me to go buy my first Journey album.. They were a great band and it was sad when it was over. I still get teary eyed when I hear Faithfully. Your reaction to that song was awesome
The Great Aynsley Dunbar is the one on drums. Neil Schon on guitar who with keyboardist Greg Rollie were the with Santana then left to form The Golden Gate Rhythm Section - later renamed - Journey when they got their own record deal. Greg was the lead vocalist before Steve Perry came onboard, also was the original lead vocalist for Santana until his departure. Ross Valory on Bass. This was the original Journey recording lineup then Steve was added three years later to record their fourth album (this one) and the rest is history. Aynsley left the band after this tour due to "difference of musical direction/opinions".
They did give you something mighty, their great musicianship but Steve Perry's falsetto during Neal's guitar solo. It always gets a reaction because it's powerful and out of this world phenomenal.
Journey and I originate from San Francisco 🌁 This is 1 of the early hits I remember! He joined Whitesnake 🐍 🇬🇧 and other groups. I like Rod Stewart too! 🇬🇧 1 of my favorite male singers! 👨🎤
Yes, Steve has a beautiful voice. Amazing talent that always delivers. The saddest thing about big hair in the 80s is now most of them don't have any, LOL...think Peter Frampton. Sad to see but inevitable for many I'm afraid as we age. Journey is a great band, but especially so with him as the lead singer. We were so very fortunate to have such great music in the 60s/70s/80s, so much talent and so much to choose from and all of them had their unique sound and personality. Thank you, Harri!
There was a recent photo of Steve Perry with his old friend the drummer Steve Smith from a party to celebrate the 40th anniversary of of his band, (crap, can't remember name right now). Smith was the long time drummer with long red hair, but always had side projects going on. Smith was totally bald with a small white beard, Perry had a full head of silver hair. Life just isn't fair sometimes.
I'm checking out all the reactions to this song on UA-cam, and seeing if any of the people reacting even notice Steve's Stellar high notes during the guitar solo, and so far nobody is even remarking about these remarkable vocals.
Harri, Steve’s vocal idol is Sam Cooke! They even share a birthday. Listen to Sam again- you can’t unhear it! Especially when Steve sings “ Lovin’ Touchin” Squeezin”
I think this song is the best one to really show off Steve Perry's voice. At least for me anyways. The way he lets his voice go on & on @ the end of the lyric. This is my favorite Journey song.
