The Guitarist is Neil Schon and is one of the founding members of Journey back in 1973. He also was a guitarist for the band Santana.

From their 6th album, from 1980, " Departure", this was the lead single.
Heavily influenced by the Irish hard rock band Thin Lizzy, who they were touring with, Steve's powerful vocals deliver these empowering lyrics in this timeless favourite.
This song paced by short smart drum shots and quick choppy guitar licks, powered by a soaring hook and an energetic and catchy melody, made it to Number 23 on the Billboard Hot 100's. This addictive song has been used in many shows, commercial and is a tour favourite. Fabulous. 🎸🎸🎸 Great reaction Harri. Thanks Harri and Imadrummin. 👏👏 Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦

Carlos Santana formed Santana in my hometown San Francisco 🌉 in the 1960s. He asked Neal Schon to join Santana. He dropped out of Aragon High School, in San Mateo.
Eric Clapton asked him to join. But Schon said he already was in Santana.
50 years ago 🎂. Schon and Greg Rolie left Santana and formed Journey.
Robert Fleischmann joined Journey. Meanwhile, Steve Perry was the lead singer of Alien Project. 👽 Bass guitarist Michael Richards Haddad died on a car 🚗 accident. The band broke up. Fleischmann left. Thus, Journey hired Steve Perry.

Schon was warned by other guitarists (including Carlos Santana) that Clapton's band was a toxic environment and to steer clear. How right they were as heroin took Clapton down and was a struggle for Clapton for years. For a long time I was sure that Clapton's name would appear in a tragic news headline ala Hendrix.

@@heyhuey4429 Carlos Santana, et al were right ✅ You had the precaution. Better safe than sorry 😞. Add the red flag 🚩: Yardbirds, Cream 🍦were 2 breakups.
Neal Schon was just a teen in his contract with Santana. Because Santana was local, Schon already knew the area unlike London, UK 🇬🇧, where Eric Clapton was.

I just saw an interview with Schon talking about how the owner of the Keystone Korner in San Francisco would let him in the back door when he was only 14, and he'd do guitar battles with other guitarists. Then one night someone told him "come with me" and took him to the Fillmore Auditorium to meet Bill Graham and play onstage with BB King. He hadn't even been playing that long: he was a guitar prodigy.

no one speaks about Journey before Steve Perry and their pop direction. It's a shame, Shon and Greg Rollie founded the band coming from Santana and created a hard driving bluesy sound so different from the " known" Journey. If you want to hear Shon at his finest, listen to something from their 1st album. All nailed down by the great drummer, Ansley Dunbar with Rollie on keys and vocals. Just awesome! In my opinion......

NS, Steve Smith, & Greg Rollie all began with Santana. I've seen Journey at least a dozen times over the years. The most iconic was at The Houston Summit for their Escape Tour. I was sitting stage left between rows 4-5. What a way to cap my senior year in high school.

…..Neal Schon in my opinion is the most underrated guitarist from the 70’s & 80s ! I seen Journey on the “81” tour (Escape) with a girl I was seeing at the time just to make her happy…. I was into Judas Priest, AC/DC, Rush…..etc Have to be honest ! I was blown away how much Neal Schon shredded ! Instantly became one of my favorites 🎸❤️🔥

Another Journey tune where guitarist Neal Schon is the feature act, so to speak, is pre-Steve Perry tune "Look Into the Future." HIGHLY recommended. He also has a great guitar solo in "Mother Father - Live in Houston 1981" where Steve Perry will also blow your mind.

Harri, always love your reactions,. and I really like how you do them. You don't interrupt during pivotal moments in the song normally, but if you have to, you will go back and let that moment reintroduce itself for the best effect on the listener's ear. Because of this, I think you must be a musician , play some instrument or sing.
Getting back to the subject at hand, like others have said, the guitarist is Neil Schon. One of my favorite things about his style, is that he always plays solos appropriate to the song, and yet, he always finds a way to add flash and sped without it being obnoxious. If you notice, even in in their ballads, he will build the solo and then add some flash. He's a lot like Steve Lukather from TOTO in that method of playing.

In my opinion Neil Schon is one of the most underrated guitarists in the world. His playing is great on the Steve Perry superstar version of the band. But if you want to really hear great guitar, listen to the first 3 Journey albums before they became mega stars. A few songs I recommend including Of a Lifetime, Look into the Future, and Nickel and Dime.

One last thing. If you havem't reacted to it, please react to , Mother, Father. This is one where Perry's voice is probably the most powerful of anything in their catalog, and, Neil Schon's solo is probably the best of the best. The emotion in that song, because it is a true story from Neil's life, if I remember correctly, is something I don't know if any other song has touched. Neil's guitar , it simply cries out to the listener, then screams and wails in pain and anger. It is amazing. If you haven't heard it, it will floor you.

The band should have used a bit harder production, bringing the instruments more prominent. As it is it still leans bit too much towards the 70's soft rock that this band was among them who overthrew it. The live version is better in that respect.

Saw Journey live a few months ago for their 50th anniversary tour! The band still has it!1 The audience was on their feet from the moment Journey stepped on the stage until the concert ended. Most of the audience sang along with every song.
Regarding the songs, depends on the era, who wrote the songs. But Jonathan Cain (Keyboardist) and Steve Perry (lead singer) wrote most of Journey's 1980's hits.
    Regarding the band:
Neil Schon - Lead Guitars, founding member of Journey back in 1973. Schon has also performed with Santana, Jan Hammer, Bad English, and other artists.
Jonathan Cain - Keyboards - 1980-present. Keyboardist for The Baby's prior to Journey and for Bad English during Journey's hiatus. Replaced Gregg Rollie.
Gregg Rollie - Keyboardist/Lead/Backing vocalist - 1973-1980. Original member. Was a member of Santana with Neil Schon before Journey. Left Journey in 1980 due to internal conflicts with band members. Has remained active with other bands and a solo career ever since. Lead vocalist for Journey from 1973-1977.
Deen Castronovo - Drums (1998-Present) Current Journey drummer, but was NOT a member during Journey's peak in the 1970's-80's. However, was the drummer for Bad English, which consisted of Neil Schon (Journey), Jonathan Cain (The Babys, Journey), John Waite (The Babys), Ricky Phillips (The Babys) back in the late 1980;s.
Aynsley Dunbar - Drummer for Journey from 1974-78. Drummer for Journey's first 4 albums. Has also drummed for John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers; Frank Zappa & the Mothers; David Bowie; Lou Reed; Ian Hunter, Jefferson Starship; Whitesnake; Ronnie Montrose; Pat Travers; Michael Schenker, UFO, and many, many more acts.
Steve Smith - Drummer (1978-1985; 1995-2020) - The drummer during Journey's peak. Drummer for most of Journey's hits Consummate professional. Has performed with numerous artists outside of his time with Journey.
Arnel Pineda - Lead Singer (2007-present). Sounds like a clone of Steve Perry, hence Journey signing him as a lead singer. Is PHENOMENAL in concert!!!
Robert Fleischman - Lead Singer - 1977 - Briefly served as Journey's Lead singer, while on tour in 1977, before Journey signed Steve Perry. Fired from band
Steve Augeri - Lead vocalist (1998-2006) - Served as Journey's Lead singer after the band reformed in the late 1990's. Only sang on one album. Essentially the "cover band" singer for a washed up Journey on tour from 1998-2006.
Jeff Scott Soto - Lead vocalist (2006-07) short lived career with Journey, but a very successful singer for the past 40 years with numerous artists/acts. Not the right fit for Journey.
Steve Perry - lead vocalist (1977-1985, 1995-1998) The VOICE of Journey. All of Journeys hits songs were sung by Steve Perry. Journey transformed from a mediocre AOR band to one of the best bands in the world upon Perry's arrival in 1977!
Todd Jensen - Bass - (20021-present) Current bassist, but essentially a "cover band" musician,
Ross Valory - Bass (1973-1985, 1995-2020) THE BASSIST for Journey. Was the bassist for all but one album, and performed for most of journey's hits.
Randy Jackson - Bass (1985-1987)- Bassist for the album "Raised on Radio" and subsequent tour.
There have been a few others members, but of little consequence.
