This band has always worked well together. Great feel for each other without losing the grip on the soul of the song. Steve Perry - The Voice, Neal Schon - the real driving force of the music and his solo work is great compliment to Steve's vocals, Ross Valory - steady anchor, yet carries the music through the changes without being obtrusive, Jonathan Cain - great writer with perfect keyboard over/under lays. Steve Smith - one of the finest drummers in the business with a good dose of jazz. All members have satisfying backing vocals to Stev's excellent voicing. Always one of my wife's and my favorite bands. Faithfully is our wedding song.

Steve Perry has often said its the single hardest Journey song to sing, yet he sounds so much better on it live than he did in the studio recording! Its honestly a shame that more people haven't reacted to it. That ending alone is so far superior to what 95% of the singers out there could manage.
There was a cover band, Frontiers, lead by Jeremy. He was so good, Journey offered him the lead position. Jeremy could become Steve Perry. Steve, Barry Gibb, and Jeremy are rare talents. Great reaction. Thank goodness there are video & audio recordings.
Great Reaction Beth! Fun fact: Journey's original lead singer was their keyboard player Gregg Rollie. Steve Perry joined Journey on their Infinity album. On several of their songs, both of them sing lead parts. What a great band.
In this iteration Neal Schon and Ross Valory were the only "original" members at that point. Steve Smith was a session drummer and had his own jazz band Vital Information. Johnathan Cain was in The Babys before their breakup.
His instrument is undeniable but what drives his tone is the simple joy of singing. A songbird never worries about what comes out because it will be perfect.
Steve has been known to sing from the heart. He sings with emotion. Also, the first time he quit was when his mother died and touring for almost 10 years straight burnt him out. He lost his love of singing. First time I saw Steve Perry in Journey was in 1978. They toured until 1986-7 just about continuously with only months of ‘break’ while they were writing and making new albums.
The band was formed in 1973 and Perry joined them in 1977. He had given up on the music industry and was working on his stepfather's turkey farm when he got a call from Herbie Herbert, Journey's manager. The band had been told to find a new sound or lose their contract. They were not immediately taken with Perry, but Herbert insisted. I'm glad he did!
The tour right after this one, Frontiers, Day on the Green in Oakland, was my first concert. I was 13. My dad surprised me and my two older sisters with tickets. It blew my mind and my life was changed forever. Thanks for this reaction. This era was them in their musical and superstar peak. The band's earlier albums were fantastic, but with Escape and Frontiers they became a phenomenon. Glad I got to be there.
Saw them at the Rosemont Horizon in Chicago on the same Frontiers tour. Bryan Adams opened for them. I was 13 as well. I don’t remember much of it, except for Separate Ways which has forever been burned in my brain since that show.
Natural, God given talent. You cannot find another male singer who can even come close to his extraordinary vocal gift. Not one! That’s why his fans love him so much, he moves our emotions with his singing and songwriting.
It would be nice if the music industry was changed for the better but those garbage tools are rampant now....not to mention the singing styles that mask mediocre talent with vocal gimmickry. I mean, sure... people engaged in some gimmickry many years ago too but there were good singers in the mix. Now it is just vocal gimmickry...especially with female artists.
I’m case someone hasn’t already said, Schon and Rolie didn’t want Steve Perry in the band. They wanted a screamer, like Robert Plant, and the singer Perry ended up replacing Robert Fleischman. The band’s manager Herbie Herbert forced them to take Perry because they needed to get on the radio with their fourth album (first with Perry) or they would be dropped. The first song Schon and Perry wrote together, Patiently, came together in 15 minutes, and from then on everyone saw the light, that this was the new Journey. To be clear, they recognized the talent, Perry just didn’t fit their vision of Journey, until they wrote together.
@@nomadicrecovery1586 wrong, watch the behind the music again. Gregg specifically said they didn’t want someone who was crooning, they wanted someone who screams. Perry only was in the band because of one person, Herbie Herbert. Period.
Your reaction, the looks on your face, kind of made me emotional. There are a few people on the planet who were just gifted with something extra special. And it’s so wonderful to see your recognition of it.
Steve Perry has one if not the greatest and most beautiful voices in Rock History. Yes, it is part of the performance, but its also a semi unconscious expression. And Beautiful Beth...a wonderful review...and LOVED...your cover of Wicked Games...oh, and Extra Credit Ginger... Redheads of the World Unite. 😂 I was a Red...now I'm a Gray~ And in your exuberance...the Look...of Love ~
Absolutely! I remember when I heard he joined Journey, I couldn't believe he would do that. Steve Smith could play with anyone. He was on JLP's Enigmatic Ocean with Allan Holdsworth. Way too good for Journey. Then Journey got a lot better as an MTV pop band. Smart career move, even if he didn't know just how smart when he joined. :)
@@martyk656 crazy as well, after a good few years into journey, he changed his style somewhat and got even better. The teacher that helped him with that was the same guy that later did the same thing with Neil Peart.
This is from THE SHOW, filmed at the Summit in Houston, Tx., in 1981. My brother was there. I was watching it on MTV. I've heard many call it the greatest concert ever. I liked it.
Steve Perry is without a doubt the best vocalist in the history of music! His ability to do the things vocally that he does is so amazing. You feel every word he sings in your soul. He touches every emotion in your body all at one time. He is unmatched! Beth if you want to check out his Traces album listen to Sun Shines Gray , we’re still here, call on me, could we be something again. The whole album is great. Of course he sings in a lower range but he is still the one and only Steve Perry!
I think he was simply a natural. It didn't take him loads of practice. It emanated from his being. One of a kind talent that still shakes people from all walks to this day.
Steve Perry is so flipping amazing!!!! Absolutely love this performance. And Neal Schon… amazing guitarist. This is one of my all time favorite live guitar solos.
Love this band! As a singer myself, I love Steve Perry. His technique is perfect on every song he sings. I saw this line up of Journey in concert .. I've seen Journey 3 times .. Raise On Radio was a great tour too.. I had all the records .. incredible that you get to enjoy this live recording, Beth! They had no gimmicks, no auto tune, fireworks, just great music performed by great musicians.
Steve Perry is truly untouchable, vocally. I’m comfortable singing in a higher range, and the vast majority of Journey’s songs are just bordering on challenging in terms of vocal performance…and i’m a female! So, for him to be able to just ring like a bell in his higher notes is simply incredible. He’s my favorite male vocalist of all time.
Our generation, teenager in the 1980's, had the Greatest bands, singers and musicians who actually sang, played and performed for the crowd with no help from any electronics.
I came of age in the midst of the brilliance of the years of Journey… these were the songs you cranked the volume and sang at the top of your lungs. There were bands and singers with more power or driving songs but nothing pulled you along like journey.
How do you think they were "underrated"? They were and are one the most popular commercial pop/rock bands in history. Steve Perry has been voted the greatest rock voice in music history. I'm not sure you or anyone who uses "underrated" knows the meaning of the word.
I'm not sure that Neal is underrated as a guitar player, but I do think the chemistry and harmony between Steve and Neal ( voice and guitar) made them great, not Steve's voice alone. That's why Steve had limited success on his own. It was an amazing, amazing musical combination. Add in their masterful song writing with John Cain, and you have icons.
Yeah when he was 17 he was asked by Eric Clapton to join Derick and the dominos, but he was asked to join Santana too and decided Santana was the way to go. Not sure he is underrated but he’s damn sure one of the greats
Randy Jackson called Neal The Rock Dog. I saw them several times live, and I always brought my binoculars so I could watch him play. His solo stuff is great too. Beyond the Thunder is accustical electric, and is my favorite CD of his.
5 pieces of incredible talent that came together to bring us perfection........And Steve is on a level with no one. I'd give anything for new music today to be willing to be this good. Thank God for performers like, Adele who keep it alive and real to your core!
Greg Rollie was in the original lineup, before Johnathan Cain. Steve smith wasn’t their original drummer and Steve Perry came later. I would call the escape journey the original lineup for when they became a stadium band. But not for their prog rock days. Greg Rollie was amazing
This is the song that really turned me on to Journey back in the day. It was my favorite track on Escape but got overshadowed by other great songs like Don't Stop Believin'.
I saw your emotions change when the guitar solo began, that’s a great effect the guitar can have on you, it was actually crying and you were feeling it😊
Steve Perry is so unbelievably great. What you hear on the album is what you get live unless he does something off the cuff that you have to question reality. By god he is damn good.
Ok let's talk to much and enjoy this Natural talented man that have touched millions of people and still today like many others great singers. But steve is one and unique amazing singers. Love from Seattle wa US. 🎵🎶🎵🎶❤️🙂👌👌
Great reaction Beth this isn't the original lineup but it was a great lineup. This was an awesome album through-and-through and one of the best tours I've ever seen
I've been into Journey since the late 1970s. Perry's voice has few peers. He can evoke emotion while soaring and has immaculate control. In my book, his voice is legendary. :-D
You can thank the late Herbie Herbert who found the Alien Project tape that got left behind & after he heard it he told Neal Schon (formerly of Santana) that if he wanted to play large arenas again, this would be their best vocalist choice who can not only sing, but belt tunes all the way out to the cheap seats. Thank you, Mr. Herbert! 🥀 E obrigado, Sr. Perry! 🌹❤️
Never lose your wonder Beth particularly for someone as wonderful as Steve Perry. I discovered him via the American chart show back in the 80s and then went to see him over in Boston on his first and only solo tour in 1994. I still sit here with pure joy watching his performances 40-plus years later.
I'm so glad I got to see this band live back in the 80s when Steve Perry was fronting them. Better than the records, extended solos, extra vocal riffing by The Voice.. The whole band was so tight.. Didn't realize at the time how great we had it, so so many great live acts.
The other day our youngest son who is 12 told me he had a band and he thought I would like their songs……..it was Journey and Steve Perry. I felt so old but so proud of him for liking good music. 🤭
Steve Perry is one of the all time greats, right up there with Freddie and Dio. Btw, this was their classic and best known lineup, but not the original. Guitarist Neal Schon and bassist Ross Valroy, from this lineup, were founding members, but the original lineup was rounded out by vocalist and keyboardist Greg Rollie, rhythm guitarist George Tickner and drummer Aynsley Dunbar. Perry was brought in on their fourth album, Infinity, when they decided that they wanted a stronger lead vocalist.
I don't know if you take requests for reviews Beth, but 'Still They Ride' is another incredible Journey song. Steve's voice is amazing, and his ability when it comes to melody is flawless in my opinion. Hope you consider doing this one if you haven't yet. Stay safe and much love! Jim.
Oh boy! I saw them on this tour in May of 1982 for the Escape album. This isn't the original lineup. Journey formed in the early seventies with Gregg Rolle on keyboards, Neal Schon on guitar (after they left Santana), Ross Valory on bass and Ainsley Dunbar on drums. Steve joined in '74/'75, Steve Smith took over on drums. Gregg Rolle left after the Departure album, Jonathan Cain came on playing guitar and keyboards. He and Steve shared a lot of the songwriting through the eighties.
I saw him interviewed and as he told his life story you seemed to relate to everything he talked about . When a person gets so tired and burnt out the pain is too much for you. You mentally can't carry on. He met the woman he loved the most in his life, I believe was in remission from breast cancer. Seemed to be love at first site for both. She started his love for music again. She died after they were together 2 years.
His voice is so iconic... His solo album, for the love of strange medicine album, is worth listening. For me the song, somewhere there's hope, stands out. The guitar solo in that song is also one of the best I've heard in my life.
Beth, an absolute MUST from Journey is "Mother Father" from this same concert (Live in Houston - 1981)... you will be absolutely blown away by the notes Steve Perry hits at the end of the song.
My first rock concert was Journey on this tour. I begged my dad for tickets for my 14th birthday! They played several sold out shows in Chicago from 1981-1986. My favorite band from 1977-1987. Totally under-appreciated at the time.
Perry didn’t come around for years after band started…Rollie, Schon and Santana manager started Journey. Mildly successful before Perry. Became powerhouse after Perry. Saw them in May of 1983, unknown opening act, blonde dude from Canada named Bryan Adams…best show I’ve ever seen and I’ve seen 100’s since. Perry’s voice is perfection and Schon’s guitar was amazing.
"The Voice".........l grew up with all these songs. ( Even still, in my area....U can hear Journey on the Radio, ALL DAY. ) Amazing talent at every Spot on that stage.
It's just amazing how little effort Steve puts out when singing. The man was just natural. He also believed that he wasn't a big part of the band even when he wrote 90% of the most popular songs. You really need to check out "Mother, Father" from the same concert.
You commented on "head tilt" with Kenny Rogers singing Lady. Your enthusiasm with this reminds me of another of your reviews (don't recall the artists) where you referenced "15 year old Beth dancing in her room". Thank you, for being you. And sharing yourself.
I'm not sure if you've reacted to the song Mother, Father. It's a song performed from this exact concert. His vocals are amazing in that song and I think you'll love it! I live in Houston, Texas where this show took place and bought the DVD many years ago and still enjoy watching the whole show. But, check out the song Mother, Father ... you will not be disappointed!
Imagine having a lead singer such as Steve Perry leaving the band and then having to try to find a replacement. They did and although he isn't Steve Perry, he is very good and allowed the band to continue on. There will never be anyone who can completely replace the voice of Steve Perry.
On that moment in time, Journey was a perfect machine. Simply everything they did the did right, so we have a very Good song writing, a top notch musicians (just listen Neal Schon's guitar solo) and of the most iconc voices of that era. This live take is fantastic, indeed, Steve Perry conveys all emotion reqired by the song masterfully.
"This is incredible" - and it's live, no auto-tune, no lip-syncing, no gyrating dancers, a real band playing together - passionately. Real musicians!

The band's earlier albums were fantastic, but with Escape and Frontiers they became a phenomenon. Glad I got to be there.
Cow Palace, Raised on Radio. They sounded perfect live.
Saw them at the Rosemont Horizon in Chicago on the same Frontiers tour. Bryan Adams opened for them. I was 13 as well. I don’t remember much of it, except for Separate Ways which has forever been burned in my brain since that show.
@@escape081Yeah Brian Adams was on the Day on the Green set too. With Triumph, Eddie Money, and Night Ranger (who were amazing!).
@jrnyMEDIA Unfortunately, I do not.
Natural, God given talent. You cannot find another male singer who can even come close to his extraordinary vocal gift. Not one! That’s why his fans love him so much, he moves our emotions with his singing and songwriting.
Steve held the audience in the palm of his hand. Magical! I was lucky enough to see them several times and he never fails to deliver!
I've been to a few Journey concerts in the 80s. He and the band are so good live! And to think, this is before autotune.
Great reaction. Thank you!
He has such an incredible voice. Such an amazing talent.
Neal didn’t
Gregg was the one who brought him in
@@nomadicrecovery1586 wrong, watch the behind the music again. Gregg specifically said they didn’t want someone who was crooning, they wanted someone who screams. Perry only was in the band because of one person, Herbie Herbert. Period.
I was there for the recording of this show... They were just as wonderful in person.
Gingers Rule!
Now there's a musician that doesn't get anywhere near the love he should, their drummer Steve Smith!!!!! Dude is an absolute beast!!!!
@@randywissler9923 Freddie Gruber.
@@carlgibbons5777 thank you. For some reason I just could not remember his name.
Steve Smith’s work was genius and supported the song in every way
"The Voice" melting women's hearts all over the world.
His voice still melting my heart since I was 18 I'm 59 .
This is from THE SHOW, filmed at the Summit in Houston, Tx., in 1981. My brother was there. I was watching it on MTV. I've heard many call it the greatest concert ever. I liked it.
I was there. Amazing.
I Totally agree! His vocals are amazing and unmatched 🎼🎤
Steve Perry is a legend. Love Journey and Steve’s vocals.
Their performance of Mother Father from this same show is mind bogglingly impressive. I would love to see you react to that one.
She may not be ready for that yet. I mean, it's ungodly how good Perry is on that. That's a hint Beth, you need to react to it. ;)
Omg, yes! That really IS the one to do a react to. That performance was other worldly. ❤
Steve Perry is THE GOAT
Steve Perry is truly untouchable, vocally. I’m comfortable singing in a higher range, and the vast majority of Journey’s songs are just bordering on challenging in terms of vocal performance…and i’m a female! So, for him to be able to just ring like a bell in his higher notes is simply incredible. He’s my favorite male vocalist of all time.
What is amazing he is even better live than recording.
Our generation, teenager in the 1980's, had the Greatest bands, singers and musicians who actually sang, played and performed for the crowd with no help from any electronics.
Teenager in the 70's was even better.
This lineup did reunite in 96 and recorded their album trial by fire. When you love a woman is my favorite off that one but they're all good.
I came of age in the midst of the brilliance of the years of Journey… these were the songs you cranked the volume and sang at the top of your lungs. There were bands and singers with more power or driving songs but nothing pulled you along like journey.
Journey is so underrated. they transcend rock, country and pop. they still do that 40 years later.
How do you think they were "underrated"? They were and are one the most popular commercial pop/rock bands in history. Steve Perry has been voted the greatest rock voice in music history. I'm not sure you or anyone who uses "underrated" knows the meaning of the word.
Steve gets all the accolades, and rightly so. He's amazing, but Neal Schon might be the most underrated guitar player ever
I hardly think Schon is underrated.
Absolutely!!
And Journey is basically his band. Only original member left I believe. And he started with Santana at age 15. Amazing musician!
Yeah when he was 17 he was asked by Eric Clapton to join Derick and the dominos, but he was asked to join Santana too and decided Santana was the way to go. Not sure he is underrated but he’s damn sure one of the greats
The guitar solo at 8:40 just sounds so nostalgic and brings you back to yester-year.
The most melodic guitarist on earth, imo.
Too often Neal Schon is not mentioned when people talk about great guitar players. An absolute monster of a player.
Randy Jackson called Neal The Rock Dog. I saw them several times live, and I always brought my binoculars so I could watch him play. His solo stuff is great too. Beyond the Thunder is accustical electric, and is my favorite CD of his.
Haunting and mysterious- romantic.
5 pieces of incredible talent that came together to bring us perfection........And Steve is on a level with no one. I'd give anything for new music today to be willing to be this good. Thank God for performers like, Adele who keep it alive and real to your core!
Thank you Beth for reacting to my all time favorite Journey song! There was no one like Steve Perry! ❤❤❤
This is making me cry. I saw THIS.....He is the greatest singer of all time
Greg Rollie was in the original lineup, before Johnathan Cain. Steve smith wasn’t their original drummer and Steve Perry came later. I would call the escape journey the original lineup for when they became a stadium band. But not for their prog rock days. Greg Rollie was amazing
I've never understood why this song isn't as popular as others from the band. I think it's the best
Got just as much radio play as any Journey song here in Indy.
@@carlgibbons5777 Over the years, it is remembered less than others on the radio and has fewer reactions on UA-cam than others
This is the song that really turned me on to Journey back in the day. It was my favorite track on Escape but got overshadowed by other great songs like Don't Stop Believin'.
@@NaturalMystic69 For me this is the best song and then I like open arms, superbly sung
I saw your emotions change when the guitar solo began, that’s a great effect the guitar can have on you, it was actually crying and you were feeling it😊
Strings have that effect…
Yeah. The guitar solo is really the star of this song. I love his improvising at the very end, too. Schon is a true talent.
Steve Perry is so unbelievably great. What you hear on the album is what you get live unless he does something off the cuff that you have to question reality. By god he is damn good.
Wonderful reaction to the impossibly beautiful voice of Steve Perry!...& the amazing Neil Schon!
Ok let's talk to much and enjoy this Natural talented man that have touched millions of people and still today like many others great singers. But steve is one and unique amazing singers. Love from Seattle wa US. 🎵🎶🎵🎶❤️🙂👌👌
He’s so talented and the best ever amazing artist I always loved him ❤
He was so pitch perfect, golden voice, and so much emotion. Steve you are the king💕💕💕💕
I've been listening to journey for nearly 50 years. I have never heard steve perry hit a bad note. I saw journey on steve's first tour in 1977
Yes.. i saw Steve Perry and Journey in 1978 and 1985. Memphis and Hampton Roads. Incredible!!
@@ftgrat1 I saw journey on their first tour with steve perry open for boston
Great reaction Beth this isn't the original lineup but it was a great lineup. This was an awesome album through-and-through and one of the best tours I've ever seen
I've been into Journey since the late 1970s. Perry's voice has few peers. He can evoke emotion while soaring and has immaculate control. In my book, his voice is legendary. :-D
One of the best solo voices I've ever heard. Captivating. Just a great group, so in sync.
Steve Perry and Freddy Mercury have the BEST voices in rock. IMO.
Great music here. Epic vocals …I recently stumbled on their song Mother, Father. It’s phenomenal.
Herbert! 🥀
E obrigado, Sr. Perry! 🌹❤️
Senor Perrera! ❤❤❤❤
@@TheDivayenta Señior Pereira, if we want to be specific.
Jim.
Neil Schon rocks the guitar, as always !!!
He has that rare smoothness and soul in his voice.
What an amazing talent. Blessed to grow up when Journey was huge.
Steve Perry has the best voice in rock, his beautiful tone & the level of emotion he puts out is like no other.
An amazing voice!
I love seeing a young person show so much appreciation for music from back in the 80s - you're a doll by the way!
Beth, an absolute MUST from Journey is "Mother Father" from this same concert (Live in Houston - 1981)... you will be absolutely blown away by the notes Steve Perry hits at the end of the song.
yes!!! In my opinion...one of the greatest live vocals in rock music of all time
My first rock concert was Journey on this tour.
I Love Journey. And this song is beautiful and strong!!! Thank you, Beth 💚🍀
