If you like high go back and listen about 3/4 of the way and if you listen closely you will here a sound so high that myself thought was an instrument so a while. It is actually Steve Perry hitting incredibly high notes and holding it forever! He is amazing. It’s during the guitar solo. He really is one of the top five of all time!
You should/must react to Journey with Steve Perry live! They call him “the Voice” for a good reason. Open Arms, Mother Father, etc. Actually, anything from the Houston concert. By the way, more Styx, please.
Agree. They were probably the most consistent big act from about 1978-1985 or so. I saw them live in about 1983 and they were even better than I had anticipated. I was mostly into moderately heavier or more prog-rock; Rush & Yes were my favorites, but they girlfriend and some friends of hers really wanted to go to the Journey concert so we went (Indy at old Market Square Arena). Sold out- 18k. And they were on fire and incredibly good live. They were heavier live than the records and did some heavier jams throughout the show. Neil Schon was spectacular - not unexpected ofc - we all knew he was great from his work with Journey but also his records with Jan Hammer - a highly under-appreciated rock guitarist. But it was Steve Smith on drums that blew me away - so powerful live. To say nothing about how incredible Steve Perry’s vocals were live - he was even better than the records live. Most vocalist can’t recreate their studio performances - Steve Perry could exceed them. I do wish I’d seen them on the Infinity Tour, as it would have been great to have seen them with Greg Rollie on his last tour. I dug the back and forth vocals he and Perry would do. Those were/are my favorite Journey songs.
@@bobespirit2112 how amazing! Very few can sound that much better live. Wish I could of seen them. I’ve heard that Steve Smith was asked to play on many of the major rock records. They say he was very sought after
Been waiting for your next Journey reaction. So many great songs to react to. Steve Perry's vocal range and tone and Neal Schon's (shawn) bring their very best vocals and guitar riffs✨ those 2 are magic ✨ you said you hoped Wheel in The Sky would blow you away. All their songs will. Just when you think you found the one you like most, there'll be another one that'll comes along and knock you out. They are great in studio, but live they're exceptional, they add flava and it shows their connection to their audience. It's awesome to watch. Any song from the 1981 Escape Tour live from Houston. Also: Still They Ride, Mother Father, Open Arms, Why Can't This Night Go on Forever, Stone in Love, Don't Stop Believin', Lovin' Touchin' , Squeezin', Lights, Stay With Me Awhile.

The wheel in the sky is a metaphor for the sun and the moon, so the wheel in the sky turning refers to the days and nights going by despite everything else going on, and the time can seem like it goes by quickly or slowly. The song has a theme describing the sadness caused by separation. According to Journey’s Time compilation, “Wheel in the Sky” began as a yearning poem written by bassist Ross Valory’s wife, Diane.
Steve Perry is called " The Voice" Phenomenal vocalist. Cheers Steve! Seen Journey live they were Excellent! Sound just as good live if not better. Flawless performance.
My wet dream was always to see who I consider to be the best male and female voices of rock record a duet...Steve Perry and Ann Wilson. Can you imagine?!?
I saw them twice in their 1980s heyday. Steve Perry was the best live vocalist I've ever seen. What you heard in the studio recording was what you heard at the concert. Go back and listen to his vocals during the guitar solo in this song; he perfectly matched that live (no auto-tune back then!). I recommend "Anyway You Want It" next (if you've seen the movie, "Caddyshack", you'll recognize it).
You were talking about Perry's higher vocal moments, but you didn't comment, so maybe didn't notice, the high backing vocalization he does during the guitar solo. It's a little lower in the mix and blends so well that you hear it without actually noticing, but once you take note of it, you won't soon forget it. I think its often mistaken for keys, but its actually Perry. Mother Father, especially live 1980 Houton, is an amazing must listen. Also Sweet and Simple and Winds of March.
I've seen these guys twice, shortly after Greg Rolle left and Jonathon Cain joined, they never disappointed. The first time was in 1982, during the "Escape" tour and again in 1983 during the "Frontiers" tour. In fact their "Live in Houston" concert videos is the same tour I saw them on. Listen very, very carefully with the last guitar solo. It's Steve's voice going sooooo high it sounds like an instrument. Unless u see the actual live you'll miss it❤
This is how it usually goes, even though the Infinity album has plenty of great songs on it, still, the ones that usually get the attention are "Wheel In The Sky" and "Feeling That Way/Anytime", please, you are truly doing yourself a great disservice if you don't give the rest of the album a chance. The infinity album really showcases Steve Perry's vocal range, you heard it in "Wheel In The Sky". That 8-track tape was hard to hold on to because of people stealing it from me, it happened 3 times!! I now have the CD, of course, lol! This was just fantastic and I hope you'll consider what I said, thanks!
They were my very 1st live concert. They sound better than the recording. They also were never the same after the lead singer Steve Perry left. Sad sad day for me.
People used to draw a calendar as a 'wheel,' way back before modern calendars. The solstices were at the top and bottom, equinoxes at either side and whatever feasting days helped folk track when to sow seed, when to harvest, when to slaughter and salt meats . . . a nature calendar, if you will. Still love this song. It sounds just as good in 2023 as it did back when it came out-I was either a teen or a young adult. I've already forgotten what year it came out, and you mentioned it 10-11 minutes ago! 🙄
I remember in the early 80's when I joined a rock band after graduating from high school. I had never heard of Journey, but I started learning and singing Journey songs. Watching you discover Journey feels the same as when I discovered Journey.
This song is another example of why you should always react to the live version over studio. Just seeing and hearing Steve belt super high and flawless vocals…amazing. You can notice it better seeing it as you listen I think.
SalvoG, Hi Thank you so much for reacting to Journey. If you get into reacting to Journey going forward be prepared to be amazed. Journey with Steve Perry is "The Voice" a moniker given to Steve by Jon Bon Jovi and you'll see why. His Counter-Tenor Altino vocal range is phenomenal. Please listen to the official video of Wheel in the Sky, I think 1978. Steve Perry and Neal Schon (pronounced shawn) on lead guitar have a combined solo, and if your not watching the video, most reactors will miss it (and it seemed like you missed it)when Steve comes in with that falsetto range and does it so effortlessly. It's magic, those two have crazy vocal and guitar chemistry that you'll see time and again throughout Journeys' amazing playlist, these musicians; Steve Perry, lead vocals, Neal Schon -lead guitar, Jonathan Cain-Keyboards, (wrote all Journey's iconic songs) Ross Valory-Bass and Steve Smith Drum virtuoso started playing when he was 6 are all so talented. I recommend reactions to any songs from the 1981 Escape tour live from Houston. "Mother Father from that tour is amazing. Vocally it's a very difficult song to do and J. Cain said Steve did that in one take on the studio version, but live is other worldly. Also "When you Love a Woman" official video 1987, "Open Arms" escape tour 1981, "Lights" Official Video 1978 Neal slays his guitar solo on that one, "Why Can't This Night Go On Forever" official video. "Stay Awhile" Live from Houston 1981 Escape tour, "Still They Ride Live in Tokyo 1983. Again, Thank you for reacting to Journey and if you go down their play list you will be fascinated and so glad you did and so will your audience! promise! Peace
Feeling That Way/Anytime was a one two combo that FM stations played a lot from the "Infinity" album. They're two separate songs but are almost always played together, even live.
I wonder if you've ever come to register the vocals in the background of the guitar solo? That isn't more guitar but Steve going crazy high !!! Oh the control he has........
Journey has often been credited for the first 'Power Ballad' for their song Open Arms. This is fantastic! You should also check out Lovin', Touchin', Squeezin' Open Arms Separate Ways Faithfully Don't Stop Believing Lights and many more....
Ummm, no they haven't. Nilsson - Without You (1971), Styx - Lady (1972), Aerosmith - Dream On (1973), Nazareth - Love Hurts (1974) plus lots of others depending on your definition of a power ballad, but a song from 1982 is a good decade later than a number of songs that arguably lead the genre so it definitely doesn't qualify as the first.
Another high school obsession. I had every album they made. Between Neal Schon (pronounced shown) on guitar and Steve Perry vocals, couldn’t get enough! Another deep rabbit hole to dive into, you won’t regret it! Side note: I dream of hearing a Steve Perry/Mitch Grassi collaboration!
Agree, Infinity is their finest and one of the best albums of a the best decade in music. Try Winds of March off the same album. It's not like anything you've heard thus far.
Yes, I've seen them live 4 times. They actually sound better live. Best concert ever 1983 live at City Park Stadium in New Orleans. Day of Rock and Roll. Bryan Adams, Zebra, Foghat all opened for Journey that day. You should check out a couple of deep cuts that show off Steve Perry's vocals. "Winds Of March" also off the Infinity album and "Mother Father" off the 1981 Escape album. The entire 1981 concert was filmed live in Houston so you can get some great live footage from this concert, including "Who's Crying Now" where Neal Schon has an extended wicked guitar solo. P.S. Journey does not have a bad song in their catalog with Steve Perry singing on albums 4 through 10. This includes the 1980 live album Captured. Also, Steve Perry has 3 solo albums as well. This will be a deep dive and a long "Journey". Pun intended. Thanks and God Bless.
I ditto everything you said. I never new Mother Father until a couple of years ago and it blew me away. Also definitely better live. Very few bands can say that. I will say Bee Gees are too. Also amazing
Hey there, buddy! Love your vids! If you need a point of reference, Neal Schon, Journey's guitar player, was in the band Santana when he was only 15 YEARS OLD! If you haven't heard Santana, you might want to check them out. For years, Carlos Santana has been considered by many to be one of the greatest guitar players of all time. If you love guitar, you should definitely look into Carlos Santana. Keep doing what you're doing, and we'll keep watching! Lisa 💖🎸
Journey is another great one from my youth...one of my faves is "Girl can't help it". Give it a go, you'll live it. Steve Perry is one of the best vocals in history! They tried to replace him many time but no one can compare. Love them...keep em comin 😊
Steve Perry has one of the greatest voices in pop/rock. He is a true countertenor ..with a range of a high tenor/alto. His tone is clear and full and he does not sing with any distortion, in contrast to hard rock and metal singers. Like Jon Anderson of Yes and Geddy Lee of Rush, his voice is high…..but in contrast to them. Perry’s voice has great power and richness. It never sounds “thin” as many other high tenors so. This song is satisfactory as an introduction, but be aware that in no way does it show off Perry’s vocal chops in full. A current singer in that same league, or even better, is Adam Lambert, who in addition to his solo career, is now the vocalist for Queen when they tour. Incredible vocal chops.
Do a Reaction to Journey Escape Tour Live in Houston !981 with Lead Singer Steve Perry, They Sound even better Live it is Almost like being there, " Don't Stop Believin " " Open Arms " " Who's Crying Now " " Lights " " Stone In Love " " Stay Awhile " " Any Way You Want It " " Keep On Runnin " " Faithfully " Also " Girl Can't Help It " " Separate Way's " When You Love A Women " " Send Her My Love " Steve Perry Is called the " Voice " he is One of the Best If not the Best Singer in Rock History Steve had his own Songs " O' Sherrie " it Reached No. 2 and " Foolish Heart " No. 15
I have owned Journeys greatest hits as a cassette in my teens/early 20’s as a CD when I got older and now I stream still stream it. It’s been a staple and still always so good!
Wheel in the Sky is definitely a classic! ...and while you're technically correct when you say that it wasn't a "single," you have to realize that the era in which this song/album were released was dominated by AOR Radio Stations (AOR = Album Oriented Rock), where radio station playlists typically went deep into an album vs. playing the one or two "hits" record companies would release that corporate bosses would tell them to play. The on air DJs of that era had a lot more freedom than they do today. They would literally get a freshly released album, listen to the whole thing, and then play the songs they personally liked the best. A ton of songs/artists were discovered this way, and Wheel in the Sky was/is a staple of that format. BTW... If you want to get a great overview of early Journey, and more specifically, the first 3 albums of the Steve Perry era (Infinity, Evolution, and Departure), check out their live album called Captured. Another incredible live performance by the band featuring original keyboardist/vocalist Greg Rolie, who left the band soon after. He was replaced by Jonathan Cain, who you saw in the Escape Tour videos from Houston. .
First time I saw journey was the tour when this album came out! They are incredible!Steve perry's voice was mind blowing! I was able to see journey 2 more times and each time was incredible ! The Baby's were the warm up band and I think you'd like them also! "Head First" is an excellent album!the lead singer John Waite went on to a great solo career also. Ty for taking the time and sincerely appreciating great music!
Rush is my #1 all time favorite band (Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin following a close 2nd in no particular order), but you absolutely cannot go wrong with Journey, they have always been in my top 5. You just barely got a taste of Steve Perry's amazing vocal range... you won't be disappointed going down this rabbit hole. Fortunate to have seen them live a couple of times in the 70's, they sounded every bit as good (if not better) than their studio recordings. You mentioned you haven't heard any voices you haven't liked from this time period.. probably because you actually had to be able to sing to be the lead singer of a band.. no auto-tune to make you sound good back in the day.
Well…in my opinion, there is no top or bottom to a list of Journey songs. Their entire catalog is incredible and iconic. My recommendation is Mother, Father LIVE version.
Gregg Rolie and Neil Schon were in Santana and left to form Journey. Check out Santana with Rolie your in for a treat. I wish Rolie would've stayed with the band him and Perry would have been incredible. I wish it would've lasted longer. Check out Feeling that Way and Anytime.
Journey catalogue is amazing...vast and deep. My favorite Journey albums are Infinity and Evolution. Every single song on both albums are masterpieces. Looks like you missed the epic-stratospheric note Steve Perry hit during Neal Schon’s guitar solo. Journey is my favorite band. Saw Journey in 1983 during the Frontiers Tour. 3 sold out shows in my hometown. They were mega-huge. They sound even better live. Been a fan since 1981. React to Don’t Stop Believing or Lights or Mother Father Live in Houston Concert 1981-truly epic. Journey On!
I was a huge fan of Journey from the 80's - saw them live at the Rose Bowl with Aldo Nova, Triumph (Rik Emmett high register singer!) Blue Oyster Cult and Journey. Biggest food fight ever!! Shoes and Nacho's flying. Try listening to Ordinary Man by Triumph live and you'll know he is legit.
Another great reaction video to my favourite rock band Journey, thank you so much. Would you please watch the live video they did for this song from The Midnight Speical in 1978? Watching and hearing Steve's peformance is amazing, and you'd be able to watch him hit a glass-shattering high note during Neal Schon's guitar solo. I think you'd really have a blast watching that performance.
Steve came in late 77, till 1997 Perry vocals. Neal played with Santana from 17 yrs old until he and Gregg Rolie started out jazz ish and guitars. 1978 Infinity, 1979, evolutions, 81, Eacape, 83 Frontiers, 86, Raised on Radio then Trial By Fire ALL great albums
Heard a song on the radio last night and thought of you . its by the J. Geils Band (rhymes with smiles) the song is Give It To Me , if you do it album version please . ------- Journey is the perfect blend of hard and soft rock . took some time to get their sound just right but holy shit they are good !! You'll love them
So stinking good. This one is epic. How old are you? Have you really never heard any of these songs you review? That seems impossible to me. You picked a great one to start your Journey journey! Lol. You do realize that heavenly sound rising steadily in the background between 8:48 and 9:02 is Steve Perry's voice?
You missed the best live version of this song from 1980 live in Osaka Japan. Steves' solo intro to the song is EPIC and his interaction with the crowd is priceless! Just saying you should watch that performance!

I always pictured a lonely hitchhiker, on a cold winter night out West, with the stars wheeling overhead. Of course - Perry's haunting voice omg.
He's the voice of a generation.
I always interpreted the “wheel in the sky” to be the sun. Judging by the cover and other lyrical references.
The Midnight Special versions of this song and Anytime are also killer! The whole Infinity album was tremendous.

Schon is pronounced shawn
"Winds of march" and "mother, father" are arguably perry's two finest songs. Just fantastic.
Good choice for a first time Journey song.
THE VOICE
Hey there, buddy! Love your vids! If you need a point of reference, Neal Schon, Journey's guitar player, was in the band Santana when he was only 15 YEARS OLD! If you haven't heard Santana, you might want to check them out. For years, Carlos Santana has been considered by many to be one of the greatest guitar players of all time. If you love guitar, you should definitely look into Carlos Santana. Keep doing what you're doing, and we'll keep watching! Lisa 💖🎸
My favorite by Journey!
City lights is the best ballad, a must hear
SO glad you liked this! ⚙️ 🏞♡
You mentioned you haven't heard any voices you haven't liked from this time period.. probably because you actually had to be able to sing to be the lead singer of a band.. no auto-tune to make you sound good back in the day.
steve perry, THE VOICE.....
One of my favorites by Journey is....Loving, Touchin,Squeezin!!!!!
NEXT was the first Journey album I heard. I have to confess they were all my brother's albums. That was before Steve Perry.
Fantastic band.
Ohh the Journey journey, yasss
Try "Lovin, touching ,Squeezing " or "Lights" actually any song you choose is amazing :)
Well…in my opinion, there is no top or bottom to a list of Journey songs. Their entire catalog is incredible and iconic. My recommendation is Mother, Father LIVE version.
I am not sure if you picked up Steve Perry singing during the guitar solo? His range is amazing.
Steve perry is known by his peers as "the voice " keep listening they only get better
Journey On!
My favorite journey song
I knew you’d love Steve Perry’s voice bc of how much you love Mitch from PTX haha
So many great Journey songs pre Escape album Infinity was great!!!
It's one of my favorites
Steve came in late 77, till 1997
Perry vocals.
Neal played with Santana from 17 yrs old until he and Gregg Rolie started out jazz ish and guitars. 1978 Infinity, 1979, evolutions, 81, Eacape, 83 Frontiers, 86, Raised on Radio then Trial By Fire ALL great albums
The morning sun is rising it’s kissing the day
Heard a song on the radio last night and thought of you . its by the J. Geils Band (rhymes with smiles) the song is Give It To Me , if you do it album version please . ------- Journey is the perfect blend of hard and soft rock . took some time to get their sound just right but holy shit they are good !! You'll love them
The Voice
Love your face when you first hear “The Voice” Steve Perry. Now go ahead and listen to the rest of the biggies.
Cool choice going for less obvious selection. Other Journey less obvious choices would be After the Fall and Why Can't This Night Go On Forever.
You heard him sing HIGH during the solo??😁
So stinking good. This one is epic. How old are you? Have you really never heard any of these songs you review? That seems impossible to me. You picked a great one to start your Journey journey! Lol. You do realize that heavenly sound rising steadily in the background between 8:48 and 9:02 is Steve Perry's voice?
Did you catch the very high note towards the end of the guitar solo-that high note is Steve Perry’s voice!
10:27, my brother in Christ, wait until you hear the high notes at 8:50 lmao
He's The Voice....
good song
You missed the best live version of this song from 1980 live in Osaka Japan. Steves' solo intro to the song is EPIC and his interaction with the crowd is priceless! Just saying you should watch that performance!
wheel in the sky is the sun, it keeps moving on
Love me some Journey!! If you like the Higher pitch, you should do Patty Loveless singing...You'll Never Leave Harlen Alive!! I promise you'll love it!!
This is the song my Son says is the best Journey song..... 😂....he's a 90's baby. The Album version was my pick
Video of a live performance features Schon in bell bottoms and his giant afro of the time.
