    Another day another Island and new ferry, how exciting! I'll need to add up all the ferries I've been on in the Calmac fleet, I suspect way over half of them, I won't stop until I've been on them all - the islands and the ferries! Ix

      @declanconway2903 thank you, glad you enjoyed another of my wee Scottish island trips. Plenty more on the way once I can depend on the ferries a bit more. Terrible weather here just now so I’ll dive to the archives haha and pull stuff together. Cheers see you again soon. Ix

    Lovely day trip! I took a trip over to Raasay a couple of years ago but just as a foot passenger so I didn't make it as far as the distillery or Calum's Road but I did walk up the coast a bit then around the community garden and the old churchyard across the road. Next time I will have to drive!

    • @IonaMacinnes
      @IonaMacinnes  11 днів тому

      @mcreilly2 hello I know isn’t it lovely, great for a wee day trip for sure. You need a car to see the north. Although it’s only 14 miles it takes ages to get up north cos the roads are single track and not great. You’ll need to take the car over for sure. It’s cheap too so that’s good, only downer is you can’t have a dram at the distillery if you’re driving ha. Nice to walk round the community garden and church for sure, excellent. Ix

    So moving, the story of Calum's Road, bless him and his family. What a resilient community. I lived for 7 months near Plockton and although I explored some of Skye I never made it to Raasay. Thank you for taking us there with you.

      @hilarycampbell4219 I know it was terrible what he had to do to sustain living in Arnish. His daughter Julie is now 74 and she says she lost those precious years as her time at home was cut because the council wouldn't let her be schooled in Raasay. Her Mum Lexi was the teacher there. I'm glad you watched, thanks for messaging to say too. Ive got another cruise booked too, looking forward to it!

      @ericthearfaviking7579 yes she's now living in Fife with her family, she's 74 nowhere Mum Lexi died in 2001, so sad. She feels it to this day, she let all those precious years with her family. But she has the comfort knowing that he built that road for her. Such an amazing story, she seem such a lovely lady and determined as was her father. No wonder there have been songs, books and plays about this mans efforts! Ix

    Awe that was lovely! I giggled that your man on the ferry over & the lass at the distillery weren't Scots! I bought the book 'Callum's Road' after Ruth went there but haven't read it yet, I didn't realise about their daughter, how terrible I guess that's the heartache mentioned, the poor family 😔 I'll send this link on to my ma now as I always do 😉 she's 93 & house bound & enjoys your videos. xx

    • @IonaMacinnes
      @IonaMacinnes  12 днів тому

      @vivellasmum hello to your Mum, I remember you telling me she watchs, that's so lovely. How far away from you does she live? Well we never actually managed to speak to anyone from Raasay while we were there sadly. We did look and even stopped a lady out walking and asked if she was from Rassay, she said she was so we started saying oh thats great as we haven't met anyone yet and then she confessed to moving there at the turn of the century and was from England. They would all have been at work when we were there. Read the book it's really unbelievable that the north was emptied because of such poor accessibility. Glad you enjoyed it and thanks for your lovely message. Youv'e got it on your list of places to see anyway. Ix

    A brilliant vlog with amazing content Iona. Those chairs in waiting room at ferry terminal reminded me of urinals in a public toilet lol. The ferry man " two people?" lol.
    Callum was an amazing man to build a road 1 and 3/4 miles long with a pick axe and wheel barrow for ten years....but what a legacy he's left....I was thinking of writing a scottish country dance song and calling it " From Mallaig to Hallaig" lol.
    Angus MacAskill will forever be remembered too, 7' 9", I wonder if he had Marfan syndrome?
    So you can get bevvied at distillery and stay overnight.....that's fantastic! haha. It's a shame Dunvegan Castle was closed. Have you ever seen Danny MacAskill cycling down the Cuillins? There is amazing videos on YT.
    Thanks for taking us to Raasay, roll on the next video, I can't wait Iona, bye for now. x

    • @IonaMacinnes
      @IonaMacinnes  11 днів тому +1

      @daviemcf hello hello, how are you? Glad you enjoyed it, haha I thought exactly the same about the chairs in the calmac waiting room, they’re terrible😂😂. Oh I know what a laugh looking in the back and a wee buy tinted windows in my fancy fiesta👀🤣 seriously read the book it’s brilliant, he did indeed, and a member of capercaillie wrote a tune for him you should listen to it. I’ll use it in my Raasay short if I can get it to work. Also listen to Runrigs Wall of China song.
      The giant Macaskill was a true giant because he didn’t have any medical conditions at all, no pathological issues. Was so good after being in berneray so I really wanted to see this museum. Yes I’ve seen his videos. He’s unreal talented isn’t he, amazing. I was so delighted to see his bike. Aye it was a really good day. Glad you enjoyed it tho, we’ll see what happens next. Just booked Tiree and a few other things so plenty to get on with, yey. Ix

    Great vlog again Iona! We went to Raasay back in 2011. Don't remember cars being allowed, we went as foot passengers and walked down to the south. Wife was offered a job in the hotel after we got talking to the proprietor and mentioned that we had met on Lundy Island off the North Devon coast!

Lots of nice hikes up the north of the island if anyone has time. Aye cars are welcome and you don’t really pass many on the road in the winter anyway. Loved it when I visited, went to the distillery but the tour was booked for that day. That looked like John (think that was his name), he was a really nice bloke and got chatting to him and he actually comes from near where I live.
