    This band was a gift from God. Neil Peart was one of the best drummers to ever live. You need to hear the studio version. However, I saw them live in the late 70s and early 80s, some of the best shows I saw. Alex Liiefson is on lead guitar. Geddy Lee is on bass and lead singer

    Rush is a Canadian treasure, and one of the best prog-rock bands in history. Their influence is very far-reaching, and their discography is very extensive. Anything you listen to from them is going to be amazing, because there is no such thing as a "bad" Rush song... Geddy Lee is the lead singer, Neil Peart is on drums (he has passed away, sadly), and Alex Lifeson is on guitar. All are/were among the finest musicians modern music has produced.

      Sitting by the pool at a hotel in Rio, one of the young gentlemen on staff stopped by to see if we needed anything, and asked where we were from. As soon as we said Canada, a look of absolute rapture came over this guy's face, and he starts singing Tom Sawyer at the top of his lung, haha! It was pretty fantastic! Brazilians do, indeed, love some Rush!

    Rush was a great Canadian rock band formed in 1968. The band's style changed over the years, from a blues-inspired hard rock beginning, later moving into progressive rock, then a period marked by heavy use of synthesizers, before returning to guitar-driven hard rock since the end of the 1980s. They had a lot of great songs such as "Not Fade Away", "In The Mood", "Working Man", "Bad Boy", "Fly By Night", "Limelight", "Red Barchetta", "The Spirit Of Radio", "The Trees", "Subdivisions", "Closer To The Heart", "Xanadu", "Anthem" etc.

      @screwyootube1 2 роки тому +1

      I would agree, except... I would suggest finding an earlier, say from the 80s or at least 90s version of this song. Geddy's voice was really struggling here (I'm guessing this is clip is from the 2010s, within the last few years before Rush ended in 2015). He, like Neil & Alex are superhuman with their respective instruments, but from the 90s on, Geddy's voice was struggling to keep up, and alas, could not. Tom Sawyer was originally recorded before he turned 30, and to try to hit those high notes 30+ years later is a little unreasonable to expect. But in the 80s/90s, he still sounded fantastic, and a clip from, say A Show of Hands (1988) should show him in top form. As far as their playing, they've ALWAYS been at the top of their game, because they ALWAYS given 110%. Nobody gave their all like Rush!

  • @kimbarron4208
    @kimbarron4208 2 роки тому +6

    I noticed in this video that Geddy wasn't hitting some of the high notes. Back in the day, he never missed one. ❤️

    • @leehanson1416
      @leehanson1416 2 роки тому

      One could say that Geddy wasn't singing the high notes he did when he was in his youth. One could also say that he sang too high in his youth- most of the bitching about Rush in their beginnings was that Ged's voice was "screechy".

    Rush are three master musicians from Toronto, Canada who had a 40 plus year career.
    Geddy Lee Vocals, Bass and Keyboards
    Alex Lifeson Guitar, Mandolin
    Neil Peart Drums, Percussion and Main Lyrist
    Neil Peart is considered one of the best drummers in rock. Unfortunately he passed from cancer in January of 2020.

The number 2112 is in your future. As a lifelong fan it’s always great to see new people get their minds blown by these guys. 3 men, that’s it. 3 very silly Canadians who can play their asses off! Oh, definitely need to listen to some more of these guys! They're a national treasure in Canada. Most rockers will agree when I say IMO that Neal Peart is the best drummer of all time. You might want to listen to one of their early hits, "Working Man", which was like 1974. And they toured until 2016, I think. That will give you an idea of the volume of work. You might watch the official video of "Tom Sawyer" as well.

    I agree with some of the recommendations below for new material for reactions. The concert you were watching was at the end of Rush's touring after having been together as a band (with the same 3 prodigal talents) for over 40 years. They were at the apogee of their creative and performative brilliance in the 70s and early 80s (in my humble opinion) and their music from that era is some of the most technically difficult and compositionally brilliant work of any rock band ever. Keep up the discoveries and the reactions.

    Geddy Lee - Bass, lead vocals, keyboard. Alex Lifeson, lead guitar. And last, but not least, Neil Peart....drums and head lyracist. Neil is arguably the greatest rock drummer to ever sit behind the kit....nicknamed "The Professor", and was as much a poet as a drummer. Sadly, we lost him 2 years ago. RIP Neil.

    What you have here is the purest form of synergy. Three dedicated virtuoso musicians who never allowed ego to interfere with collaboration. Neil Peart (drummer) was the primary lyricist, while Geddy Lee (bass/vocals) and Alex Lifeson (guitar) developed the initial melodies and arrangements. But all three interacted to craft masterpieces of unparalleled musicality, intensity, and meaning. No song by Rush is without a purpose, and they were always willing to stand up and fight for their integrity.

    My first concert was the RUSH, Moving Pictures Tour, Lakeland Civic Center, Lakeland, FL, on September 20, 1980. I was 13 years old. It was a life changing experience. Gedy Lee is one of the greatest bass players of all time. You already sated the facts of teh late, great drum God, Neil Peart. No one has ever come close to matching his skill. Alex lifeson is no slouch either. He is a musical genious. What is also amazing is that they all three have been married to their wives for over 35 years. They take their families on tour with them. Very dedicated family men and best of friends. This is how the band has managed to stay together and stay rtelivent for 53 years. Amazing. They came together in 68. I was born in 67. I am a grandfather. Up until Neal's passing, they were still making new music and touring to sell out crounds.

    Rush was from Canada, the band was a local band in Toronto, when they got signed to a US label in 1974... Rush was comprised of Geddy Lee (vocals/ bass/ keyboards), Alex Lifeson (guitar), and Neil Peart (drums)... "The Professor" Neil Peart replaced their original drummer (the late) John Rutsey in 1974, and Peart also became the band's lyricist. Rush spent decades crafting music and never stuck to 1 style; they incorporated so many styles of music into their records. Their early 70's albums set a benchmark for musicianship... their 80's records pushed the boundaries of electronics and programming in rock music.
    Rush ended their career after a final tour in 2015... Sadly, Neil Peart passed away from cancer in 2020. His drumming skills were legendary and his lyrics were truly inspirational - from fantasy fiction to more thoughtful & realistic scenarios.
    More Rush songs to check out - 'Closer to the heart' ... 'Red Barchetta' ... 'The spirit of radio' ... 'Limelight' ... 'Subdivisions' ... 'A passage to Bangkok' ... 'Working man' ... 'Fly by night' ... 'Dreamline' ... 'Half the world' ... 'Between Sun & Moon'... 'Far cry'... 'Force Ten'... 🤘🤘🔥🔥

    I love Rush! It is so sad that we lost Neil Peart aka The Professor to brain cancer. I saw Rush back in the early 80’s at Madison Square Garden and my ears were ringing for like 3 days. They were loud but stellar! Ah those were the day’s. Sometimes I wish I could go back to the 80’s and revisit all of the bands I saw live. I still go to concerts now. I am revisiting as many bands that I grew up with before they are all gone. It is the only way I can transcend back to the 80’s. I close my eyes as I listen to music and there I am back in time with all those memories🥰 Rush’s music is timeless and always gives you that feel good vibes✌🏻&♥️

    "The guy with the glasses" is Geddy Lee, bassist, vocalist, and keyboards, sometimes all at once. Born Gary Lee Weintraub, he picked up the nickname "Geddy" because his grandmother had trouble pronouncing "Gary", then dropped the "Weintraub" at the request of his first record company.
    Guitars are more than amply handled by Alex Lifeson; his birth name requires characters my keyboard doesn't have, but "Lifeson" is a rough English translation. He's one of the most outstanding guitarists in rock - in any other band on Earth he'd have been the breakout star, but here he's among peers.
    Neil Peart (pronounced "Peert") was the percussionist, as well as the chief lyricist. (Geddy said that on their first tour with Neil, they noticed he was always reading or writing poetry, so they just had him write the lyrics from then on.) He has been described as "your favorite drummer's favorite drummer"; reportedly he tried to use a click track back in the day, but it threw off his rhythm because it was less accurate than he was. And all those drums in that kit? Yeah, he uses all of them. ALL of them. Sometimes more get brought on for a particular song.

    That last few bars that they ended the song with is not part of the studio version of the song. As a matter of fact, it's actually a musical quotation of a song by Cheech And Chong from the 70s. The song was called "Earache My Eye" and it was on their "Up In Smoke" comedy album.

    Rush is my favorite ever. My first concert, I was 14 in 1981 (this album-Moving Picture). 2nd row right in front of Alex Lifeson (guitarist). It cost $10. Saw them again in 2012. I describe them as 3 goofy guys who are geniuses at their art. If you like this song, you should take some time & listen to them, you don't have to do reactions (although I like to see them). It will be time worth spent. I feel lucky to have seen them twice. It still feels like a gut punch that Neil is no longer with us.
    Working Man in Cleveland...YYZ in Rio...Closer to the Hear in Rio...Neil's Frankfurt drum solo...La Villa Strangiato....and the epic - 2112 (cartoon version). And anything everyone else is suggesting, but they're best live.

    I listened to that 2112 LP when I was about 11 years old and I'm thankful to Geddy, Alex & Neil (R.I.P. the Professor) to this very day. One of the top 3 bands of all time for me. Great people too...I saw them 3 times and I am grateful.

    For old heavy Rush, the best songs (an my favorites) are Working Man, Anthem, and Bastille Day. But, every song they recorded was amazing and worthy of the Hall of Fame.

    For more exciting Rush, I would suggest Limelight, Spirit of Radio, Closer to the Heart, Red Barchetta, The Big Money, Time Stand Still, The Trees and Free Will. For a glimpse at their early days (to get an idea of their roots as a progressive/hard rock band), I suggest Fly by Night, Working Man, Anthem, Lakeside Park & Bastille Day. Rush also made several, what I like to call "epic-length" songs, longer, more dramatic, intense & complex songs, such as Xanadu, 2112, La Villa Strangiato, Natural Science, By-Tor & the Snow-Dog and The Camera Eye. Finally, they also recorded some truly incredible instrumentals, such as YYZ, the aforementioned La Villa Strangiato, Where's My Thing & Leave That Thing Alone. Enjoy!

    The best live audience videos are from Rio, Cleveland, and Frankfurt. The recording of YYZ (completely instrumental) with a massive crowd all vocalizing the melody, is a unique experience in all of music.

    RUSH ARMY REPORTING FOR DUTY! You've dipped your toe into the middle of the career of the best 3-man band in rock history. Rush are the grandfathers of prog rock, right up there with Yes and Led Zeppelin. Moving Pictures is arguably their most popular album, Tom Sawyer being the most popular track on it. While there are definitely some keystone live performances out there, I encourage you to also continue to check out the studio versions of certain songs as well, because they change things up a lot and have fun when playing live. Listen to the studio version to hear where the live performances come from.
    Neil Peart (peert not pert) is "your favorite drummer's favorite drummer". Nicknamed The Professor, he was Rush's lyricist.
    Alex Lifeson is the goofball of the group, and the most underrated guitarist of all time.
    Geddy Lee is one of the best bassists on the planet. In addition to bass, he is the lead vocalist and also plays keyboards and pedals.
    You've just uncorked one hell of a bottle, my good man. Enjoy.
    YYZ (Live in Rio), Working Man (Live in Cleveland 2011 Time Machine Tour), La Villa Strangiato (official video or studio), Xanadu (Live Exit Stage Left 1981), Spirit of Radio, Subdivisions, Digital Man, The Analog Kid, The Camera Eye, Red Barchetta, 2112 (studio version with lyrics, the whole thing! It's 20 minutes long), Bastille Day, Cygnus X-1 Book I: The Voyage, Cygnus X-1 Book II: Hemispheres), Natural Science, Closer To The Heart, A Farewell To Kings, The Pass, Scars, Time Stand Still, Where's My Thing? There It Is!, Leave That Thing Alone, Countdown, Losing It, well, there's so many more.

    As a fellow Canadian , I love these guys , but you should react to earlier version of this , or any of their songs. fact is , Geddy, the singer , grew up , and literally Couldnt sing his own lyrics. His voice is AMAZING, but in later years,much more average

    this is towards the end of their career. By this time Neil Peart was dying of cancer and Geddy Lee started losing his voice. This band was badass for 30 years lol One of the best drummers ever (r.i.p. Neil Peart)

      They revealed not too long ago that they knew about Neils cancer on the very last tour, but he asked them to not tell. He didn't want that kind of attention. Geddy basically kinda apologized for lying to the fans, not that anybody faulted either him or Alex for respecting Neil's wishes.

    It's probably been recommended already but 2112 is amazing and there's a story line that runs all the way through it. The early stuff is way more album rock (circa late 60's and 70's) than stuff like Tom Sawyer, Spirit of Radio, or Free Will, as examples, which are more "radio friendly."
